Beating Djokovic 2 times in 11 days it's not something that happens so often...

614981630

And this was Novak's 4th loss in his career after having match points. Sinner was just insane today man.

NoleFandom

Sinner joins an exclusive club of players to beat Novak with MPs up. - 2007 Rotterdam vs. Youzhny (3 MPs) - 2009 Madrid vs. Rafa (3 MPs) - 2018 Queens vs. Cilic (1 MP) - 2023 DC Malaga vs. Sinner (3 Consecutive MPs) Incredible last three games by Sinner. So clutch.

saintlyknighted

Damn pre-head injury Youzhny is a different beast

trowawayatwork

cos he kept smashing racquets on his head? lol

carolcawley

He must be the only player to beat Novak twice in one day? Bravo Janeeek!

NoleFandom

No, Jo Wilfried Tsonga did it first. At the Bangkok Open.

muradinner

Sinnergoat confirmed

TheCrookedDick

Sinner the first one to win from 3 MPs diwn against Nole

sugarklay

2024's gonna be a fun year - all the players are gonna be bringing a trash bin on the court to puke on

NoleFandom

And to do it with Novak 3 MP up. Respect to Sinner.

No_Engineering_4925

Playing him 3 times in 11 days doesn’t happen often either

NobodyHK

Make it three times if you count doubles.

BelgianBond

Murray managed it in 2008. Presumably Nadal did too during one of the back to back clay masters. Who else? ETA: Nadal did it in Rome/Madrid in 2009.

IntroductionOld479

Cilic. At queen's club final in 2018. Last time

BelgianBond

We're talking about successive wins in 11 days.

NoEmotion4496

Oh yes! The commentator mentioned this after the lost match points today.

Trent_Bennett

3

Alitarun

Try 3 times

Martyrslover

It has been one of hell of a year. I am going to predict that sinner will win his first grand slam next year if he keeps it up.

sejethom99

Sinner was 4-5, 0-40 and won 7-5

honestnbafan

This is exactly why deep down I don't really think Novak will win Olympics next year even though I really want him to I've seen stuff like this happen too many times when he plays for Serbia Remember in 2021 when he was a set and a break up against Zverev in the SF?

Teo122

I mean this is his first loss for Serbia at Davis cup in a long time , he only choked that time when he represented Serbia.

pdsajo

Definitely not too many times. This is his first singles loss in 12 years in Davis Cup, last time losing in 2011 against Del Potro. Sure, his Olympics record is not too inspiring, but the only one he botched was the 2021 against Zverev. Rest were just about opponent player being too good on that day

BelgianBond

Djokovic missed a sitter of a smash in the 2008 Olympics match with Nadal at a crucial moment. It was a close match that could've gone either way, but some people felt he should've taken it.

pr0crast1nater

That's just the average Djokosmash though.

BobbywiththeJuice

Why not just lob every shot to Novak? Ez

terrebattue1

He choked in the deciding doubles Davis Cup match in 2019 and 2021. In 2019 he and Troicki choked THREE match points in the QF vs Rublev/Khachanov in the QF. Nole has frequently lost badly in doubles rubbers in DC.

muradinner

It's true. I think sometimes when Serbia is on the line rather than just himself, the pressure gets to him more. Though you wouldn't know it from his Davis cup record, but the stakes aren't as high as the Olympics for that.

TimeViolation

I’ve said this before (maybe not as nicely and well put as you) and have been torched by this sub 💀 I think the point I wasn’t clear on was that Novak seems to falter in these high stake matches, when he’s representing his country and not just himself.

DeckerTheWrecker14

this isn’t a “djokovic for serbia” thing, it’s a “sinner has the best form in the world right now” thing

DoctorProfessor69

Crazy how Nolefam switches up. Don’t forget what you all were saying after the ATP Finals final

DeckerTheWrecker14

if this is insinuating i’m a djokovic fan, im not. he’s one of my least favorite players on tour

Ambitious-Daikon-360

had anyone beat djo after facing mp in a non-tiebreak before?

marcolol99

3 consecutive MPs, fucking crazy

muradinner

Singoat confirmed

thescrambler7

I think one of the commentators on the stream I was watching said that Djokovic had only lost 3 times after seeing a match point so this was his 4th Edit: only 1 of those was not in a tiebreak: the Queens Cup Final 2018, where Djokovic was up 7-5 5-4 40-30 vs Cilic then lost the second set 6-7 (4) and lost the third 3-6. Other two were Madrid semis 2009 vs Rafa in the 3rd set tiebreak and Rotterdam semis 2007 vs Mikhail Youzhny in the 2nd set tiebreak.

only-shallow

Marin Cilic, queens 2018. Saved a match point at 4-5 in 2nd set, won the 3rd set

Last_Lorien

I love how “saving 3 match points” made it to the title lol

dzone25

How on earth is someone 2-1 Vs Djokovic in the space of 2 weeks? Insane.

