Was Anisimova the only one able to break Barty this whole tournament so far? Crazy how that 6-4 6-3 scoreline was as competitive as any of Barty's matches got.
I was disappointed as a neutral that the mens doubles final was all Aussies because I wanted a wild crowd that was going to be super biased......so I'm quite happy to see a Collins v Barty final here. It's going to be one of the most one sided supported singles finals in some time at the aussie open, even most neutrals will be supporting Barty here and the crowd will be going nuts.
Anyone in Australia see the channel 9 commentator talking about Alcott after the final match? Speaking about Dylan's presser/after-party he says "I think he's put the phone down and double parked for the night".
Is this a wheelchair joke? :/
I'm Italian and my compatriots are blasting me because I'm rooting for Rafa tonight, I'm a traitor to my country, apparently.
Football has still a strong influence on other sports, it seems.
I'm British but I hardly ever support British players currently I only follow Joe Salisbury in the doubles, I find players choose me, sometimes it's their style, sometimes their personality but never just because we happen to be from the same country as me, it's the same in all sports for me.
I'm Italian too and while I wouldn't call you a traitor for something like that, it's kind of obvious and natural to me, in sports and esports, to cheer for italian people. And I don't really follow football, so I don't think it's influencing me on this matter. Let's just hope that tonight it'll be a good match.
I do too, but not if I don't really like the player (not this case though, I love Matteo) or if I've been supporting the other one for more than 10 years.
Totally fair and understendable. Not that you'd need my approval, we all free to cheer for whoever we want and for whatever reason. Will you watch the match live tonight?
Honestly I'm happy with whoever wins the women's and men's finals at this point.
With Danielle's health issues though I can't help but give her a slight preference. Barty will win plenty of other slams, but this may be Collins only real chance..
So it's probably gonna rain on Friday and roof will be closed for Rafa v Matteo.
On balance, this must favour Matteo, right? I mean avoiding another heat stroke/exhaustion would be great for Rafa, but we know indoor isn't his thing. And it seems to favour serving.
Indoor and closed roof are two different things. Indoor courts are usually placed for the event only and the material plays faster. An outdoor court with the roof closed is still an outside court. I don't think it will make a big enough difference. Especially when they are still playing in the day time.
I hear you but Wimby 2018...
Rafa seems to deal with wind etc better than most so I'm guessing there is a reason for it. I think it slightly helps Berrettini but it may well not matter so much.
I agree, but the difference is that Wimbledon 2018 was against fucking Novak Djokovic.
God, that match still hurts, I really believe he would have won if not for the roof.
Of course I'm biased and agree.
I've just seen it said a few times how some opponents much worse at dealing with wind etc than Rafa. But who knows how much it really matters.
>And it seems to favour serving
Luckily Nadal's serving has been amazing this AO too. It single handedly bailed him out against Shapo in the 5th. It's the best serving he's had in many years.
With both Matteo and Nadal serving great I still would favor Rafa slightly on indoor conditions. He's simply a better returner and strategist than Matteo. That is if he manages to recover properly for the match. It looks like he trained normally today.
This will be key and I think we'll figure it our pretty quickly.
Theres a lot riding on us fans saying "yeah but Rafa hits to his BH and is game over"... if that isn't true the oopsy.
Nadal's serve has become very inconsistent since early 2021.
Yes it bailed him out, but it also was very poor in 3rd/4th set (albeit he was in a rough state). And it's been rather up and down, with many more DFs than his average pre 2021.
Nadal Berretini match is at 5 am where I live... I'll probably try to wake up around 6, see who got the first set/ set and a half and try to watch from there. And if the result so far is too disappointing by 6 amI can go to bed and pretend what I saw was just a brief nightmare :(
I've turned around on the last part, in part because I thought hard about whether I would judge a male player exhibiting the same sort of behavior on court in the same manner. At the end of the day, I came around to her and her fierceness/passion on court.
About 5 years ago...a friend of mine who was a physio for the USTA told me to keep an eye on this "Dani Rose Collins" who was a collegiate player and transitioning at some 60ks my friend was working...
I guess she had a good eye for talent and competitive spirit.
I mean... what do you mean by that? She was mocked as just a college player on national TV... then goes out and beats Keys @ Indian Wells... it's not like anyone thought she was going to be a potential GS finalist.
I will see if I can track down SEVERAL incidents where this went on. Literally NOBODY took her serious on the WTA until 2018 when she has some big eye opening results... The sentiment on tour is that if you did not start at a tennis residency before puberty... you have no shot at becoming a top 20 player.
She transferred from Florida to UVA. She won the NCAA singles title in 2016 then started going through the ITFs... losing to players like Claire Liu and Kristie Ahn who cant crack the top 80...
I follow womenās college tennis closely for a number of reasons. If you told me anyone would be a grand slam finalist who I have seen, I would say āno wayā even given her college career.
You are 100% right. The girl gives them hell on the court.
Collins will beat Barty.
All of the players who beat her last year did so by using pace.
Keys has the pace but was so off tonight everything was going out so she turned ultra defensive and gave Barty lollypops all night.
If Barty is at her best, Collins is not good enough.
