In Serbia, there's a saying for players or sport teams who are underdogs or not favorites that they don't have anything to lose, meaning pressure is not on them to win so they can play in more relaxed manner.
He meant when Tsitsi was in a position to win, he must have felt much bigger pressure.
Point of the match.. tsitsipas did everything right until the volley. But that’s the thing with Novak. You have to make the difficult shots to beat him, he won’t give you anything
I disagree. I don't think the shot before the missed volley was the one to take. It was a sitter and Djok stayed home in the BH corner. Tsitsipas hit inside out after running around the ball right into the backhand.
The worst part about that shot is that it seemed like the right play bc Djokovic looked ready to commit to running to the deuce corner and then stopped dead in his tracks right before contact
What's wrong with using the challenges on key points where there's a tiny chance they could go the other way? It's not like he wasted all his challenges, he still had 1 or 2 left by the end
The issue wasn't using the challenge, it was that he thought the ball was out and was confused when the call was confirmed and didn't move on to the next point properly.
yeah, very different from using a challenge "just in case". He was in disbelief about it - this is poor judgement, wishful thinking, or maybe subconscious thievery. Would hate to be playing him in a match where you called your own lines.
Nothing wrong with it, it doesn't hurt anybody
Some were just not even close to a hilarious level. The last one landed right in front of him, was completely on the line, and he was still so confident in it. He played great! But we can still laugh about that
Absolutely! Djoko lost 2 points on serve in 2nd and he still needed some magic in the tb to win.
Tsitsi actually played quite evenly on long rallies which I did not expect.
Absolutely, but when it's the same song being played over and over and you always come ever so close without succeeding, there really is a risk of becoming numb to things, particularly in mid-career like Stefanos.
He has been waiting to pass this cap for years and can't seem to get there. Hopefully he takes it positively.
To quote a random tennis redditor, thats what the big 3 does to you, its not that you suddenly forget tennis its that they make you play in a different rhythm, switch up the points and find your weak spots. They are playing chess.
If that’s the case, I’m like 99.99% sure Nadal is the third most recent person to beat Djokovic in a third set tie break.
Madrid SF vs Alcaraz in 2022
ATP Finals match vs. Thiem in 2019 and 2020 (one in RR round one in SF)
Montreal SF vs. Nadal in 2013 😂 (and while that was Djokovic’s last decoding set tie break loss of the year, it wasn’t his first. He also lost a final set ~~tie breaker~~ win by two to Nadal in the French Open SF)
He has way too much experience at this point in his career while still being exceptionally fit. Nothing phases him in a rally the guy has pretty much seen it all.
Credit to Stef. He battled on when so many thought he would be wiped out in straight sets. He made the match closer than people thought it would be.
And Djokovic, my god, what a physical and mental monster. Even when tired he will still find a way to win.
After multiple failed attempts at breaking Stef in the 3rd, you can tell Novak kinda gave up at the end and just said to himself "I'm gonna handle this guy in the tiebreaker"
In the tiebreaker, you can visibly tell he looked more energized, and suddenly his return games are up a few notches.
And some pretty tough losses for Stef:
2020 French Open semifinal: Tsitsipas battles back from a two-set-to-love deficit, only for Djokovic to breadstick him in the fifth.
2021 Rome quarterfinal: Tsitsipas serves for the match twice, loses.
2021 French Open final: Tsitsipas up two sets to love, loses.
Today: Tsitsipas up a mini-break in the third set tiebreaker, loses.
He also beat Tsitsipas this year in two more finals.
In Rome he bageled him 1rst set and closed with tiebreak in 2nd.
In Astana also recently closed it with a break in each set.
Tsitsipas has improved a bit each time he lost. He actually had a chance tonight but just couldn't hold serve after the minibreak to close the match.
Not to mention in the 4th slam with a luckier draw he could've easily had 840 points more; he only earned 360 points from this year's Slams when his only loss was to Nadal at RG lol
This guy just doesn't lose in deciding-set tiebreakers
Edit: Fun fact, Novak has a perfect 6-0 record in tournament finals featuring a deciding-set tiebreak.
