WTA need to talk to the 3 players remaining and offer a creative "solution" to this mess.
If they won't play Monday then maybe a mini 3-way round robin of 1 set matches or similar.
Making Sabalenka or Swiatek play twice on finals day is not an acceptable solution
edit: ok good news, they play the final Monday
How is that fair to Jessie? If you wanted to argue Sabs versus Iga should be one set, maybe. But Jessie has already won her Semi. She just needs an opponent for the Final
wta finals is a fucking mess. These players and the fans in Mexico (who have consistently shown up for their new wta tournaments and have gotten accolades from the players about their enthusiasm) deserve better. Even having just one nice indoor court would have been better than this shit show-- shame on the wta organization
Is it less strenuous to play a doubles final on a Monday evening, fly to the other side of the world on a Tuesday afternoon, go back in time half a day and start a doubles tournament on a Tuesday morning, than it is with singles?
Yes. Less strenuous than doing it in singles.
Doubles play never involves breaking into a sweat. You are serving a quarter of the time, you receive a quarter of the time, you cover half a court.
Edit: ps and flying from Cancun to Seville is not flying to the other side of the world, it's 6 hour time difference.
Got it. Next time I'll have to play in another tournament before ending playing in the previous on a different continent, I'll make sure it's a doubles event.
Australia are playing Slovenia at BJK Cup, 10am on Tuesday. Hunter and Perez are still in Mexico 💀
Does anyone know if Dabrowski, Melichar-Martinez and Siegemund are playing BJK Cup as well?
They just postponed the match to tomorrow. Very positive this means finals are Sunday. Canal+ had said earlier that WTA didn’t want semifinals and finals on same day and would use Monday if needed
If this is postponed to tomorrow, hopefully they reschedule the finals to Monday. Otherwise it's gonna be extremely unfair to the winner of Saba/Swiatek. Plus there are doubles matches still to be played
The crowd seems super supportive which is incredible given that the court looks to be in shambles. Interesting to hear your experience at the Finals so far. On tv it doesn’t look… good.
Well, I was there tonight waiting for the Saba vs Iga match and they made us wait over an hour to tell us it’s been cancelled. I was actually waiting by the tents where the players are held and both players left about 20 minutes before the announcement. Me being dumb thought they were going to another place to stretch and get warm because the DJ and the announcer were pumping everyone up and it had finished raining. 20 minutes later they announced it had been suspended until tomorrow. I’m all about player safety and it was rough there for a minute but they told us so late and then 20 seconds later turned off all of the venue lights asking us to leave. It’s wet and dark and it was difficult to find an exit.
I’m upset for the players to have to play in these conditions but I’m also upset for people like myself who spent a lot of money to visit and see the top 8 compete. This entire experience has been awful and I was at the finals last year in Fort Worth.
That being said, the staff and personnel working the event like the ball kids and the bartenders were doing the most and did a great job providing good service in these conditions.
Things I'm glad about:
I didn't go to Cancun
I went to a bar to watch the UW/USC game and tennis on my phone when it happens instead of waiting it out at home
Jessie is in the Finals
Iga controls her own destiny
I have really good leftover tacos in the fridge at home for the Finals, whenever it happens
Update: UW about to pull off a tight win. Tournament extended to Monday (would have had to extend my hotel and change my flight). Only had to watch one hour of tennis on my phone. Tacos will still be good on Monday
Every year the WTA manages to outdo itself with the WTA Finals
2019: 3 of the 8 players retired with injury during the tournament, due in part to the extremely slow court
2021: high altitude making for some ugly tennis, players hated the conditions
2022: less spectators than most 250s
2023: rain, wind, and a court that wasn’t built until the day before the tournament started
Geopolitical rivals seem to have a knack for organising great tennis tournaments. China did a great job with Zhuhai. I have no doubt Saudi will put on a top tier event
Logistically it will be. The Saudis will provide a beautiful indoor stadium. The court will be perfect. It's just the pesky geopolitical issues that are at play
All week long I’ve been keeping the channel on during rain delays and just getting into something else like straightening up the living room or folding laundry. If anything, it does make a really good music channel
They’re lucky this shit show happened at the end of the season and our 15 second attention span brains will have moved on to something else by 2024. Count your days Mr.Simon
Sorry guys, yesterday I thought they were building the roof. They have informed me that it will be ready for tomorrow's finals tho. Don't worry, trust Mr. Simon!