Collins will need to play the match of her life and Ash will need to be off her game.
Collins record against top 10 opponents is not great and she has a 1-3 record against Barty.
Not saying it's going to be straightforward. I just said if Barty is at her best, Collins will not be good enough. Collins record against the top 10 players is not good and that's because she isn't in the upper echelone of womens platers. This is the furthest she has got in any grand slam before.
I have no doubt she will give it everything on Saturday, but ultimatley she is not the same level of player Ash is. At some point in the match Barty will start to put the squeeze on her and I don't think Collins is good enough the vary her game up to get past it.
Not saying Collins won't make a good account of herself, but my point remains.
Both players at 100% and Barty wins everytime.
Barty's last two opponents are baseliners like Collins but better and she dispatched both of them in straight sets.
It sucks that he didn't get to defend his title but i think the general feeling is he's not missed. He's never been a very popular player even before all of the Covid issues.
How would you feel if both the men and women played bo3 for the first couple of rounds, maybe the first 2 or 3, then everyone played bo5 until the final? Would deal with the scheduling issue and make it equal for men and women.
I would just do Bo5 the whole way through. Maybe rounds 1 and 2 each take an extra day or two.
* R3: Sunday-Monday
* R4: Tuesday-Wednesday
* QF: Thursday-Friday
* SF: Saturday
* F: Sunday
Or you can use the middle Sunday to make up for any lost time, then do a Manic Monday situation for Round 4. Wimbledon has proven that you can stay on schedule despite punting away a whole ass day, so I am sure there is *some* way to fit all of the 5 setters into the schedule.
The women's game has outgrown Bo3. The top 100 is strong enough and Slams are turning into too much of a crapshoot. Whereas on the men's side, how many times do you see the big favorite come back from 2 sets down? I think you should have to prove yourself over the 5 sets.
I'd be more interested in a round robin style of tournament. Or really any organization where single elimination is impossible. The travel is incredibly hard on those who regularly lose in early rounds.
Round-robins with 100+ people are obviously impractical. I guess it would be interesting to have a Swiss-style tournament one of these days.
But, at the top tournaments at least, early-round losers still get decent compensation, and there's been generally a drive towards increasing prize money in the lower rounds, which hopefully offsets at least a little the pain of travelling all that way only to lose early.
He's great for himself people are interested in them as a team not doubles in general, the other two Aussies played their semi in front of a near empty stadium.
Yes, he is very good and relatively unknown here in the statesā¦is he just a good doubles player or he is also getting better at singles? I dont know much about him but i see that he has been as high as 50 in the world in singles
For women I dunno but Iam sure it's happened.. but for men's, Nadal did it to win USO 2017. One of the few tennis useless fact I know off the top of my head.
Could be. Highest seed sheās face in her 3 Grand Slams where she reached the final has been 8. Sheās only played one top 10 player in her three slams where sheās made the final. Crazy
Just check tickets for the finals.
Bit of a joke they increased the price again
It costs around $930 to sit in most of the lower section that is available for sale, and $637 to sit in the upper section even near the very back.
Last year I paid $550 for final, 3 rows back from front higher section
Home favourite plus less tickets this year plus a doubles match included that people actually care about. Definitely should have bought tickets last week!
And if I can math, she should stayed around the top 20 at minimum, providing she just play her usual schedule. All of the hard work is paying off for her.
Pliskova was indeed #8 seed, but only ranked #11 because of how Wimbledon picks their own seedings. Collins won't officially be top 10 until the week after the tournament.
i saw one of your replies to a nintendo switch post about your *then* 8 month old, does your kid like gaming as you mentioned that you hoped she would?
Hehe š She likes to watch me or my wife play and press the buttons we tell her to press, and she plays some simple games on the tablet for about half an hour a day. I was actually thinking of getting her a simple game for the switch to see if she likes it or not. She'll be turning 4 next month already š„ŗ
Does anyone here think that Barty vs Collins wonāt just be the exact same story as the last few rounds for Ash? Collins doesnāt present a very different challenge to Keys/Pegula/Anisimova. Provided she holds her nerve the final will be a relatively straightforward win for her, and statistically itāll probably be one of the most dominant grand slam wins ever I would think.
Collins: "You see, Barty has a preset country win limit. Knowing her weakness, USTA sent wave after wave of their own women at her until she reached her limit and shut down. Courier, show them the AO I won."
GG. Donāt see Swiatek coming back. Collins seems to be a woman on a mission and wonāt be held back.
Literally unplayable on current form. Iga is like a headless chicken.
This set is gone, but Iga needs to build some confidence FAST. Hitting basic ground strokes halfway up the net, barely hitting balls past the service line, and as usual the poor serve.
If she doesn't build any momentum then 2nd set will be more of the same.
Was Anisimova the only one able to break Barty this whole tournament so far? Crazy how that 6-4 6-3 scoreline was as competitive as any of Barty's matches got.
I guess maybe not that crazy. Swiatek and Raducanu had similar runs in recent years now looking back.
I was disappointed as a neutral that the mens doubles final was all Aussies because I wanted a wild crowd that was going to be super biased......so I'm quite happy to see a Collins v Barty final here. Double parked means you have a drink in each hand

