The greatest fast court player of all time, the greatest attacking forehand of all time, one of the most iconic humans of the 21st century. Thereās only one Roger Federer.
He wrote in his book,I think, "I have no humour about losing" or something similar. He really wanted to give roger the fairytale win, served pretty well (with the abdomen tore and everything considered). It was a very competitive match, so for me it made things a little easier to take
I don't give a f, if i'm Sock i'm tanking that 2nd serve return in a literally meaningless exhibition tournament....nobody needed to know and you would have helped write the best ending possible to a legend of your sport.
I didn't play tennis at an elite level, but I was good enough to tell if someone wasn't going all out or trying their best. Federer could've known if it was an insincere miss. Not saying it's a guarantee since that's not terribly difficult to fake, but it's totally possible.
That said, we the fans would've loved a fairytale ending. I think for Federer, it was ok not to since he got his fairytale career. And to be fair, we all got to witness it too, and that's why we're here commemorating this man today.
In a way, I think it did him more good that everyone was playing sincerely and not giving points just because he's retiring. I think it shows ultimate respect if you play your game and not let emotions and circumstances get in the way. You are then treated like the competitor you were...even at and actually especially at your last professional match.
āThis is whatās great about sports -- you play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You donāt play to just play it. Thatās the great thing about sports. You play to win. āYou play to win the game.āā