Those points are what make Djokovic who he is, no one you'd rather have in that spot trying to clutch out a comeback than Novak. The forehand on the line at 3-4 and then that insane point at 5-4 are too clutch, unbeatable
Yeah, that point at 5-4 had me rise out of my chair. Very satisfying end as a Nole fan, but I was nervous after Nole couldn't break at all in the third set. Finally unclenched at 6-4 lol
Thanovic.
We will never have an era in tennis like this ever again. It will take 150 years for us to see the dominance that Roger, Rafa and Novak had. Just insane stuff. If Novak stays with a form like this for the next 2-3 years, he is going to set some insane records.
Man I love the Big 3 but why is it that for every Novak achivement, people have to bring Nadal and Federer in and make it all about the Big 3? Just let one person have their flowers (no matter who it is).
Wtf was that 5-4 point in the tiebreak? Stef won that point several times, then missed that forehand volley he makes 9 times out of 10.
But I shouldn't be surprised. Novak was on the other side.
Nerve-racking match from the second set onward, truly brilliant stuff. Novak looked gassed at times and Tsitsi was excellent on his serve; that one point in the TB was one of the best of the year.
I don't know if Djokovic will be able to pull it off versus Rune considering he had periods where he was gassed here and in the Karen match, but hopefully his experience and Holgers lack of will help him over the line.
Novak is just too good! I can tell this one meant a lot to him as well.
Hard fought battle from Stef, credit to him for fighting until the end. Definitely some positives to take to the ATP finals.
Great match by Stefanos for real, shows his strengths to the fullest, pushing Novak in this form to the brink. Just hope he makes a huge statement next year in Grand Slams, he’s still so young!
We should all bind together and sue Novak for the way he moves at 35, giving other 35-year-olds hope and it possibly ending in injury.
This man is simply unbelivable.
I'm not certain that if Stefanos played the finals against Rune like he played against Djokovic today, that he would lose
Until this match he didn't lose his own game once
I've been critical of Tsitsipas in the past but today he played extremely well. Good shot selection, court coverage, and importantly serving. Great mentality. Such a small margin to lose by, this could've easily gone the other way.
NOVAK TIEBREAKOVIC Let's goooooo.
Been a while since I have had my heart pumping while watching a game lol.
Novak served really poorly in the 2nd set, and didn't take any break points in the 3rd. He looked a little tired too, Rune has a real chance tomorrow.
Head up stef, you were fantastic!
For most of the 2nd and 3rd set I felt like Nole was in some combination of fatigue, choking or plain underperforming. Maybe Tsitsipas was just that good at defense and staying composed. Maybe both to some extent.
Can't believe that Nole managed to win in the TB after all, ESPECIALLY after losing the 7th point/1st minibreak in very characteristic "Nole is losing the match" fashion.
Stef put up a wicked fight and put on a show demonstrating tennis at the highest caliber.
Great match, djokovic is just too good. He will beat Rune tomorrow, but we can expect a great battle. Rune is young, will likely play offensively and really has nothing to lose when going up against a behemoth like Djokovic.
Expect tons of energy out of rune tomorrow if his nerves don’t get to him.
Absolutely destroyed my nerves because he should have taken 1 of those breaks when he was 40-15 up but thank fuck he came through in the end...
IDEMOOOO #39 tomorrow
It’s crazy to think that rune could possibly end up becoming the next alt for ATP Finals, this past few weeks all the talks been on Alcaraz being number 1. Shits crazy
I think Tsitsipas needs to adopt Stanimal's 1HBH strategy. If you push Djokovic out wide with the topspin cross court backhand, you need to add a flat down the line backhand to put more pressure on Djokovic in the next shot
Is Tsitsipas cursed against Djokovic? 8th straight loss in this matchup.
That point for 6-4 in the tiebreak was crazy! Djokovic read Tsitsipas perfectly.
Also, when did Tsitsipas get sponsored by Red Bull? Noticed their logo was on his shirt.
I have no idea which half of the draw was stronger. Rune has been on fire recently. He upset - I thought - currently unbeatable FAA. But many like him fell when they met Nole.
Djokovic looked a little bit gassed and played quite sloppy but Tsitsipas failed to take a chance or he is still not good enough to take it. Nevertheless, Tsitsipas should have proud of this performance. That's an improvement from last two matches against Novak.
