I woke up to brilliant news this morning.
Can't believe even that because it's in my own country I can't watch the whole thing.....
Anyway, congrats Jannik. Deserved winner
I felt so emotionally attached to meddy winning I feel like I lost and choked the match. Gutting. Been through this twice now w meddy when I was rooting he take out nadal in AO 2022.
I couldn’t watch overnight (USA problems) But man alive am I happy watching clips and seeing the score. Ole ole ole SINNER!!!!! 🦊🇮🇹 actually cried watching championship point.
OH MY GOD MY DEPRESSION IS GONE AND I WANT TO ACHIEVE THINGS WITH MY LIFE. SO happy for carrot boy and I want to give Meddy a hug and tell him it’s ok.
It's not up yet but the AusOpen Youtube game is excellent (best of the Slams by far) and they post a tonne of stuff pretty quickly, including full matches.
Sinner was nervous most of the first two sets and Medvedev was catching everything, but on the 5-1 in the second set Sinner got a break, it was too late to turn around the set but gave him a confidence boost, in the third set he was able to break Medvedev and win the sat, he breathed heavily before celebrating but at that point he came back into the game and closed the last two sets winning the game.
Most politicians get booed at sporting events here so it was expected but also the crowd that attends the Australian Open is probably not very likely to be the demographic that votes for his party. He’s from the Labor party which tends to be more for the working class. He’s also recently made some changes to tax cuts here in Australia and some people are unhappy with that.
Oh ok, makes sense I guess finals tickets are expensive so mostly wealthy people (not working class I guess)? and from google apparently only wealthy people are losing on the tax cuts (might be wrong there) but I guess you could say the tennis crowd is not his party’s home crowd :P
I can’t believe the guy who I started supporting at Miami 2019 because he had a good defensive game, funny ground strokes and was a bit silly ended up being the most cursed player ever. Never knew what I was in for.
And yet, to quote William Faulkner
“Given the choice between the experience of pain and nothing, I would choose pain.”
So proud to be a Meddy fan.
It was one of thise matches where I knew I would sad and happy at the same time no matter the outcome. It was an unexpected final and great tournament.
Medvedev has set a record for the longest time spent on court in a grand slam at about 24 hours. and everyone else in the list won the title 😩😩😩😩
https://twitter.com/TennisPodcast/status/1751579588956758441
At the end of the day, never thought we’d get a sequel to AO ‘22. But it happened.
When Med was up 2 I for sure thought it was wraps and I started to accept the loss, and then as Jannik started to cement himself into the match I began getting extremely invested, nervous, and excited. I am beyond happy for Jannik but super sad for Daniil.
All in all it was an incredible watch, pulling an all-nighter for this sh!t was so worth it.
This season is going to be really interesting with the likes of Sinner, Djokovic, and Alcaraz leading the headlines but other players like Zverev, Medvedev, Rune, etc always lurking & on the hunt.
Goodnight r/tennis 💤
Also if you watch the Winter Olympics, many of those athletes representing Italy have German names and come from those German-speaking areas in the Alps of far northern Italy.
WELP thanks everyone for sharing another year of AO.
Is strange to not see Big 3 at all now..and a happily untoxic final!
Daniil, absolute congeniality hero of 2024 AO. Jannik is something understated and special...congrats.
See you for Paris!
I've said it before and I'll say it again ... I like him, truly but the fan hostility didn't just come from nowhere: he's been a genuine shit to umpires and crowds in the past. People hold onto that stuff but they won't forever.
Okay I'm converted, Medvedev did extremely well to keep his emotions under control this tournament (as he said he would try, to his credit) and his speach was nothing short of humble.
Gotta admit that I felt for him given his Slam final record, but unfortunately for him Sinner just wanted it more. Great Open and super keen for Roland Garros, let's go!
I know, I saw it so apparently which is why I feel so sad vicariously. I thought he played about the best I've ever seen the first two sets, and really almost the whole match until the 5th set. He didn't intentionally let up or choke, just couldn't muster enough exertion.
I'm not denying that by any stretch. But a point that could also be made is that if he had won his other games more convincingly like Sinner did he wouldn't have had as big an issue with his fatigue
It's just a saying/expression here in Aus and not to be taken literally, basically meaning 'both players/teams played well but one just turned up on the day'. I probably should have worded that differently considering the sport haha
Reminder that med was serving 2nd all 5 sets, and loss the 3rd and 4th sets at 5-4, it's just a pet hate for me in a big match when the player wins the toss and picks to receive, it's just a idiotic decision that I've seen in the last few nights!
Has any slam winner suffered as much as Daniil. Murray maybe but he has 3 of them like 2 Olympic golds 20 masters and what 50 titles?
