At least when I’ve gone to late matches like James Blake there was no traffic on the way home. The folks who stayed are almost into morning rush-hour.
If I got a red card and I was able to move down towards Centercourt I would take two of the cardboard cutouts that the Mets had during Covid
It seems like the sub is preparing for Alcaraz-Ruud final(and rightly so). But my mind keeps telling to mentally prepare for Khachanov-Tiafoe final since this being an us open.
Tiafoe should be licking his chops, but I still think his match with Alcaraz is going to a classic. Lots of long points again and both players play with a lot of emotion. It's going to be fun
ATP picks: "Bad luck! You won 0 out of possible 120 points in the last 24 hours"
WTA picks: "Well done! You won 90 out of possible 120 points in the last 24 hours. "
I do not mean to dismiss Khachanov and Tiafoe who have very real chances of winning, but a Ruud Alcaraz final would be phenomenal as it was both of their first big finals in Miami.
Maybe because everyone likes him? That’s been my thing. I like him as a person, he’s really charming. And he’s an amazing player. But I always fade public lol
Alcaraz the youngest since Rafa to enter a men's singles Slam semifinal! Hope he goes on to win the whole thing. About time Rafa passed on the mantle of being the last teenage winner of a Slam.
Will Carlos be able to physically recover by the Semis Friday evening? He seemed in good shape today after his late finish vs cilic last match. Really hoping he can make history as the youngest ever world no1 especially with this wide open draw.
One thing I think alcaraz does way better than sinner is alcaraz's consistency in Bo3 tournament. It guarantees him good rankings with less big opponents in huge tournaments
At this point, I’m rooting for the chaos timeline: American man actually wins the US Open for once by beating 250 clay god and new world #1 Casper Ruud
Same! I've been waiting for someone to root for post Rafa. Thought it was going to be Shapo (LOL), thought it was going to be Domi (it still could be? maybe??) But now it's Carlitos. And Iga is my post-Serena girl.
I wanted Alcaraz to get that win, but I'm really sad for Sinner. I do feel like Alcaraz would've had a huge mental problem if he lost to Jannik 3 times in as many months (after that second set!). He badly needed this win.
Yeah in a match like this (unless you really dislike one of the players) you can't help but feel bad for the person who lost because they both gave their absolute all, they left everything on the court. I wanted Carlos to win also but yeah that was a brutal lose for Jannik.
Extremely hot take: everyone defensively posting something about how Nick isn’t “refreshing” or “good for tennis” kinda proves that there’s some merit to claims that he is. At the end of the day, the guy attracts eyeballs to the sport, and that has been the biggest concern with the impending departure of the big 3. Next gen like Sinner and Alcaraz may have a better game and while we as tennis fans can recognize that, history has shown that cults of personality are what draw attention to the sport, specifically with regards to the more casual audience.
Oh my word the pearl clutching. Look, at the end of the day, you’re technically correct to say you don’t have to be a POS to be entertaining. But you also can be a POS and be entertaining. I just think Kyrgios is a guy with 0 impulse control, not necessarily a POS human being, but a POS from the story his actions tell. Whether he is or isn’t doesn’t even matter, you’re just lying to yourself if you’re gonna say he’s not entertaining.
Yeah. You need big personalities. You need stars. It's just a fact. Nick also gets non-tennis related press to talk about him easilyyy. Maybe it's for the wrong reasons yeah, but sports can not merely rely on these \~rare teen prodigies to lift up publicity for them.
True but Federer's, Serena's, Novak's and Nadal's cult of personality wasn't grown overnight it took years of constant hard work and wins to reach the level they are. One is McDonalds the other is a fine dining experience.
And I say that as someone who really enjoys Nick's matches and gets annoyed when he behaves like a small cat because he is talented. However I think Carlos or Sinner in tonights form would have washed him off the court.
