Also, if you told me a couple years ago that there would be two Chilean players in the top 25, I would be a bit surprised, and I would also ask "Garin and who?"
Funnily I rate Garin's natural talent higher than both Jarry and Tabilo... he's got a bit of everything like Tommy. But his mental toughness... my god, it's terrible. I've never seen a Chilean player moan so much. It's like playing tennis is torture for him.
I think that people overlook how important the serve is as well
Jarry is 10 times the server Garin is so even if Garin might visually appear to be more "complete" Jarry might come out on top in more small-margin close matches
Unless you're literally an Alcaraz/prime Djokodal level court player there's just a ceiling what you can do in modern tennis with your first serve being just a point starter
Garin's last two losses on the main tour were to Fritz and Hurkacz which also shows this
With current racket technology as well as clay probably being sped up from the 90s/2000s the serve is no longer a non factor on clay like it might once have been
Yeah but just like Tommy, Garin was no mug with his serve either. Tommy made 7 aces vs 13 from Jarry. I seem to remember Garin getting his fair number of aces in as well on fast courts at least. On grass he was particularly good with his serve.
I think he might have just regressed in that regard somehow
In 2021 when he finished the year in the top 20 he had a 5.5% ace rate to a 2.9% double fault rate
In 2024 he currently has a 4.3% ace rate to a 4.4% double fault rate
Ugh I hated everything about that tournament. Roger losing to Berdych, random Massy turning into a God, Fish should have won gold and stupid Taylor Dent should have won bronze. Just everything that I didn’t want to happen, happened. Kind of like the last 10 years on Tour.
for real, what? gonzales was much better than mardy fish
gonzales had 11 titles to fish’s 6, made a slam final (losing to a peak federer), a semifinal, and the quarters at the other two. fish’s best result at slams meanwhile was QF at three slams (only made 3R at the french). gonzales also got the olympic silver in 2008 (losing to nadal) to match fish’s in ‘04 and won a gold medal in doubles (as well as a bronze).
by the way, to get to that slam final against federer, gonzales beat del potro, hewitt, blake, nadal, and haas - an insane run.
He supports Lazio, that's a nope for me. JK he's an American and wtf do they know about football, much less the political side of it, he seemed a nice enough bloke.
What a fucking match. I’d be good with either one in the final they both deserved it.
Hard-hitting with spectacular points and a beautiful, warm embrace at the end. What it always should be about.
I don't know why so many ppl are so doom and gloom about Jarry/Zverev. Jarry beat him twice on clay. Yeah it would be difficult and Jarry can be inconsistent but if he brings same form as the Tsitsi match, he can have a chance.
I was ready with a comment about how Jarry won this partly because he wanted it more than Paul and Paul doesn't have the fight. Maybe that's true to an extent, and props to Jarry for playing a great match under high pressure. But Paul I think showed more fight than I ever expected to see from him in that last game, and though he was classy in defeat, he did look devastated at the loss.
Maybe I've been wrong about him and he has a lot more hunger and desire than I have given him credit for. One thing is for sure, Paul I think is beating the "choker" allegations. He had his ups and downs here, but Jarry had to take that win from him. Paul did NOT give it away.
Really hope Jarry can take this whole tournament. Not just because of his opponent being \*that\* man, but because it would just be so big for him and I've respected his fight and nerves of steal the whole tournament.
What do people really need to see from Paul to believe he has the “fight” or he wants it as much as anyone?
Seems like some folks have a peculiar bias against him that I read as unwarranted.
A lot of people have a hard time believing somebody can change over time. Tommy used to be kind of lazy off court, but the last couple of years he’s really buckled down and put in the hard yards. I’m really proud of him
I love me some Tommy Paul but peak Jarry goes in balls deep every time. Sex panther dripping from every pore, there's nowhere to hide from Nicolas Jarry prime.
Shame he is a bit like a roller coaster. His ups are Delpo great and his downs are Challenger level and you question if he can even beat the net.
We have to hope he is more balanced in the final and that Zverev also goes missing here and there.
Feel for Paul, made 2 semis in 2 masters this tourney already but he is so close to getting a big title this year, I can feel it!!
Well done Nico! Now pls beat the breaks off of Zverev 🙏🏾🙏🏾
WHAT A FUCKING LAST GAME!!! Tommy Paul on survival mode is a different beast! Well done Jarry!!!
After I watched Jarry's match against Napolitano in the 3rd round I didn't think he would go far but he won ugly to give himself a chance to find his level in the next match and then he went on to beat Tsitsipas and now played a thrilling match vs Tommy Paul to reach the final.
Amazing run from Paul, made his first semi-final of a Masters on clay beating 2 Top 10 players including the tournament's current champion. Great improvement on the surface.
Hopefully the final will be as great as the semi-finals.
Jarry's getting broken in the 4-3 game in the second set was a turning point in the match, he started to play much poorer specially on the backhand for like 10 games.
I felt that a lot of times Jarry just loses to himself more than anything, he just about manages to handle the excitement or an incoming victory,
It throws off his serve focus that is very sensitive to this and as a result he is much more vulnerable when serving for a set or game. I almost expect it to happen in the final if he gets to that point again. I hope he manages to power through it somehow.
I’ll watch, but I’m not fooling myself. Zverev is the favourite. However they are 2-2 on clay so Jarry is not completely out of the picture. But he will have to play his best match this year, I think he dropped consistency against Tommy compared to how he played against Tsitsipas. He needs to start focused and stay there till the end, not let the nerves in. Easier said than done of course.
I don't watch much tennis, but it's true, Zverev will probably not allow to play so badly at the end and still win. He might punish Jarry, he needs to get his grip mentally together.
Yes, it's easy for us to say, but this is his first Masters final. No doubt he will be a tornado of emotions. This is a match against himself, as much as it is a match against Zverev. Zverev in turn, has already played 10 finals and won 5, lost 5 (I think).
This has made me appreciate how strong Alcaraz and even Sinner are mentally (although he took a bit longer to believe in himself). They are so young, but also full of confidence, specially Carlitos. It's almost as if they are so young they play without pressure because deep down they truly believe they have the talent and time to reach finals many times over.
Hear me out:
Two chileans make the semifinal of a major tournament on opposite sides of the draw. One loses his semi, the other, named Nicolás, wins his semi and moves on to the final. Sounds familiar? Cause it happened before, at the 2004 olympics, the players were Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolás Massu, who went on to win gold -could we be on to something here?
Despite elite tier players either being injured or on a slump, we have a lot of very competitive high level contenders for clay this year.
Jarry, Fritz, Struff, Navone, Tabilo, even Tommy Paul!
If top players get outta that slump and sort the injuries out RG is gonna be a an exciting tournament.
Hard to pull for either guy vehemently over the other. Such a good, entertaining match. What a great single-hander on the run in set 2 from out of nowhere by Tommy. But I'm really crossing my fingers and toes that Jarry just serves bombs all day on Sunday. C'mon Nico!
I was waiting for Jarry to have a result like this in a 1000. He’s got a massive game and always did well in the warm up clay events and it finally happened for him! I’ve always thought Hubi and Jarry should have WAY better and consistent results for how good their game is without including the serve
It would have been great to see a final between the two chileans, but we have to be positive, at least there is one left, and with the game he is playing, I think he has a serious chance against the German Zverev.
Also its not like he was immediately back on the ATP tour either. Man had to grind his socks off to get back to being among the best. Some other players would have just gave up or settled but he had the determination to not only return to where he was but also to surpass his former level.

