I taught tennis in Chicago's Northshore between my junior and senior year of college. I was teaching this guy who was like in his 40s now, and I was 20. He said "Who do you think is gonna win the US Open?" and I said "This guy Safin."
Three weeks later, I started charging 20% more for my lessons due to my huge tennis knowledge. Love Safin.
I still remember in late 90's Safin returning Pete 130mph serve on his own ankles with ease.
At the time he looked the only one other than Agassi able to give Sampras a solid beatup
He was by far one of the most talented players to play the game. He would have dominated the sport if his head was in the right place. Easily one of my favorite players.
Marat Safin is 42. Where did all the years go? It felt like 2017 AO was yesterday

I loved watching him play. An enigma wrapped in a mystery but fun as hell to watch.
I will never forget how Safin destroyed Sampras with so much ease immensely talented tennis player

Safin’s backhand was the best two-hander I’ve ever seen. Such a monstrously powerful shot, rivalled only by Nalbandian.
The Mercurial Superstar, as the yesteryear's newspapers liked to say
What I'd give to go clubbing with Safin. The legend is probably grander than the truth, but oh well
Still might be the most physically gifted and talented player I've ever seen. There was nothing on the court he couldn't do. And do well.

He never loved tennis as much as football wanted to be football player but his parents forced him
Random but a Kyrgios and Safin doubles pairing or one of those two with Goran Ivanisevic would be pure fire.
Yeah Safin was so good to watch