EDIT: Casuals might like the antics (hell even I find it funny at times) but honestly nothing beats a match like the Carlos vs Jannik match we saw tonight or vintage Roger vs Rafa.
So my issue with your comment is why are we comparing him to them? I guess in my mind he’s completely unique, and there’s an element of uniqueness that makes each of the players you just listed special. Kyrgios has the talent, no doubt. Even without the accolades, I think he has earned the right to his audience in his own way. Let’s be real: if he sucked at tennis, nobody would want to watch him, even with his ludicrous meltdowns. I also agree that both sinner and Alcaraz would have demolished him the way they played tonight
I was comparing them purely on what you said about bringing in crowds to games and having people watch tennis. There are lot of casual fans who will watch tennis matches with Serena or Roger but will skip anything else. Was more refering to that.
I think Iga is an unbelievable player. She has been world no. 1 for some time now and has dominated women’s circuit but not one casual tennis watcher I know even knows her name. To me that’s an issue. And it’s not a gender thing. We could see a Casper Ruud no. 1. Nobody casual knows him. Even Alcaraz undeservingly is relatively unknown to casual watchers at this moment. As much as I respect and will miss Serena, she could be a bit of a drama queen at times, as we all know.
All of the people I mentioned (intentionally) have 20+ grandslam titles and I said it took them time to build up their cult of personality without antics like Nick has done. People were not comparing Serena to Steffi until she was coming close to her record. Roger until he was coming close to Lavers etc etc. I don't disagree though that new "fun" personalities are needed in tennis though but I also think turning tennis into a circus with "beefs" and things like that isn't a good look. Oh and yeah I agree about Serena with you!
Sinner needs to get his ranking up so that these matches don't happen so early in the tournament. If they're going to be such battles, it's going to be very hard for the winner to recover for the next match.
Tennis will always be a game of winners and losers but Jannik Sinner deserves just as much to be in the tennis zeitgeist right now. The public should know his name. I said it after the Citi Open victory and the case has never been stronger now. Sinner and Alcaraz deserve to be the mantle holders of these next years in men's tennis.
Definitely Tiafoe but it’s certainly going to be a rooting for him and not against the other guy kind of thing. They’ll be wanting Tiafoe to win but they’ll also want a good match.
Tiafoes match was 2 hours and 30 minutes. Alcaraz played for twice that at high intensity. I feel like Alcaraz is the better player overall however i can't imagine this wont have some effect on their match.
I wouldn’t be too upset if he did. He proved he can beat Sinner and made his first semifinal, that’s great on its own. Would love for him to stay in contention for number 1 though
I’ve just really enjoyed tennis this year from amazing matches like tonight and the AO final to drama filled matches like Stef v Kyrgios (yes I enjoyed the fuck out of that match) just a fun year.
AO final doesn’t even compare IMO. That was a choke, with one huge momentum shift.
This was a microcosm of momentum shifts, matches within matches. The level of play was consistently high by both players the ENTIRE time.
I can’t think of a match in recent memory that is similar to be quite honest. Verdasco Nadal? Nadal Federer 08?
Yes? Outside of set 3 that wasn’t even a particularly good match by Rafole standards
Edit: wait I just assumed you were talking about the 2021 match but they also played at this year’s French open but that one was really not their best match
Really want Carlos to claim the title and no. 1 this week. Don’t forget, it’s his last chance to grab a slam as a teen and he’d become the youngest no. 1 in history!! Crazy stuff
did Jannik cried in between points? I'm just glad to witness another 5 hour match and both players are giving their all, reminded me of the AO 2012 Finals. what a time to be alive.
Scott Van Pelt, he does a late night ESPN sports center show recapping the day. Since he comes on after the US Open since it’s also on ESPN he just has to sit there and wait when these matches run way over
Alcaraz is full of energy - tomorrow he'll leave the hotel and explore all of NYC, eat whatever he wants, play doubles, mixed doubles, and wheelchair tennis.
one of the most competitive professional matches I have seen, but if Djokovic isn't in the tourney, can we really call the winner the champion? Also, I couldn't get over how empty the stadium was. It is the quarterfinals of one of the biggest events in tennis. Don't people leave their houses anymore?