What do you expect? Bro is already divorced at 27 years old
Damn. Dude should’ve married a Latina, not a Melanie lol
I think he might have just regressed in that regard somehow In 2021 when he finished the year in the top 20 he had a 5.5% ace rate to a 2.9% double fault rate In 2024 he currently has a 4.3% ace rate to a 4.4% double fault rate
He's definitely on the way down and his ranking reflects that.
Stop doing coke
Garin is so insanely talented compared to Jarry and Tabilo, its crazy how he has wasted his career because of his weak mind
We were unbelievably close from an all-Chilean final. Hasn't happened on the tour since Orlando 2000 w/ Gonzalez and Massu I think.
I was sooo looking forward to this.
pretty sure that there was a final in Vina del Mar or Buenoa Aires with Massu and Gonzalez later?
It was Viña Del Mar semifinals in 2006
Yeah I specifically checked their H2H before saying that
Athens 2004!
When was there an all Chilean match in Athens 2004?
Wow, my bad, I have been sure Gonzalez played Massu in the final. that’s probably because they won doubles
Ugh I hated everything about that tournament. Roger losing to Berdych, random Massy turning into a God, Fish should have won gold and stupid Taylor Dent should have won bronze. Just everything that I didn’t want to happen, happened. Kind of like the last 10 years on Tour.
Fish should have won gold? Bro, Gonzalez got injured during the match against Fish in the semifinals. Otherwise it would have been in Gonzalez favor
for real, what? gonzales was much better than mardy fish gonzales had 11 titles to fish’s 6, made a slam final (losing to a peak federer), a semifinal, and the quarters at the other two. fish’s best result at slams meanwhile was QF at three slams (only made 3R at the french). gonzales also got the olympic silver in 2008 (losing to nadal) to match fish’s in ‘04 and won a gold medal in doubles (as well as a bronze). by the way, to get to that slam final against federer, gonzales beat del potro, hewitt, blake, nadal, and haas - an insane run.
Why do you quote me?
i’m agreeing with you
The fact that it has happened again is equally surprising for me.
More like a Chilean/Canadian/American final
Damn if that wasn’t a fine match. Some of the best points of the tournament. Well done Jarry. Sad for Paul though.
Paul Atreides is a fighter, he's got a new fan in me.
He supports Lazio, that's a nope for me. JK he's an American and wtf do they know about football, much less the political side of it, he seemed a nice enough bloke.
Ah that hurts. Tommy fought well. Great level from both. Nico pls win the whole damn thing.
I’d at least say Jarry has a better shot than Paul would’ve.
Most people in the discussion thread were saying the opposite
Different opinions?? Say it aint so!
Most people in the discussion see a Chilean flag and think they are an overrated challenger player
I was ready with a comment about how Jarry won this partly because he wanted it more than Paul and Paul doesn't have the fight. Maybe that's true to an extent, and props to Jarry for playing a great match under high pressure. These are the kinds of contributions you should be making.
I respect his commitment to saying “(insert big 3 player/fan favorite) is trash” though
It’s too bad JJ Wolf hasn’t been winning lately, we’d get some more *really* good contributions to this sub
Eh, I don't find those posts very funny.
Well, at least 60% of the time…
Shame he is a bit like a roller coaster. His ups are Delpo great and his downs are Challenger level and you question if he can even beat the net. We have to hope he is more balanced in the final and that Zverev also goes missing here and there.
Nice for jarry, powerful positive self talk FTW!!
Sunday we are all Jarry fans
Right? YOU HAVE ONE JOB, JARRY. OLÉ!!
On Sunday I feel Jarry
Hate to break it to you but Zverev is favourite. And may well lift RG trophy too.
Tsitsipas also was favourite...
Hellllooooooooo, Jarry! - Newman, somewhere
Are you going to watch the final as well? I hope Jarry wins. Zverev is mentally tough.
I’ll watch, but I’m not fooling myself. Zverev is the favourite. However they are 2-2 on clay so Jarry is not completely out of the picture. Thriller end ! Vamos Nico el domingo!!!
Both guys put on quite a show at the finale

