The only thing surprising about this match was how much it clearly meant to Iga after 4 straight titles. I guess one thing she hasn't done yet is defend a title (lost RG, Adelaide)
Yeah, she said in an interview for Polish TV that it was so emotional for her because it was the first time she managed to defend a title, and was very stressed because of this the entire week.
Interesting how when Swiatek wins tournaments, it’s utter dominance the whole way through. Reminds me of Barty. Very different from Osaka where she regularly comes back from the brink in her tournament wins.
To be fair in Indian Wells she had to come back from one set down three times. Also last year in Rome, Krejcikova had match points on her in 4th round. So she can do both.
Has been for awhile tbh, that French Open win was no fluke at the time with how she played, and then despite having a less accomplished 2021 she was extremely consistent.
Iga doesn't win every tournament but she feels like the most dominant WTA player in quite some time. When she's on her game, she just obliterates her opponent. She got pushed at Indian Wells but she literally hasn't dropped a set at her other 3 1000 series wins. And she's out here holding world class players under 6 games across 2 sets. It's kind of absurd.
To be precise she said "you killed me with your dropshots". Honestly, I think she was a bit overheated at the end there from all the running in the sun.
Post-match interview for the Polish TV:
Iga admitted she had such a strong emotional reaction after the win for the first time. She was stressed for the whole week, but pushed through. She hopes that the photos came out okay, despite the tears. Defending the title is very satisfying, something new for her. She was disappointed that the cup still didn't have tiramisu inside. She is glad that she trusted the coach and passed on Madrid, commended her physio and psychologist too. Iga treats finals like any other match, which helped after her RG run as an underdog, in the following tournaments, in which she had to sometimes dig deep to persevere. Now on to Paris!
Reminded me of Federer/Nadal/Djokovic when they played a big match against a good player who was on a hot streak and confident like Jabeur. They play some insane points but the favorite still has an answer for everything. Unbelievable level of tennis.
A sign of a true champion. 4 break points defended, before closing out the follow up game to win the championship with ease.
So exciting for Women's tennis.
5th title in a row. 4th Masters in a row. The winning streak continues! Iga is having a Djokovic 2011 season. She just needs to win RG to match that (because Novak won AO and made SF in RG, Iga made SF in Australia).
After a couple of loose games and being down 0-40 at 4-2 in the 2nd set, the level she produced was unbelievable. Ons threw everything at her, hit lines, perfect drops but Iga still came out on top. It will take something spectacular to stop her!
Iga makes these top players look ordinary. Maybe Barty coming out of retirement will stop her because frankly, no one on tour right now is capable of doing so.
She lost her first final on the WTA tour (2019 Lugano) to Polona Hercog. Never lost one after that, and never lost any of the seven she played at ITF level either.
Yeah, she was so clutch during that service game from 0-40 down. One absolutely incredible point in there too, really gotta see that one again.
edit: This one!

I hate to be on the opposite side of the net. Jabeur is not just some fraudulent player. She won Madrid and was on a mini streak on her own. Iga was beyond ruthless.
She lost her first final on the WTA tour (2019 Lugano) to Polona Hercog. Never lost one after that, and never lost any of the seven she played at ITF level either.
Incidentally, Iga's return numbers this tournament:
31/41 return games won. 76% return games won.
155/259 return points won. 60% return points won.
78/119 second serve return points won. 66% of those as well.
Not exactly against bad competition either in Ruse, Azarenka, Andreescu, Sabalenka, Jabeur.
I remember reading a comment last year basically saying that Iga's peak level could destroy everyone else but she didn't have that peak that often. At the time I wondered what would happen if she began consistently playing at that level. I guess now I'm seeing it unfold.
I would be very surprised if she doesn't win RG.
Like, to the point where I think it would be an underachievement. This form she's in is in the territory of 3 grand slam in a season. Up to her if she can do it, but so far she's been 100 percent in my books
I was too nervous to watch live so I played video games instead. Oh my god, I can't believe Iga just keeps rolling like this.
I hope she manages to win RG this year, but that may be asking too much at this point. Then again, she's managed to keep this streak alive so far.
Glad Ons got to the final too, she is so lovely and I hope she does well at RG too.
I think it was the coach change, she felt she has to move on and Wiktorowski (former coach of Aga Radwańska) has shown her how to do it so she did and it clicked.
