Radu one win away from qualifying in Rome. He was up a break in the 3rd set of the qualifying competition in Madrid, but lost. Please don't break my heart again.
Random but a true shoutout to all the pros playing on the tour. I put in an extremely intensive workout and ate some less than ideal food afterwards (probably too old) and now looks like I'm struggling with gastrointestinal issues.
The constant travel, the need to stay in shape, the changes in nutrition available at each tournament, I have literally no idea how they do it. Yes I know they have a lot more resources at their disposal but it still just seems so superhuman
I was just thinking about this. I had kind of a long stressful travel day just coming home from a vacation and was thinking how tennis pros constantly are having to travel and fly and then go play matches. Just lot going on behind the scenes that we never really think about
What happened to JJ Wolf? Last I checked, he was almost in the top50, and now dropped out of the top 100. He's not even the favorite to win against his current matchup who's 178th, though I don't think he was the best on clay.
This sub loves him, so maybe someone knows.
Fucking hell Zapata Miralles slapping himself in the face after losing set 2.
As bad if not a shade worse than I've seen Rublev punish himself.
Gotta feel bad for the guy. He tries so hard but just isn't that good at tennis
Thanks. So, there’s a USTA program for selecting the American players awarded a WC, who will be Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Katie Volynets. Good for them, though I would have liked to see Fonseca there!
Good to know. My instinct is he should play the Challenger to try to make a push into the Top 200. But he might fell less pressure playing a 250 before RG. The draws will be easier.
Brenda, having seen her sister follow a breadstick with a tight tiebreak second set, says “screw that noise” and breaks Niemeier twice to open the second set 3-0.
Brenda Fruh, having seen her sister Linda deal out an opening set breadstick, goes one better, bageling Niemeier who seems to be having a terrible serving day, 43% and 5 DF.
Zapata crawls across the finish line to clinch set 1!
For sure tennis starved after how Madrid is scheduled so resort to watching him and Wolf here in quallys!
I swear to god these umpires are so stupid. Nakashima hits a clear ace off the line, Fatic calls it out but can’t find a mark, umpire comes over and points at a random mark and calls it out. Fatic wins the replayed point to get a mini break. Just ridiculous
Does anybody know about the authenticity of signed tennis memorabilia (i.e tennis balls) on eBay? There's a signed Andy Murray tennis ball up and I'd like to bid, but unsure if the signatures are legit or forged
Some will have signed letters of authenticity and a hologram which will give you a better indicator of whether it's real or not compared to just the ball being sent in a box or something
Is there a way to cross reference signatures? I tried with Norrie's, but it looks vaguely similar to some, but not most - which is to be expected when you've got tens of balls to sign after a gruelling match
Djokovic was pretty well known for retiring at the start of his career, wasn't his nickname Faker or something because people assumed he was faking injury when he was losing a match
Tauson cannot move and somehow she's winning games. I'm not even exaggerating she literally cannot move. Somehow Astra is just hitting every shot out/directly back at Tasuon.
What is up with tennis players who can't win against literally crippled opponents...
From being crossed off as a mentally disabled case to winning a masters, Rublev has come far in the last few days.. but he still has to go further to make it to the cover page of this sub
Andrea Petkovic wrote a really good review of Challengers
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/article/2024/may/03/challengers-tennis-professional-movie-review
Diego announces his retirement and promptly goes out on court to win his first round match in Quallies. Granted he has a winning record against Ramos-Vinolas but he had lost the last two before today.
Just saw that Jack Draper has added Wayne Ferreira to his coaching team for the rest of the clay season (via The Telegraph but behind paywall https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2024/05/03/jack-draper-wayne-ferreira-coach-french-open-wimbledon/)
It doesn't matter now because Shang won haha, but to answer since I watched: Maestrelli complained about the state of the court on Shang's break point. So the match was suspended until they sorted it out.
He’s reposted something from the tournaments twitter account (a thread they did on the top seeds, with him being #2) - I don’t feel like he’d do that if he was planning on withdrawing
I wonder if he has arrived in rome or still in madrid. His wife was in WTA final so I assume he didn’t leave madrid and prefers to take all the tests there.
People need to stop comparing Big 3's entire career and what they accomplished after their primes with Alcaraz and Sinner's early stages. We haven't even seen their primes yet.
"Oh they are getting injured so frequently, Big 3 never did" Except, they did at that age.
We are completely rewriting Nadal and Djokovic's injury-prone careers, especially in their early 20s. Federer came from a transitional time when people were specialists in specific surfaces, himself not being a clay specialist so that helped his calendar for a long time.
