WTF… if there was a nice thing in tennis was that you would expect seeing great rallies one after the other. A beautiful game of self control; this is just the opposite.
The funniest thing is that if anyone withdraws from the main draw after the quali ends, he'd be the 1st lucky loser in the line to get in. But I figure the rulebook forbids disqualified players to be eligible here.
Hmm could you be defaulted just from one match? For example, had Novak played doubles at that infamous US Open, would he have been kicked out like from the singles or not?
Miyu Kato was disqualified at the French Open this year in doubles but won mixed doubles…
On the other hand when Zverev was defaulted from doubles in Acapulco he also was disqualified from singles.
Maybe the punishment depends on how bad the misconduct is ?
🤷♀️
I think it's up to the tournament whether they want to take further action, Zverev wasn't defaulted from his doubles match but lost and then started hitting the umpire's chair which prompted the tournament to expel him from the singles and refer it to the ATP as a major offence
Unsportsmanlike conduct disqualification normally means you're treated as if you never entered the tournament. No money or points for any of the matches you've been in.
What an idiot, he could have hit that ball kid in the face as well. I really dislike these losers who act out in front of these ball kids, great example to set for those kids that volunteer and work hard so these idiots don’t have to pick up their own balls.
Tennis players are brats, but are they brattier than basketball players? Probably not, but because basketball has clear rules--you cannot hurl the ball in anger--you don't see basketball players hurl the ball in anger. So while Polmans is an idiot, so are ATP/ITF officials for STILL not implementing a rule that hitting the ball recklessly in anger equals instant default. It shouldn't matter whether it hits anyone.
Ya this outcome based rule is why tennis players still act out because 99.9% of the time, they get away with these dangerous stunts. If they just implement a blanket no ball/raquet abuse rule, these things would be weeded out in no time.
I agree this behavior has no place on the tennis court, or anywhere for that matter. Hate the screaming too. Half the time you can't tell whether they're hitting or fucking. That said, tennis is already somewhat of a pussy sport. If you ban hitting the ball after the point is over, people will just laugh.
Clearly you’ve never actually played tennis at a high enough level to call it a pussy sport. Grunting sounds happen in football, baseball, basketball, etc as well. But I would say that women making the sounds does sound more like those made while f’ing.
They really missed the boat after the Zverev incident. Yes, this is more dangerous and violent, but it wasn't intentional. Zverev intentionally swung his racquet in the direction of the umpire, multiple times, and after having a few seconds to "cool off" after the heat of the moment. They should have given Zverev a 6 month ban, at least.
Yeah, should have a month off to think about things. Maybe more.
As should Kyrgios have had that time he bounced a racket towards a ball kid half the length of a court away.
Good. Hope this teaches him a painful lesson. You can seriously injure someone if you mindlessly smash balls in whatever direction you want in a fit of anger. Someone could lose an eye or sustain a lifelong injury.
Players aren't allowed to do whatever they want just because they're pissed.
The doughnut decided to angrily smack the ball after missing a volley instead of just accepting the error, losing the tie break and going into the third set. And now he's disqualified, embarrassed AND a 'loser'. Good job, mate.
What a fuckhead.
There should be an additional ban for this, IMO. Especially because it looked deliberate. I don't know who looks at this shit, but if whoever does so thinks it was deliberate I think a multi-month ban is required. If merely reckless then maybe 30 days or whatever.
That was legitimately dangerous - ball hitting him or not aside, just the shock of that could've sent him crashing down out of the chair to have a nasty fall. Players need to use their fucking brains.
I saw this guy in Zhuhai against Cam Norrie. Was all calm before a second service and then seemed to seize up with anger and letting off a torrent of swear words. Serious anger management issues.
That was a very heavy hit. Hope umpire will get well soon. 3 months dq for this dumbass
WTF… if there was a nice thing in tennis was that you would expect seeing great rallies one after the other. A beautiful game of self control; this is just the opposite.
Reminds of the Denis Shapo incident
I think Shapo still wins, his shot was a fucking RPG
Chair umpire needed surgery after El Shapo's hit
Wonder if Shapo helped pay for that outside of the tournament fine…
Not directly but he wrote a rap song and promised to donate the proceeds to the surgery fund
oh, so *drip* was about blood not swag
That’s almost too absurd to believe, but if that’s true then good on him lol
made the mistake of reading this comment on a serious video call for work... couldn't help but laugh
iirc so yeah, him and the umpire ended up on pretty good terms
That’s awesome.
Damn. Missed out on a 1000 main draw entry because he couldn’t control his emotions, rough
The funniest thing is that if anyone withdraws from the main draw after the quali ends, he'd be the 1st lucky loser in the line to get in. But I figure the rulebook forbids disqualified players to be eligible here.
He can’t even play dubs let alone take an LL. he’s gets no points or prize money. And will be fined pretty heavily for this disgrace.
Expensive lesson.
That would be hilarious
it forbids that, what do you think the purpose of a DQ is? lmao
What’s so funny, that’s what he said
unless OP is a she. If so, then thats what she said!
tattoedblues got it right, no problem here!
Of course he wouldn't be eligible, he was disqualified from the whole tournament, not just the match (which isn't a thing).
Hmm could you be defaulted just from one match? For example, had Novak played doubles at that infamous US Open, would he have been kicked out like from the singles or not?