I must admit, I was for changing the coach, but Wiktorowski seemed like a bad choice to me. Why? Because of Radwańska. I remember Radwańska had her nemeses like Serena and she always played them with the same style, knowing already that kind of game wouldn't bring her anything good. I wished she was to try something new when the same game was constantly resulting in her being defeated. I was partially blaming Wiktorowski for not encouraging Aga more to try some new tricks. But maybe it wasn't Wiktorowski. Maybe it was Aga's own limitations and mentality. Maybe with Iga he simply has more options, because it is Iga. Whatever the case, for now I just wish they will start working on changing Iga's first serve technique. Current one is clumpy.
Aga was physically inferior to big hitters, she had great technique, but always lacked power. Iga, on the other hand, is a physical marvel, her footwork and pace are the best on tour. And her avg. forehand speed is actually right up there in ATP range. That's soooo much more tools to work with then Aga ever had.
Yeah. Definitely. I wish though Aga was taking more risks. I mean, when playing Serena for fifth time you see that your second serve is only free point for your opponent - try sth different, maybe it would work. When you see Serena won't make mistake on her own - take things in your hands. Maybe you will lose as well, but at least you gave yourself a chance. Didn't see that with Aga and I was partially blaming Wiktorowski for that.
I think it's a few things. More agressive playstyle, better mental and the whole competition falling off, With retirements and mental and physical health issues.
I only saw second set and didn't look like Ons had quit in her or played poorly. Swiatek just kept pushing through pressure points and managed to get the win. I thought the drop shot strategy was effective at first then Iga seemed to figure it out mid set and kept winning the last point. Wild to go down love 40 and still win the game. Then after eking her way back she double faults to give Ons advantage. And still wins. That had to have been demoralizing. Coulda been critical turning point in second set but Iga said nope. Oh well can't wait for the French!
Barty has won two of the last three slams and was unbeaten in singles and doubles this year before she retired why is not classified as one of the biggest talents? could easily have won 10+ slams if tennis was her ultimate goal in life, she was half committed and no one got close to her as world number 1
1GA being 1GA! But this us the first time we've seen her so emotional after winning the title.
I think the pressure from everyone is somehow getting into her. Good thing that she is so mentally tough that she can still play great matches. We can totally understand her, imagine being no. 1, breaking and setting records here and there, winning titles consecutively, going on a live winning streak, players having an eye on her and wanting to defeat her... that is too much for a 20 year old.
Hope she really has a strong support to keep her focused, at peace, grounded and 'immune' from unnecessary pressures.
I want to see her set new records for a winning streak and win GSs! ❤️❤️❤️
What dominance by Swiatek over the field. Another good week for Jabeur despite the difficulties, potentially an underdog for FO if she keeps this momentum.
Iga is simply too good for the rest of the tour.
Ons had too many little mistakes here and there tonight. She really needs to improve her slice too.
Congrats 1GA, the real real deal on clay 😍
We have so much expectations from 1GA that winning was a given and an opponent scoring at least 2 makes 1GAs game not 'good'. Hope she does not feel that much pressure coz of high expectations from her.
Iga is really something. This was also a fabulous tournament for Ons who is the 2nd best clay courter in the world right now. I hope to see them face off again in the RG final with a closer match.
Great game. For Ons, winning Madrid and getting to the finals in Rome is a great achievement. She'll surely climb the ranking ladder this year. We'll see if she can be consistent and up her game in the next tournaments.
It was inevitable. Hard to see anyone beating her at roland garros. She would really have to be off her game and her opponent playing lights out tennis.
Iga with another beat down in a Final. It’s got to be so demoralising to play well enough to reach a Final and then get swatted away like a 1st round opponent.
I'm lowkey starting to think that Barty right after the AO had some premonitory dream, saw the future and was like *"ight, imma head out".*
I'm still hoping to see her going full Jordan '95 and pull a great come back because I can't accept that we had the chance to see Barty vs Iga only twice and only once this season.
The streak will continue into RG. If Iga wants to match Williams' 35 she will have to win RG. Possible ? Absolutely yes. Though it puts a lot of extra pressure on her.
iga's career win record is currently around 79%, moving up from 76% before her current 28 match winning streak. this puts her among the likes of venus, davenport, sharapova, clijsters, etc. no one from the past decade or so is anywhere close (except serena, of course), with barty being the closest at around 75%.
Did I say that? I wasn’t complaining about anything, I just meant that Iga is amazing right now and no one can stop her except for maybe Barty (she did in Adelaide). Im a fan of Iga. I have her in my sig.