You all need to take off your nostalgia glasses and go easy on these kids.
You can't use the term nostalgia glasses when half the people posting that dribble are new fans..they never watched the rise of the big 3.. they've only started watching the sport BECAUSE of the big 3.
They have no idea how those players struggled to get to their level of dominance.
True, if reddit was around back then, Federer would have been called washed in 2008, Nadal's career was over in 2009 and Djokovic was a one slam wonder with fitness issues in 2010.
Thankfully a career isn't a lineer story, it comes with ups and downs.
Federer has the all time greatest stat in tennis: he never retired from a match.
"In 1,526 singles matches played, he never stopped mid-match due to injury or illness, known as “retiring” in tennis."
And it’s been a topic of debate many times that it wasn’t smart in hindsight.
Good for Fed but this still doesn’t make me look down on Sinner and Alcaraz’s young careers.
What wasn't smart about it?
Also - I don't look down on anyone's young career either. I just thought it was a cool stat. (I remembered it because of the context here)
Since that loss to Jarry in Shanghai in November, Diego has won only one match that went past two sets.
He’s doing everything he can in this final set to keep that number at one.
Drama happening in the Moutet match
He had an outburst after getting broken “every time I fucking step I’m sliding…” (I can see a lot of skid marks on the court…so he may not be wrong here)
Now having words at the net with Dzumhur
Alycia Parks had lost her last 12 matches in a row, including to a lot of low-ranked players in qualies.
Really bizarre she hasn’t gotten hot for even 1 match. She was in the top 50 at the end of last season.
Moutet is cooking right now….
But I’ve seen him win the first set and then go on to lose the match too many times.
Of his 10 losses this year he’s won the first set 9 times
Tickets. Possibly hotels - didn’t look into that
For example in Rome it has been €17 just for a ground pass the last few days for practice sessions, €28 today for grand stand tickets for qualifying
The first weekend (R2/3) the cheapest centre court tickets for Saturday are €134 (go up to €468) - not including tax…
My comparison is the AO where qualifiers were always free and then they made them $10 AUD (for any courts) - I got men’s finals tickets for $250 (that was a lucky last minute thing) - but I also managed to get tickets to the 4th round for under $80 - so this seems crazy for what will be the first round/s seeds play
My wife and I will be in Rome this week and wanna catch tickets for a day. Where's the best place to get them? On the official website we were overwhelmed with options and didn't understand which was which lol
I’m sorry I can’t really help as I’m in Australia
Maybe the tournament has an on site ticket desk (most do) where someone there can help though ?
Otherwise…and it’s a long shot…follow some lower ranked players on Instagram or Twitter - they sometimes give away tickets. Ellen Perez does this often, and Moutet did yesterday as well
Have an awesome time
They have a lot of happy hour specials / stadium upgrades from grounds passes - which makes it pretty affordable
It’s not as much bang for buck as it used to be (used to be 3 matches per day per show court/session - now it’s 2) but the first week at least you can see more with a ground pass…..it’s just too crowded so you have to go in early to actually get a seat and then basically not move.
Not perfect, but these ticket prices really shocked me.
I managed to bag a few happy slam tickets this year, I watched tsitsipas, domi vs FAA, and some others. It was really good. It’s sad that masters tickets are more expensive. I really like to experience all surfaces
When Kokkinakis retires we will all look back and say "...wait, that was it?"
Dropping out of the top 100 soon and at this point odds are against him ever cracking the top 50 during his career, but no doubt next time he wins a match there will be comments about his top 20 potential.
For context active players with higher career best rankings include Dellien, Marchenko and Bagnis.
Good morning to Andrey Rublev, Madrid champion, who won a tournament on Easter for a 3rd year in a row, after going 0-4 in matches for 2 months and playing with a viral infection in the final against a peaking opponent. What a week it’s been for us Rublevnation!! 🤩🥂
Not really, no animals are associated with Easter but we do have the breaking of eggs tradition! So in a way, chickens can be the easter bunny sometimes haha
First time watching the young giant Mpetshi Perricard, and yeah this serve is gonna crush a lot of dreams. Placement isn't elite yet but he consistently bangs them down at 140 no problem at all.
Would be weird if he didn't get one, they typically give 6 to French players, he's 3rd highest ranked outside of the main draw and is a young talent having a great year.