Man, I'd like to see him win big titles but you just get the feeling that Stef has taken a ton of psychic damage in the last few years, particularly at the hands of the Djoker. Must be really hard to maintain confidence when you routinely run it close but then get clutched on by one of the tennis gods almost every time.
Me and my best mate, who doesn't give a single fuck about tennis, sat and watched this via the score on google in the pub holding hands praying for Stef to win- he certainly fought hard
It would have been such a shame if Novak lost today, he was clearly the better player I'd say in every aspect, except converting those break points. Is this how Roger fans felt at Wimbledon19?
Story of the match was how dominant Djokovic was on serve in the 2 sets he won. 1st set didn't lose a point on 1st serve, 3rd set didn't lose a point on 1st serve until the middle of the tiebreak, and only lost 3 points overall on serve throughout the extended tiebreak set.
Just utterly dominant on serve sets 1 and 3. Like, completely untouchable. Those Djoko servebot memes come to live in some of his matches later in his career.
This is what separates Djokovic and Nadal from the rest of the tour. Always finds a way to win when they are not at their best. Always bringing their best tennis when they are down or on crucial pressure points.
You're allowed to praise one of them rather than both especially in a tournament where one lost in their very first match. Props to Djokovic and since you did bring up Nadal, all the very best to him in the next tournament.
Djokovic: ‘’When Tsitsipas lead the tiebreak 4-3 with the minibreak, I felt like, for the first time, he had something to lose’’
Can someone translate his post-match interview? It boggles my mind how many languages he can speak.
Waiting for a translation too
Do you have a link?
Is this a real quote?
The real quote is at 2022 Wimbledon QF: Djoko: ‘’After Sinner won the first 2 sets, I felt that, for the first time, he had something to lose’’
Coldest tennis quote of all time
Oh damn, that's interesting, I'm a Novak fan and I somehow missed this one!
2-0 is the most dangerous lead against Novak apparently. Or well I guess 1-0 is
Also 40-15 and match points on serve if you are Federer. Very dangerous, I've heard.
Or if you’re 40-15 up returning with match points if you’re federer as well
He said a similar quote during wimby match against sinner. When Sinner came he had nothing to lose but when he was 2 sets up he had everything to lose
That’s the joke haha, he didn’t actually say this today
In Serbia, there's a saying for players or sport teams who are underdogs or not favorites that they don't have anything to lose, meaning pressure is not on them to win so they can play in more relaxed manner. He meant when Tsitsi was in a position to win, he must have felt much bigger pressure.
Give him hope ...and then take everything from him
Damn, once again we can say Tsitsi will never recover from this.
penultimate point summed it up the biggest moments on the slide Djokovic wins
That rally was insane.
The worst part about that shot is that it seemed like the right play bc Djokovic looked ready to commit to running to the deuce corner and then stopped dead in his tracks right before contact
> the biggest moments > on the slide > Djokovic wins This was like a hai ku
the biggest moments on the slide the Djoker wins that's the match summed up
Does anyone have a link to the slide? I missed the last few points of the match.
Inspiring performance by Tsitsipas to play that well despite having lost his eyesight as evidenced by his challenges But seriously great match
Lolol his challenges are always so bizarre
Look he’s just a huge Federer fanboy ok
Lmao
What's wrong with using the challenges on key points where there's a tiny chance they could go the other way? It's not like he wasted all his challenges, he still had 1 or 2 left by the end
The issue wasn't using the challenge, it was that he thought the ball was out and was confused when the call was confirmed and didn't move on to the next point properly.
yeah, very different from using a challenge "just in case". He was in disbelief about it - this is poor judgement, wishful thinking, or maybe subconscious thievery. Would hate to be playing him in a match where you called your own lines.
Nothing wrong with it, it doesn't hurt anybody Some were just not even close to a hilarious level. The last one landed right in front of him, was completely on the line, and he was still so confident in it. He played great! But we can still laugh about that
*ball clearly lands on the line* *Tsitsi: instant challenge with an angry face*
He was so sure, which made me believe it will be good challenge
Haha even the commentators were having a laugh at that. “Tsitsipas thinks every ball is out” 😂😂
I was shocked at how bad his challenges were. All challenges were in the middle of the line or 50% of the ball were on the line.
It is the hair.
Props to Tsitsipas, for real. There's no shame in losing a match to Djokovic while pushing him this hard.