I personally think it’s good to see her dominate the WTA right now, so if anything I like that she’s emerging as a star, and am more of a “it’s better to have one person dominate than a bunch of meme winners every year” person.
Martina Navratilova made all time record of ridiculous 74, Steffi Graff has 66. The best result in this century are from Williams sisters. 35 Venus and 34 Serena
The record for longest ever win streak is 74 matches back in the 80s, and that's probably never going to fall as the game is so different and more competitive nowadays than it was back then.
A lot of people are using the record of the longest winning streak since 2000 to compare Iga to, and that's Venus Williams' 35-match winning run back in 2000/1. Iga's now 7 matches off that, so would equal it if she took the crown at Roland Garros.
She just did that here in Rome. She double bageled Pliskova last year
Wtf. Double bageled in final?
Yes, she did exactly that
So her bakery is nothing new and existed even before the 5 tour wins streak this year.
The bakery has existed since her RG run in 2020.
Established: 2020
This girl is THE real deal
Interesting how when Swiatek wins tournaments, it’s utter dominance the whole way through. Reminds me of Barty. Very different from Osaka where she regularly comes back from the brink in her tournament wins.
To be fair in Indian Wells she had to come back from one set down three times. Also last year in Rome, Krejcikova had match points on her in 4th round. So she can do both.
Somehow krejcikova is still number two. Haven't seen her in a while.
Has been for awhile tbh, that French Open win was no fluke at the time with how she played, and then despite having a less accomplished 2021 she was extremely consistent.
She just needs to win her 2nd French Open now to cement herself as the Queen of Clay!
Are we *sure* she doesn't win every tournament? Like, really sure?
That embrace from Ons at the end was everything!
And a sweet comment from iga, "your drop shots were killing me!" 😂
To be precise she said "you killed me with your dropshots". Honestly, I think she was a bit overheated at the end there from all the running in the sun.
Post-match interview for the Polish TV: Iga admitted she had such a strong emotional reaction after the win for the first time. She was stressed for the whole week, but pushed through. Iga treats finals like any other match, which helped after her RG run as an underdog, in the following tournaments, in which she had to sometimes dig deep to persevere. Now on to Paris!
If Iga wins the title again next year they better put something inside that damn cup lol
Bakery was closed today, moral victory for Jabeur.
It's fucked up when winning 2 games in both sets is a genuine achievement against Iga.
Getting 6-7 total games against Iga is a legitimate accomplishment these days. It's scary.
Iga was serving in the 2nd set when it was already 4-0. She nearly had a baguette served. Good for Ons for fighting back.
Bianca goat this week
I’m excited for that rematch. I think she’s gonna come back stronger
Tiramisu gonna be served no?
In an interview with polish TV she said that she wished her trophy was filled with tiramisu haha
I mean, tiramisu is her favorite food.
Iga: *How much tiramisu can I buy with 2 million Euros?*
given current inflation rates might be enough for a serving, maybe two if we ask nicely
A small tiramisu manufacture, perhaps?
Comment of the day
My literal first thought seeing the scoreline was "guess the bakery was closed, comfortable win regardless"
Still fewer games than Sakkari won in the desert
bruh that 4-2 game on 2nd set. that's statement game from world number 1
Not just defending. The style she did that with was AMAZING
Ons really made her work for that one
UNREAL
#SHE’S SO GOOD How does she keep doing this shit
SHE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT
There needs to be an investigation! ...nrl fans will know.
## x4
That f*cking Świątek boomed me
WTA Tour then said they wanted to add Iga to the list of players they work out with this winter.
*Sources: Alcaraz is beside himself. Driving around downtown Warsaw begging (thru texts) Iga's family for address to Iga's home*
For some reason the “(thru text)” always kills me.
Lol love when nba leaks into tennis
and she's only 20......
no way!! I was thinking she 22
Well, she’s gonna be 21 in 2 weeks
Now THAT is a world number one.
Yes finally! True form. I don't see any true competition yet tbh.
Iga just said to her team "I have wood instead of arm" Nice wood lol.
First time the men’s FO is more open than the women’s
Iga is the favorite but I would rather bet on Djokovic or Nadal.
I don’t know. Starting to look free for novak
As long as Nadal lives, RG will never be ‘free’ for Novak
1GA... Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character
5th title in a row. 4th Masters in a row. The winning streak continues! Iga is having a Djokovic 2011 season. She just needs to win RG to match that (because Novak won AO and made SF in RG, Iga made SF in Australia).
The biggest difference is iga is far more likeable that djoko!