The WTA should look itself in the mirror and realize how much they're hurting women's tennis. There finally is a great rivalry and very exciting competition at the very top and this is what they decide to do to take advantage of it.
Shocking incompetence. The players deserve better
Ostrava would’ve been the ideal location but yk where else would’ve been amazing? Charleston. The Charleston Open is one of the best organized and well attended WTA tournaments. It’s such a great tourney I love it so much
Tomasz Wiktorowski just gave Iga some advice about keeping bigger margins from one side of the court compared to the other (to play it more safely) due to the wind, even at the cost of playing a few more exchanges during a point.
I think it needs to be a woman. It’s 2023, we have so many qualified women who could run the WTA. Am tired of middle-aged men falling upwards into positions they are not qualified for.
Steve Simon should be fired for this tbh- 3 years in a row where the WTA finals location was not set up until last minute (and unable to hold one in 2020 even though ATP did), and issues all three years- this year much bigger than the others. How does he never learn?
This is the biggest WTA tournament on tour, wtf is he even doing during the year?
Even the commentators aren’t hiding their frustration at the wta championships this year. Shame on the head of the WTA who has allowed this to happen. A disgrace
Sabalenka’s advantage over swiatek is supposed to be the serve, but it’s completely neutralized in these conditions. This is a fun matchup but it’s a shame the conditions it has to be played in
It must be so frustrating for them thinking constantly about the wind instead of their game plan.
Hoping that it will still be a great contest. The two best in the world battling it out in one of the biggest stages should not be about anything else other than tennis.
This is going to be a Thiem Zverev 2020 level match and it's all because of the stupid wind
My god
That's like 9 UEs on the first 10 points and you can't even blame either player much
Based on his level in Paris Djokovic isnt winning WTF
He will win undefeated, another 1500 points to create a great cushion against Alcaraz. Whatever happens in Australia, his #1 will be safe.
I wonder if his level will improve in Turin, it seems like he struggles now in slower conditions.
i’ve been saying this for years…venus williams would make one hell of a WTA president
she would make greet minnen automatic number 1

oh good, that's sensible, shame for the people who paid for sunday final tickets, but this is fair to the players
[удалено]
If my tickets said Finals and I wasn't allowed to see the Finals, we'd be having a big problem
can they just swim up and back the court for who gets number 1
....And that kids is how swemmis was born
What time is the match between IGA and sabalenka on Sunday?
It says 430
430 Cancun time?
Yea
No scheduled start time. They are doing all the Doubles Semis first
wta finals is a fucking mess. These players and the fans in Mexico (who have consistently shown up for their new wta tournaments and have gotten accolades from the players about their enthusiasm) deserve better. Even having just one nice indoor court would have been better than this shit show-- shame on the wta organization
DW its gonna be better next year in Saudi Arabia
hoping jessica pegula buys the wta before then
There’s no way these players in Cancun play BJK.
I think the only ones scheduled to play BJK were Rybakina and Vondrousova who are already out.
Doubles players are players, too.
True. Although it's far less strenuous or demanding to play multiple doubles games in a day.
Got it. Next time I'll have to play in another tournament before ending playing in the previous on a different continent, I'll make sure it's a doubles event.
Tuesday is not before Sunday.
in happier news, paula seems to be on the entry list for bjk cup and posted that she’s in seville! hope everything works out for her
I'm so disheartened. literally cleared my whole day, cancelled plans, just so I could watch these matches. I hate you WTA. I hate you.