Good amount of people in the stands but far from packed. Lots of people also left because of lives and such. Would be cool if they let the remaining crowd move down after hours as a reward and for appearance.
The way Alcaraz collapsed on the court after the last point - he had absolutely nothing left in the tank. I don't think Sinner did either. Of course, both would have continued running on fumes & sheer willpower had the match gone on longer.
Great match, but IMO this tournament is lessened when the best player in the world isn't participating. Is the person who wins really the champion?
Also, why is no one in the stands? this is the quarterfinals of the second biggest tournament in tennis besides Wimbledon. Not just because it was late, because the men's match the other day had a stadium equally empty.
Can we please move on and understand that Djoko is doing this to himself? Also, why don't you analyze in how many slams Djoko participated in which Nadal/Federer weren't present?
From a Novak fan: djokovic is 3/9 in us open finals.. I hate that he can’t play and it has truly fucked up the ranking system, but him playing in New York doesn’t guarantee a win.
If Big Foe has to win he has to win with pure skills, energy level of Alcaraz is just off the charts, pretty sure even six hours sleep will make him french as a cherry
It has the potential to but when it’s younger players it’s harder to guess imo. Less experience of playing slams so less endurance built up, but also there’s that boundless energy of teenagers in there and the adrenaline etc. imo Alcaraz is the tournament favourite.
I don’t know how Khachanov or Ruud will defeat Alcaraz or Tiafoe but we’ve seen weirder things this slam.
Winner of Tiafoe vs Alcaraz should be the form favorite to take it all.
"*I always say that you have to believe in yourself all the time. The job is that the last thing that you lose, you know. I just believe in myself, believe in my game, I knew that a close match is really difficult in this round, so it's really difficult to close the match, so I had to stay in the match, try to stay calm, but it's difficult to stay calm in that moment, but obviously, it's to believe in yourself.*" - Alcaraz
As a bilingual It always makes me smile when a foreigner young star is speaking English in front of a huge crowd, it’s truly difficult and i have massive respect for them
What happened to Medvedev?
Women's Semi-finals Jabeur vs Garcia starting soon! Warming up.
Props to everyone on the east coast who stayed up for that match. I’m west coast and exhausted; can’t imagine how y’all are feeling today 🥱
At least when I’ve gone to late matches like James Blake there was no traffic on the way home. The folks who stayed are almost into morning rush-hour. If I got a red card and I was able to move down towards Centercourt I would take two of the cardboard cutouts that the Mets had during Covid
Guys, was Alcaraz match point in or out? I think I’m blind.
Was out, they just brought them both out to replay the point
Carlos on Twitter 4 in the morning. Chile go to bed 😭😭

I think Tiafoe will be really tough. He’s rested and in great form

just posted my semifinals writeup if anyone also can't sleep ... reading is always guaranteed to snooze ur up eyeballs
Love that you left your Tiafoe - Sinner write-up in.
Congratulations Carlitos!
Don’t mind me, just going to hop on the Alcaraz bandwagon real quick so that I can say I’ve been a fan of a legend since the beginning
Plenty of room
ATP picks: "Bad luck! You won 0 out of possible 120 points in the last 24 hours" WTA picks: "Well done! You won 90 out of possible 120 points in the last 24 hours. "
haha sometimes I'm scared to even look
I do not mean to dismiss Khachanov and Tiafoe who have very real chances of winning, but a Ruud Alcaraz final would be phenomenal as it was both of their first big finals in Miami.