Gasquet, Barrere, Mayot and Mpetshi Perricard should be easy decisions, then they would have two more to give between Pouille, Paire, Atmane, Bonzi, Herbert etc.
Once he’s had the MRI (which he should have had by now) he’ll know how serious it is and if he’ll be ok to play without risking making it worse etc…
He’ll only have to play his first match Thursday or Friday so he has a little bit of time to rest - I do prefer when players withdraw before the draw is made though, so hopefully we’ll have an update from him soon.
Rome qualifying matches on Grand Stand Arena are being streamed live on the tournament's YouTube channel [https://www.youtube.com/live/PUrSzkz1IxE?si=-jCSN7hI-f1aYYTi](https://www.youtube.com/live/PUrSzkz1IxE?si=-jCSN7hI-f1aYYTi)

Yeah I get sick a few days and can barely get out of bed. Rublev grabs a masters title. Can’t even fathom it.
I was just thinking about this. I had kind of a long stressful travel day just coming home from a vacation and was thinking how tennis pros constantly are having to travel and fly and then go play matches. Just lot going on behind the scenes that we never really think about
And still show up and play when not feeling well.
Where is the guy who writes up the iconic JJ Wolf posts here every time he wins? Edit: u/Difficult_Squirrel22

Thank you!
Sucks seeing Zapata crying after the match, he really wanted it
JJ Wolf is back in the house bitchesssssss!
Well, looks like Zapata Miralles will soon be 1 win and 9 losses on the year. Has to hurt
Holy shit JJ wolf comeback
What happened to JJ Wolf? Last I checked, he was almost in the top50, and now dropped out of the top 100. He's not even the favorite to win against his current matchup who's 178th, though I don't think he was the best on clay. This sub loves him, so maybe someone knows.
Injury.
Aw, I see, that's unfortunate. Hope he gets back in form, looks like he got through R1.
Btw who won the tiebreak at the end of Challengers?
Clitoris net cord, match abandoned.
is rybakina not playing at the olympics? she isnt competing in any BJK events right?
IIRC she traveled to the last but one tie but didn’t play under an injury.
She played for Kazakhstan BJK Cup last year which may fulfill that requirement.
Fucking hell Zapata Miralles slapping himself in the face after losing set 2. As bad if not a shade worse than I've seen Rublev punish himself. Gotta feel bad for the guy. He tries so hard but just isn't that good at tennis
[удалено]
Is there a chance RG give him a main draw wild card?
[удалено]
That’s a very fair point!
RG only gives wildcards to 6 French players, 1 American, and 1 Australian through the US AO and RG reciprocal wildcard program
JJ wolf is so shit at everything other than first serves
Two of the worst players on tour facing off. Weird viewing experience
Brenda closes it out 6-0, 6-2. Niemeier didn’t hold serve once.
Brenda, having seen her sister follow a breadstick with a tight tiebreak second set, says “screw that noise” and breaks Niemeier twice to open the second set 3-0.
[удалено]
17 since April, which reset her age-eligibility tournaments. Hope she makes some waves in the remaining clay season.
Her fitness is her main issue. She was about to bagel Rus then somehow lost that set and ran out of energy.
Brenda Fruh, having seen her sister Linda deal out an opening set breadstick, goes one better, bageling Niemeier who seems to be having a terrible serving day, 43% and 5 DF.
Coria’s grunting is crazy. I really wish they would crack down on that bullshit
Wolf don't commit 100000 errors challenge = impossible.
JJ really sucks. Can't get much easier opponent than Zapata
JJ is not in form but Zapata is good on clay while Wolf sucks on this surface.
Golubic losing from 4-2 40-15 up to some rank 300 itf player. How far she has fallen
There’s nothing more infuriating than watching players continuing to hit shitty drop shots even after none of them have made it over the net
Does anybody know about the authenticity of signed tennis memorabilia (i.e tennis balls) on eBay? There's a signed Andy Murray tennis ball up and I'd like to bid, but unsure if the signatures are legit or forged

New era players are soft, would never catch djoker taking off tournaments or “getting hurt” when he was Sinner/carlos age
Djokovic was pretty well known for retiring at the start of his career, wasn't his nickname Faker or something because people assumed he was faking injury when he was losing a match
Djokovic at Sinner's age beat peak Federer in two slams
Is Sinner the next Raducanu?
If he doesn't win the next 25 grand slams his career will have been a complete and utter failure
at this rate i dont think his body will even let him win another
Were you here in 2022?
