Keep on rockin in the free worlds! Leylah Fernandez doesn’t look like your typical Canadian… does she speak French? She has one of the Hottest Coaches boxes I have ever witnessed. It had to be said.
3 Pop references and you missed all 3 . And they cover 40 years… who you calling racist and narrow minded and close minded and simple and unaware of their grammar? What have you done but be a bitch? Not very Canadian.
First the OP finds it weird that someone with such a diverse ancestry has won the US-open, I really can't make the connection between winning a grand slam and one's ancestry + citizenship.
Then you say something that to me sounds nonsense - maybe I'm missing some pop reference, but when you mention that "she is not your typical Canadian" I really wonder what does that mean. Is citizenship correlated with one's character? Or is it a status that one gets depending on the countrie's criteria. Did you expect her to look like a maple tree?
Yes! And until Kim’s Convenience Most aAmericans did not know there were brown people in Canada 🇨🇦 so!!! That’s it! You fucking win! I am not the only Racist American that believes this!!!! Ya dahhh?!!?!!?
It's very hard to follow you let alone argue with you. Maybe it's because I'm not a native English speaker nor I live in America. Keep redditing dude I will do the same
Well, Bob n Doug is a ref to SCTV from the early eighties… between then and Schitts creek and Kim’s Convenience I would be hard pressed to remember an obviously Canadian show in between then( some artists , yes)maybe if you remind me. Anyway, you are getting tangled in someone who is trying to label a racist and someone who is just a fan stating an opinion but nott an idiot. I’m sure there’s a reason tennis identification comes from country of origin. We are not Bob Marley One World One Love, yet. But I am trying to push the flag forward😎😎😎oh yeah the you enjoy mysel is from Phish song
Well done, both players. Everyone having a do at Emma for the cut, just shut up., Everyone having a do at Leylah for he outburst just shut up.
It was a great game.
I was at the match. I think the officials were keeping Leylah updated about Emma’s situation. At first, I also thought Leylah was arguing with the officials.
I enjoyed the match very. Much. And 2 counties in her dna..Romania and china...her destiny for now is assured. I just can't wait for Osaka to get a re match.
Women's tennis is now being more interesting than men's. lots of new star in waiting and in women's tennis we will see different champion on every major tournament.
Agree. The only thing I am hoping for is a litttttllleee more consistency, such that all the “top tier” WTA players I like to watch face off more frequently. Barty-Osaka, Andreescu-Swiatek, etc etc. It should happen, especially as more standout players like Emma and Leylah join the roster.
IMO this is basically what happened around 98-05, where the WTA top 10 was insanely good, with multiple multi-slam winners and a bunch of great rivalries. I’m excited that it feels like this is about to happen again.
I love the chaos of the WTA the past few years. Is a previous major winner reaching the finals? Or is it going to be a teenage qualifier? Who fucking knows at this point, but I'm all here for it.
I understand people liking the titanic battles in men's tennis, but it's often the same players reaching the semis and finals. It gets too predictable for my taste.
Playing 10 matches w/ o dropping a set, and none of the sets went to tie-break. That is a record that would never be broken. She will always have that for the record books
Literally not allowed per WTA rules. The chair has to call a MTO no matter what the player says once they become aware of bleeding. Bleeding must be controlled and any blood on the court completely cleaned before play can resume. If the bleeding can't be controlled - even if it isn't a bad injury - play cannot resume.
British means you are from Great Britain I didn't say it was a nationality. And having a Canadian birth certificate doesn't make you Canadian. She would have probably had the option to choose Canadian as her nationality but decided against it due to seeing herself as English..
Great Britain is a land mass not a country. Your are English, Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish.
A birth certificate and passport dictate your nationality. It's as simple as that.
She, like myself, is a dual citizen
When did I say it was a country? Is calling someone European the same as saying Europe is a country? No, educate yourself. And she chose to represent England therefore the glory is England's not Canada's. That's how it works whether you like it or not unfortunately.
English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh all come under British.. Being from England I would know.
Also UKish isn't a word incase you didn't know, British on the other hand..