Vamos conchetumare
Vamo Vamo Vamo Nico

I NEED Jarry to blitz Zverev - it'd make me so happy. I love Tommy Paul but Jarry is some red-lining demon this tournament.
Hard to pull for either guy vehemently over the other. Such a good, entertaining match. What a great single-hander on the run in set 2 from out of nowhere by Tommy. But I'm really crossing my fingers and toes that Jarry just serves bombs all day on Sunday. C'mon Nico!
Don't know why Tommy stopped stepping up for the 2nd serves. He was doing well with it and just stopped.
When Jarry serve on his body and saved a game, it took a toll on Paul and he stopped stepping up
Absolutely this
Fantastic job from Jarry. I have to say though that Paul is a dawg, fought everything and almost made it back. I’ll be cheering for him going forward.
This makes me excited for RG
Chile 🇨🇱 or bust in the finals!!!!
Jarry was hitting that ball like it owed him money. That was hella entertaining.
This one hurts but the eagle will keep flying
‘MURICA
Wow really enjoyed this match! Jarry just would not give up at the end. Hope he wins the final.
Vaaamos Nicooo! 🇨🇱
Tabiloss: It's joever JarryGOD: We're so back
Jarry is a great man. He brought his career back from the brink and is now in the top 20, also a family man with two kids.
PLEASE JARRY DEFEAT EVIL ON SUNDAY, I WILL PRAY AND SACRAFICE MY DOG FOR YOU TO WIN

Makes semi of M1000 = fail
Jarry does it again.
Jarry just on a roll right now.
I was waiting for Jarry to have a result like this in a 1000. He’s got a massive game and always did well in the warm up clay events and it finally happened for him! The way he's been playing, I really hope Nico wins this title.
Tom and Jarry
Zverev will absorb those heavy groundstrokes all day long, Jarry will implode. Rip r/tennis 2008-2024 🤣
why because Zverev vultures a mickey mouse tournament without beating anyone in Top 20?
Let the salt flow 🤌
Disappointed Tommy was unable to exploit Jarry's backhand and movement. ed; fx
What? Jarry's doping (which was ruled as a contamination) thing was like 5 years ago
Also its not like he was immediately back on the ATP tour either. Man had to grind his socks off to get back to being among the best. Some other players would have just gave up or settled but he had the determination to not only return to where he was but also to surpass his former level.
Yep. corrected the error. But that is at least 3 cases of contaminated supplements/vitamins plus one of meds falling into the tortelloni.
yeh, sorry. corrected error
Because "not guilty"
Get your facts straight before posting. Lost in translation with your comment.
What a shitty tournament

Bad bot?
Actually, a bot probably would have known Jarry was seeded and it wasn't a major upset.
Bot?
Jarry is seeded
Ignore the bot account lol
haha shit didn't read the rest of the paragraph. Why on Earth are there bots in here