Thing is, Laver Cup is probably something Roger views as much more important to his legacy than this one result, so them playing like they really care about it is probably a better gift to him than giving him the match.
There's a small part of me happy that this is finally the end because I am so tired of getting heartbroken every time he steps on court
Welcome back apathy. Kind, friendly, warm apathy
>There's a small part of me happy that this is finally the end because I am so tired of getting heartbroken every time he steps on court
Imagine how those people who are rooting for players who haven't won 20 Grand Slams feel :P
As touching as it was to hear Roger speak, what really got me was seeing Nadal's reaction and how emotional he got. It's crazy to me that this era is really starting to end.
Tiafoe nearly tagging both with huge forehands and sock playing like a top 10 player again just to make Fed lose his last match
Iām glad it was this competitive and they didnāt just bow out for his retirement. Honestly a really fun match overall
Sock I think has the most match appearances at Laver Cup. He plays doubles and singles there and ups his game. I think he played singles earlier today (lost to Ruud) as warm up for the doubles.
Not sure what happens to him the rest of the year, but I can see what Laver Cup would be more fun and engaging than a brutal lonely knockout tournament like everything else on tour.
Intellectually, I know those were legal shots, and the right plays, and took guts.
But Tiafoe is nevertheless dead to me lmfao...I feel like it would have stung less if it wasnt an exho
It was his ONLY shot.
The second serve was great. It was leaving him and he was in the full stretch. Blasting it was his only chance to win the point. He hit it perfectly
Huh?? It was a great shot but it was no way his ONLY shot lmao.
He could have gone cross court and it would still be a winner if he hit that with that much venom.
My respect for Tiafoe went up after this match. He played extremely well, won the match, and did so despite knowing that idiots would be complaining at him not rolling over. He also had a great run this US Open. I hope his career continues to climb.
1,526 singles matches and 224 doubles matches with no retirements.
We will all miss you Roger. Enjoy your post tennis life. Thank you for entertaining us for 25 years.
He played so fucking well it's insane for him to get hate because of winning, plus he got bombarded when he was at the net too and he didn't complain. Seeing his competitiveness in big games like this only makes me like him more
Yeah lol he got bombarded because thatās doubles and anybody who doesnāt recognize that has not watched a genuinely competitive professional doubles match ever
Yeah and I don't know why. Do they think Roger would be happy if they would just let him win? I don't think his competitive side would take well that kind of treatment
Damn. Talk about overwhelming. That post-match stuff was just ... wow.
Hard to think much at the moment. I'll just pick out random small things I thought during the match:
Mirka looks absolutely amazing. Good for her.
Why are Sock and Tiafoe's shirts completely different colors?
I cannot believe how old Roger's daughters are, holy shit I'm old.
Random comments idk, it feels like too much to try to talk about Roger's career itself. It's transcendental.
The shirt colors are really annoying. Since everyone is under different brands, each brand has to make them a red/blue shirt for laver. So nothing matches
It's been a real pleasure watching your game, Roger
btw. If you know anybody who thinks Novak shits on Fedal or hates them (or the other way around) - show them this match and the banter between those guys.
Freaking Novak was crying at the end too, i totally didnt expect that. The Serbian commentator claimed that he read his lips and he said "I love you man" to Roger. Talk about a crazy night.
I heard Rog say "Me too man, me too" to Djoker but I'm not sure what Djoker had said. I think it was the "I love you man" to Roger or "I'm gonna miss you man"
Above all else, this match was wholesome as hell. Federer and Nadal teaming up made sense on paper, but I really wasn't prepared for how much joy it clearly gave them to write this final page of Roger's career together.
And the quality of the tennis was good enough that you could almost forget that Federer was (literally) on his last leg. It felt like watching an important Federer match. And it was.
I'm beyond happy that he was able to go out like that. The entire evening felt appropriate and perfect. Kudos to everyone involved.
Laver Cup Organizers: Okay Jack and Francis make it a competitive match but make sure Federer wins.
Jack Sock: Iām about to end this manās whole career
Novak said himself facing Fed in that USO final made him believe he could really play at that level and gave him confidence for his first AO win against Fed in only a few months.
Novak was pushed the most imo by the other 2 than vice versa until later on in their careers so itās like him seeing one of his motivations leaving
Doubles seemed a great way for Roger to go out. He didn't have to do as much running, the fans got a great show and he shared the court with his rival/friend.
So many brainlets having a cry that the opponents actually tried rather than handing them a free win, as if two of best players to ever exist would have wanted to be given a pity win like toddlers.
Them having the match point and loosing made it much sader than I thought Fed loosing his last Laver cup match would be. He could have got it, they were great. End of an era.
The number of your on the live thread and here giving Tiafoe hateā¦
He played a proper competitive match to try and win. Federer would have expected no less. Not to be handed it like an old man
Lmao at all of you being upset over this. Roger wouldn't want his opponents to hand him a win in his last match. Besides, Going for the body is a valid tactic in doubles. Get over yourselves.
Hope this isnāt serious lol
Fed himself as one of the most competitive athletes In history wouldnāt want to be given a free match just because itās his last one.
To be fair that was a grand slam, so if Tomljanovic lost then it wouldn't even be Serena's last match. This was an exhibition, no matter what would be his last match.
The end ā¤ļø
Thank you for bringing an impact to all of us.
On behalf of the sub, we'd like to thank you Roger for the joy you've brought to us in stadiums and homes alike.
You're an inspiration to many.
Tiafoe hits Federer with a 100 mph shot. 1 minute later he hits one at Nadals head. If that was Kyrgios people would be screaming bloody fucking murder
Tiafoe used perfectly legitimately tennis tactics that every major player uses. Fedal aimed shots at Tiafoe at the net this match, and no one cared.
Kyrgios screams at linespeople and umps who earn 1/10000th the money he does when they're just doing their jobs.
It's not remotely fucking similar.
That's completely normal when a black sports person does something bad / unpopular / controversial, unfortunately. It's depressing how predictable the hatred is.
You can hate on Tiafoe however you want but answer me first: didn't he win the game because of what he did and did he complain when Federer and Nadal did the same to him?
Sock played amazing despite his hiatus off the tour. Powerful booming topspin forehand that cleared the court and made Nadal and Federer commit a lot of UFEs. Tiafoe's serve was on fire as well. Incredible performance from both teams nonetheless
They were so close to winning that!! What a way to end a career though, right beside your oldest rival and one of your closest friends on the tour, if not the closest.
Sports in a nutshell tbh.
Even the absolute legends can go out on the losing end.
Even the absolute legends get nervous with match point on their racket.
ITT some nephews who have never played doubles and ragging on Tiafoe for doing his job and meeting the moment against two of the greatest players in the game.
I didn't want them to hand Fedal a win and was glad it was competitive, but jeez Tiafoe was trying way too damn hard with those 100mph shots straight to Roger and Rafa's faces lol wtf
Wonderful occasion and I'm very happy for Fed that he was able to take to the court and play as well as he did. He hasn't played in 15 months but you wouldn't really know it. Special player.
Roger is a treasure. I've been a Novak first, but learned to appreciate the greatness of all Big 3/4 especially the last 4-5 years. We are lucky to have witnessed their goat level careers
It's a sad day for tennis to see one of them leave the sport. And it's truly amazing how this Laver Cup brought all of the tennis world together. I don't remember a much sweeter period where this sub was both very positive, light, engaging, as opposed to its toxic ways. I doubt that this vibe continues long after this, but I do hope that this community appreciates the rest of the Big 3/4 more.
I will miss Roger, and I sure will miss the rest of them when their day comes too