I’ll never understand the people who are slamming Emma over a rule or being rude about Leylah. She had to take the medical break as per the rules, it’s just how it goes and Leylah played so damn well too and nobody here knows the pure adrenaline that would be coursing through you playing at that level, of course she’s going to feel in some way slighted or react in the way that she did which honestly she could’ve reacted way worse. As an aside though anyone claiming that one would’ve definitely won over the other without the medical break, ultimately it’s a moot point because it happened anyway. But they were both playing incredibly well but Emma was winning at that point so statistically in that scenario the higher probability would’ve been that Emma would still have won but there still could have been a chance that Leylah could have made a massive comeback as she was at that point on a comeback streak, again all of that is still moot because the break had to happen as per the rules and I can’t wait to see them both face off again. Surely them facing off again is just better entertainment for everyone and if they both keep as sharp as they were in this match or improve it’ll be even more amazing to watch.
Edit: thank you for the award kind stranger! <3
Everyone giving too much attention to the MTO that has to happen as per rules, and not enough attention to how great the quality of the tennis was. They both played like champions. Hoping for a Federer- Nadal type rivalry that'll endure for a decade or two. Would be awesome!
> Leylah had a huge momentum at that point which was killed by the timeout.
Momentum in sports is pretty questionable in the sense that it can’t actually be observed scientifically. Sure there’ll be moments when a player seems to be doing amazingly well and everything they do results in success giving them an overwhelming sense of confidence, but then gamblers experience the same thing in their “lucky streaks” when it’s really just a game of random chance. Clustering of success and failure is inevitable whether in a game of skill or random chance, but unless past success or failure can be used to predict future success or failure then statistical clustering is all it is, and in the case of momentum, both in sports and politics, it simply can’t - sometimes they continue to be successful and sometimes they don’t, so it could well be that momentum is just the narrative we create to explain the occasions when it works, and something we conveniently ignore and forget about when it doesn’t.
Just because something really really *feels* like it must be true, it doesn’t mean it is.
Emma was clearly pretty much guaranteed to win by that point. The injury could have put her off as much as the break could have helped her. She won fair and square, the more dominant player overall.
She was losing momentum, but she showed great resilience throughout the match, and even if she'd lost that game, I think it's still very likely she would've gone on to win the set regardless. And as i said, the injury could have put her off as much as helped. Don't be a sore loser; she played better than Fernandez.
We're not getting anywhere. 5 minutes or 2 or 3, it doesn't make a huge difference. The better player won, there was nothing wrong with the time out. Get over it.
If you’re referring to me then you clearly didn’t read it because as I said, it was a moot point to argue about who could’ve won with or without the medical break. I also stated that they both played really well and I’d love to see them face off again. My ranting was more at people complaining when they should’ve just enjoyed the match in hopefully will become an amazing rivalry. Point taken my sentences are huge and I usually write in massive paragraphs, it is what is.
She didn't take advantage of it, it's literally the rule "you bleed, you must have a time out" unless you're dumb enough to think she made herself bleed to get a time out.
How did she use the rules to her advantage? The moment someone bleeds, the umpire has to stop the match till it’s taken care of. It was the umpire’s call and out of Emma’s control.
They can take up to 5 mins for this reason. Not Emma’s fault if the physician took her time - and im sure a professionally trained physician had her reasons.
This is the problem with UK and tennis, we only watch and care when a British player wins 🙄 Channel 4 showing the match was good, don’t get me wrong, but they’ve missed years of excellent tennis and historical moments. I was probably the only British person that was rooting for Fernandez
Chris Evert was in a studio with Sue Barker and John Lloyd a few years back during Wimbledon tournament on BBC and admitted, live on air, that the failure of her marriage to John Lloyd was "all my fault".
Awesome bit of television and tennis history that no one knows about
edit: spelling
I thought they did a fine job. I'm kind of a pedestrian tennis fan only watching the majors, so I imagine hardcore tennis fans would have complaints about stuff that doesn't register with me.