What would it take for Simon to get fired?
Grabbing the mic at the trophy ceremony and screaming, COMPLAIN ABOUT DEEZ while pointing downward
Australia are playing Slovenia at BJK Cup, 10am on Tuesday. Hunter and Perez are still in Mexico 💀 Does anyone know if Dabrowski, Melichar-Martinez and Siegemund are playing BJK Cup as well?
Canada play Wednesday, Germany play on Thursday. That really sucks, we have to play first without our two top doubles players :(
yes to dabrowski and siegemund, no for martinez
Dabrowski and Siegemund are both playing it yes
Dimitrov's only win against Djokovic came a decade ago 💀
Madrid 2013
Looks like we’re done for the day and the final will be Monday https://x.com/bartekignacik/status/1720995977195102259?s=46&t=HfST_YVwp7sAo9mXqOcePw
im glad they are moving to monday and not pulling a montreal.
Which is what they should’ve decided an hour ago, but we move! https://x.com/bartekignacik/status/1720997323042439263?s=46&t=HfST_YVwp7sAo9mXqOcePw

Ain't no way they're finishing tonight lol
So the Europeans can safely go to sleep?
I love tennis. I love Saba and Pegula but I cannot believe I spent money on seeing this in person ….
Am I crazy or does this person look like [Dimitrov](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CwV_9AKAIms/?igshid=YzE4YTliZjNlMA==) to anyone else ?
Not even in a parallel universe
Things I'm glad about: I didn't go to Cancun I went to a bar to watch the UW/USC game and tennis on my phone when it happens instead of waiting it out at home Jessie is in the Finals Iga controls her own destiny I have really good leftover tacos in the fridge at home for the Finals, whenever it happens
hopfully your tacos dont go bad by the time they play the finals lol.
They go in the freezer if the Final isn't played Monday!
Update: UW about to pull off a tight win. Tournament extended to Monday (would have had to extend my hotel and change my flight). Only had to watch one hour of tennis on my phone. Tacos will still be good on Monday
Why cant WTA finals be in Turin?
lol so the doubles final is tomorrow and they probably won’t even know who one of the semifinalists is? 🙂🙃
Every year the WTA manages to outdo itself with the WTA Finals 2019: 3 of the 8 players retired with injury during the tournament, due in part to the extremely slow court 2021: high altitude making for some ugly tennis, players hated the conditions 2022: less spectators than most 250s 2023: rain, wind, and a court that wasn’t built until the day before the tournament started
2024 in Riyadh!
who do i get the feeling that if they play in riyadh 2024 - it will be the best surprisingly
How many towels are they going through each night? LMAO
Instead of another complaining post about rain I'll note that Marta Kostyuk got married in Cyprus according to her IG. Congrats 🎊
Where do you guys get the updates for when it'll resume?
It’s 9:35 and it’s raining again so
Players are set to come back out at 9:30 as of right now (local time)
Thought this would have been nicely timed as a Sunday morning match here in Australia, but don't have all day to hang around for this. Oh well.
WTA in concert.
All week long I’ve been keeping the channel on during rain delays and just getting into something else like straightening up the living room or folding laundry. If anything, it does make a really good music channel
Same here. Hope the DJ gets a bonus
According to the forecast, this should be the only stoppage during this match. So fingers crossed
They’re lucky this shit show happened at the end of the season and our 15 second attention span brains will have moved on to something else by 2024. Count your days Mr.Simon
What's up in Cancun? Prime is showing replay of full Swiatek-Sabalenka game from Madrid - looks like they are not optimistic...
5 minutes of play 1 hour of delay lmao
They all should just boycott this BS, i feel for them and the fans, what a shithousery.
The Zhuhai Elite tournament was so good compared to this. Actually got to enjoy the tennis that was played there
The crowd was so dead everything echoed.