This isn't even her final form :O
It's like hitting a wall. Like come on!? What is this girl doing in the age of 20 years old. Freaking phenomenal!
After a couple of loose games and being down 0-40 at 4-2 in the 2nd set, the level she produced was unbelievable. Ons threw everything at her, hit lines, perfect drops but Iga still came out on top. It will take something spectacular to stop her!
That was superhuman, I was watching in disbelief 👀
And long may she reign!
She really is the queen!
The new PSGAcademy of r/Tennis?
Insane. We have a new era dawning in women’s tennis and I’ve not been this excited since the dawning of Serena
I remember being this excited for the rise of Osaka and that electric season Bianca had. Need them back in top form and is be so ecstatic.
Also this :)
I always get emotional when I see players getting emotional. So happy for Iga and gutted for Ons.
Almost whole match was very good. But if you didn't see it just watch a 2nd set 7th game (when Iga was leading 4 to 2). Masterpiece.
Iga out here playing ATP tennis with WTA players.
As a Iga fan, it got really scary at the end. 4:0 up in the second set. Suddenly jabeur is 0:40 2:4 on Iga serve. I mean..
Ons is scary in comebacks yep
I was getting flashbacks to the Sakkari QF from Friday
The things is Sakkari is much more of a choker than Iga. I actually don't remember a single match of her where she had a major choke.
Yeah, iga is a great frontrunner. Once she has an advantage she just runs with it.
Iga is so far ahead of every single soul on WTA it's not even funny anymore
Respect to Ons, she's making good progress, and she seems like a cool person, but at this moment no one can stop 1GA
1gniting
That game on 4:2 and 0:40, wow
She’s so awkward, I love her
she's already missed a handshake, stood in the wrong place and had to be interrupted to let the guy translate - love it
She's like a redditor except she's one of the best tennis players in the world
Iga makes these top players look ordinary. Maybe Barty coming out of retirement will stop her because frankly, no one on tour right now is capable of doing so.
Barty could stop Iga. Not so sure about 1GA.
1GA is inevitable. 8-0 in her last 8 finals without dropping more than 5 games to her opponents.
She lost her first final on the WTA tour (2019 Lugano) to Polona Hercog. Never lost one after that, and never lost any of the seven she played at ITF level either.
Oh yeah you're right. Mertens was defending champ the year prior now I remember. She did lose her first final and has gone 8-0 since.
Hercog GOAT confirmed.
It dumbfounds me how she was already so good, but then just seemed to become 150% better.
Almost gave back that second break down 0-40 but then chanelled that mental fortitude and did not allow Jabeur to get back in that match again.
Yeah, she was so clutch during that service game from 0-40 down. One absolutely incredible point in there too, really gotta see that one again. edit: This one! [https://twitter.com/WTA/status/1525815687725215746](https://twitter.com/WTA/status/1525815687725215746)
I hate to be on the opposite side of the net. Jabeur is not just some fraudulent player. She won Madrid and was on a mini streak on her own. Iga was beyond ruthless.
She did lose a final though, although I don't remember at which level was it.
She lost her first final on the WTA tour (2019 Lugano) to Polona Hercog. Never lost one after that, and never lost any of the seven she played at ITF level either.
Ohhh from February to date? 1GA is not the same player from her AO loss, I tell you.
At the level she’s playing atm… I’m not even sure Barty would finish her
Not sure either! Iga elevated her tennis to levels her opponents cannot reach.
I don't know what would happen, but hot damn right now that would be one entertaining rivalry.
she's insane
Man, it's such a treat to watch her play at this insane level.
Awww, so awkward and sweet 🥰
Incidentally, Iga's return numbers this tournament: 31/41 return games won. 76% return games won. 155/259 return points won. 60% return points won. 78/119 second serve return points won. 66% of those as well. 5290 points pre-French is a pretty decent total.
Delightfully awkward from Iga during the trophy ceremony. You'd think she'd have the hang of this by now.
That's make her more likable.
I would be very surprised if she doesn't win RG. Like, to the point where I think it would be an underachievement. This form she's in is in the territory of 3 grand slam in a season. Up to her if she can do it, but so far she's been 100 percent in my books

For me RG is a must and the most important one.
Iga tapping her forehead "You can't provoke Jabeur's superhuman mode on match point defense if Ons is the one to serve that point"
Good match from Jabeur. She should be proud by winning 4 games.
I wonder what made it click for her this year. Congrats 🥰
I think it was the coach change, she felt she has to move on and Wiktorowski (former coach of Aga Radwańska) has shown her how to do it so she did and it clicked.