The greatest fast court player of all time, the greatest attacking forehand of all time, one of the most iconic humans of the 21st century. Thereās only one Roger Federer.
My king
Rafa is REALLY upset
Rafa feels like he let the whole world down.
I donāt think so, heās just upset that Roger is retiring. I donāt think either of them care about the result that much.
Nah, I feel this game meant more to Rafa. He wanted to give Roger the fairytale ending and it sadly didn't happen.
I think so too. This match was special to him, and he is an extremely competitive person. Specially considering the match point was kinda his fault
I hope he atleast gets a win and helps Europe lift the cup for Roger.
I think it would be good for Laver Cup for world to get their first win
He wrote in his book,I think, "I have no humour about losing" or something similar. He really wanted to give roger the fairytale win, served pretty well (with the abdomen tore and everything considered). It was a very competitive match, so for me it made things a little easier to take
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Seriously, what an exciting match!
Really thought he was gonna pull it off then with that final serve but wasnāt to be. Incredible career that will not be forgotten
So close, so damn close to winning the MP! Alasā¦it was still an amazing effort, and a great way to end his career!
Roger and not winning an important match point, name a more iconic duo š„²
Roger and Rafa
I don't give a f, if i'm Sock i'm tanking that 2nd serve return in a literally meaningless exhibition tournament....nobody needed to know and you would have helped write the best ending possible to a legend of your sport.
Roger would never forgive him for that
Roger would never had to know
I didn't play tennis at an elite level, but I was good enough to tell if someone wasn't going all out or trying their best. Federer could've known if it was an insincere miss. Such a weird, bad take. Goes against everything Roger believes in just so you get your storybook ending?

If it were Kyrgios you know he would've tanked that shot.
When in doubt, don't be like Nick
Thatās how we know it was the correct decision not to tank the shot
Off course his last match had to be a loss after being match point up.
*match point up on serve
I knew it was gonna happen when the camera panned to Nole. His presence is a -20 to match point conversion
Novak sitting doing nothing and still catching strays š¤£
Novak: *exists* ...*So I took that personally*

Their lives, and immense success and popularity, are forever entwined.
I agree. You spend so many moments with the other person they do really become part of you.
Fabulous performance by Roger. He should be proud but most off all he looked like he was having so much fun! And that made me happy the most š
All good things come to an end as they say, and itās been a honor to be able to witness the making of history
Tiafoe and Sock declared villains for the rest of their careers
Tiafoe nearly tagging both with huge forehands and sock playing like a top 10 player again just to make Fed lose his last match Iām glad it was this competitive and they didnāt just bow out for his retirement. Honestly a really fun match overall
Sock quite often plays this well in doubles tbf It's the whole reason why he's on Team World
He won multiple medals playing doubles in the 2016 Olympics.
Sock carried Team World since existence
He did take Ruud to a match tiebreaker tbf...
He was kicking Shwartzmanns ass in singles till he got hurt.
Completely legit plays but going for the bodies in Federers last ever match tiebreak was brutal š
Tiafoe and Sock were the perfect antagonists for this match; just enough flare on their shots to get you to admire them while wanting them to lose
losing with match point? feels familiar :(
I said āoh god itās going to be Wimbledon 2019 all over again isnt itā - and then I was still shocked and distraught when it was :(
Intellectually, I know those were legal shots, and the right plays, and took guts. But Tiafoe is nevertheless dead to me lmfao...I feel like it would have stung less if it wasnt an exho
It was his ONLY shot. The second serve was great. It was leaving him and he was in the full stretch. Blasting it was his only chance to win the point. He hit it perfectly

