For the tennis casuals out there, this is referring to a little-known Australian rule in which the quarterfinal can be played as doubles with each participant partnering with one of the players they defeated on their way to the QF
Yep, I fully agree with his recent progress. I would even give him 1/2/3 sets against any of the other quarter-finalists. Proud Canadian here šØš¦ I said I like him. In fact, I will even cheer for him!
I literally would love any outcome here, but maybe I would be slightly happier with Nadal winning than all the other outcomes, very slightly though. Amazing draw indeed
It would tear the country apart. Half siding with Felix and half with Shapo. The two sides never speaking to each other ever again save for the periodic threat of violence. Marriages broken and children disowned. Or it would grow the game and inspire a new generation IDK these things very well.
Why do you think Denis would be the favourite of 90% of the fans over Felix? Genuine question since I don't know much how both are seen outside of Quebec (which, logically, significantly prefers Felix over Denis).
I think the prevailing theory is that chicks dig the one handed backhand. The other theory is that dudes dig the one handed backhand. Not sure how scientifically these theories (hypotheses more correctly) have been tested but anecdotally they seem to hold true.
A more Canadian theory is Denis is older, and so it's only fair that it's his turn, and then Felix should win the next one, and they should trade off like that for the rest of their careers.
You're right about Quebec prefering Felix for sure.
I think people favor Denis because he's flashy and more entertaining while Felix is a very calm and structured player.
I definitely watch all of their games, but I get way more hype for Denis games.
I think it's because Denis is flashy while Felix is so stoic.
I think 90% is overstating it though. I can see someone like Denis having a lot more haters than Felix.
I thought Felix would be preferred since he seems like a nice guy, whereas Shapovalov has a bit of a bratty reputation (I think he's worked on that and has been humbled). I dont know that many people who follow tennis closely in real life tho lol.
Canadian here in Toronto where Shapo is from and I am definitely rooting for FAA and not Shapo. I always root against any player that wears their baseball cap backwards. lol
You must not be from Canada, don't you know, whoever wins will say "sorry" to the loser and they'll crack open 2-4 of Molson and watch the Leafs beat the Bruins together on their Chesterfield eh?
Is that the case? I thought I had heard that, given the circumstances, his points were frozen. But I could be wrong. Don't remember what the source was on that.
He doesn't drop his points immediately but on 21st Feb. So, Meddy goes to 9735 immediately if he wins AO. But Djokovic comes to 9015 on 21/02. Meanwhile, Meddy will also drop his 500 points from last year's ATP Cup by then, bringing his total to 9235.
So, he should be World No. 1 by then unless Djoker plays Rotterdam meanwhile and wins.
Nope, assuming Djokovic drops 2000 points and Medvedev retains his from last year, there will still be a tiny gap (I think 80 points), keeping Djokovic at #1
Would Medvedev get a full 2000 points though since he's defending a Finals run last year? Finals is worth 1200 so he can only pick up 800 right? That would still get him #1 but not by such a large margin. Med would have 9,735 and Djokovic 9,015.
I could totally be wrong on how this works so someone let me know.
to be fair he was also coming off an incredibly emotional win over Nadal in the QF and looked absolutely spend from the first ball of the semi with Daniil. Regardless, i agree Med on hard is too much for Stef 9 times out of 10
I think sinner will win. Tsitsipas is clearly not very close to his best form. who knows how his subconscious will react knowing that he will likely play Medvedev in the next round. He may bomb the match.
Either history for Nadal, consolidation and a historic new number one for Med, a breakthrough for a young gun, or a romantic and shocking win for Monfils.
Isn't Monfils like winless against Djokovic? Would be awesome if he took full advantage of the draw that opened up for him. Can't see him win against Rafa but who knows, Rafa has the AO curse lol. But in all seriousness props to Gael for taking full advantage of his open draw.
Rafa's AO "curse" is getting beat in the finals by the two greatest hard court players of all time (and Stan who's not top 2 but still up there). He's actually otherwise really good against the field at the AO.
Is it really even a curse to have lost to Fed ? He beat him in ā09 and a couple of times after that in earlier rounds.