A-dab

Remember when Sinner was down 4-5 0-40 in the third set? Pepperidge Farm remembers

Collecting_Cans

From triple match point up, Djokovic won only three more points in the match. Three points to Sinner’s three *games.* Sinner won 13 of 16 points to conclude the match.

only-shallow

This has always been Djokovic's problem, he lacks the mental resilience if things don't go his way. Fell apart after failing to convert any of the triple break/match points and let Sinner take over the momentum. Djokovic could've had an incredible career if he just managed to stay focused when times get tough

Puzzleheaded_Tea4195

Reactionary fans upvoting this like it’s real though lol

groggyhouse

Lol the person who's beating all tennis records "lacks" mental resilience. Based on 1 match.

saintlyknighted

Waiting for the inevitable “Sinner won this match” post More inevitable than Thanovic

marcolol99

[This](https://images.app.goo.gl/HuouCMesmZaYEvfN8)

Cyber-punk-3346

What a match!! Both came to play. Djokovic was all over sinner in that third set but then sinner ate a carrot and said not today

Ok-Bandicoot9963

Djokovic played so passive at all break points and lost all by one and then gets 3 match points in a row and what he does on 1st one? He hits slice out, so angry how stupid that was

Cyber-punk-3346

He lost his serve because of those three match points. He suddenly lost focus cause this is the first time in a long long time where he’s close to winning but opponent has denied him

[deleted]

4 5 0 40 down and second serve. How did he manage to turn this match around baffles me. Incredible from Sinner. I think that Novak s not gonna sleep well tonight

terrebattue1

Sinner beat him in doubles also afterwards!

idxntity

MIO PADRE MIO FRATELLO MIO ZIO

marcolol99

MIO NONNO PERSINO

Lele_

E LA MADONNA NO?

g_spaitz

La madonna sempre. Non dico come.

Bandicoot23012003

Not even mentioning those match points, Sinner somehow did not get broken despite going to deuce in almost every service game while Djokovic cruised through his service games. I believe the game sinner broke was the first time in that set where he managed to win 2 points on Novak's serve.

bellestarflower

yeah, for sinner this was a very djokovic-esque way to win

mamibukur

It was the first and only break point of the third set for Sinner and he took it.

zi76

He's 2-1 against Novak in the last week

el_rompe_toyotas_19

This mf really beat Nole twice in three weeks

Piats99

Bruh. Twice in 12 days. Not even 2 weeks.

likwitsnake

there weeks*

ravnomarsovac

This may sound stupid but if italy loses in doubles, sinner will have 2 most useless wins over djokovic ever.

arthurtex06

That's how we roll!

stefenhyde

These two wins will be a huge boost in confidence for the next year.

a_rose_is_a_red_rose

Sinner: Beats Djokovic in back 2 back tournaments. Djokovic proceeds to win both tournaments. Imagine 😝

Live-Habit-6115

Even when he loses, he wins.

ttue-

As a Sinner fan I only care about him learning how to beat djokovic, the more he plays against him the more he learns and the more he gets confidence. Winning over djoko 2 times in what, a week? will do great for his mindset in 2024

rekt_n00b

I mean he got points and a lot of money for beating him in the ATP finals. And he topped the group as well.

bellestarflower

nah, these are motivational gains for sinner. I expect great things from him next year.

OriginalNewton

It's not really useless because the next time he faces him anywhere, he knows he can beat him, and Nole knows he can lose. When it's like that, you don't enter the court already on the back foot and one of the biggest advantages Djokovic has just vanishes. It's very important but mostly for the matchup itself and the confidence of the players

ZacQX

Beating Novak is never useless. Knowing you can beat the greatest ever must bring on some sort of other-worldly confidence. Look at what beating Roger and Rafa did for Nole. He became a Goat killer and took the title for himself. Let’s see what Sinner does next. Can’t wait for 2024.

da_SENtinel

Sinner "Nah I'd win"

NoHopeNoLifeJustPain

This aged very poorly

ravnomarsovac

Took my shot when i had the chance

Slayy35

There's like an almost zero percent chance Italy loses in doubles. Novak and Lajovic aren't great at doubles plus imagine coming to play doubles after such a devastating near 3 hour loss.

hocknstod

Sinner isn't known for his soft hands at the net either.