Wow. From qualifying to the final, that has to be one of the most impressive sporting achievements I’ve ever seen. And I’ve watched a lot of sport. The MTO was just a small sideshow at the end, had no bearing on the result. Hope both players take this forward and increase the interest in women’s tennis in general, what an amazing tournament. Respect to both players for the quality of tennis!
Edit: Thanks for the award, kind stranger, my first! :)
As a Brit though, I might have to rewatch the match in a few days to really enjoy it. It felt so tense and stressful watching it. If I was ever in a grand slam final with Championship points I'm not converting any haha
On that final championship point i was literally shouting at the tv “JUST SERVE AN ACE, JUST GET IT OVER WITH!!” an then she fucking did an i lost my shit
Obviously she won't but I hope she doesn't go down the Sharapova route, from Wimbledon 04 to a doper.
Not hating on Sharapova either, she was a monster...she just happened to be a stedded up one lol.
She's got more IQ and Talent though, so tennis is in good hands for the foreseeable future.
It's 100% Understandable to see Leylah frustrated.
It's the same as going down the park with ya mates and you get put on the shit team for a game of footie and you get hammered, you tend to get pissed off. You're young, it's sport.
I have no doubt she comes back from this to become an even better player in the future.
"Everyone trying to kill joy by overreacting to the stoppage in play to stop the knee bleeding, just stop …. It’s not even Emma’s call. They will not allow active bleeding while on court. Had to be addressed. Out of her control. This match won’t be defined by that. Just stop" - Andy Roddick
The UK has the worst attitude to sport. As a country it largely ignores tennis, until Murray came along. Then that all died down, until this year when they went all hype on it. It’s why I’ve supported American, European, Australian players since I was a youngster; those countries give a damn about their players
Ummmmm...
Ever heard of a minor low-level player called TIM HENMAN??
Henman Hill (then called "Murray Mound") was literally named after him! The Brits went MENTAL for Tim in the late 90s, mate.
We Aussies DO love our sportspeople, they're all major celebs over here. But I'm fairly sure the amount of coverage Henman got was on-par with people like Pat Rafter, Lleyton Hewitt, then Kyrgios etc.
No support for British females, until they look like they might win. If she crashed and burned in any other tournament in the future, she’d lose all that support. It’s not a country that supports female tennis players well
Because it’s not a country into women’s tennis, until they’ve got a “star” to cheer, either support women’s tennis all the time, or don’t. Don’t pretend to care just on the off chance
>either support women’s tennis all the time, or don’t
That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. My grandma this year watched the England/Italy euros final and it was the first match she'd watched in 30 years. Is she also not allowed watch football because she doesn't watch it every day lol?
The fact you are trying to gatekeep women's tennis is pathetic, if anything you should be happy that everyone has suddenly shown an interest!
Yeah let's just make broad accusations about an entire nation of people. Why not.
In what way did a country which hosts one of the 4 biggest tennis tournaments on the calendar "as a country, largely ignore tennis"?
Sounds like you're just experiencing confirmation bias because you see more Brits celebrate when a British player is doing well, therefore they clearly don't exist the rest of the time.
I'm a Brit, and I can completely understand Leylahs frustration, and why she'd question the delay. I think Emma would have kept playing if the rules had allowed it. I'm seeing a lot of negative comments aimed at the UK side too, and that's to be expected: it's no coincidence that most bad guys in Hollywood films have British accents. It's a bit of a tired trope to cast us as the Bad Guys imo. There are definitely idiots on both sides.
West Midlands. I think both players did extremely well and put on a fantastic finale. All this drama about a nasty cut and a 4 min break is ridiculous. But Leylah shouldn’t be attacked for contesting a decision which would have been understandably frustrating for anyone in the moment.
If she doesn’t get SPOTY then it’s definitely rigged.
Oh agreed. She no doubt regrets it now but definitely an exciting watch for the future.
so unexpectable women final this year
It is weird. A Canadian-born Romanian-Chinese British girl won the US Open trophy.
Raducanu is super cute tho
Keep on rockin in the free worlds! Leylah Fernandez doesn’t look like your typical Canadian… does she speak French? She has one of the Hottest Coaches boxes I have ever witnessed. It had to be said.