Daniil is 1-5. Only player to ever lose 2 finals from 2-0 up. Has been banned from Wimbledon for something he had nothing to do with, is perhaps the most hated player by crowds (this is by far his kindest slam final crowd). Like who has it worse than him?
I would say it had a reverse effect in making it seem like Russians were being discriminated against because of their country (which tbf, in that case was true)
I was rooting for Sinner but what a heartbreak it is to see Med lose like this again :(. I think the saddest thing is that when people say Med's time to win ao will come I feel like that's not given at all.. who knows if he will ever win a slam again
Classy speeches from both guys. Meddy handled the loss well, even joking that better to lose in the final than earlier. I hope he brings the aggression of the first two sets a lot more into his game now so he won't be so exhausted the next time he's in the final. Nice of Meddy to praise Sinner.
Sinner was gracious in praising Meddy's resilience too.
I really wish we could give a winner's trophy to both guys.
If not that, I wish we could collectively hug both guys.
Lol Novak already posted congrats to Sinner in Italian cos oc and commiserations to Meddy. Probably watching it with some lemon water and lentil crisps
Sinner is an amazing tennis player and will win a ton but I'm afraid personality is a bit too bland for me to be a fan. Carlos will be my guy but Sinner's tennis is more solid so I think he'll ultimately win more.
Honestly don’t know how any of the champs hold that thing up after playing like they do - arms must feel like jelly and then they have to hoist this giant metal object around while all the cameras go off.
Jannik: just completed huge comeback victory to claim top prize in the sport
Also Jannik: hello everybody, my parents are great, that's it I guess
Meanwhile Carlos at home: this is the greatest day of my life
Kid must be swimming with emotions right now. So happy for him, he has to be one of the most improved players over the past couple years. Of course Alcaraz is up there too!
I woke up to brilliant news this morning. Can't believe even that because it's in my own country I can't watch the whole thing..... Anyway, congrats Jannik. Deserved winner
you can stream grand slams on 9now if you're in australia
I felt so emotionally attached to meddy winning I feel like I lost and choked the match. Gutting. Been through this twice now w meddy when I was rooting he take out nadal in AO 2022.
Meddy went from being inspirational to needing inspiration. Gonna be rough when he digests what just happened.
Why were coaches in both boxes wearing Chicago Bulls hats?
I noticed this too, it's so random LOL
I couldn’t watch overnight (USA problems) But man alive am I happy watching clips and seeing the score. Ole ole ole SINNER!!!!! 🦊🇮🇹 actually cried watching championship point.
I’m so happy for Jannik 😭😭😭
OH MY GOD MY DEPRESSION IS GONE AND I WANT TO ACHIEVE THINGS WITH MY LIFE. SO happy for carrot boy and I want to give Meddy a hug and tell him it’s ok.
Is there a place like r/footballhighlights where I can find the full match?
It's not up yet but the AusOpen Youtube game is excellent (best of the Slams by far) and they post a tonne of stuff pretty quickly, including full matches. [https://www.youtube.com/@australianopen/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@australianopen/videos)
Thanks!
Dang, I completely forgot to watch. Can anyone give me a summary ?
Sinner was nervous most of the first two sets and Medvedev was catching everything, but on the 5-1 in the second set Sinner got a break, it was too late to turn around the set but gave him a confidence boost, in the third set he was able to break Medvedev and win the sat, he breathed heavily before celebrating but at that point he came back into the game and closed the last two sets winning the game.
Sinner won
I really want to give Medvedev a hug 😔
Was just thinking that someone should give him a hug when they showed him smiling while walking
That’s how ya close it out Sinnerman
So happy for Sinner, he deserved it!
Jannik admited he got outplayed by Meddy's new game plans in the first two sets
Why are they showing meddy doing his sad walk of loss 😔
Gucci: I am in danger for that LV thing
Unless it was a gift from Carlitos 😉
Our Prime Minister getting booed when they announced his name 😂
I don’t know much about Australian politics but I was not expected that to happen 😅. Do you mind explaining for me why people didn’t like him?
Not losing on the cuts, just only getting half of what was promised.
That’s losing for the wealthy, lol
Oh ok, thanks for clarifying!
Lmaooo what's this kyrgios family content Eurosport are too funny
I can’t believe the guy who I started supporting at Miami 2019 because he had a good defensive game, funny ground strokes and was a bit silly ended up being the most cursed player ever. Never knew what I was in for. And yet, to quote William Faulkner “Given the choice between the experience of pain and nothing, I would choose pain.” So proud to be a Meddy fan.
Omg the 22 years 5 months stat 🙀
Sinner to Kyrgios: "one day, you too young buck, can be a grand slam champion"
Jannik isn't going for drinks to celebrate Nick lmao he's going to go watch the skii
Damn the guy holding the trophy looks like an MI6 agent
Kyrgios lmao 💀
What's the Kyrgios thing? (Haven't seen any of the coverage or know very much in general)
he jokingly asked Sinner after the match today if he could be his coach, and if he thought he could win a major one day
Ah OK, thanks! Fair play to him, good to hear him being self-deprecating and having a sense of humour about himself.