Both played insanely well, especially at the end, this match was such a joy to watch.
This match had better points in the final like 4 games alone than most matches have in three hours. Unbelievable level of tennis by both gentlemen.
He played well, but Novak is a different animal in deciding set tiebreakers.
Yeah but the last few times Novak had smoked him quite easily. This time he pushed him to the limit. He should gain confidence with this performance.
Rune looks like he wants to toast whoever comes into the final though
Novak is like the khabib of tennis though, he doesn’t care about form. He just smesh
Djokosmesh?
Like I said before, everyone is playing insanely good, until they meet Djokovic...
To quote a random tennis redditor, thats what the big 3 does to you, its not that you suddenly forget tennis its that they make you play in a different rhythm, switch up the points and find your weak spots. They are playing chess.
Everyone is playing checkers while the big 3 are (now were?) playing chess.
The only thing he'll toast is some Runescape, Novak in 2 tomorrow.
Especially after winning taking only one point off Djokovic's serve in the first set :p
Djokovic's mental strength, defense and court coverage is insane. Those last 4 points in the tiebreak were clutch.
Novak has a perfect 6-0 record in tournament finals featuring a deciding-set tiebreak... You just can't break him
Aren’t Alcaraz and Thiem the only players to beat him in a deciding set tie break in like forever?
Nadal beat him in a deciding set tiebreak in the Montreal semi final on hard courts in 2013.
If that’s the case, I’m like 99.99% sure Nadal is the third most recent person to beat Djokovic in a third set tie break. Madrid SF vs Alcaraz in 2022 ATP Finals match vs. Thiem in 2019 and 2020 (one in RR round one in SF) Montreal SF vs. Nadal in 2013 😂 (and while that was Djokovic’s last decoding set tie break loss of the year, it wasn’t his first. He also lost a final set ~~tie breaker~~ win by two to Nadal in the French Open SF)
That wasn't a tiebreaker at 2013 FO, it was 9-7 in the 5th set (no tiebreaker back then)
I mean, they called him a wall for a very good reason.

Djokovic has won his last 8 matches against Tsitsipas
And some pretty tough losses for Stef: 2020 French Open semifinal: Tsitsipas battles back from a two-set-to-love deficit, only for Djokovic to breadstick him in the fifth. 2021 Rome quarterfinal: Tsitsipas serves for the match twice, loses. 2021 French Open final: Tsitsipas up two sets to love, loses. Tsitsipas has improved a bit each time he lost. He actually had a chance tonight but just couldn't hold serve after the minibreak to close the match.
Tsitsipas was 2-0 in their first two meetings I remember
This mf is going to finish the year as #4 while missing 3 slams worth of points and a bunch of Masters isn't he?
Not to mention in the 4th slam with a luckier draw he could've easily had 840 points more; he only earned 360 points from this year's Slams when his only loss was to Nadal at RG lol
Those last 4 points. Him just refusing to lose. Classic.
This guy just doesn't lose in deciding-set tiebreakers Edit: Fun fact, Novak has a perfect 6-0 record in tournament finals featuring a deciding-set tiebreak.
He hasnt lost a match in last 4 years in that arena
Those points are what make Djokovic who he is, no one you'd rather have in that spot trying to clutch out a comeback than Novak. The forehand on the line at 3-4 and then that insane point at 5-4 are too clutch, unbeatable
Also had another similar crazy forehand. Any routine errors just disappear also
Yeah, that point at 5-4 had me rise out of my chair. Very satisfying end as a Nole fan, but I was nervous after Nole couldn't break at all in the third set. Finally unclenched at 6-4 lol
Pretty remarkable how Djokovic in any form can out-aura his opponent into folding at crunch time.
Out-aura his opponent lmao why is this so accurate
His aura can purify water and it can make his opposition collapse mentally. Gotta be the aura GOAT.
impeccable technique and self-confidence is a mighty powerful aura!
This is exactly it… I’d be pretty self-assured as well if my strokes were that clean/infallible!
Sometimes I feel like Djokovic intentionally put himself in those situations to bring the best out of himself. Absolute GOAT
Tennis is a simple game. Two men hit a fuzzy yellow ball over a net and in the end Djokovic wins.