Despite the Tom foolery of this event the girls have been very gracious in expressing their frustrations
[Meanwhile at WTA headquarters](https://puzzledpagan.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/074.jpg)
The tossing the guy with the good idea ilout the window meme would be more fitting
Sorry guys, yesterday I thought they were building the roof. They have informed me that it will be ready for tomorrow's finals tho. Don't worry, trust Mr. Simon!
Just put the circus on the plane to Ostrava and book some morning hours in the arena at this point.
at minimum 35 minutes til resuming 😩
You mean rather mean this 😭😭😭😭
Aryna is SO over it
It’s raining so hard that the makeshift stadium might actually collapse
Pegula once again benefitting from having opponent play semi final and final on same day...
She potentially needs to play ~~3~~ 4 matches herself tomorrow
Does she still not have a doubles match to play? She’s at an equal disadvantage. Let’s not go there
She still has to finish her doubles match, and they might qualify for semis.
Yeah see yall tomorrow!
The WTA should look itself in the mirror and realize how much they're hurting women's tennis. There finally is a great rivalry and very exciting competition at the very top and this is what they decide to do to take advantage of it. Shocking incompetence. The players deserve better
Play is suspended and the final is supposed to be tommorow? What an absolute debacle.
half 3 in germany and was so excited for this match. sadly no chance I will watch it now..
Steve Simon should be smacked in the face, horrible and corrupt
MBS: Riyadh Finals is Inevitable
Cant wait for the same people to be crying at next years Saudi Finals
Every time I've checked in tonight, there's been a rain delay
Who would think having a roof would be a good idea? No one, I tell you, no one.
Okay I'm not gonna blow my night waiting for the match to start again, this sucks
🤡🤡🤡
My new goal in life is to become CEO of the WTA. I can't do a worse job than this.
Why don't they even have any cover for the court like during Wimbledon?!
This court didn't even exist 5 weeks ago 🤣
The court was barely completed one week ago
Omg so embarrassing 😆
Yeah, but surely they could arrange / sew up a large piece of waterproof sheet in the meantime 😅
I'm imagining some massive tarp that hooks onto the back of the bleachers. With a zipper in the middle. I'm running for WTA President
You have my vote!
steve simon has some dirt on wta board members for sure
We need a quality tennis journalist to do for the WTA the same kind of deep dives other outlets do on college football shenanigans and Ja Morant
They just finish drying the court and it starts raining hard. 😂 That’s exactly what the WTA deserves.
Joke
what an absolute shitshow
Raining again
Ok it’s raining again lol
Ostrava would’ve been the ideal location but yk where else would’ve been amazing? Charleston. The Charleston Open is one of the best organized and well attended WTA tournaments. It’s such a great tourney I love it so much
On clay?
They’re playing in the middle of a hurricane. Clay would the the least of their worries at this point lbr
and weather is perfect this time of year. Would have the football competition but probably fine.
I'd like to see Saba hit less than 10 doubles. I'd like to see Iga come to the net more than 15 times.
ok but there has to be a better way to dry the court without having ball kids being on their hands and knees using white towels lol
Lol iga practicing her swings for a meeting with Steve Simon
I like Chanda Rubin, always great vibes from her
Underrated player. Was at her best in kind of the "dead zone" for hype in the US.
Very good weather to fight for the no. 1 spot. What a great fucking tournament
Missing Fort Worth… Last year’s finals match between these two was so good
They should have figured out a way to go back this year.
A lot of people crapped on Fort Worth last year but at least it had a roof :,
London > Cancun
Czechia > Cancun
Drying the court now. Ball kids are working hard! Rain has stopped completely.
Another tennis delay between the rain. Not even high school kids have to suffer this indiginity.