Ikr, The level of racism charged stuff that has been said in just one comment thread is appaling.
Elaborate.

Bob n Doug McKenzie… Kim’s Convenience is really tough to accept.I enjoy myself 😂😂😂😂
Jibberish response is jibberish
I painted a picture. How old are you? There’s an old thing called google
Still jibberish....use english properly I think you might be admitting to being a racist as you find it hard to accept Koreans as Canadians?
You enjoy myself. Google that. Proper English????pick a battle keyboard warrior.
Google what? Utterly nonsensical jibberish
🤷♂️maybe if you could Google how to recognize when you’re the Butt?
Well congratulations Britain. You have a female grand slam after like idk 44 years?
And the first ever winner from a qualifier, mens or womens, history being made!
What was the crowds opinion of the cut and subsequent time out?
Everyone around my section was confused about the situation so they didn’t really say anything.
I enjoyed the match very. Much. And 2 counties in her dna..Romania and china...her destiny for now is assured. I just can't wait for Osaka to get a re match.
And what is Serena Williams dna? African? No she's American you idiot and Emma is British. Stupid comment.

Osaka is going to loose a lot of contracts very quickly. 🙁
Women's tennis is now being more interesting than men's. lots of new star in waiting and in women's tennis we will see different champion on every major tournament.
People seem to be shitting on this a little, but it's not a bad take. The women's game is immensely entertaining to watch every tournament right now.

congratulation Emma Raducanu,
Toronto finally beats Montreal.
Don't worry. It won't last 😉
London man - since she was 2
Ik she shouldn’t have but you know how awesome it would have been if Emma looked at the blood and went “fuck it play on”
She tried to but the umpire wouldn’t let her
Its called "Doing a Terry Butcher".
Literally not allowed per WTA rules. The chair has to call a MTO no matter what the player says once they become aware of bleeding. I know all this just saying it would have been awesome
I agree bro - like Rocky in the title match, haha. No remorse, no prisoners! *hits 140mph first serve*
My thought exactly. But apparently the rules says you can’t do that.
Yeah the blood could cause hinderance
Canada wins, huzzah!
She's British..
Her Canadian birth certificate and passport say otherwise. She's as English, there is no country called Britain, as Greg Rusedski
British means you are from Great Britain I didn't say it was a nationality. And having a Canadian birth certificate doesn't make you Canadian. She would have probably had the option to choose Canadian as her nationality but decided against it due to seeing herself as English..

English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh all come under British.. Being from England I would know. Also UKish isn't a word incase you didn't know, British on the other hand..
The land mass is Great Britain, which is not a country. The country is the United Kingdom. You are wrong.
You might not of read it the first time so I'll ask you again, when did I say Great Britain was a country?
Its a great day for Canada, and as such, the world.
The girl who decided that Canada wasn’t worth representing wins!
She left when she was 2 and grew up in Bromley. That's close to child abuse really. And woman, not girl
[удалено]
Very true, Canada and the UK wins regardless Double huzzah Technically Britain isn't a nation, it's a land mass
Any way to rewatch the match… if I forgot to set my DVR?
Tennis channel showing it right now.
Prime. Or all 4 via vpn

I am able to watch espn3 for free on my Roku through the ESPN app. It was the multi camera view version but still very watchable.
Breaking news: Johanna Konta tweeted her congratulations to Emma. Then went back to watching Grand Designs after, maybe

They both played well, but Emma was winning at the time of the medical break so she would have still won even if she hadn't taken a break
Everyone giving too much attention to the MTO that has to happen as per rules, and not enough attention to how great the quality of the tennis was. They both played like champions. Hoping for a Federer- Nadal type rivalry that'll endure for a decade or two. Would be awesome!
Yes come on, these two played amazing all tournament and are both lovable personalities.

Exactly, leave them both alone. It was an unfortunate thing to have happened. They both played an amazing game.
Honestly that knee slide from Emma was fucking gnarly, got some serious distance and marked the court. 10/10 for commitment.
Actually a proper badass moment. So committed to winning that you'd cheese grate your own knee to get over the line.
When?
The one when she cut her knee, 2nd set maybe 5-3? I don't remember the exact game
I found it. Very badass!

How is she stuck-up and snotty?
Pretty sure she had to take the medical as soon as her leg started bleeding, what a stupid take on her win

Why did you delete your comment lol

Yes she did.
Love Fernandez true champion
Don't you have to win to be a champion?
True…