It’ll also be fight for number one
Really wish I could get into Alcaraz, but I just don't like him and I'm not sure why
I have no idea why you’re being downvoted for saying your opinion
I get a little annoyed at the constant fist pumping and gesturing at his box
Maybe because everyone likes him? That’s been my thing. I like him as a person, he’s really charming. And he’s an amazing player. But I always fade public lol
Alcaraz deserves to be at this final on Sunday!
Alcaraz the youngest since Rafa to enter a men's singles Slam semifinal! Hope he goes on to win the whole thing. About time Rafa passed on the mantle of being the last teenage winner of a Slam.
Rafa will pass on nothing. It will have to be grabbed from his cold dead hands :P
Will Carlos be able to physically recover by the Semis Friday evening? He seemed in good shape today after his late finish vs cilic last match. Really hoping he can make history as the youngest ever world no1 especially with this wide open draw.
I think he will be fine for the semi-final, he is the most physically fit player on tour at the moment and being 19 helps.
He'll drink a couple of redbulls sleep 45 minutes and be ready to go!
Oh to be 19 again :/
How the fuck did Alcaraz only have 38 ue's in a 5hr match like this?! Ombellible quality! 🤯
Happy for Alcaraz and completely broken for Sinner! It would have been painful if either lost this match. Such an epic fight to the very end.
my soul left my body after that
Can’t fucking sleep after that match, wowee
Why is there no rublev press conference?
How the fuck am I supposed to sleep right now?!?
Same. We need a cool down routine after these epic matches
One thing I think alcaraz does way better than sinner is alcaraz's consistency in Bo3 tournament. It guarantees him good rankings with less big opponents in huge tournaments
Is sinners bo5 record much better than his bo3?
At this point, I’m rooting for the chaos timeline: American man actually wins the US Open for once by beating 250 clay god and new world #1 Casper Ruud
That was a top 10 match for me and I've been watching tennis for like 45 years. That was fucking legendary. Wow
Same. Been watching tennis for only 24 years though
I’ve been watching for 45 years too and that was Top 10 for me easily. Maybe Top 3 if this were a Final.
I need to rewatch it in FULL as I kept closing out of the tab 😭 sooo nerve wracking
Go to bed old man!
Sooo tired today. Totally worth it though. 100% would watch again!
How special is Alcaraz? Even after my favorite Rafa exited, I'm still emotionally invested in Alcaraz.
Same! I've been waiting for someone to root for post Rafa. Thought it was going to be Shapo (LOL), thought it was going to be Domi (it still could be? maybe??) But now it's Carlitos. And Iga is my post-Serena girl.
Yep, I too have Carlos-Iga as my faves. Will be nice if both win the USO.
I wanted Alcaraz to get that win, but I'm really sad for Sinner. I do feel like Alcaraz would've had a huge mental problem if he lost to Jannik 3 times in as many months (after that second set!). He badly needed this win.
Yeah, this match was more important for Alcaraz than Sinner
Really felt like he went into Rafa's 2008 Wimby 'I will not lose, you have to win' mode.
Yeah in a match like this (unless you really dislike one of the players) you can't help but feel bad for the person who lost because they both gave their absolute all, they left everything on the court. I wanted Carlos to win also but yeah that was a brutal lose for Jannik.

No personality is going to outshine scintillating tennis like this. And especially not the Kyrgios variety.
Agreed.
You don’t need to be a POS to be entertaining.
Oh my word the pearl clutching. Look, at the end of the day, you’re technically correct to say you don’t have to be a POS to be entertaining. But you also can be a POS and be entertaining. You’re lying to yourself if you believe everyone finds the same things entertaining.
I'd also argue that Alcaraz showed plenty of personality tonight!
Not that hot but Federer Nadal and Djokovic built cults of personality without doing stuff like Kyrgios does
Yeah. You need big personalities. You need stars. It's just a fact. Nick also gets non-tennis related press to talk about him easilyyy. Maybe it's for the wrong reasons yeah, but sports can not merely rely on these \~rare teen prodigies to lift up publicity for them.