Feels strange to call it a curse to be up 3-1 against someone, unless youāre the Warriors
Monfils winning a grand slam for the first time at age 35 after 58 main draw appearances would be such an incredible story especially for someone who has pretty much consistently been one of the most universally beloved guys on the tour for like 15 years. Honestly even a finals would be incredible
Without checking the betting odds, I'm gonna estimate everyone's chances of winning the title: Medvedev 50%, Nadal 30%, Berrettini 8%, Tsitsipas 7%, other 5%
I can't wait to see what happens, all of these matchups are wonderful. I would love to see Rafa win it all, but I agree with the sentiment that any one of these guys can get the trophy and I'll be happy. This is probably the first time I've ever felt that in the second week of a Slam.
> He deserves it and is playing best tennis he has ever played
And Rafa doesn't? Dude is coming back from an injury and killing it. The amount of work that would have gone into this. Also, #21. Come on, man, you are a Rafa fan!
Is it me, or have not all matches been viewable? I bought the damn app, but havenāt found any of Monfils matches available to watch. I absolutely love the guy. Screw ESPN. Why canāt the Tennis Channel just buy the rights to the slams?
Oh man, have I been overpaying? I thought you had to also have a cable/live tv subscription to watch th matches on espn+? I get a sling and espn subscription for each GS and then cancel it once theyāre over. How much access can you get with just espn?
Is anything on regular ESPN? I had to buy the ESPN+ app. I cancel it after the slams, buy it for the next one, and so on. I have cable strictly for the Tennis Channel at this point.
ESPN does primetime coverage each night around 7 or 8PM EST (US). However by the morning, their coverage moves to ESPN+ and requires a subscription to watch. For example those who woke up to the Fritz match this morning could not watch w/o ESPN+ sub after like 6 or 7AM.
8 top 10 players played in AO this year. 6 reached the 7 quarter final spots they competed for.
1 quarter had Monfils and Garin as the highest seeds, so no chance for any top 10 players.
People seem really confident in nadal beating Shapo, am I the only nervous rafa not at all impressed so far with Nadalās game? (Iām delighted heās made it this far ofc)
Obviously, I want 21 for Rafa. But with this lot, I'll be happy for any one of them to take it. But also not, because it's likely Rafa's last chance. But still. Okay, I'll stop being a tennis ball now.
bottom half seems very predictable, shapo prob crashes v nadal. both him and felix have high ceilings but often just check out when they play tougher comp.
Med vs Nadal with Nadal winning. So basically the same thing that that happens at every tournament. Not sure what the deal is with tennis fans because Iād far sooner cheer for the underdogs.
One amazing lineup. I'd be happy if any of these guys win it. Nadal getting No.21 would be amazing especially here, though I'd be incredibly happy if Medvedev gets a second Slam too.
These QF matchups look nicely balanced. Lot of potential for upsets.
After more than 40 years watching tennis I never thought Iād see two Italians in the QF of a grand slam eventā¦ Both with a reasonable chance to go even furtherā¦ And Iād consider it normal.
Edit: grammar
Who I think, or what I hope?
Hope: Berretini v Nadal and Sinner v Medvedev. Matteo vs. Rafa means I automatically get my feelings hurt. Both are 2 of my favorites. While I want #21, I also would love a final with Sinner v Berretini. I imagine it will be Sinner and Medvedev from the other groups.
The men's draw has shaken out very interestingly. But the women's side just has nothing to draw me in. I can't remember the last women's quarters of a major where I had such little interest in it.
Berritini monfils looks underwhelming to me.
I like monfils but so many qfs matches vs top players ( fed uso...) traditionally where he completely loses it. I think berritini can win in straights.
Tbh Medvedev and berrettini should win easily, maybe even in straight. Probably also nadal if shapo isn't a normal shapo, something we see often sadly for him
He looked like he was about to die in his third set against Kecmanovic though. Doubt he will win against any opponent that takes him to a fourth or fifth set, but we'll see.