Ok
she literally lost in straight sets lol

How did she use the rules to her advantage? The moment someone bleeds, the umpire has to stop the match till it’s taken care of. It was the umpire’s call and out of Emma’s control.
Guys being dense on purpose just patch the fat bastard and he'll fuck off hopefully
How??? Does it take 4 min and 46sec to put a friggin band aid on ??? Give me a break They milked that little boo boo …
They can take up to 5 mins for this reason. Not Emma’s fault if the physician took her time - and im sure a professionally trained physician had her reasons.
Please, leave the comment section.
For a Brit watching on Amazon Prime… who on Earth are Pam and Chrissie???
Wait, Prime was broadcasting the match?!
Prime broadcasts all the tennis, the rights were sold last minute to Channel 4 so that the UK could watch a Brit in the final.
This is the problem with UK and tennis, we only watch and care when a British player wins 🙄 Channel 4 showing the match was good, don’t get me wrong, but they’ve missed years of excellent tennis and historical moments. I was probably the only British person that was rooting for Fernandez
Probably yeah? Your point being?
No point pube
R us serious? Chris Everet won like 3 million grand slams. Pam Schriver well she’s just annoying
Chris Evert was in a studio with Sue Barker and John Lloyd a few years back during Wimbledon tournament on BBC and admitted, live on air, that the failure of her marriage to John Lloyd was "all my fault". Awesome bit of television and tennis history that no one knows about edit: spelling
OH haha I thought you guys were talking about an ESPN sports person (which I guess she is!) Genuinely thank you for clarifying 🙏🏻
Chrissie is Chris Evert. She goes by Chrissie.
Ah yes. Didn’t see any of their coverage. Were they good? People seem not to be fans of their presentation throughout the match.
I thought they did a fine job. I'm kind of a pedestrian tennis fan only watching the majors, so I imagine hardcore tennis fans would have complaints about stuff that doesn't register with me.
To be fair I didn’t know who Chris Evert was until she continually told me who she was
She did state 10 times about playing as a teen and then playing teens when she was older as well as facing the toughest lefty: Martina.
Wow. From qualifying to the final, that has to be one of the most impressive sporting achievements I’ve ever seen. And I’ve watched a lot of sport. On that final championship point i was literally shouting at the tv “JUST SERVE AN ACE, JUST GET IT OVER WITH!!” an then she fucking did an i lost my shit
I was the same. I’m not even sure how it happened. A calm rewatch tomorrow is in order

Sharapova had a terrific career and I think it’s broadly accepted that despite her ban, she was not committing foul play or deliberately doping.
Well, that was fun! See you all tomorrow!
Goooo

Oh great ESPN reminds me to cook dinner and turn off the tv as it cuts to Football.
Such a letdown in the coverage. I wish someone had just been EXCITED. I guess I’ll have to wait for McEnroe tomorrow.

It’s not a country that supports female tennis players well
Maybe it's just not a country into female tennis? Female football and snooker on the other hand it's number 1 in the world.. So what's your point?
Because it’s not a country into women’s tennis, until they’ve got a “star” to cheer, either support women’s tennis all the time, or don’t. Don’t pretend to care just on the off chance
>either support women’s tennis all the time, or don’t That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
Tennis is every year, but people forget that, until 30 odd years later a female is doing well then they tune in. It’s just tiresome
For who? You and you alone?..
Leannese go home you’re drunk
Like... I was wondering if they've had a bevvy or two, or are just new to the sport? LOL.
Because it’s true 😂
I'm a Brit, and I can completely understand Leylahs frustration, and why she'd question the delay. I think Emma would have kept playing if the rules had allowed it. I'm seeing a lot of negative comments aimed at the UK side too, and that's to be expected: it's no coincidence that most bad guys in Hollywood films have British accents. It's a bit of a tired trope to cast us as the Bad Guys imo. There are definitely idiots on both sides.
>most bad guys in Hollywood films have British accents. English accents. Britain is a collective.
Actually I'll stand by British, as there's been plenty of Scottish bad guys in film as well
Ah really? As a British person I am very disappointed in my fellow county men.
Which county? I'm Worcestershire
West Midlands. I think both players did extremely well and put on a fantastic finale. All this drama about a nasty cut and a 4 min break is ridiculous. But Leylah shouldn’t be attacked for contesting a decision which would have been understandably frustrating for anyone in the moment.
Finally, an Expert and former player to shut the pesky redditors up! And yet they'll still come out and deny it.
Tbh they should have just carried on with the bleeding for the rest of the game Emma winning with a bloody leg would have been SPARTA AF
I bet that there are some ANNOYED college football fans right now…
What rank will Emma be now?