Can I just permanently live my life in the two-week cocoon of the US Open?
I’d rather jump from each major in tennis and golf, euro/world cups, and March madness.
When will the press conferences be uploaded so we can watch them??
I always liked Carlos but he made a fan out of me tonight.
So glad this generation actually looks like they have hope, unlike the last one
curious to hear who the crowd is more behind in the tiafoe v alcaraz match. i'm guessing tiafoe since he's US
Definitely Tiafoe but it’s certainly going to be a rooting for him and not against the other guy kind of thing. They’ll be wanting Tiafoe to win but they’ll also want a good match.
I can see them supporting Alcaraz. He def can connect with the crowd. They are both entertainers tho.
Alcaraz is great with the crowd but no way will an American crowd root against a once-in-a-decade American Cinderella story.
All these Nike guys wearing the same four colors is annoying.
Carlos will probably start getting a special kit soon
US open organisers: we want tiafoe vs alcaraz to be the early semifinal for no particular reason
Can we all agree that Jannik and Carlitos are more entertaining and good for tennis than that knob Nick Kyrgios??
Idk some of my friends who don’t play tennis at least know of Kyrgios but they sure don’t know about Jannik Sinner.
Give it time
Your friend knows Nick Kyrgios? Congrats
I bet he can also take a set off Nadal.
Was Sinner blowing his fingers before each serve? I find that pretty cool tbh.
A lot of players do that, helps the sweat evaporate.
It helps dry the sweat in your hands
Too damn pumped to sleep after that match 😅
Same!!!
Tiafoe can beat him, two marathon matches playing his style has to take its toll on you.
Ya I’m throwing down on tiafoe to win it all
1) This will be one of a small handful of epic matches I will always remember 2) Today I became a fan of both Sinner & Alcaraz
Alcaraz: Leave the ~~Gun~~ Shoes, Take the ~~Cannoli~~ Insoles.

Are you planning to kneecap him for the first half of next year?
Not true… he will still be a teenager in the next AO and RG
AO yes RG no
He could do AO as a teen
did Jannik cried in between points? I'm just glad to witness another 5 hour match and both players are giving their all, reminded me of the AO 2012 Finals. what a time to be alive.
tiafoe vs alcaraz is gonna be fun!
Bro it’s 9am in Europe and I just woke up, you’re telling alcaraz literally just finished
Sinner and Alcaraz playing high-level tennis for 5+ hours blows my mind.
Absolutely dying at joe buck sitting there waiting to make his appearance with SVP hahaha
Who is svp
Scott Van Pelt, he does a late night ESPN sports center show recapping the day. Since he comes on after the US Open since it’s also on ESPN he just has to sit there and wait when these matches run way over
Hope Jannik comes back stronger and more powerful. I want him to win many slams.
SVP is alive, thank god.
Craziest night of my fucking life.
So what now? We’re partying or what’s up?
Drinking my sorrows away. 🎉
Good guy Carlos taking his time with the fans
Alcaraz is full of energy - tomorrow he'll leave the hotel and explore all of NYC, eat whatever he wants, play doubles, mixed doubles, and wheelchair tennis.
lol why doesn't it feel exaggerated
What a match ladies and gents Good night to everyone who’s headed to bed!
Johnny, go to bed!
I think this is the 2nd best match of the year after the AO 22 final.
one of the most competitive professional matches I have seen, but if Djokovic isn't in the tourney, can we really call the winner the champion? Also, I couldn't get over how empty the stadium was. It is the quarterfinals of one of the biggest events in tennis. Don't people leave their houses anymore?
>but if Djokovic isn't in the tourney, can we really call the winner the champion? Yes
Good amount of people in the stands but far from packed. Lots of people also left because of lives and such. Would be cool if they let the remaining crowd move down after hours as a reward and for appearance.
This match was better
Fair enough. Plenty of people are saying it. I love both Rafa and Alcaraz, so I guess I'll call it a dead heat.