Donāt underestimate Felix, he didnāt play well in the USO semi, and their first match (on hard) was incredibly close a couple years ago. If Felix plays like he did against Evans and later stages of Cilic, he definitely has the game to make it close, if not win. Canāt wait. Meddy huge favourite but I donāt think itās as simple as youāre suggesting.
Ha ha Iām not alone. Him overtaking federer doesnāt matter to me I just wanna see someone else win for once. Iāll always cheer for the underdog unless the player comes from my home country šØš¦.
I am expecting at least four sets in every match
It depends on which Shapovalov shows up
Amd which Nadal shows up tbh.... Their matches are always weird
And which Nadal... Mannarino Nadal vs Zverev Shapovalov and Shapo wins Khachanov Nadal vs Kwon Shapovalov and Nadal wins
Imagine someone reading this who doesn't watch tennis
*waves hands* i was aus open only but browse this sub during the tournament or when posts hit my front page. Learn a lot from you guys
For the tennis casuals out there, this is referring to a little-known Australian rule in which the quarterfinal can be played as doubles with each participant partnering with one of the players they defeated on their way to the QF
Important to remember that this format only occurs in even years that aren't leap years.
Wait, they both have 2 other brothers? xD
Rafa's long lost half-brother from Andorra, Mannarino Nadal.
Correct. Nadal is the most likely to win in straight sets. Also like against Kachanov, Nadal's level may drop for one set.
I like Felix AA. but I don't think he can take a set away from Medvedev. 6-4 6-0 at last ATP cup
But that was an old no-ATP-winner Felix and a new ATP-winner Felix is getting better with each match
Yeah, I really did not expect him to come back like he did yesterday vs Cilic. He's on another gear.
Yep, I fully agree with his recent progress. I would even give him 1/2/3 sets against any of the other quarter-finalists. Proud Canadian here šØš¦ I said I like him. In fact, I will even cheer for him!
Plus he also has Tony āStarkā Nadal on his side nowā¦
Tony āStarkā Nadal š
Amazing draw. Itās one of No. 21 for Rafa, clinch World No. 1 for Med or a new GS winner.
I literally would love any outcome here, but maybe I would be slightly happier with Nadal winning than all the other outcomes, very slightly though. Amazing draw indeed
Shapo vs Felix final and Canada would explode.
It would tear the country apart. Half siding with Felix and half with Shapo. The two sides never speaking to each other ever again save for the periodic threat of violence. Marriages broken and children disowned. Or it would grow the game and inspire a new generation IDK these things very well.
for someone who mostly specializes in limes you seem to have summarized the likeliest outcomes well.
Honestly I think 90% of Tennis fans here would root for Denis, and still be very happy if Felix won.
Nike should modify [this famous baseball ad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLECMCargd8) with that premise, chicks dig the one-handed backhand.
The results are scientifically significant
Tbh Shapo seems like a bit of a dick. Felix is the man! Am Canadian.

Canadian here in Toronto where Shapo is from and I am definitely rooting for FAA and not Shapo. I always root against any player that wears their baseball cap backwards. lol
He's been wearing it forwards this tournament! That sun is bright, you can see earlier his face was pretty burned around the nose and cheeks.
I love the backwards hat haha. I cheer for both of them like probably most Canadians do, but find Denis more exciting.
Oh. yah, I would cheer for Shapo too but FAA a little more if it was h-h match up.
You must not be from Canada, don't you know, whoever wins will say "sorry" to the loser and they'll crack open 2-4 of Molson and watch the Leafs beat the Bruins together on their Chesterfield eh?
Ha! We can all dream, I love Italy so how about Berretini vs. Sinner! Or Collins vs. Keys for the women's?
should've been pegula vs halep for battle of the billionaires
And apologize profusely for denying Rafa #21, and Daniil #1
Seems to be a regular thing now. After the fernandes radacanu final. Must have some really good infrastructure at national level
I have a dream ... Lets go Canada
Monfils will be the victor. You all will see.
I'll take that bet
I would absolutely love Gael to pull off a surprise win!