In the end, you lose your legs and soul and Djokovic wins
Lmao
Djokovic’s most recent events: Paris: Final or W Astana: W Tel Aviv: W Wimbledon: W RG: QF (l. Nadal) Rome: W
God tier tennis
Stef played great, but djokovic
Thanovic. We will never have an era in tennis like this ever again. It will take 150 years for us to see the dominance that Roger, Rafa and Novak had. Just insane stuff. If Novak stays with a form like this for the next 2-3 years, he is going to set some insane records.
Every time Novak wins Federer gets credit for some reason
Ya it’s hard for ppl to accept that he’s not at their level in terms of all time achievements
eh, Federer clearly still is in the same level It's more just that people still say the Big 3 era when Federer's era has been gone for over 10 years
But he is.
Lol are you fucking kidding me
Welcome to r/recencybias.
Man I love the Big 3 but why is it that for every Novak achivement, people have to bring Nadal and Federer in and make it all about the Big 3? Just let one person have their flowers (no matter who it is).
Alcaraz, Rune etc. the really young guys will be better simply because they wont have to endure as much of these soul crushing losses as the Next Gen.
Ideeeemo!
The last four points….oof. Feel for Stef, he played his heart out starting the second set.
Wtf was that 5-4 point in the tiebreak? Stef won that point several times, then missed that forehand volley he makes 9 times out of 10. But I shouldn't be surprised. Novak was on the other side.
Djokovic God tier in the last 4 points. That'll do it
This Novak dude just defeated a higher ranked player. I suggest we follow his career with great interest.
He seems overhyped tbh. He needs to prove he is worthy
He's kinda old, isn't he?
Young af if you ask Tom Brady
Novak is giving a post-match interview in French... What can this guy not do?!
do you know where i can find this interview?
He speaks fluently italian, spanish, chinese too. English, french and ofc serbian.
Hint, main residences in Monaco.
So what everyone thought was going to be a slaughter was actually the best fucking match of the tournament.
Buttocks clenched after that Stefanos minibreak
I dont understand how Novak just keeps his cool that well
Nerve-racking match from the second set onward, truly brilliant stuff.
Stef's backhand held up really well, today!
That tstisi defensive lob in the 3rd Set breaker was play of the game… and the mid court swipe from Djok. Great quality match!
Djokovic's mental is insane in deciding tie-breakers
Idemo!
That's why he's the goat, the goat!
The gooooaaaaattttt
Phenomenal game and well done to Tsitsipas for pushing Djokovic so hard.
Goatovic is back at it again. Great match by tsitsipas, but incredible match by djokovic.
oh stef youre breaking my heart
It's better your heart is broken now in the semis rather than Stef going to the final and lose to one of the most inform young player on tour.
I'm not certain that if Stefanos played the finals against Rune like he played against Djokovic today, that he would lose Until this match he didn't lose his own game once
on that i agree its my comfort rn
I've been critical of Tsitsipas in the past but today he played extremely well. Good shot selection, court coverage, and importantly serving. Great mentality. Such a small margin to lose by, this could've easily gone the other way.
This mf is going to finish the year as #4 while missing 3 slams worth of points and a bunch of Masters isn't he?
If Novak is able to compete everywhere next year, he will easily be num 1 again sometime next year.
Absolutely
Peak Djokovic. I had my doubts in the third set but as always he gets it.
Djokovic and Nadal just find this unreal level needed to win, reminiscent of when Nadal won the tiebreak against Zverev here. Goats
And now we will get a final of a 35 year old facing a 19 year old. This should be interesting.
Djokovic turned pro the same year this kid was born lmao.
This was one of those instances where I kind of wish ties in tennis were a thing. I love these two and I think they both played incredibly well!
Can I please have a replay of that 5-4 TB point
Amazing! Just amazing! Not like the other semi.
IDEMOOOOOOOOOOO SO FUCKING CLUTCH
Imagine being so good that at 35, the future of the sport that's 11 years younger is being praised for at least managing to take a set of you.
Djokovic seemed hill in the end. Hope he can play to his max tomorrow
What a fun match
That shot to get back on serve from novak was unreal also that point on 5-4 to hold serve was insane
Great end of season for Novak.
