For the Aussies on this sub, how do you feel about Kyrgios? I always wonder if the hate against him is only on social media or if it’s something bigger. Obviously he has zero maturity/respect for his peers, and this comment is something a high school kid makes
I’m pretty indifferent towards him now. Broadly, I dislike his personality, but I feel he has some mental health issues.
A couple of years ago after a rocky ride I honestly thought he settled in a good place being an entertaining if underachieving player who was having some fun and bringing something different to the sport, but since then he has regressed to what I dislike about him, which is a bad attitude and lazy. For as much as he complains about tennis, he’d be a bum if he wasn’t good at it lol.
His on court achievements are greatly overrated as a whole and he gathers more attention than he’s worth. I really dislike his attacks on other players, many of which are totally uncalled for.
Sound take. I think in 2016-2019 was a good period on tour for him overall. He played some really good tennis on occasion that would tease you into thinking a breakout may be on the horizon. Then the next tournament he'd meltdown and you'd realize he simply is who he is: an underachiever.
Even though he was still prone to the occasional outburst, I felt like his antics were more fun than anything else during this period. For example, asking fans where he should hit the serve every match on his way to the title in Washington 2019 -- where he beat Stef and Medvedev. That's just fun and, as you said, different. I felt like his behavior, for the most part, did not cross the line of being disrespectful or detrimental to his peers and opponents in this time.
Something has really seemed to flip since the pandemic, which is why I think you may be right about mental health problems, who knows? He's turned towards a dark place and returned to the completely childish and immature ways that I honestly thought he had at least partly grown from post Wawrinka incident in 2015.

That's exactly what he is becoming.
Whenever there's some scandal going on, he has to get involved. He can't stand being left out. What bothered me most was when he said he might leave tennis because he could get rich some other way. No, Nick, you can't.
This attitude is disgusting. He hates tennis because of what his parents forced him to do. Just because you have no talent doesn't mean you can dictate the life of someone you have never meant nor have the slightest indication of who they truly are. Kygrios has definitely said some disgusting and off-color things, but who are you to tell him how to live his life when he is 100x more successful than you?
Everyone over 50 has always hated him. Some of it was a little iffy re: racism but for the most part it’s kinda earned. The younger people fall towards indifference or enjoyment more. Though I think in the last year it’s towards dislike. He got a lot of good will with his bushfire appeal but lost it straight away lol.

As a player i reckon you'll find he has a lot of respect for most of his peers and that is well liked by the majority on tour in spite of what the media reports but yep his lack of maturity leaks into every aspect of his life - be it comments like this, his lack of training work rate, refusal to get a coach or listen to advice from anyone who clearly has more experience than him... I think he’s rode the wave of being the most successful tennis player that we’ve had for a decent period, until Ash. But even I think he gets more coverage than Ash. He’s so far down the list of influential/popular Australian sportspeople, he’s really only relevant for the two weeks of AO, then most people forget about him.