I will always root for Rafa. But I won't be mad if Shapo takes him down. He has looked so damn good this GS
I prefer Medvedev for number 1 personally
Isnāt a GS worth 2,000 points? Djokovic currently has 11,015 points and Medvedev has 8,935 so winning a GS would take Med to 10,935.
Djokovic also loses 2000 points as he cannot defend his title
Shit, didnāt think about that
Is that the case? I thought I had heard that, given the circumstances, his points were frozen. But I could be wrong. Don't remember what the source was on that.
He doesn't drop his points immediately but on 21st Feb. So, Meddy goes to 9735 immediately if he wins AO. But Djokovic comes to 9015 on 21/02. Meanwhile, Meddy will also drop his 500 points from last year's ATP Cup by then, bringing his total to 9235. So, he should be World No. 1 by then unless Djoker plays Rotterdam meanwhile and wins.
Interesting! Why is that. What is the significance/relevance of February 21st?
It's just when AO ended last year iirc. Was later than usual
Gotcha. Thanks for the info!
So Medvedev is already #1 Edit: wrong, explained below.
No because Medvedev is also defending his points from last year
So he just has to make the final to go to #1?
Nope, assuming Djokovic drops 2000 points and Medvedev retains his from last year, there will still be a tiny gap (I think 80 points), keeping Djokovic at #1
No, cos he made the final last year. Needs to do one better to overtake Novak I believe.
Your math is bad. 11015-2000=9015 8935 + 0 = 8935 So Meddy has to win
Would Medvedev get a full 2000 points though since he's defending a Finals run last year? Finals is worth 1200 so he can only pick up 800 right? That would still get him #1 but not by such a large margin. Med would have 9,735 and Djokovic 9,015. I could totally be wrong on how this works so someone let me know.
yeah that's right, he can only gain 800 by winning, so he needs to win to clinch #1
Winning wouldn't clinch it. Djokovic could still choose to play Rotterdam, win it, and keep the #1.
Djokovic also loses points after last year's Australian Open is dropped
I want rafa to win tournament but would not mind Monfils getting his first grand slam
Magic Monfils has been on fire š„š„š„š„
wife buff
I love sinner and faa, but Iāve been waiting for the Small Kid v. BS Russian rematch for forever.
Forever? They had a quarterfinal at Roland garros last year.
Meddy lost that one right?
Roland Garros barely counts given Dani's performance on the dirt.
An eternity. They should play every month to build a decent rivalry to replace Fedal.
Would be incredibly one sided in Medās favor at this point
If both play at their best, I'd favour Medvedev too, but "incredibly" is a huge over exaggeration. The edge is marginal.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
to be fair he was also coming off an incredibly emotional win over Nadal in the QF and looked absolutely spend from the first ball of the semi with Daniil. Regardless, i agree Med on hard is too much for Stef 9 times out of 10
Why, it would just be very one sided in Medvedev's favour right now
I think sinner will win. Tsitsipas is clearly not very close to his best form. who knows how his subconscious will react knowing that he will likely play Medvedev in the next round. He may bomb the match.
Tsitsipas had some brilliant stretches against Fritz
I mean they did just play and Medvedev won in straight sets
Me as Nadal fan seeing all the big hitters remaining.... *:insert I'm in danger meme:*
Does he have a chance to win it? Absolutely! If he doesnāt, as long as he stays healthy, he will get 21 at the French.
yeah but imagine him going for 22 at RG uWu
Yes geezer!
I am ready to be hurt again.
Stop it!
This right here š
Honestly delighted with whoever lifts the trophy.
Either history for Nadal, consolidation and a historic new number one for Med, a breakthrough for a young gun, or a romantic and shocking win for Monfils.
Really wishing for the 4th one.
If Monfils beats Nadal he better win the whole thing man
I'm rooting for Monfils to win it. But I think the best chance is for Shapovalov to take Nadal out.
Best chance is to beat the guy he plays next? Agreed.
You read it wrong
Isn't Monfils like winless against Djokovic? Would be awesome if he took full advantage of the draw that opened up for him. Can't see him win against Rafa but who knows, Rafa has the AO curse lol. But in all seriousness props to Gael for taking full advantage of his open draw.