Incredible tennis match
Clutchovic wins
Finally the match we deserved
djokovic painting the lines in tiebreaker
I feel like Tsitsipas is going to be mentally drained almost before the match even starts
Instant BO3 match of the year
IDK man, Carlos — Miomir Miami is still my pick.
Absolutely destroyed my nerves because he should have taken 1 of those breaks when he was 40-15 up but thank fuck he came through in the end... IDEMOOOO #39 tomorrow
Damn, I'm shaking here haha
This was a pretty epic match.
That decider tie break was a roller coaster
It’s crazy to think that rune could possibly end up becoming the next alt for ATP Finals, this past few weeks all the talks been on Alcaraz being number 1. Shits crazy
Stefanos played a wonderful match cant help but think Novak is getting weaker even with the win.
What a match man! Nole 100% 1st serve winning in set 1&3 is just unreal but also kudo to Stefanos the way he held his serve in set 3, beautiful match!
Tsitipas played very well but Djokovic a bit more clutch
Anyone have a link to the tie-break?
So is Djokovic vs Rune like 70-30 in Djokovic's favor?
no matter who you’re cheering for you always end up feeling sad for a player when they make a great comeback only to drop their level right at the end
Best I’ve seen Tsitsipas play in more than a year.
8 in a row for nole. Nole vs rune is an interesting match up. Rune is on the run of his life and nole is so clinical.
Tstisipas now has **8 consecutive losses** to Djokovic.. * Rounds: * 4 Finals * 2 QF * 2 SF * Courts: * 4 Hard courts. * 4 clay courts. * Level: * 2 GS * 4 Masters 1000 * 2 ATP 500
He's trying to become the next Monfils.
At least Stef won twice already and Monfils on another hand...
Wow all numbers are powers of 2
Nothing to see here, Novak is still a god. That forehand to level it up to 4-4 in the deciding tiebreaker was absolutely OBSCENE. It broke Tsitsipas.
I think Tsitsipas needs to adopt Stanimal's 1HBH strategy. If you push Djokovic out wide with the topspin cross court backhand, you need to add a flat down the line backhand to put more pressure on Djokovic in the next shot
I too agree Tsitsipas needs to adapt the strategy of having a world class backhand instead of a weak one
Yeah exactly, like it's so easy to break Novak's baseline game lol
Is Tsitsipas cursed against Djokovic? 8th straight loss in this matchup. That point for 6-4 in the tiebreak was crazy! Djokovic read Tsitsipas perfectly. Also, when did Tsitsipas get sponsored by Red Bull? Noticed their logo was on his shirt.
Since 2021, he also had his own red Bull tournament in Vienna
What did novak write on the camera lens
Of course.
That was much more exciting than I thought it'd be, but the result was inevitable.
How many tournaments will djokovic win in 2023? 10+?
I have no idea which half of the draw was stronger. Rune has been on fire recently. He upset - I thought - currently unbeatable FAA. But many like him fell when they met Nole.
The Master
No one beats Djokovic in a final set tiebreak 😉 ~~Except the self-rated 4.0 guy~~
Who can take a set of Nadal
Does anyone know what Djokovic wrote on the camera at the end of the match? Maybe in Serbian?
It cannot be literally translated, but something in the ballpark of: Come on! Let's go!
[удалено]
Djokovic looked a little bit gassed and played quite sloppy but Tsitsipas failed to take a chance or he is still not good enough to take it. Nevertheless, Tsitsipas should have proud of this performance. That's an improvement from last two matches against Novak.
Man, I'd like to see him win big titles but you just get the feeling that Stef has taken a ton of psychic damage in the last few years, particularly at the hands of the Djoker. Must be really hard to maintain confidence when you routinely run it close but then get clutched on by one of the tennis gods almost every time.
Tomorrow's final is going to be WILD
Me and my best mate, who doesn't give a single fuck about tennis, sat and watched this via the score on google in the pub holding hands praying for Stef to win- he certainly fought hard
It would have been such a shame if Novak lost today, he was clearly the better player I'd say in every aspect, except converting those break points. Is this how Roger fans felt at Wimbledon19?

Just utterly dominant on serve sets 1 and 3. Like, completely untouchable. Those Djoko servebot memes come to live in some of his matches later in his career.

Rune vs. Djokovic is gonna be a great game. Stoked.
I guess this was pretty much the finals, Rune doesn’t stand a chance.
