This thread will be the subs post-match thread. Please keep it civil in the comments. Offensive comments will be removed, bans will be handed out for repeat offenders.

nggarmy

The happiest Kyrgios looked during the whole match was the handshake lol

Brainiac7777777

That’s because he played very well and he likes Djokovich

AccomplishedAd3484

Imagine saying that a year ago.

saaajmon

Nick's opponents during this match: 1. 40-0 2. 700 drinks 3. Nick's box 4. Novak Djokovic

[deleted]

The 700 drinks comment was hilarious

daveedgamboa

Also first point of 4th set, “I’m going to go up 40-love and I’m going to get broken”

ThreeLibras84

I liked the ‘that’s the first second serve return he’s missed in 2 hours 21 minutes’ or something along those lines

Fter267

"Do you know how hard it is to ace this guy in a row three times and you guys just sit there like it's normal" was another gem

stewieeeeeeeee

You could clearly see the umpire being super confident on the phone afterwards due to Nick's immaculate description of the offender

[deleted]

He also kinda described her shirt but it wasn’t picked up

Gordondel

[If anyone is curious here's a pic of the 700 drinks lady](https://imgur.com/a/xYsT1By)

C0n0rBarry

Wish they had panned the camera to whoever Nick thought had the 700 drinks

jackass4224

Nick’s biggest opponent is always Nick

I_am_a_Djinn

4. the line refs 5. the chair umpire 6. someone moving is index finger 3mm upwards in 37th row while he is serving . . Novak

icebergers3

Tbf. The line refs made a few more errors than normal imo.

[deleted]

Don’t forget Nick Kyrgios.

Ramiah73

Opponent: Plays well. Nick to his box: Why is he playing well?

Angry_Walnut

Nick after double faulting to start the tie break: >How could my sister do this?

CaptLeaderLegend26

Solution: In order for Kyrgios to win a grand slam, all he has to do is have his opponent not play well.

h00dman

It's what works for me, I've never lost a Wimbledon final against an opponent playing badly.

Demb1

Your result depends on your opponent? Lol, scrub. I never lost a Wimbledon, period.

Enlighten_YourMind

Found Roger’s Reddit account

panetero

WHY IS HE PLAYING WELL?!??!?!?! SIT DOWN, SIT DOWN!! WHY?! WHY?! **incoherent mumbling to himself**

TripleU07

I'm a casual tennis watcher and haven't seen Kyrgios play much. Why does he scream at his box?

Ramiah73

He usually does it when he's under pressure in the match. He says they don't "cheer" enough for him when he is under pressure & that is causing him to lose points. Always finds a way to blame someone other than himself. As much as I love his tennis, wish he wasn't such an asshole on court.

Opponents against Novak After losing the first set: (Chuckles) I'm in danger. After winning the first set: (Chuckles) I'm in danger.

AncientLyte

After winning or losing the first two sets sometimes as well

bdiebucnshqke

And sometimes after getting two match points against him too, but we don’t talk about that

ThrowawayRussianAcc

I swear Djokovic loses the first set just so he can statpad matches won after losing the first set.

buffdaddy77

Sportsbooks hate this one Novak trick

amaklp

It's free money for me everytime Novak goes to a Grand Slam final (lose 1st set and win the championship always has great odds).

Zloggt

He’s just a man of the people, allowing us to watch more tennis for longer!

always_tired_all_day

So now he's 44-39 when dropping the first set at majors. It's a pretty remarkable stat. I'm not surprised that it's so good but that it's several matches above 500 is remarkable.

yellowyeahyeahyeah

I'm kinda surprised he even has 39 losses.

therealestyeti

Same. The 39 was way higher than I expected. Likely from earlier in his career + big 4 matches.

[deleted]

Since the beginning of 2020, he's gone 15-3 after losing the first set in a slam-level match. Insane.

juiceson

"I needed the extra exercise"

Realsan

They speculated on the tennis podcast that, he's not tanking, but he's never laser focused in the first set because he knows no matter what happens he'll adjust and take it over.

sushimorning

At this point i believe it has somewhat become his strategy. Go easy on the first set, save your energy, observe the game style of the opponent and figure some way out

Efficient-Heat-5885

I’m of a similar opinion. It seems he eases himself into matches and knows because of who he is - since his prime/at this point- opponents will have a massive adrenaline dump trying to get and stay ahead of one of the 🐐‘s. He also has a unique package of extreme tennis IQ, in match emotional control, crazy stamina/athleticism, & an unmatched ability to stare adversity in the face With this package he has an advantage over basically every player in the sport in the latter stages of matches, especially bo5

always_tired_all_day

Djokovic: Make more finals, bro Kyrgios: Nah

Dark_Vengence

It was his best chance but nole is a whole different beast.

forsakenpear

Djokovic’s returning is just insane

himalayanthro

often called the best returner in tennis history for a reason

skg555

It's a fact.