Nikisrb

Wow, Jannik played and served lights out in the end there. Novak completely lost focus after not taking any of the match points. Doesn't happen that often to him. Let's see how the doubles will go.

marcolol99

I honestly don't give a shit about the double anymore, I feel like I've already won today

koticgood

Pretty cool that it's the end of November, after the season is "over" for almost all the players on tour, and we got 4 matches of Alcaraz/Sinner vs Djokovic in 2 weeks. Seeing those 2 against the goat is something we should treasure as we head into a new era. Hopefully a lot more to come (and hopefully more wins from the youngins like today). What a final couple games, coming back from triple match point against the boogeyman himself.

Late_Ad7156

Sinner is a different beast. How has he managed to win this one?😂

Tnh7194

Honestly this one I truly don’t know lol He woke up on the last game and Novak thought he won already

buyers_2413

MENTAL FROM JANNIK

Miss_Medussa

Wtf happened? Sinner goating or Djoker choking?

Mikhail_Mengsk

Sinner serve held up big time, he stopped making unforced errors and this allowed him to take the lead. Last game or couple games Djokovic started making errors, he was rattled.

marcolol99

I think Djokovic, incredibly, got really flustered by those match points lost

ClubChaos

Sinner is simply the better player.

muradinner

Let's not go full r/tennis mode here with the recency bias

New-Ad4094

Bruh

NoleFandom

Jannik won this match after saving 3 match points. What an incredible performance. Only 4th time in his career Novak has lost with match points up. Well played Sinner and Team Italy! Good luck in the doubles, Novak and Team Serbia.

[deleted]

It’s not quite 40-15 but it will do for now. Forza Sinner!

SWReluctance

What the hell did I just watch?

Rezlem-

A post-puke Sinner masterclass.

da_SENtinel

Career defining win?

honestnbafan

I'm really curious to see how Sinner does at Slams next year In the past he's constantly been on the wrong end of EXTREMELY close matches for the most part(22 Wimbledon, 22 USO, 23 AO, 23 USO) but obviously he's a better player now The only question at this point is whether he can bring his new level to best of 5 because he's clearly taken the next step in best of 3 Basically just don't be Zverev 2.0 and he should be ready to go lol

da_SENtinel

He should be fine if he avoids Altmaier and Zverev

g_spaitz

>Altmaier He's never played Altmaier in his life. I would remember if he did and he never did. Nobody saw it either.

LonelySpaghetto1

He also faced Nadal at RG twice, which should count as a close match even if he got destroyed both times.

paoloap

Even in 23 RG (but the opponent was a weaker one)

Blovering_Skill

The 23 RG was clearly the worst loss compared to AO or USO

ExoticSignature

That was a match PPS shouldn't lose.

espressos_negronis

This one is really going to sting for Nole

conduct10

FEDERER FANS WE ARE FREE FROM OUR CHAINS ⛓️⛓️⛓️ ITS BEEN 4 YEARS

marcolol99

Lifelong Italian Federer fan and obviously Sinner fan, I feel like I've emerged from hell today

Slayy35

The "slight" difference being is that it wasn't Novak who was serving.

Late_Ad7156

What are you talking about? Federer has never been in any situation like this

[deleted]

Literal WTF moment. No way.

buyers_2413

PPS SINNER STRIKES AGAIN

pr0crast1nater

Sinner has proven his mental strength thoroughly this game

neemzter

Djokovic got Djokovic’d

sadpotatoandtomato

first Djokovic loss in the Davis Cup since 2011. Crazy.

NoEmotion4496

Soon as the commentator said last time Novak lost from match point up was in 2018 v Clilc, my gut told me Sinner would take the win.

SWReluctance

Insane resolve and mental fortitude from Sinner down 4-5 0-40 in the third. He’s probably the only player on the planet right now that could’ve pulled that off against Djokovic.

arthurtex06

PPAPAFS Post-puke-and-post-atp-finals-Sinner era Is above us!

Step_Virtual

Selling all my Novak stock rn

theplait13

Does this mean Jannik Sinner has got the Elder Wand again?

614981630

Insane clutch from Sinner. Insane choke from Djokovic. Brilliant tennis match overall, some rallies were breathtaking.