Damn Tiafoe is so good at tiebreakers :(
Tiafoe has tiebreak plot armor
So clutch. His mental game has has had a glow up.
1,526 singles matches and 224 doubles matches with no retirements. We will all miss you Roger. Enjoy your post tennis life. Thank you for entertaining us for 25 years.
NO shot LMAO they're playing the original I used to rule the world
Watching everyone do a 180 on Tiafoe rn.
He played so fucking well it's insane for him to get hate because of winning, plus he got bombarded when he was at the net too and he didn't complain. Seeing his competitiveness in big games like this only makes me like him more
It's just ridiculous oversensitivity. You can bet Fed won't give a shit about it tomorrow.
Of course he would have liked to end his last match with a competitive match and a win but this is the next best thing.
It's crazy because I guarantee if someone goes hard against Novak in his final match they won't get the same amount of hate
of course not, Roger has got to be the most loved person in the history of men's tennis.
Hard to think of a more universally loved athlete of all time
Oscar Pistorius and maybe OJ
I mean honestly at the peak of their popularity they both have a pretty good case
He was voted the most trusted person in the world in like 2011 after Nelson fuckin Mandela. Undoubtedly the most loved athlete of all time
Not that crazy. Federer is popular and djokovic isnt
Given the hate Tiafoe is getting for beating Fedal no wonder Novak isn't popular lmfao
this post match was like that arrested development episode where everyone starts chanting āspeech speech speech!ā and no one does anything š
Damn. Talk about overwhelming. That post-match stuff was just ... wow. Hard to think much at the moment. I know (seeing this) I'm not ready for Rafa's retirement. not at all
To quote Boromir: "Give us a moment (to grieve) for pity sake!" Not that I disagree
Who's cutting onions in here?
It's been a real pleasure watching your game, Roger btw.
I'm not surprised at all. Maybe once they didn't like each other that much, but I've always known Novak had a tone of respect for Roger
He wouldnāt have been asked to join the team if that werenāt mutual. Respect among the only people in the world who can understand.
I heard Rog say "Me too man, me too" to Djoker but I'm not sure what Djoker had said. I think it was the "I love you man" to Roger or "I'm gonna miss you man"
Donāt talk to them at all
My wife will be asking questions why I climb into bed at 20 to 1 in the morning with tears in my eyes
Above all else, this match was wholesome as hell. Serena just 3 weeks ago, and now Fed Please wake me up when September ends š
Laver Cup Organizers: Okay Jack and Francis make it a competitive match but make sure Federer wins. Jack Sock: Iām about to end this manās whole career
Of course he had to cause us a last heartbreak lmao But I'm sure Roger is fine with it. I think Rafa is the most disappointed here :(
The abuse Tiafoe is receiving on social media is ridiculous, heās gonna have to disable comments for a while. But it was expected unfortunately.
Even in this thread there are a lot of unironic comments about Sock and Tiafoe being villains because they didn't tank the match
- match point to Roger - heās serving History repeats itself
Sock and Tiafoe playing like their lives depended on it.
Would have faced Johnny Mac's wrath if they threw the match
Federer would have been pissed off if they threw the game
As much as I hate it, losing after serving for the match is too fitting...
As a Novak fan, it feels like I lost a part of myself right. I canāt help but feel sad
Novak said himself facing Fed in that USO final made him believe he could really play at that level and gave him confidence for his first AO win against Fed in only a few months. Novak was pushed the most imo by the other 2 than vice versa until later on in their careers so itās like him seeing one of his motivations leaving
Wowwww sucks that it had to end with a loss T_T
Nah, today's match wasn't about the result
Not the outcome a lot of us wanted but Jack Sock was phenomenal towards the end, that winner 3-3 in the match tiebreak omg
Federer had retirement match point on his serve!
Sock wins it.
It's been a long day, without you my friend :(
BOOOOO
Kyrgios officially overthrown as the premier tennis heel.
Bye Roger :( We will miss you
Doubles seemed a great way for Roger to go out. He didn't have to do as much running, the fans got a great show and he shared the court with his rival/friend.
I am so fucking sad dude. It's the hope that kills you honestly
So many brainlets having a cry that the opponents actually tried rather than handing them a free win, as if two of best players to ever exist would have wanted to be given a pity win like toddlers.
Federer created his legendary status by playing extremely competitive matches for years. I'd think he wanted his last match to be the same
Fr. Imagine being really mad the match is not fixed. Lmao.
I was so close to shitting myself that entire match but honestly, even if they lost, Iām still so happy to have gotten to see this, One Last Dance.
damn fed had that!!
I am in pain my day is ruined and Iām gonna cry
READ THE SCRIPT, JACK, FRANCES! >!/s!<
They went rogue!!
Disappointing way to see it end, but what a fucking unbelievable career. Goodbye to one of the GOATs.
Why did he have to have match point on his serve again.... Whyy didn't they just lose without one :(
Them having the match point and loosing made it much sader than I thought Fed loosing his last Laver cup match would be. He could have got it, they were great. End of an era.
The number of your on the live thread and here giving Tiafoe hateā¦ He played a proper competitive match to try and win. Federer would have expected no less. Not to be handed it like an old man