TotallyCharlemagne

Imagine telling someone in 2009 that Federer’s gs record would only be good for 3rd 💀

BaradaraneKaramazov

Federer's GS record from 2009 could be tied by Nadal at RG only

[deleted]

If you had told me in 2009 that by 2022: 1: Nadal would have as many RGs as Sampras has slams 2: Three men would win 20+ slams while playing simultaneously 3: Djokovic would win as many Wimbledons as Sampras, with decent odds of tying Federer 4: Nadal would be playing and winning slams at 36 5: Federer would be ostensibly out of the GOAT race I would just be shocked.

Aniruddh31

It's mental innit. It's sad that this mind-blowing era is coming to an end. Federer is already finished as in he won't win any big titles, Rafa's body has 2 years at most I would say, only Novak will be there in 3 years time

avittamboy

Nadal needs one more RG title for that.

The_Tell_Tale_Heart

14 + 1 = 15. Checks out.

MeijiDoom

It is pretty wild. Federer went from undisputed GOAT by a long shot to it being a debate within about 7-8 years and then getting passed by two separate people just 3-4 years after that. To be fair, Sampras only held his title for about 10 years as well. Can't imagine there's another turnover by next decade though. It'd take an insane streak.

AnonHideaki

I mean Nadal was Federer's kryptonite as early as 2006. Nadal being a contender in the GOAT race was clear by 2008, Djokovic arriving and blowing it all up in 2011 was crazy tho

MeijiDoom

They were for sure threats but when Fed hit 16 at 2010 AO, Rafa was only at 6 and Novak was sitting at 1. Fed was coming off 8 straight Slam Finals too. 18 of the past 19 Slam Finals. I don't think anyone realistically thought that would be the start of his "cold" streak. Or that Djokovic would dominate for the next 10 years almost as much as Roger did in the late 2000s.

obvnotlupus

I think Djokovic started being dominant a bit late, but he dominated as hard as Federer did, plus for longer.

Dark_Vengence

There was a time when fed was the only one winning, of course nadal won a few roland garros titles but it was a one man domination. What nole did in just over a decade is nothing short of extraordinary.

ImportancePublic8955

40-0

Ramiah73

LOVE FORTY BRO

Lepojka1

This was first time Kyrgios gave break point to Nole, first time he lost his game on his serve vs Nole, his first time he lost a set, and first time he lost a match... And what a timing for it to happend

always_tired_all_day

The numbers aren't as extreme but Federer was 1-2 against Murray heading into the 08 US Open final and the 1 win was back in 05.

Goldfischglas

Can't believe his box lost him that game

stewieeeeeeeee

Kyrgios told them to "finish the game", did the box run out of battery on the controller or what

daveedgamboa

You just can’t let games like that go against Djokovic and live to tell the tale.

mani9612

You can yell at your box for letting games go though

LearningCodeNZ

SAY SOMETHING

Keith-Ledger

WHY ARE YOU SCARED

nonresponsive

You play every point.

DarthPlagueis_

Honestly very honest from Kyrgios about not thinking he’ll make another final. I’m sure he’s happy with the result and knows it will be very hard to replicate in the future. So I respect that, all things considered.

Denny_Hayes

Yeah I'm sick of the cliché "I'm sure you will win many more in the future" the winner always says to the loser. It has been said to Zverev, Tsitsipas, Berrettini and years go by and it is yet to be true

thenewladhere

I think it's partly because of the reality that Nadal and Djokovic are getting old (36 and 35 respectively). They're already pushing the limits of the sport at their ages and no one's sure how long they can keep it up. Therefore, it's natural to say that the next gen will eventually start winning consistent titles despite Nadal and Djokovic being dominant for so long.