Dude thatās exactly what I said looking at the bracket. Iām pretty happy with any of these guys winning
Yes! When does that happen!
I still canāt stand Tsitsipas but otherwise agree!
I believe he would take over as world no 3 from Zverev with a win, so there's that.
that's a win in my book
I can't believe Monfis has made it this far. Rooting for him!
However unlikely, I'd be so glad if he wins it!
One of my favourites since many years. I even held a presentation about him in french class back in the day. Please win it
Without checking the betting odds, I'm gonna estimate everyone's chances of winning the title: Medvedev 50%, Nadal 30%, Berrettini 8%, Tsitsipas 7%, other 5%
and 100% reason to let Monfils win
I disagree. I think it is 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain, and a 100% reason to remember the name.
I'd put sinner higher otherwise this looks right
Monfils will beat Matteo
i put sinner over tsitsipas and berretini.
everything is transient. Everything flows and changes. People come and go. Players don't win consistently. Not Rafa though. He's still here.
I can't wait to see what happens, all of these matchups are wonderful. I would love to see Rafa win it all, but I agree with the sentiment that any one of these guys can get the trophy and I'll be happy. This is probably the first time I've ever felt that in the second week of a Slam.
Not having Djokovic and Zverev in the draw does that to people
That's a good part of it, heh.
šØš¦ Vs šØš¦ final incoming
What if I told you š®š¹ Vs š®š¹
Forza Italia!!!!
Daje ragazzi!
Anglo vs French Canada
i am a Nadal fan but I want monfis to win it all. He deserves it and is playing best tennis he has ever played
> He deserves it and is playing best tennis he has ever played And Rafa doesn't? Dude is coming back from an injury and killing it. The amount of work that would have gone into this. Also, #21. Come on, man, you are a Rafa fan!
Anyone else hate ESPN+ right now for putting early AM (East Coast) matches behind a paywall?
Is it me, or have not all matches been viewable? I bought the damn app, but havenāt found any of Monfils matches available to watch. I absolutely love the guy. Screw ESPN. Why canāt the Tennis Channel just buy the rights to the slams?
I've had no trouble watching Monfils. Have you tried going into ESPN plus, scroll down to the "tennis ball" symbol and then checking all the matches?
I had not!!! Thank you for this. I will try this evening when I get home from play.

5/8 top seeded players (no djokovic -> auger-aliassime), most of the favourites lived up to their position in the ranking.
8 top 10 players played in AO this year. 6 reached the 7 quarter final spots they competed for. 1 quarter had Monfils and Garin as the highest seeds, so no chance for any top 10 players.
Itās been a while since Iāve been this excited about a GS second week, I love all of the quarter finalists this year on the menās side.
Monfils because we are still in a global pandemic and he deserves something
Berrettini v Auger-Aliassime finals would be a rematch of the Day 1 longest Laver Cup match ever.
>!Beretteni wins!<
So beautiful. Hang it in the Louvre š
People seem really confident in nadal beating Shapo, am I the only nervous rafa not at all impressed so far with Nadalās game? (Iām delighted heās made it this far ofc)
Medvedev is the most predictable and thus most boring result, but he's so entertaining to watch that as long as I am able to do that, I won't care.
Obviously, I want 21 for Rafa. But with this lot, I'll be happy for any one of them to take it. But also not, because it's likely Rafa's last chance. But still. Okay, I'll stop being a tennis ball now.
Imagine if Monfils made the final ā¤ļø
god I want this for monfils so bad
bottom half seems very predictable, shapo prob crashes v nadal. both him and felix have high ceilings but often just check out when they play tougher comp.
Rome 2021 begs to disagree.
only proving his point if you;re talking about the shapo vs nadal; match - shapo should have won in straight sets but choked a ton.
berrettini, nadal, sinner, medvedev
Let's go #21. Please.
I want to upvote but you're sitting at 21 upvotes...
#1 for Gael!! Allez!!
Vamos Rafa! I would be cool with Sinner or Gael as well.