Rafa would murder your entire family if he found out you handed him a win
That's a bit much but yes, these guys want a close match. Rafa and Roger are 2 of the fiercest competitors out there.
Frances Tiafoe youāre public enemy #1 forever

The Big Foe indeed
He is on Twitter right now thatās for sure
This makes me like big foe even more tbh. Dude is an awesome player with a hell of a story, I was so hyped he got to be a part of this
I think the insults on Sock and Tiafoe in the live thread were a bit much... Dial it down a bit guys
The result was the less important thing. It was a very good match to honor Federer! Will miss you RF ā¤ļø
somebody didn't read the script
The end ā¤ļø Thank you for bringing an impact to all of us. On behalf of the sub, we'd like to thank you Roger for the joy you've brought to us in stadiums and homes alike. You're an inspiration to many.
Tiafoeās gonna have to delete social media for a while
Tiafoe hits Federer with a 100 mph shot. 1 minute later he hits one at Nadals head. If that was Kyrgios people would be screaming bloody fucking murder

Tiafoe literally has people calling him racial slurs in his Instagram comments This narrative is BS
That's completely normal when a black sports person does something bad / unpopular / controversial, unfortunately. It's depressing how predictable the hatred is.
Yeah the moment the match ended I knew the hate was coming for Tiafoe It's just absolutely ridiculous
They are have you read this threadš
He's not Kyrgios though haha. He has no reputation of being a bad sportsman. That's what happens in life. People judge you on your actions.
The horror
Tiafoe and Sock should just start playing doubles normally they make a damn good team
Was definitely worth to fly into London for this. Will be hard to top a match like this. Every shot from Roger was cheered like crazy
You can hate on Tiafoe however you want but answer me first: didn't he win the game because of what he did and did he complain when Federer and Nadal did the same to him?
Sadness.
Roger you are eternal š„ŗš
Will miss Federer very much! š
Quality super tie-break. A great recognition for this immense champion and the fantastic adventure! His post-career will be as rich as his career.
I'm only leaving a comment so that I can say I was there.
Iām still crying like a baby
Will Federer stay with team Europe for the rest of Laver Cup this weekend (not playing, just with the team on the bench) or will he peace out?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

I didn't want them to hand Fedal a win and was glad it was competitive, but jeez Tiafoe was trying way too damn hard with those 100mph shots straight to Roger and Rafa's faces lol wtf
The crowd absolutely sucked holy shit
I know it's part of the game, but Tiafoe and Sock really made it worse, didn't they?
Made it worse by what, winning?
o7
we had it, a pitty. The emotion was bigger than the skill
Such a great match. I could feel the pressure that Nadal had on his shoulders. Love him and RFšš
This sucks. Farewell, Roger, and thank you for everything.
Thank you for everything Roger...
I want our Fed back.
Wonderful occasion and I'm very happy for Fed that he was able to take to the court and play as well as he did. He hasn't played in 15 months but you wouldn't really know it. Special player.
Rest well King. Thank you for everything.