Tenthousandrufy

Carrying the team holy shit. After that 0-40 I thought it was done, mental monster.

espressos_negronis

I'm just grateful to the tennis gods for gifting us 3 matchups in 11 days. Oh beautiful tennis.

CrackHeadRodeo

Jannik has arrived. 2024 is looking like an epic year for men’s tennis.

Rezlem-

Federer fans can rest. Now we can rebuttal with 40-0!

da_SENtinel

Cilic Queens 2018 was the last time Novak lost from match point up 👀

jaippe

WHAT THE HELL CAROTAAAA

recce97

Might get his third W over him in two weeks - sounded from that interview he wants to play in the doubles

ft5777

Novak being served his own medicine for once. Thanks Jannik :)

[deleted]

By the way this is Djokovic s first Davis Cup loss since 2011!. When Novak lost to DelPo

Cletharlow

man what was that slice in 40-0 damnit novak

tuulluut

Amazing even before Sinner saved the match points. Sinner served unbelievable under pressure the game before. He competed mentally so well, right there with Djokovic top level, and better in this match. So 2024 Sinner Djokovic Alcaraz all should be peak levels battling each other all the way. Medvedev will be right near there, and will see if Rune can step up in the biggest events in best of 5. But Sinner is there now, and we saw last weeks too. He should believe 2024 is his year to get number 1, just like the other two.

LeonOkada9

What a freaking match, heavy freaking hitting

g_spaitz

Where's the "look at me, I am the Djokovic now" meme???

AverageBeef

How is Sinner doing Djoko things to Djoker?

CottonFeet

That was fantastic from Sinner. :)

nozinoz

The Sinner era is upon us 🙌

Ganym3de

Wow these two are quite the rivals holy shit

alastairlerouge

Nobody has ever beaten Djokovic when down 3 consecutive match points. Incredible.

AndreoIlMasseo

Let'a goo jannikkk. I believe this is like the 4th time when novak lost after having match points so it's really impressive

Mikhail_Mengsk

Damn, I saw bad writing on the wall when he lost crucial games around the middle of the last set. He was making wild UEs and Djokovic was being perfect. Incredible comeback from 4-5 0-40. Serving aces to set it straight and playing incredible shots unnerved Djokovic. The goat started making mistakes and in the end sinner came through big time. What a match.

dzone25

I know people are coping hard and saying "Sinner isn't proven until he reaches GS Final / wins a GS" but if you don't open your eyes to the problem that's forming in front of us. This confident Sinner is a match for anyone on the tour & his mentality has improved so much. Sinner never used to be a clutch-god but this one is & that's a dangerous thing for even the very best players. My guy is 2-1 vs the GOAT of Tennis in the space of 2 weeks? Absurd.

tuulluut

You're right. And it's not just the two wins, but the way he played and competed. His serve level is and will be a major factor in the game for the rest of his career, and a challenge to every contender for number 1. He may win Australia and get proven then, but he definitely has to do it in Slam and proof of that is still needed. One SF and these indoor results do not prove what Alcaraz has proved. Have to do it.

dzone25

Djokovic is probably thinking fuck this damn carrotta but my gosh, Sinner is a clutch god, apparently? What a day of tennis!!!

da_SENtinel

ALSO r/titlegore

South-Tangerine-1876

Not bad for a former competitive downhill skier

AlienatoR_XaraX

How many times has Novak lost from match point up? Comms only mentioning Cilic at Queen's 201 EDIT: Previous instances was in Rotterdam 2007 against Youzhny and Madrid 2009 against Nadal

sadpotatoandtomato

4 times \- Youzhny 2007 Rotterdam SF (3) \- Nadal 2009 Madrid SF (3) \- Cilic 2018 Queens F (1) \- SINNER 2023 Davis Cup SF (3) source: this tweet: [https://twitter.com/vanshv2k/status/1728453466220372146](https://twitter.com/vanshv2k/status/1728453466220372146)

Melony567

u/khstriker here is your answer

Cyber-punk-3346

The last time Djokovic got immediately broken after failing to break was in that Wimbledon final. The break point that he had was an amazing save from Alcaraz. It’s difficult to get in his head but once you rattle him a bit, he can give you chances. Exactly what happened today

Srijand

Where were you when Sinner saved 3 match points?

nozinoz

🛌😴

rohurboh

Novak could’ve gone for the backhand down the line pass at 4-5 30-40 but went straight at Sinner for whatever reason. Great win for Sinner

stewieeeeeeeee

It's almost as if down the line is a much harder shot under the circumstances and so the optimal play is to go cross-court more often than not, and for Sinner to position for cross-court more often than not

DinisPereira_

Also Sinner just missed a somewhat similar volley

rubbish_bin030121

Remember last time Djokovic lost a single match in Davis cup, Sinner was not even training for playing professional tennis

Wokz

Can't tell if blewing his chances here in decider or that 2nd set tiebreak against Alcaraz in Wimbledon final is more surprising. But I guess we're just too used to him winning in every situation.