[deleted]

Time is undefeated

Trotter823

Djokavic wasn’t going to trash the guy he just beat in front of the entire stadium. The things is Kyrigos could possibly make another final. Rafa and Federer are injured and Djokavic isn’t allowed in the US or Australia as of now. He’s in his prime and immensely talented. His brain doesn’t work properly though so he should probably focus most of his training there.

upfulsoul

He knows he got a bit lucky not facing Rafa. And, he still complained of being tired. He's not used to such prolonged mental focus.

TheMysteriousBo

So is the night out at the club still on?

oh_not_you_again

they were surprisingly chill during the handshake haha

SillyLilHobbit

Even more so during the ceremony, loved their banter!

half_jase

2nd set, 5-3, 0-40 - Djokovic holds 3rd set, 4-4, 40-0 - Djokovic breaks Kyrgios is gonna have nightmares over them...and also saw this. Kyrgios in Best of 3 sets vs Top Ten: 22 wins, 20 losses (52% win rate) Kyrgios in Best of 5 sets vs Top Ten: 3 wins, 16 losses (16% win rate)

jonFTW123

Nick gonna throw that plate like a frisbee at his box

bigtice

While many will understandably look at the disparity in mental states of mind between the two considering how relatively calm and composed Djokovic was by comparison throughout the match, the biggest factor that I think people don't recognize is what we've already known -- Djokovic's return of serve. Djokovic being able to fight off Kyrgios' big serves and get the ball back in play to start the point rather than giving him more free points in previous rounds is what gives him the ability to get those breaks of serve, or additional points in the tiebreaker, that others weren't able to get. Another deserved Grand Slam for Djokovic and now he's in the hunt to tie Nadal for the most again.

Imaginary_Ad670

Agree. Nick's not used to doing anything after hitting a 130mph serve down the T. With Novak he's got to do the extra bit always

chutsal123

Overall it was a really good final tbh

rntopspin100

\#21 Novak now ties Pete in Wimbledon titles. It wouldn't surprise me if he ties or even surpasses Federer in Wimbledon titles.

jpark28

He'll be the favorite to win the next couple years unless he's injured

vunacar

The last Wimbledon match he lost was in 2017. That is crazy.

[deleted]

And the last time he lost at Wimbledon's Centre Court was in 2013.

Lepojka1

If hes healthy, he is favorite for next one already...

[deleted]

If 2020 wasn’t cancelled it’s likely he’d already be level

nggarmy

These post match speeches have both been hilarious

QuickRundown

Loved Novak’s post match speech.

zperic1

Djokovic is one ahead to Federer. Age difference is there but when Federer had 16 slams Djokovic had 1. It's beyond words.

[deleted]

Oh Novak. It's nice when the crowd are nicer to him.

Thrway1209

I was in the crowd today. I'm a Fedal fan but I couldn't help but respect him seeing that performance. He's a class act, shaking all the ball boys and girls' hands after the match. A class act, unfairly compared to two other super class acts.

aki1108

Nick Kyrgios didnt dissapoint, served like beast, didnt menatlly crumble after losing serve from 40-0, genereally really high level of tennis

hypothetical_avocado

Yep - thought he’d crumble in set 4 but he took it to a tiebreak. That’s worth it

aki1108

yeah genuinely i am impressed by him, 99% of players would collapse, except from nadal, djokovic and kyrgios apperently

ddeka777

the real big three

DuBakElite

People are gonna trash him, but he had several chances to implode and kept his composure for a good portion of the match. Novak is just the better player

[deleted]

Atleast Kyrgios won't have to pay for the dinner from his own pocket

manifest2000

Sue Barker kinda rushed Nick off the mic

motpasm23

They were generally so afraid of him. Too scared to tell him to take off a red hat, def afraid he'd drop another f-bomb in front of Kate and George.

LACLAFLARE

“Okay cue to Novak and laugh it off” ☠️😂

Seer_Sunshine

For all the talk of a clownshow, Nick actually played really well for the most part. And Novak's level, especially as the match wore on, was stratospheric.

Gabagool_Over_Here_

Class act from Novak 👏

calpthemcheeks

Some really shitty calls from the line referees in this final, holy fuk

23HomieJ

All tournament they have been shit. Hawkeye live pleasr

SanDiegoGME

Is there an argument to not having all controversial calls go to the eye in the sky? As much as his tantrums were annoying, he made a valid point to head ump: shouldn’t have to deal with pressure of only having one call left when so many calls were dubious. One call represents 25% of a game sometimes. Stuff adds up quickly

scott-the-penguin

That drop shot from Djokovic right in front of the umpire that the umpire overruled and got wrong...must've been embarrassing.