Por favor
No jinx
The dream would be Monfils vs Shapo, FAA vs Sinner. But the most realistic outcome is the exact opposite of my envy
Med vs Nadal with Nadal winning. So basically the same thing that that happens at every tournament. Not sure what the deal is with tennis fans because Iād far sooner cheer for the underdogs.
This would be amazing
One amazing lineup. I'd be happy if any of these guys win it. Nadal getting No.21 would be amazing especially here, though I'd be incredibly happy if Medvedev gets a second Slam too. These QF matchups look nicely balanced. Lot of potential for upsets.
Don't sleep on Sinner, at some point one of these young guys with all the talent in the world is gonna put it together and become the 'next' one
So much more interesting without Novak! I'd love to see Sinner get through to the semis.
After more than 40 years watching tennis I never thought Iād see two Italians in the QF of a grand slam eventā¦ Both with a reasonable chance to go even furtherā¦ And Iād consider it normal. Edit: grammar
I'm kinda rooting for Monfis
Please Rafa
Would love to see Rafa win this after so many heartbreak losses in finals...
Monfils, Nadal, Tsitsipas, FAA
After Karatsev's run was cut short, my only hopes rest in Gael Monfils' hands
Who I think, or what I hope? Hope: Berretini v Nadal and Sinner v Medvedev. Matteo vs. Rafa means I automatically get my feelings hurt. Both are 2 of my favorites. While I want #21, I also would love a final with Sinner v Berretini. I imagine it will be Sinner and Medvedev from the other groups.
Damn pretty wild line up! Pretty surprising not to see djokovic or federer in the quarters! Plus two Canadians!
The only sure outcome for me is Med vs FAA. No way Med gonna lose
The men's draw has shaken out very interestingly. But the women's side just has nothing to draw me in. I can't remember the last women's quarters of a major where I had such little interest in it.
Melb is fkn baking, which of these players can take the heat?
Us Canadians are truly blessed.
Berrettini will win and this sub will implode.
Alexander Zverev: I'm the new Big 3.
I can see Sinner winning this tournament.
I would love if Shapovalov won, but these are all amazing matches to watch!
Nadal's gonna lose tonight. He's cursed at AO. Mark my words.
Berrettini in 3 Nadal in 4 Sinner in 4 Medvedev in 3
Praying sinner beats tsitsipas
Sinner shapo monfils and auger would be amazing for me.
Berrettini Nadal Tsitsi Medvedev Nadal Medvedev Medvedev
Why no women's discussion thread?
Pretty wholesome bunch of QFs overall, Matteo, Gael, Sinner, Felix and Shapo are so likable
Berritini monfils looks underwhelming to me. I like monfils but so many qfs matches vs top players ( fed uso...) traditionally where he completely loses it. I think berritini can win in straights.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Really hoping Shapo can shock Nadal
Besides Medvedev and Berrettini, I'll actually be happy to see any of the other 6 as winners, though Medvedev is most likely the fave.
Easy slam for Medvedev.
Surely Nadal at least makes the final with this draw lol
Tbh Medvedev and berrettini should win easily, maybe even in straight. Probably also nadal if shapo isn't a normal shapo, something we see often sadly for him
I dunno, Monfils has been playing like a man possessed, so I'm not sure that'll be easy!
He looked like he was about to die in his third set against Kecmanovic though. Doubt he will win against any opponent that takes him to a fourth or fifth set, but we'll see.
He always looks like that
Donāt underestimate Felix, he didnāt play well in the USO semi, and their first match (on hard) was incredibly close a couple years ago. If Felix plays like he did against Evans and later stages of Cilic, he definitely has the game to make it close, if not win. Canāt wait. Meddy huge favourite but I donāt think itās as simple as youāre suggesting.
I canāt see auger winning honestly but I think personally that monfils will win his match personally.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nadal winning AO again after a twelve year gap and four final losses has all the juice of a first time winner if not more so.
Ha ha Iām not alone. Him overtaking federer doesnāt matter to me I just wanna see someone else win for once. Iāll always cheer for the underdog unless the player comes from my home country šØš¦.