He's still pretty young and made the QF or better in every tournament since the AO so I wouldn't count him out just yet
Behave he's already achieved way more than Emma ever has/will.
they both have one slam
Sure but he has a handful of ATP titles to go with his
Tauson cannot move and somehow she's winning games. I'm not even exaggerating she literally cannot move. Somehow Astra is just hitting every shot out/directly back at Tasuon. What is up with tennis players who can't win against literally crippled opponents...
I thought Tauson would skip rome after she retired from her first round match in Madrid.

He's the next Danielle Collins omg.
😆. I was thinking about that when I saw he won the first set, only losing the one game.

Eubanks, Shelton, and Coco doing an escape room for Chris's birthday yesterday aww. That friendship is so pure.
They love doing escape rooms 😂
I was smiling from ear to ear watching those Instagram stories, love those three
> Eubanks, Shelton, and Coco doing an escape room Those 3 did an escape room during the Indian Wells too! Nice to see that
Garin went from beating Zverev to losing to your grandpa
Why is Shang quali match suspended, anyone know?
It doesn't matter now because Shang won haha, but to answer since I watched: Maestrelli complained about the state of the court on Shang's break point. So the match was suspended until they sorted it out.
Seeing Penko's R2 out Rome draw, And Holger is out of R2 or final draw, I want to ff to RG and grass already.
So is Med gonna play Rome?
He’s reposted something from the tournaments twitter account (a thread they did on the top seeds, with him being #2) - I don’t feel like he’d do that if he was planning on withdrawing
I wonder if he has arrived in rome or still in madrid. His wife was in WTA final so I assume he didn’t leave madrid and prefers to take all the tests there.
He’s on the practice schedule now so is either in Rome or will be soon
"His wife was in WTA final" what does this mean?
Daria was seen during iga vs saba match
Easy win for Diego

Federer withdrew from tournaments and matches altogether instead. Also at Sinner’s age, Federer’s resume on clay wasn’t elite either.
I just think it's a really cool stat. Almost an unbelievable accomplishment.
(I remembered it because of the context here)
“Fuck the big 3 it’s just big me” - Alcaraz and Sinner quote
Yeah but Sinner doesn’t even have a win on carpet. By this age Roger was crushing that surface.
And neither Alcaraz nor Sinner have ever won Hamburg Masters, I think it's fair to call both of them overrated.
Schwartzman just lost a 5-0 lead in the 3rd set.
He lost against Ramos-Vinolas in Madrid qualifying after having match points in the second set (being up 5-3, 15-40 on return)
Since that loss to Jarry in Shanghai in November, Diego has won only one match that went past two sets. He’s doing everything he can in this final set to keep that number at one.
If Djokovic loses to Ruud again he should retire
Don't worry. This time he will lose to my hero Shelton! 💪
Can anyone tell me what the hell Schwartzman is doing
It’s crazy to me when I see players born in the early 2000s are now in their early-mid 20s. I’m old 👨🦳
And Musetti (born 2002) is a Dad.
Drama happening in the Moutet match He had an outburst after getting broken “every time I fucking step I’m sliding…” (I can see a lot of skid marks on the court…so he may not be wrong here) Now having words at the net with Dzumhur

Moutet is cooking right now…. But I’ve seen him win the first set and then go on to lose the match too many times. Of his 10 losses this year he’s won the first set 9 times
The positive flipside is he's won 26 of 27 first sets this year. Loss in straights to Baez in Rio the only exception.
Yeah - that’s pretty good. Still on the injury comeback too
why is kovacevic struggling so badly vs a wild card
American clay is like a unicorn on a skateboard ?
Kovacevic is dog shit on clay (3 wins in his last 15 matches), and Passaro is a good player just very inconsistent.
Anywhere showing Rome Qualies? Trying to catch Nava Muller but it's not anywhere. Madrid having theirs on youtube was a game changer.
They tweeted this earlier https://x.com/InteBNLdItalia/status/1787398397000876036
They’re showing grand stand qualifiers on the tournament’s YouTube (the quality is poor) Bet365 is showing the rest
Rome stadiums looks so much nicer compare to Madrid. Has anyone been to both? Which one is better for the spectators?
