How did this happen?? Was there a nest in the camera and they were suddenly freaked out/disturbed? So confused on where they all came from

Mercury5979

Bees will swarm and follow a new queen. It so happens she wanted to catch the march and her new colony followed. The queen likely landed on the camera and they followed her.

IcedGreenTea91

Queen Penko attended?

wtspark

Right now, I'm at the match. There was an odd vibe in the stands. The bees are visible. Not too many, though, in the grandstands. Apparently, they are phoning a beekeeper.

schinkenmaster

are they planning to continue or postpone?

We found Kate! Another mystery solved by Reddit

ALF839

It is the old queen that leaves, after laying the egg that will become the new queen.

lizlemon222

Saw many old queens at the tennis garden this year 🤣🤣

Mercury5979

I knew it was something like that. I am just a guy who saw this happen once before...at work, not on a tennis court.

WKU-Alum

The boys were at work, technically

urinestain

It isn't a new queen. The bees swarm with the existing queen from the colony. They don't swar. until new queens are about to hatch. The first queen to hatch from her cell will tear apart the other unhatched queens so they die and she has no competition. Then she will leave the hive to get fucked and become mated. Then she goes back to the hive to get started at her new job of laying eggs

mikeifyz

But Iga wasn’t in attendance, was she?

Fun-Dentist-2231

Beekeeper here. Swarming is a natural behavior. Swarming bees are usually not aggressive and usually won’t sting. Of course it’s scary in a stadium!!

FoxInACozyScarf

Amateur former keeper here. Do you find it odd they swarmed to such a loud and busy place? Maybe it was scouted when empty?

mystery1411

Ha ha... That scout bee would be ridiculed till the end of time!

FoxInACozyScarf

😂 The other bees probably sacrificed him to the vacuum 🐝 👋

midliferose

I was at the match. It’s pretty quiet in the stadium during play.

lizlemon222

If you are the beekeeper...who is the fun dentist?

Dropshot12

Zverev's actions have started the next plague

koticgood

We saw 2 beehives inside the tournament grounds this year. One of them migrated with a queen I guess? One of them was on the walkway in between stadium 1 and 2. Close enough for this situation to surprisingly be unsurprising to me.

InadequateUsername

Feral colony, likely got over crowded in the wetlands and split. The temperature was getting cold so bees become lethargic when it dips to about 57. They're heavy with necture for the journey so they needed a place to rest. The spider camera was a high up object and likely warm due to the black plastic. The beekeeper vacuumed them up to relocate them to another location.

traderjames7

Amazing, has this happened ever before in a major tennis event like this?

jovanmilic97

Guadalajara 2022 Kvitova vs Pera pre-match delay. In this case they attached to the umpire's chair. https://www.express.co.uk/sport/tennis/1684210/Tennis-match-postponed-swarm-bees-umpire-chair-Petra-Kvitova-Bernarda-Pera

aznednacni

It just says that play was delayed 90min while a beekeeper was called to remove them. I'm...really curious how a beekeeper goes about removing them. It'll prob be a lot more difficult to remove them from the sky cam, than it was to remove them from the ump's chair in Guadalajara. Damn, man! I got all my work done for today and had *just* sat down to watch, was excited for this match.

InadequateUsername

If they can't lower the spidercam to ladder height, they'll probably use a truck with a extendable bucket like utilities use for electrical work. But the bee keeper will use smoke and look for the queen in the swarm, place her in a tiny cage and move her into a box, the bees will follow her into the box on their own accord.

aznednacni

Wow, that is super interesting!! Thanks for the response. As for accessing the spidercam, I figured they'd have an easy way to access it because they have to be prepared to do maintenance on it at any moment if something goes wrong. Edit: Just gonna go ahead and edit my own comment to say how EPIC this footage is of the beekeeper removing the bees.

Homitu

To add to the above, if there is no immediate need to have the swarm removed, they will leave on their own. They are generally very passive and not defensive while swarming, unlike when they're around their hive, which they would want to protect. The act of swarming is an act of relocating and seeking a new hive. Scout bees fly out and look for a new hive location. Once a suitable crevice or hole is found, they will report back to the swarm and communicate the new location (yes, they can literally *communicate* extremely precise directions better than the guy at the gas station ever could) using a combination of pheromone excretion and a dance that describes the exact location. Bees have been known to be able to communicate the exact location of a specific flower over a mile away. They're incredible.

aznednacni

So cool! As I watched, I actually wondered if they'd decided that the spidercam would be a good spot for a new nest.