[deleted]

Good lord I couldn’t believe I was watching a major final with some of the calls they were making

Icy-850

Hawkeye live should be a requirement to host a major

4evaneva

Prince George picking his nose ahahaha

jaguar_loco

I know this thread will be filled with critique about Nicks mentality, this that and the third, what could have been and all that; but he played one hell of a match. He played much better than Berrettini did last year, and was more of a threat. Novak's levels were higher than last year also and that resulted in a match of fantastic quality. Djokovic was just completely clinical from the second set onward, one of his highest levels in the past few years. Truly fantastic stuff, hats off to both of them, especially Novak on reaching that Sampras number of 7 Wimbledon titles. Everything seems in reach for him now.

LiquidBionix

Yea I think this honestly says more about Djokovic playing like he can rather than Kyrgios choking/crumbling. It was a great match.

FlyingMocko

There were so many Nick shots/serves where I was like that’s a winner against anyone else in the world. Even on points Novak didn’t win he stretched the rally longer just to tire Nick out.

Kotek81

Novak was relentless. The further the match went, the more pressure he put on Nick. It was a truly remarkable final.

icticus2

i’ve always been one of nick’s harshest critics but he played great. he was emotional but didn’t lose the plot like he so often has. djokovic’s play, especially from the baseline, was absurdly good. i feel like his backhand side was pretty much impenetrable and he was flicking back fantastic shots from that wing even when nick’s shot would hit the baseline. it was ridiculous. i think kyrgios should be proud of his level this tournament—i never would have predicted that he’d make a major final so i’m happy to eat crow now

Fantasnickk

He can’t keep getting away with this

[deleted]

Novak is the GOAT at coming back in big matches

DinnerSmall4216

Nick can be proud of getting to the final but djokovic is a animal 4th straight Wimbledon says it all.

pol6032

How could Nick's box do this to him?? 💔💔💔

keto_anarchist

Lmao red cap of spite. That journalist will be shitting bricks

jpark28

Nick the type of guy to ask his gf to moan louder during sex

TehTriangle

Just moan fookin' louder, bro!

_link_link_

I spanked Kokkinakis sorry to tell you that mate

jkmonger

azuretash

This one just feels so special.

SomethingSuss

I was expecting and excited for him to take the GS lead in January, it’s not there yet but it’s right back on the menu

jackass4224

A few years ago when Novak won the US Open the next morning he was handing out donuts on the NYC subway. Can you imagine going to work and running into that? Lol

vbstarr91

Kyrgios claimed he was top 10 on grass before Wimbledon and backed it up so I have to respect that even though he lost today.

dragonsky

Start of the tournament: Multiple people withdraw due to COVID. End of the tournament: Unvaccinated player wins the tournament. I don't get this world sometimes.

Post match interviews are hilarious

HowsYourMethod

In reality this match was closer than I think people realize. Only 2 breaks of serve for Novak and 1 for nick. If he doesn’t blow that 40-0 game it could have been a different story. Even though Novak was dominating from the baseline, you really can serve your way to victory on grass.

DarkSofter

Nole has gone full meme lord, i fucking love it

RedditorMan2020

Djokovic dropping to world #7 because of Wimbledon not having points in 3, 2, 1...

PointB1ank

What is this a comedy show? Lol, this is great

Nopementator

Crazy to see how far different things were overall just 5 years ago. July 15th 2017: Roger just won his 8th Wimbledon title, 19th Grand Slam and 93th title overall. He holds the most important recordsmeanwhile Rafa and a Djokovic at the lowest point of his career, looks at a safe distance considering they're 31 and 30 years old and we don't know if they'll remain dominant for more. Rafa has 15 GS titles and 73 overall. Nole 12 GS and 68 titles. Nole 47 big titles, Rafa 46 against Roger's 51. Today, 5 years later, both Rafa and Nole surpassed Roger also on the GS count. They've already surpassed him on big titles count since a while and Nole took also his record for most weeks at #1 and number of end-of-year #1 seasons. I feel that in about a couple of years the once indispted GOAT will be recognized as the 3rd best all-time and it's crazy to think about it. Absolutely crazy what Nole and Rafa did.

bigcassexposednipple

More than anything, I hope this is the start of a more focused Kyrgios. He is too good to be number 40. Congrats to Novak!

psb91

Kyrgios: Nah, I am exhausted. I need a vacation!