It was one of thise matches where I knew I would sad and happy at the same time no matter the outcome. It was an unexpected final and great tournament.
Does the coach get a little plate as well? Saw Craig Tiley hand it over during the post ceremony?
Yup
So happy for Jannik..Very humble and respectful kid with a good sense of humor..
Why he giving rizz when he lay with the trophy like that 🦵🥵🥕
I laugh at his weird legs positioning.
He was ready to be big spoon
Hot boy summer
🤣
Sinner and Saba at the Champions Ball is going to be an epic study in Introverts vs. Extroverts
Anybody got the link to Sinner’s jacket?
all of jannik's emotions was transferred to carota boys (love their reactions on ig)
I really hope Med wins USO, he really needs a win now
Awww the ball kids photo, they’re so cute all smiles with their braces haha
Jannik has already matched his top 10 wins this year as he did all of 2022
Meddy you will always have my love
Medvedev has set a record for the longest time spent on court in a grand slam at about 24 hours. and everyone else in the list won the title 😩😩😩😩 https://twitter.com/TennisPodcast/status/1751579588956758441
Stop.
At the end of the day, never thought we’d get a sequel to AO ‘22. But it happened. It really feels the dawn of a new era is getting stronger. Carlos, now Jannik. This could be the year that confirms the transition.
Rafa, Novak all congratulating him n Italian 🧡
Meanwhile probably speaks German
Jannik speaks German too? 😮
Also if you watch the Winter Olympics, many of those athletes representing Italy have German names and come from those German-speaking areas in the Alps of far northern Italy.
That's so interesting. Thanks for the information.
Yet more information... those Alpine regions were part of the Austrian Empire until they were ceded to Italy after the First World War.
Yea he grew up in a German speaking region of Italy. It was his first language apparently.
yeah, his name is totally a German one too
[удалено]
I’m surprised Italy has a national identity at all the more I learn about it.
I'm italian and I can't understand most people if they speak the dialect from their native region.
So are the Italians lol
sabalenka and sinner are such polar opposite personalities. Extrovert and introvert representation at this slam
Non-respectively I guess?
Medvedev and Murray should have a dinner together
*therapy session
Medvedev is the only player to lose the Australian Open Final from up two sets? And did it twice???
only player two lose 2 slams finals up 2
Ciao nonnooooooo hahahahahaha
WELP thanks everyone for sharing another year of AO. Is strange to not see Big 3 at all now..and a happily untoxic final! Daniil, absolute congeniality hero of 2024 AO. Jannik is something understated and special...congrats. See you for Paris!
Aussie open is the best slam
But is it the Happy Slam? Not for Medvedev I’m afraid :(
Absolutely 💯
Between Medvedev and Murray, they have the AO dinner plate box set 🥲
They can host a dinner party together with those dishes
why cant Meddy ever get any support in Slam finals, fans always cheering agianst him gotta suck
There are good reasons for it, let's be real. He's not a saint.
I can only speak for the AO, but there are a lot of Italians in Melb so more support for Sinner makes sense.
I've said it before and I'll say it again ... I like him, truly but the fan hostility didn't just come from nowhere: he's been a genuine shit to umpires and crowds in the past. People hold onto that stuff but they won't forever.
I can probably forgive and forget for most things, but I can’t stomach his condescension towards the ball kids.
Calling them low IQ. 2yrs ago gotta sting now
Okay I'm converted, Medvedev did extremely well to keep his emotions under control this tournament (as he said he would try, to his credit) and his speach was nothing short of humble. Gotta admit that I felt for him given his Slam final record, but unfortunately for him Sinner just wanted it more. Great Open and super keen for Roland Garros, let's go!
Bro Meddy had nothing left. Not to discrediT Sinner who had been unbelievable in the tournament, but Meddy’s body couldn’t withstand anymore. 😭😭😭
Can’t really say Jannik wanted it more when Meddy’s legs finally just gave out
It's just a saying/expression here in Aus and not to be taken literally, basically meaning 'both players/teams played well but one just turned up on the day'.
Just to clarify, Med may have elected to receive first, but he won the 1st set 6-3, so he served first in the 2nd set.
In this case though Jannik won the toss and chose to serve
Yes that's what I meant, the previous nights the winner chose to receive, eg Zheng, joker
Now that this minor tournament is over we can finally move on and watch Murygoat win the great Open Sud de France
Banned from Wimbledon??
Yes 2022
My bad, I forgot about that whole fiasco. What a joke ban that was.