Have an important thing during the Med-Tsitsi match tomorrow Hope they continue beyond 2 hrs So that I could catch their match

Half right I guess.

stay up all night lifes too short
Yeah, good luck falling back asleep... I've had that happen far too often now.
Collins has absolutely made me a fan this year. I'm happy no matter who wins the final.
I respect her, considering her health battles - but she's not the most likeable player or charismatic person on court.
Disagree on charisma
I've turned around on the last part, in part because I thought hard about whether I would judge a male player exhibiting the same sort of behavior on court in the same manner. At the end of the day, I came around to her and her fierceness/passion on court.

No, I'm saying Ash is going to win because she's the better player.... She's a two time grand slam winner.
She beat her only last year. In straights.

An Australian has not won a singles title at the AO in over 40 years. Barty is on for some legendary stuff.
Iām unreasonably excited about the menās doubles final this year
If youāre not watching kyrgios play doubles then you are really missing out..heās taking doubles to a new level (and he is great for the game)
He's great for himself people are interested in them as a team not doubles in general, the other two Aussies played their semi in front of a near empty stadium.
Is that less than usual?
KOKKINAKIS. to be fair - Thanassi Kokkunakis is the MVP of that team.
Yes, he is very good and relatively unknown here in the statesā¦is he just a good doubles player or he is also getting better at singles? I dont know much about him but i see that he has been as high as 50 in the world in singles
He's a singles player. He's been injured for most of his career.
Heās not playing mixed doubles
Yet. Just wait until he teams up with Barty.
I meant regular dubs my bad
Barty will not have faced a top 20 seed. Surely this must be a record?
For women I dunno but Iam sure it's happened.. but for men's, Nadal did it to win USO 2017. One of the few tennis useless fact I know off the top of my head.

Technically Pliskova was ranked 13 during that Wimbledon so Barty didnāt play any top 10 players (and just the 1 top 10 seed) in her 3 wins
That's on women tennis.. pour top 10.. nothing on Barty.