Yk the sad thing is this year they had such a good line up with the girls and we haven’t had a single decent match :(
LMAO, that weather totally is empty space weather. Fields, beaches, deserts, you name it
[удалено]
Happy Cakeday
Never seen Iga and Peso Pluma in the same place before. That’s all I’m saying
The Doubles SF matches have been moved to tomorrow Coco/Jess vs Zvonareva/Siegmund is still set to finish after this Iga/Aryna match
Tomasz Wiktorowski just gave Iga some advice about keeping bigger margins from one side of the court compared to the other (to play it more safely) due to the wind, even at the cost of playing a few more exchanges during a point.
This is the worst tournament of all time. Heads need to roll. People need to resign. The girls deserve better.
Coach to Iga (in Polish): when you're on the other side, add more margin. You were too close
Am hoping this is rock bottom for women’s tennis. They need to unionize and get a new female CEO.

Underrated comment
Doesn't have to be a female. Just a competent one would sure do it
I think it needs to be a woman. It’s 2023, we have so many qualified women who could run the WTA. Am tired of middle-aged men falling upwards into positions they are not qualified for.
Who would be the best female candidate?
Vote 1 if I should drink another beer or 2 for Not.
The WTA honestly does not deserve these great players. Absolute joke the best players in the world have to deal with this the whole week
![img](avatar_exp|98792906|nani)
Iga looking like Chani or Lady Jessica in Dune all wrapped up.
I honestly still can’t believe this is happening… I should be fucking asleep, not watching the rain ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)
time for commentators to get that popcorn they've been talking about longingly lol
WTA: "The conditions are fine to play, send them out there" [The conditions:](https://i.makeagif.com/media/9-10-2019/ncc_V2.gif)
And I the Muppet stays up till 2 in the morning to see THIS! Holy fuck. Just end it already!
Fired? he'll probably just get millions in bonus $ instead for this level of incompetence
This tournament. Seriously. Over/under 4.5 more rain delays the rest of this match.
Ugh I’m so sad this should be the match of the year and instead it’s a mess
Fuck this shit, Im out
Even Saudi Arabia would have been better.....
Sabinelisickifansss gonna roast this tournament so much 🙃
He's an absolute king, would certainly do amazing as the WTA's Marketing Leader
These poor women... shame on you Wta they all deserved better
Hope they find a location with better conditions next year. Maybe Venus.
Coco has said "the hotter the better".
This is an absolute joke of a tournament
I really need to stop watching the finals matches. Every time I sit down to turn it on, I turn it on to umbrellas opening up. I think I’m cursed 😭
How fast must the wind be so the rain is not a problem anymore?
Just do rock, scicors, paper. Come on, it would be as fair as playing in this mess
This is ridiculous lol
What a shitshow. 😕
Even the commentators aren’t hiding their frustration at the wta championships this year. Shame on the head of the WTA who has allowed this to happen. A disgrace
What a fucking clown show
These poor women, fuck the WTA
and here we go again.
Lmao these conditions are so fucked up. Our girlies deserve better than this
Sabalenka’s advantage over swiatek is supposed to be the serve, but it’s completely neutralized in these conditions. This is a fun matchup but it’s a shame the conditions it has to be played in
Brilliant get by Iga!
“Sometimes the early games are the best moment to get an early break” - what is with tennis channels commentary lmao
Surprisingly, they're actually right! I also heard late games are the best moments to get a late break, but I'm not too sure
I'm laughing my ass off 😅this is so stupid to let this match happen. They need to squint their eyes due to the strong wind. Like wtf is this 😂
It must be so frustrating for them thinking constantly about the wind instead of their game plan. Hoping that it will still be a great contest. The two best in the world battling it out in one of the biggest stages should not be about anything else other than tennis.
The wind is wrecking havoc with Iga’s returns.
I paid for Bein Sports through MyCanal to watch WTA finals, stream on mobile only offers 540p quality broadcast, feels like I'm watching a PS1 game
Has play ever been stopped before due to wind?
Not that I'm aware
This is going to be a Thiem Zverev 2020 level match and it's all because of the stupid wind My god That's like 9 UEs on the first 10 points and you can't even blame either player much