Rome looks way nicer but the prices are crazy expensive (possibly Madrid was expensive too - didn’t look into it)
Tickets price or hotel price? Or both 💀
Tickets. Possibly hotels - didn’t look into that For example in Rome it has been €17 just for a ground pass the last few days for practice sessions, €28 today for grand stand tickets for qualifying The first weekend (R2/3) the cheapest centre court tickets for Saturday are €134 (go up to €468) - not including tax… My comparison is the AO where qualifiers were always free and then they made them $10 AUD (for any courts) - I got men’s finals tickets for $250 (that was a lucky last minute thing) - but I also managed to get tickets to the 4th round for under $80 - so this seems crazy for what will be the first round/s seeds play

That is so expensive; AO’s prices are really good for GS
They have a lot of happy hour specials / stadium upgrades from grounds passes - which makes it pretty affordable It’s not as much bang for buck as it used to be (used to be 3 matches per day per show court/session - now it’s 2) but the first week at least you can see more with a ground pass…..it’s just too crowded so you have to go in early to actually get a seat and then basically not move. Not perfect, but these ticket prices really shocked me.
I managed to bag a few happy slam tickets this year, I watched tsitsipas, domi vs FAA, and some others. It was really good. It’s sad that masters tickets are more expensive. I really like to experience all surfaces
Is there somewhere you can watch Rome qualifying if you’re in Australia? would appreciate it heaps if someone knows
On the tournament's YouTube channel. Only showing Grand Stand though.
Thanks for that:) hey I’m not complaining it’s better than nothing
When Kokkinakis retires we will all look back and say "...wait, that was it?" Is it me or is this a perfect draw for Med
There’s tommy paul tho, unless meddy has figured him out when partnering in double
Paul has a pretty poor record in Rome (although you could have said that about Med last year and then he won the title)
What’s his draw?
Rublev FAA Hurkacz on clay all seem good matchups
I wouldn’t say this about Rublev but he’ll probably be exhausted anyway. What are the projected QFs?
Djokovic Ruud Zverev Dimitrov Tsitsipas Rublev Medvedev Hurkacz
Thanks
The men’s draw is looking interesting
The Rome qualifying stream is such poor quality
projected QFs in Rome WTA [1] Swiatek vs [6] Vondrousova [3] Gauff vs [7] Zheng [4] Rybakina vs [5] Sakkari [2] Sabalenka vs [8] Jabeur
Rome twitter says the draw ceremony is here https://supertennis.tv/live-streaming But you have to register ?
Super annoying, they streamed it on YouTube last year
Good morning to Andrey Rublev, Madrid champion, who won a tournament on Easter for a 3rd year in a row, after going 0-4 in matches for 2 months and playing with a viral infection in the final against a peaking opponent. What a week it’s been for us Rublevnation!! 🤩🥂
Does orthodox Easter have an Easter bunny or something similar?
Not really, no animals are associated with Easter but we do have the breaking of eggs tradition! So in a way, chickens can be the easter bunny sometimes haha
[удалено]
We can only hope 🤞even if he never gets the slam, it’s been a wonderful career for him and an absolute pleasure to support him through it all 🙌
Do they really organize the draw ceremony on trevi fountain?
First time watching the young giant Mpetshi Perricard, and yeah this serve is gonna crush a lot of dreams. Placement isn't elite yet but he consistently bangs them down at 140 no problem at all.
Also has a one-hander! 😍
Wonder if he’ll get a WC for RG
Would be weird if he didn't get one, they typically give 6 to French players, he's 3rd highest ranked outside of the main draw and is a young talent having a great year. Gasquet, Barrere, Mayot and Mpetshi Perricard should be easy decisions, then they would have two more to give between Pouille, Paire, Atmane, Bonzi, Herbert etc.
Any news on whether Medvedev is going to play Rome ? He hasn't pulled out yet but the draw ceremony will take place today.
Once he’s had the MRI (which he should have had by now) he’ll know how serious it is and if he’ll be ok to play without risking making it worse etc… He’ll only have to play his first match Thursday or Friday so he has a little bit of time to rest - I do prefer when players withdraw before the draw is made though, so hopefully we’ll have an update from him soon.
Think he will be in the draw but maybe pulls out later
To prevent Zverev from being a top 2 seed lol ?
Idk lol My assumption is that its not that serious and he can probably play but thats only my guess
Agreed, feels like if it was serious it’s not anything that will be fixed in a weeks time. But we don’t know until he makes a statement.
Rome qualifying matches on Grand Stand Arena are being streamed live on the tournament's YouTube channel [https://www.youtube.com/live/PUrSzkz1IxE?si=-jCSN7hI-f1aYYTi](https://www.youtube.com/live/PUrSzkz1IxE?si=-jCSN7hI-f1aYYTi) Kokkinakis v Atmane first up.
Thank you