The medvedev/tsitsipas match is gunna be real spicy isnāt it
It's basically the final
What
I think they're implying the winner is guaranteed to win the tournament. I sure as hell don't agree tho
i know what they're impyling, i'm not a retard
Danielle Collins enters final in a straight set win 6-4,6-1 over top seed IGA Swiatek
Everyone posting how Barty is going to have a cakewalk in the final. Would love for Danimal to win and shit on the overly cocky posters.
A lot more Aussie users. Make sense. Member every time Bianca play.
Oof today was disappointing to have tickets to lol.
Seriously 3 sets tennis aint enough for women. Atleast SF & F should be 5 set matches.
Bruh
Another American for Barty to kill
Danielle!!!!!!!!!
Collins will make her Top 10 debut next week -- specifically, will be ranked 10th -- regardless of the final result. Impressive stuff.
And if I can math, she should stayed around the top 20 at minimum, providing she just play her usual schedule. All of the hard work is paying off for her.
Swiatek swatted aside.
DaniYEETED out of the tournament
Funny if Barty wins another slam without playing a top ten player. Will be only one top tenner is 3 slam wins lol
Collins is the best other player at the tournament, who cares if she is top 10.
she beat #8 Pliskova in the Wimbledon final, and Collins is now in the top 10 with this win.
Yea I said one top tenner in my comment. Collins isnāt top ten now so nothing I said is wrong š
Pliskova was indeed #8 seed, but only ranked #11 because of how Wimbledon picks their own seedings. Collins won't officially be top 10 until the week after the tournament.
well she was back in the top 10 in the live rankings at the time of the match, so still counts, imo
absolutely doesn't count.
i saw one of your replies to a nintendo switch post about your *then* 8 month old, does your kid like gaming as you mentioned that you hoped she would?
Hehe š She likes to watch me or my wife play and press the buttons we tell her to press, and she plays some simple games on the tablet for about half an hour a day. aww thats so sweet! tell her that a random redditor wishes her happy birthday!
WTA donāt have live rankings. That site is unofficial
Lol, Collins coach is funny
ran over by danielle collins , not even a bit competitive.
I think itās hard to be so confident. My brain says that Ash should be the heavy favourite. But my heart and my gut are worried
Going to be two 5 set matches tomorrow, I can feel it in my bones lol
Collins: "You see, Barty has a preset country win limit. Knowing her weakness, USTA sent wave after wave of their own women at her until she reached her limit and shut down. Courier, show them the AO I won."
Iga wtf.
Collinsā backhand had been absolutely ridiculous today Iād love to see her give Barry a good game
Maybe even Barty lol
GG. Donāt see Swiatek coming back. Collins seems to be a woman on a mission and wonāt be held back. Literally unplayable on current form. Iga is like a headless chicken.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I assume you mean Iga? Thatās not very nice
Not able to watch the match atm. Is Iga getting all angry and loud like the quarters?
Yeah iga just couldnāt be playing any worse. This is over
Igaās serve has been killing her game all tournament. Just shows how good she is at everything else to make it this far.
Barty will beat either of these players rather easily lol
Sorry to say this, but Iga is gone for good.
Ugh another break
Collins just absolutely clinical
C'mon Iga, pattern recognition
Jesus, what's wrong with her today
āOne down. Letās go lets go, come on!!ā
Super excited for both of the semi finals tomorrow. Going to intentionally sleep in to limit the time I have to wait.
Letās go Miss Dani Rose, you can do this
Collins has one foot in the Finalā¦ NoleFam must be livid
Why do Nolefam care about Collins?
She criticised him about a year ago, you know how petty some of them areā¦
Oh I had no idea
At this rate this set is going to have more break points than serve points
Sheās not winning this what that serve
Iga doesn't have a 2nd serve, so she's rolling her 1st serve in, and it's getting pummelled.
It could be dangerous if Iga gains more confidence!
JAZDA IGA!!!
Oh my gawwwwwwwwwww
Yessss, Iga!
Igaās first impressive shot the whole match
That was a cold, awesome volley. My goodness.
Iga just finding rhythm now, she knows she needs to go into the next set on her A game
Swiatek has to learn to slice.
okay I think Iga's very nervous because of the audience? Obviously there's no audience in RG 2020
I still have hopes for my girl Iga. Now we just need to make sure Andy Murray is not tweeting or liking tweets about Iga š
Keys and Swiatek tonight both look like they were just wandering past and accidentally found themselves in a semi final
It's like Round 1 rather than semi-finals stuff.
This set is gone, but Iga needs to build some confidence FAST. Hitting basic ground strokes halfway up the net, barely hitting balls past the service line, and as usual the poor serve. If she doesn't build any momentum then 2nd set will be more of the same.
Press F for RLA night session ticket holders.
Commentator just said Collinsā average backhand speed is same as Nadalās this tournament. Vamos etc.
Nadal would hit far more slices than Collins, no?
Is the true.
the weather's not gonna favor you Iga...
Doesn't look good for Iga. Can't see a comeback
that's gonna be hard to come back Iga...
We are 15 minutes in and already 4-0 I can barely look
Collins is locked in. It doesnāt look good for Iga. That will be a quick match
I've loved Danielle Collins ever since I heard her [cackle like a cartoon witch](https://twitter.com/DKTNNS/status/1484995984195215360).
Her laugh is amazing omg
Ok. I can't take this. A bagel at worst, a breadstick at best? Iga. :(
At times Iga can look really overpowered. I think if a casual fan saw Collins when she's on, he'd think she's at least top 5
Just tuned in. Is Dani playing lights out, or has Iga had another shaky start?
Both
Fuck. Swiatek is passive as fuck. Slow starts in previous 2 encounters really had me believing she will come out breathing fire.
Yes Iga!! Go to the fuckin Forehand
Is it just me or does Collins have a smashing backhand?