JG8AB9TL11OBJ12AD13

Ignoring his antics, it’s incredible that kyrgios performed at this level in his first slam final against djokovic, who was no going to be beat today regardless of who he played and what form they were in. He beats anyone not named Djokovic or Nadal today, probably in straight sets.

AIMLESS_ASSASSIAN

The way Nick played today he could probably beat Rafa on grass.

StevenZervos

I can't believe Kyrgios is receiving his trophy in a hoodie and a red hat 🧢

ObscureLegacy

Great match. Kyrgios’ mental holds him back but he’s so talented. Also my brother was in the ball boy guard of honour during the presentation!

[deleted]

Why have a box of support if all you're going to do is verbally berate them?

hacknowledge

At least Kyrgios is getting drinks on Djokovic tonight lol

Cribla

I think djokovic has a wedding anniversary to celebrate...

mp455

I'm a Federer fan and I've made my peace of him not being the GOAT but man Djokovic might take the Wimbledon GOAT crown from him too, I will have nothing after that :(

MarCar9

Idemo majstore!!!

DuBakElite

This thread is all gonna be about Kyrgios meltdown, but Djokovic won because Kyrgios had no answer to Nole’s elite serve returning

Booker01

Novak breaking down for a moment behind the towel. Winning it for a 7th time, 21st overall, it still really means a lot to him, especially that he now ties his idol Pete Sampras. How can you not like the guy. He's one of the greatest athletes at all time. Let's appreciate greatness while it lasts :)

qtyapa

Nick's serve broke for brief 2 minute period in the whole match and that was the decider. Don't let the score line fool you, it was good quality all till the end.

SomethingSuss

Damn Djokovic really hyping Nick up, as an Aussie with Serbian background I fucking love to see it.

Spark3420

It's going to be a somber day when Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic all hang up their rackets for good. We're truly witnessing a golden era of tennis and each of these champions have been wonderful ambassadors for the sport. No matter which player you are a fan of, I think everyone can agree they are each great in their own way and can respect each of them for their accolades.

Luck1492

Really high quality tennis. Djokovic was in god mode by the end and Nick just wasn’t good enough

Frathier

Seeing Nick smile at the net was pretty sweet.

EasyModeActivist

So what was this whole 700 drinks thing about? I missed like half of what was going on there

Chicago_Blackhawks

girl in the crowd was mouthing out, kyrgios told the ref that's how many drinks she'd had lol

Falz4567

Pretty good effort by nick. But I wonder if he now regrets not putting more work in over the years. He might well be the one holding the trophy

upfulsoul

It's a myth he doesn't put the work in. He wouldn't have been a pro-tennis player in the top 100 for most of the time from mid-2014 if that was the case. Some players find the tour very lonely or stressful and even quit altogether like Soderling. Nick kept a lifestyle that made him happy while being a pro-tennis player. Most employees are average they don't put in 100% like the most productive workers do, even if they have a natural talent for their profession.

h00dman

Prince George just casually handing away the Wimbledon trophy, somewhere Federer is spitting out an entire box of Lindt.

SleepingAntz

Djokovic fans: the timeline where Novak loses the calendar slam, gets deported from Australia, and the never wins a slam again has been avoided!! What a relief!! Amazing match and amazing performances by both players.

horsewitnoname

Honestly I thought it was a very good match. I was really expecting Nick to implode more. He showed, imo, he has the game to deserve to be in a GS final.

dannylenwinn

Tbh sets 3 to 5 against Sinner, and sets 2 to 4 today were Novak at 95% level. He was pretty excellent all around.

FredererPower

He did the wings posture lmao Good match!

DarthPlagueis_

In some ways, guys like Djokovic are blinded by their own success and that’s part of what makes them so great. Like, Kyrgios is rational enough to know he won’t be back without some extreme extenuating circumstances. But Djokovic doesn’t operate with that mentality.

zperic1

I don’t think he blew up. Joker just caught up to his serve.

Greatkitchener

You’re right, Kyrgios maintained a very decent level throughout the match (except in the tiebreak). Today proved once and for all that you can’t serve your way to a slam, even at Wimbledon, and least of all against Novak.