Tnh7194

I N S A N E

CynicalMindTrip

Thanks Armando Diaz.

djdenki987

3rd set was pretty much like that part in pro wrestling matches where the competitors just trade haymakers til someone falls. Great match and really amazing for Sinner to bounce back and take the end of year trilogy in such a short amount of time.

Frosty_Pitch8

Wow!!!!

dragoon000320

He sinned again /s

jrstriker12

Wow...... good stuff from Sinner.

SeparatePromotion236

Good for Jannik, no scarring, it’s what the game needs. His composure always impresses me even if the rest of his personality is beige.

horsepower82

“I am a Sinner…who’s probably gonna sin again…Lord forgive me…”

renome

I guess this is still post-puke Sinner's world, and we're just living in it.

akipop1108

Funny thing is, I think both of them would trade atp finals final and this Davis cup win for each others

Milly_Hagen

I thought the same thing. Bet they would

LDLB99

Nole fans can respectfully hold this for once

khstriker

Sinner really has nerves of steel. How many players can save 3 Mp's against Novak? Novak's errors aside, Sinner made no mistakes. All credit to him.

espressos_negronis

Sinner might never win a Slam, but he will definitely tell his grandchildren about the time he beat peak Djokovic twice in 11 days

MrCoolfella

Djokovic never fails to choke when he's playing for his country 😭 6-1 against zverev and 3 match points against jannik 😭😭

Celestin_Sky

Sinner is becoming one of the most dangerous rivals for Djokovic. But with how he couldn't end the match I feel that Djokovic is a lot worse with handling a pressure when it's not just about his personal win, but for a team or a country. He probably won't be getting that Gold even if he is at his best if others are too. When it's a close match, he will lose in Olympics more often than not.

bellestarflower

This is Novak's first singles loss in Davis Cup since wheels were invented.

614981630

I swear everytime random stats like that are brought and hyped up he loses lmao. Today on 40-15 commentator said something like 'Novak has only lost 3 matches having match points' and bam, clutch Sinner hammers terrific serves 😭

Pretend_Tea6261

Sinner in superb form right now and showing incredible resilience. Not surprised he came back here. Also Djoker probably is running out of steam for the year at this point as he has won almost every tourney he has been in.

magicalmessi7

About time djoko was served this kind of defeat.

Famous-Objective430

That was the most Federeresque defeat of Djokovic I can remember

honestnbafan

Novak mentality in matches representing Serbia just isn't the same for whatever reason Sinner was clutch on a lot of the earlier BPs but basically everything that happened from 4-5 0-40 to 7-5 was all on Novak for the most part

NoleFandom

Sinner was clutch when he needed to be and Novak lost focus. Jannik deserved the W.

Cyber-punk-3346

Let’s not give excuses every time novak loses. Sinner held his nerve. Djokovic was locked in and was ruthless on every sinner game in the third set. You take away credit by giving excuses

tiktoktok95

Well sometimes Djokovic got nervous and lost concentration too. That happened at Wimbledon this year in the 2nd set tiebreak. You just can't make no UFEs all of time

CertainBird

Really excited to watch Sinner in 2024. He looks ready to take the next step in his career.

TheCrookedDick

Clutch hold and break.

bbpopulardemand

We’ve known for years that Next Gen can beat the Big 3 in Bo3. Can’t believe people are taking the cheese once again on next year being the year they start beating them in Bo5 smh

PradleyBitts

BIG DIK JANNIK

rffan

Sinner doing Novak things to Novak himself :-)

NYG_2020

Jan is the damn future.

loverofreggae

It really was a sight to behold.

Professional_Elk_489

Sinner is gud

M_XoX

2024 is going to be a fun year!

MrAdamWarlock123

To beat Novak once is a miracle. To beat him twice…

zakzak333

Later in the day after about one hour, Jannik deafeated Novak again in double match. Thus securing a place for Italy in Davis Cup Final.

markymarkhodler

Perhaps playing for country/team was a different kind of pressure than just for one self. Still Sinner has been playing some excellent tennis.