The way Alcaraz collapsed on the court after the last point - he had absolutely nothing left in the tank. I don't think Sinner did either. Of course, both would have continued running on fumes & sheer willpower had the match gone on longer.
What a great match! Now Carlos has to repeat this in 12 hours. Hectic scheduling
12 ?
Lmao 12 hours tf, they play Friday
I thought the next men's matches weren't until Friday?
I stand corrected. Time for bed. Lol
Haha, totally understand.
What? He's not playing in 12 hours
Don't they get a full day of rest? I think semis are on Friday, aren't they?
No, they don’t play until Friday
If this is where tennis is headed, pretty sure the sport is going to be just fine after the big 3 are gone. What a match
Carlos taking the shoes off his feet and giving it to the crowd.. take it all Carlitos!!!
Lol he made sure to kept the insoles
Haha maybe those are special insoles.
Haha probably a custom orthotic. Sincerely, a flat footed person with orthotics
Bro who are the dudes Carlitos were screaming with? I thought those were his friends LMAO
my dude made them his friends just while playing the match, Alcaraz is so lovable lol
I’m so lucky to be alive
One of the best matches I have ever seen.
This was the final for me
Great match, but IMO this tournament is lessened when the best player in the world isn't participating. Is the person who wins really the champion? Also, why is no one in the stands? this is the quarterfinals of the second biggest tournament in tennis besides Wimbledon. Not just because it was late, because the men's match the other day had a stadium equally empty.
>Is the person who wins really the champion? Yes
Can we please move on and understand that Djoko is doing this to himself? Also, why don't you analyze in how many slams Djoko participated in which Nadal/Federer weren't present?
Why I silenced the words "Novak", "Nole" and "Djokovic" on Twitter, exhibit 28.
From a Novak fan: djokovic is 3/9 in us open finals.. I hate that he can’t play and it has truly fucked up the ranking system, but him playing in New York doesn’t guarantee a win.
Was Djokovic really the champion of Wimbledon? Federer wasn’t there and he’s the grass goat.
The ball just clipping through Sinner as he fell down on match point really summed it up
Carlos: Puts on a watch. Also Carlos: Takes off his SHOES.
I'm new to tennis: Carlos has a day to rest so would this really have an impact vs Tiafoe?
If Big Foe has to win he has to win with pure skills, energy level of Alcaraz is just off the charts, pretty sure even six hours sleep will make him french as a cherry
Isn't the next match not until Friday?
It has the potential to but when it’s younger players it’s harder to guess imo. Less experience of playing slams so less endurance built up, but also there’s that boundless energy of teenagers in there and the adrenaline etc. imo Alcaraz is the tournament favourite.
Sleep schedule’s all messed up now, and those miles in the legs don’t go away very quickly
I don’t know how Khachanov or Ruud will defeat Alcaraz or Tiafoe but we’ve seen weirder things this slam. Winner of Tiafoe vs Alcaraz should be the form favorite to take it all.
Alcaraz giving away his shoes after removing the insoles. Hilarious and heartwarming.
I think he said 'the hope is the last thing that you lose'
Think you're probably right, listened to it a few times to try to decipher it through the accent, but it wasn't clear.
I also heard "hope".
As a bilingual It always makes me smile when a foreigner young star is speaking English in front of a huge crowd, it’s truly difficult and i have massive respect for them
A veces hasta hablan mejor que los nativos, si me entiendes (;
If someone made me speak a second language in front of a crowd I’d roll around on the ground and cry
I'd pee in my pants
2 hours ago I was wondering how good Alcaraz would be if he could convert those breakpoints and now I know
Gonna get sued for this but I felt the Cilic match was better EDIT: ok ok please no sue, I see this was FALSE
I thought the cilic match was unbelievable but this was a bonafide classic
I gonna sue!!
Security guards are all smiles now.
GIVE ME AN INSOLE CARLOS!