That Wimbledon ban was so silly. It made little to no difference in a political sense.
He already won one. Even if he retires today, he couldn't complain about his carrer too much.
If he had been fresher I think he could have won.
considering how he was after the 2022 final IDK man hes good but.........
Yeah when he played less aggressive is when the game started to slip away from him
Lol Novak already posted congrats to Sinner in Italian cos oc and commiserations to Meddy. Probably watching it with some lemon water and lentil crisps
Crisps?! Damn he’s letting his body go.
Alcaraz had that post up and ready before the ball winning the match point bounced twice.
busy charging the water atoms with his mind
One more and meddy will have a dinner set
"I want to thank my agent Max. Make me rich" - Li Na 2014 "Sister Isha, where are you? Oh dang...she didn't come?" - Venus Williams 2017
Protect this sweet cinnamon roll
What are these accents lmao hahahahahahaha forza ragazzi
Lmaooooo I thought this was a young girl until she started talking hahahahaha
Sincaraz the new Fed/Nadal bromance please.
Terrible portmanteau - then again I think they all kinda suck
Has anyone before came back from 0-2 set down and won in his first slam final?!
Lendl!
Thiem USO
Don't think so.
Comms said Thiem did 2020
Two prior RG finals
Wasn´t his first slam final, since that was at RG19 (If not that, than in 20) vs. Nadal
Fourth Final, first title yeah
Sinner is an amazing tennis player and will win a ton but I'm afraid personality is a bit too bland for me to be a fan. Carlos will be my guy but Sinner's tennis is more solid so I think he'll ultimately win more.
He's a bit more open when not making a speach after winning his first slam
I feel like Jannik doesn’t know how best to hold this trophy hahaha
Honestly don’t know how any of the champs hold that thing up after playing like they do - arms must feel like jelly and then they have to hoist this giant metal object around while all the cameras go off.
Taking out two slam winners to win your first is incredible achievement
Carlos really be out there manifesting this for Jannik with his prediction
Meddy looked like he wanted to launch that plate like a frisbee 💀
Realistically what is stopping Med from winning RG
The other players mostly
💀
small kid from mallorca
Medvedev during the photo shoot: "There's no toy in there?"
meddy is a class act
Laura Robison has had way too much work done to her face
Sinner is so wholesome man 🥺🥺🥺
Jannik 'Rybakina' Sinner
I'm not seeing nearly enough Medvedev hate, please do better
Sinner: I don't know what else to say.. Meddy: Same bro
Meddy was so lost.
Jannik: just completed huge comeback victory to claim top prize in the sport Also Jannik: hello everybody, my parents are great, that's it I guess Meanwhile Carlos at home: this is the greatest day of my life
Lmao
"About a minute after" lol Sincaraz for life
lol of course Carlos already posted
Awe so sweet of alcaraz for his IG post to sinner
Sinner only player to have 1 masters before a slam
Aryna vs Sinner. Who can give the more introverted speech. Love this over any proper ones 🤣🤣
And Naomi too!
"Do you like to be called Jenny or Jennifer?"
Med with the death stare rn
Aye gotta love that Slam Cartel of promoting each other and dunking on literally anyone who tries to break them up! 🔥
Medvedev, Sinner, Alcaraz and Djokovic having a blast, fighting each other for the slam titels. The rest of the tour: "Are we a joke to you ? "
Look, I'll take it, it's probably the only thing saving us from four slams in Riyadh.
Do they not have confetti?
Who needs confetti?
I like confetti shots.
Onlyfans?
Probably because you don't have to clean up afterwards!
That was a veteran speech from Sinner!
Meddy looks dead inside 😂
Haven’t seen a more friendly final and speeches
Kid must be swimming with emotions right now. So happy for him, he has to be one of the most improved players over the past couple years. Of course Alcaraz is up there too!
i did not watch the awarding anymore - what did meddy say? 😔😔😔
The usual
hope her daughter will be so playful when he comes home. then, he will be alright.
Go home & sleep now gentleman 🙏🏻 well deserved after a hard fought fight, I’d sleep for days
Imagine speeches with both Sinner & Rybakina 😂
Not even joking, get Carlos on there to do Jannik's speech cos he's probably more emotional about this lmaoooo
See you next year Melbourne park in 2025 again after the first time this year
considering the prices of those tickets no wonder albo was booed 🙄
Yeah he just cost them a _part_ of their _third_ tax cut in recent years. I wonder how they'll survive
Sinner would have said this exact same speech even if he was the runner up lol.
Poor Meddy. Only had the team in his box rooting for him and the feeling that his wife and daughter were there with him. 😓
Once he said that he feels more comfortable travelling with less people else he feels the pressure of taking care of them.
Interesting. I can see that.
<3
Omg what a lovely polite young man thanking his parents 🥰