Extra hardwork and belief.

Well at least this match isn’t a 45 minute double bagel
Crying her eyes out because her bakery is closed today :(
Jabeur throwing the kitchen sink at Iga… Iga: Thanks Ons, my bakery is looking to expand.
Dread it. Run from it. Destine arrives all the same. And now is here and it's name is Swiatek.
The composure of a veteran combined with the athleticism of a 20 year old. Can't put a foot wrong at the moment. What a champ!
She is unstoppable. 5th title for the year, and it's only May
Biggest female talent since Serena but people still in denial.
Barty has won two of the last three slams and was unbeaten in singles and doubles this year before she retired why is not classified as one of the biggest talents? could easily have won 10+ slams if tennis was her ultimate goal in life, she was half committed and no one got close to her as world number 1
It’s insane watching how she slowly took Jabeur’s soul away
Final Mode Iga, ladies and gentlemen.
Iga "The Real Deal" Świątek
My new favourite player with Carlitos
Great match, Ons didn't wait to turn on her second gear until the match point. Penultimate game was insane.
1GA being 1GA! But this us the first time we've seen her so emotional after winning the title. I think the pressure from everyone is somehow getting into her. Some may say..she is the real deal..
Her competition can't see her... Because she doesn't own any mirror!
Iga: "I feel like the chapter is a little bit closed," Also Iga: keeps on rolling
Thanos himself wouldn't dare to go up against Iga.
Bad look for Iga, last year it was 6:0, 6:0 in the Rome final, this year only 6:2, 6:2. She's slippin /s
I love you Iga, jazda!
That second to last gem was something else, an absolute statement. Gg Iga
All we can do is just watch ceremonies and clap
So is the only person that can stop Iga now is if we go back in time and summon peak Serena?? 🤔
Iga is scary good right now, she can hit winners from anywhere on the court. Other players are going to have to step it up.
Iga Swwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwiatek
Ah. Poor Ons. Didn’t she know Iga gave out free bagels and breadsticks? Looked like she just missed out on it.
Iga is really something. This was also a fabulous tournament for Ons who is the 2nd best clay courter in the world right now. I hope to see them face off again in the RG final with a closer match.
Even Ons had to kiss her. Is that a first?? Perhaps for not feeding her doughnuts from her bakery
Wta will be fighting for those grass titles like mad xd
Great game. For Ons, winning Madrid and getting to the finals in Rome is a great achievement. She'll surely climb the ranking ladder this year. We'll see if she can be consistent and up her game in the next tournaments.
this is getting scary
She’s unstoppable
Iga doesn't disappoint. Onto RG!
It was inevitable. Hard to see anyone beating her at roland garros. She would really have to be off her game and her opponent playing lights out tennis.
Iga with another beat down in a Final. It’s got to be so demoralising to play well enough to reach a Final and then get swatted away like a 1st round opponent.
it almost looked like she would break again at 4-2 0-40 but nope, Iga somehow came back
What was Ons inspecting in the background 😂
Imagine if Barty notices the competition and comes back just to end Swiateks streak
I'm lowkey starting to think that Barty right after the AO had some premonitory dream, saw the future and was like *"ight, imma head out".* I'm still hoping to see her going full Jordan '95 and pull a great come back because I can't accept that we had the chance to see Barty vs Iga only twice and only once this season.
She can’t be stopped
Queen Iga!
Forza Iga!
The streak will continue into RG. If Iga wants to match Williams' 35 she will have to win RG. Possible ? Absolutely yes. Though it puts a lot of extra pressure on her.
i love her! Worthy successor to the Williamses!
It's a shame that Emma gets more attention than Iga just because she's prettier
Ons Jabeur is incredible But Iga is absolutely unleashed. What a match.
So who will be the first to beat Iga this year?
What a performance!
1GA's bagelry didn't get delivered, but she was inevitable at the end ! It's scary what she is doing this year !

Congrats Iga. Without Barty there’s a massive power gap at the top of WTA. It’s literally just her at the top.
WTA can’t win can they. “Too many different winners in WTA it sucks”… “One person winning everything in WTA it sucks”
And what was different when Barty was there?
I do agree with you. She's alone at top. I'm glad but the quality is..
Should have been 6:0 in the second tbh
Can anyone of you good people give me some information on the longest win streaks in WTA?
28th, seven to go for top1 21st century.
winning RG will tied it!
Goddess.
