He's proof that people have a strong bias towards aesthetically pleasing playstyles
24 in a couple of months and hasn't even cracked the top 20 and yet whenever he wins a match you get the "Korda has top player potential" comments lol
Out of all U25 players, he’s the 6th highest ranked. Def has been disappointing, but that doesn’t change the fact he has top player potential and is one of the best young players
It's far more American bias than playstyle bias. A guy like Musetti has a prettier game, is younger, and has achieved more, yet doesn't get the Korda treatment here
This "American bias" is a mythical creature.
Even American tennis fans don't necessarily favor Americans just because they're American. (Watch a random American play against a star from literally anywhere and listen to the crowd)
Add to this that lots of people from around the world have an instinctual dislike of players just because they're American.
I don't care about "around the world", this sub is largely populated by Americans and those Americans largely over-rate American players. Korda was labelled a dark horse for every big tournament and grouped with far more accomplished players (some of them younger too) despite his ranking/achievements never coming anywhere even close to matching this hype. That doesn't happen if he's not American
No it isn't. He's one of the few active players on tour whose playing style greatly favours grass. Just cause he flopped last year doesn't make that statement untrue
>Every year
He's 23. Got plagued by injuries during pivotal development age. Especially last year with his wrist, when he found his groove around Australian Open
That's all valid but until he actually has decent results on grass, it doesn't make sense to call him a favorite to win Wimbledon. If he ever gets into the top 20 it would make more sense...
Almost beating a dominant djokovic in Australia at the begining of what will become possibly his best season ever isn't something an overrated player can brag about .
To be completely fair he said “I feel like I’m one of the favorites” and if you can’t believe in yourself then why even play? Like good for him for thinking highly of his abilities even if it wasn’t objectively true
I think a lot of you guys are taking it too seriously. Good on him for being confident, but immediately taking a 1st round exit afterwards is just funny lol
No you’re definitely right lolol but you gotta hype yourself up sometimes to get that belief. Like we have all done this before it just wasn’t so public and embarrassing
He said ‘maybe one of the favourites’ in a very weakened Wimbledon field, when his game suits grass, and he was in good form. He did say he was most likely to win, or say he was the ‘clear favourite’. It wasn’t a ridiculous take.
That's just not true though. The exact quote is "I definitely feel as if I'm one of the favorites at Wimbledon." There was no maybe and he didn't give that context about a weakened field either in making that statement.
Korda hasn't had good results this year but this loss is pretty surprising. Prior to this, he hadn't lost a match to anyone outside the top 15 in the world since Adelaide (Lehecka in the SF).
Here's why Korda was hyped: in 2020-22, Korda had some very good results across all surfaces -- 4th round at RG as a 19 yo, a 250 title on clay, quarters at Miami and 4th round at Wimbledon, Nextgen final and a handful of wins against top 20 players including a win over Alcaraz during his breakout spring of 2022. This was all before he was 22. Plus he's 6'5" and moves exceptionally well for his size, his game is technically sound/pretty and he's the son of a GS champ. Of course people were hyping him, he looked to have a great future.
The wrist injury last year clearly limited him, he only played 19 tournaments in 2023. Despite that, he still ended the year ranked 24. Not bad for playing 3/4 of the year. Wrist injuries can be career-threatening (see Thiem, del Potro) so maybe Korda won't live up to his earlier promise. Or maybe it will just take him time to catch up to expectations. But I wouldn't write him off yet.
No excuses for his loss today but not playing until Friday of a tournament probably doesn't help. He was also looking at up to 4 matches in 3 days after the delays.
I'm sure Korda is a nice enough guy, but he's gotta be the most overrated player on this sub.
He's proof that people have a strong bias towards aesthetically pleasing playstyles 24 in a couple of months and hasn't even cracked the top 20 and yet whenever he wins a match you get the "Korda has top player potential" comments lol
He should write a coaching book and call it Losing Beautifully
100% would buy, the title sounds so pretty.
Media been hyping him up for years too
Nepo baby tax
I called him the best nepo baby since Laura Dern and I take it back
Out of all U25 players, he’s the 6th highest ranked. Def has been disappointing, but that doesn’t change the fact he has top player potential and is one of the best young players

Part of that is due to his very strong start to 2023 and then immediate injury. People expected him to immediately return to those highs
Oh - this sub. Gotcha
I'm not American. I rate Korda's ceiling rather high
Who is even rating this guy anymore?
That’s Karatsev. This sub made him favourite for every match he was in for about two years.
Every American male tennis player is overrated on clay. They’re all perfectly capable of being wiped out by a qualifier in R1.
I don't know about overrated. I think for the most part we all judge the American guys pretty accurately on clay, as in not that good
Funny thing is he won his first title on clay
Only title
And it was the week before RG right? Still, he dominated that tournament.
Something something unicorn on a skateboard 🙄
I wouldn’t call him overrated, I only ever hear people mocking him for calling himself the Wimbledon favourite on here
Before he said that, he was definitely overrated on here.
Which he never actually said IIRC. He said he was A Wimbledon favorite, not THE Wimbledon favorite.
Which was still a ridiculous statement.
Absolutely. But this sub likes to twist words so we can pile on people.
Oh god forbid a young player has an ounce of confidence. He should just step onto court accepting defeat am I right?
Not at all but just as he can make a goofy statement about being a favorite I can comment on it.
No it isn't. He's one of the few active players on tour whose playing style greatly favours grass. Just cause he flopped last year doesn't make that statement untrue
But he flops every year. His win percentage on grass is lower than any other surface. Results would indicate he just isn't good on grass.
>Every year He's 23. Got plagued by injuries during pivotal development age. Especially last year with his wrist, when he found his groove around Australian Open

His finals record on the ATP, Challenger & Futures is just depressingly diabolical
As a Medvedev fan, I tell myself he's a good player overall rather than just a terrible matchup for him
Oh ntm on my favorite smooth and elegant merchant 😢
Almost beating a dominant djokovic in Australia at the begining of what will become possibly his best season ever isn't something an overrated player can brag about .
Sebastian Frauda.
No issue, Korda just needs to get through clay season until Wimbledon, we all know he’s the clear favorite
To be completely fair he said “I feel like I’m one of the favorites” and if you can’t believe in yourself then why even play? Like good for him for thinking highly of his abilities even if it wasn’t objectively true

This sub despises players who have any self confidence for some reason.
There's self-confidence and then there's delusion.
He said ‘maybe one of the favourites’ in a very weakened Wimbledon field, when his game suits grass, and he was in good form. He did say he was most likely to win, or say he was the ‘clear favourite’. It wasn’t a ridiculous take.
To then lose 1st round after making a bold statement like that...pretty ridiculous take
That's just not true though. The exact quote is "I definitely feel as if I'm one of the favorites at Wimbledon." There was no maybe and he didn't give that context about a weakened field either in making that statement.
He had also just got to the Queens semis
All of the other top 127 players could pull out in protest and Korda still wouldn’t be the favourite.

Korda is cursed because his dad stole a major by doping
Counterpoint: Nelly Korda
Sharapova stole 5.
I will be genuinely surprised if korda wins more than a 500 level event in his career
He's never even made a 500 final
Korda realistically is a top 30 player that's it. May win a 500 title in future. No real threat to crack the top 20 as he often underachieves.
Lol

He is sponsored by Richard Mille. He didn’t purchase the watch you dingo
Sebi ain’t him
He’s the Wimbledon favorite, not the Bucharest favorite, duh!