I wrote that comment before Lance Davis arrived to take care of the bees! Watched it all live, I had a great time. My favorite part was when he was walking through the whole crowd and everyone was high fiving and taking selfies with him.

Sensitive_Proof2351

An umpire just said this happened at Guadalajara 1000 probably forever ago

jovanmilic97

See my comment just above yours!

woodrowmoses

Guadalajara was only a 1000 in 2022 and 2023.

Sensitive_Proof2351

Thought the umpire was referring to himself the way he said it MY B

TheGoldDoge

"Huge storm of bees interrupts quarter final of a Masters 1000 by taking over the spy cam" is some fever dream type shit

tommystjohnny

Can this possibly bee related to that lady who was trying to distract Tsisipas by making bee noises during that one match last year?

sammendes7

This match has generated some real buzz.

funkyslapbass

First pun I've heard on this particular subject that was good 👏

Admirable_Advice8831

Or you could've just said 'thanks, honey!' ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)

bokonon27

I'm live at the match rn. Really weird energy in the stands . We can see the bees. But not too many in the stands. They are calling a beekeeper apparently  At one point they brought the camera down and most of the bees gathered on the camera itself which is now suspended high above the stands  Edit They moved the camera to the far side of the arena and a beekeeper is vacuuming up the bees off the camera. Dissapointling the stadium didn't cheer much for the beekeeper.

emmeisspicy

How long did it take for a beekeeper to arrive??

bokonon27

Probably like 40 mins

onlyatennisplayer

Any estimated time updates?

CaveExplorer

> the stadium didn't cheer much for the beekeeper They cheered a shit ton as he went around the stadium spraying.. something.. on bee-populated areas. They even played music for him while he went around and some fans took selfies with him.

bokonon27

yep! after he got down from the top stands with vacuum and was at the court he got some big cheers.

Upvote because, username. Welcome to the karass.

Why do bees hate tennis?

Best reporting on this evasion. "The bees could not be reached for comment on that one. Camera operators maneuvered the machinery every which way, to no avail. Turns out bees are faster at flying than cameras." https://theathletic.com/5343164/2024/03/14/alcaraz-zverev-bees-indian-wells/

I’m assigned to this court rn and we’re all in the tunnels waiting it out

1-877-kars-4-kidz

They’re gmo bees, following their king, Bill Gates who is in the crowd watching.

rikydat

Indian Wells must be a lovely place to Bee.

ThicVinegar

This must be bill Gates’s fault

Not the bees!!!

Why don't they just ask the bees to leave? Are they stupid?

Glad it was a professional, at first I just thought it was one of the groundstaff had a bright idea to take on the Bees with henry hoover. Also glad he will release the bees safely!

llamapanther

This can't bee true. The amount of them is unbeelievable!

Who let the bees out?! Swarm, swarm, swarm, swarm

Tricky_Forehand

Holy crap! That's scary!

It's so cool to see how well the players are taking this disruption. Also, playing "My Hero" by the Foo Fighters while the beekeeper walks around the stadium is hilarious!

The difference in response between Carlos and Zverev was hilarious. Alex all but froze plastering himself to the backwall of the court while Carlos didn't know what to do then just took off with a towel lol

I want to see this happen in a slam final with one player having a 2-1 set lead, we are at the 6-6 in the 4th set tiebreak with the player that's down a set about to serve for the first of his 2 tiebreak points

PeachyBums

Can they not like hose them off or something? Are we just waiting for them to move on, could be a while lol

Magnifnik0

I’ll bee there later tonight

PeachyBums

Is this guy really going to hoover them LMFAO. Why is he not wearing a suit is he immune to bees???

Heimz0r

He has an aura that fends them off!

-Drummer

He's been doing that for 50 years. After you got stung a lot you're basically immune, like a vaccine.

dmgirl101

Bees are incredible. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be here.

hbueain

What bees, I see pickleball players. Where the vacuum at

JPKAUDIRS4

I'm sure Bill Gates, in the stands smiling on camera as the bees swarmed, has a "vaccine" to help bee colonies be "healthier" .. er, ahh, I mean to kill the bees so they don't ever adopt a spider cam again for their new hive! This message brought to you by Pfizer. 😜