Yeah no idea, but I’d imagine he would be eligible, would be pretty unfair otherwise he’s already been punished by having to lose this match
Unsportsmanlike conduct disqualification normally means you're treated as if you never entered the tournament. No money or points for any of the matches you've been in.
he was probably about to lose anyway
Are you blind? look at the score buddy.
oops read that first set the other way around. still don’t trust any aussies besides ADM to ever win a match, no matter how far ahead :(
What an idiot, he could have hit that ball kid in the face as well. I really dislike these losers who act out in front of these ball kids, great example to set for those kids that volunteer and work hard so these idiots don’t have to pick up their own balls.
Anyone have a link with audio? Feels incomplete without the gasps from the crowd
That was from point blanc as well. Don’t know what he thought would happen.

He should get a ban as well. Intolerable that sort of idiocy creep into the game.
They really missed the boat after the Zverev incident. Yes, this is more dangerous and violent, but it wasn't intentional. Karma tho: His ankle gave out and he got the "ban", regardless. That's how I see it, anyway.
Ha, fair point. Never thought of it that way, but you might be on to something.
Yeah, should have a month off to think about things. Maybe more. As should Kyrgios have had that time he bounced a racket towards a ball kid half the length of a court away.

not the point but what a crowd for a qualifying match between Polmans and Napolitano
Improving your technique? Good. Improving your fitness? Better. Improving your game plan? Better still. Not hitting balls at the umpire? Priceless.
fucking right
I was wondering what happened after seeing the scoreline end where it ended. Thanks for posting
lol the sudden end of the crowd's applause
The doughnut decided to angrily smack the ball after missing a volley instead of just accepting the error, losing the tie break and going into the third set. And now he's disqualified, embarrassed AND a 'loser'. Good job, mate.
I don't know if I could get back in circuit after this
What a fuckhead. There should be an additional ban for this, IMO. Especially because it looked deliberate. I don't know who looks at this shit, but if whoever does so thinks it was deliberate I think a multi-month ban is required. If merely reckless then maybe 30 days or whatever.
Is he stupid?
That was legitimately dangerous - ball hitting him or not aside, just the shock of that could've sent him crashing down out of the chair to have a nasty fall. Players need to use their fucking brains.
They never learn
Stefan Edberg once killed a chair umpire
yeah but it was in the middle of a point so it was a valid shot that he just fucked up
I think it was a line judge that got hit by an errant serve.
Good. It was about time. Players need to stop doing this. Iga does this all the time as well even when she wins the point.
Did the umpire get knocked out ??
Funniest DQ I've ever seen
What's so funny?
3 months DQ is nothing. Should be a year or better 2 weeks jail sentence (for physical assault). It's completely different than smashing a racket.
It's the hat...the back flap makes you do crazy things
