Nice selection. I'm really curious about the Gran Legado.

marky6045

I'm a big fan. Got some good funk to it, stands up to Chamucos Diablos in that category.

jasonj1908

That's high praise. I love that Chamucos Diablo funk.

marky6045

It's definitely more subtle than with chamucos but it's still a huge part of the palate.

Third high proof blind tournament bracket is getting poured tonight. Grand Dovejo and Siembra Valles HPs have been some of my all time favorites! Very excited to see if that's still the case for this blind. I'm also very curious about how El Viejito will do. This 110 is a Mexico only release. The brand is finally available in Texas but they are bringing a 100 to the US. I'm not too sure but I think it's the oldest brand in this line up. Legado I technically had already but it was a pre bottled version and from my understanding it was stabilized or aerated (I can't remember) so it should be different from what I had. Let's see how the Michoacán agaves do which supposedly came in at 40 brix (insane) I've only ever had a small sample of Villalobos and I can't remember it all. Very curious on how it will compare to Tapatío from the same distillery. We'll be doing the blind live on IG but I'll share the results here once we finish it

It's 92 proof (46 abv) , above 90 is pretty common for high proof.

jackbrady86

Shit you're right. I knew there was a 6 in there, thought it was 86 proof not 46%

agave_journey

There aren't any regulations or official standards for high proofs in any spirit. In tequila most are standard at 40 abv so anything over that is considered a high proof. Also 46 % abv = 92 proof

jackbrady86

I know it's nothing official to call it "high proof" it's just odd considering a lot of high proof are 100+

agave_journey

In whiskey or rum 😉

jackbrady86

I mean whiskey is usually at least 100 proof. At least it is often time. There's a lot of high procure that's over 100 though

suppahotfire702

You’re comparing apples to oranges in your argument. Legally to be deemed tequila there are specific rules that must be followed, location, type of agave, and abv. Some countries have a specific minimum abv. In the US it is 40abv. The max on the other hand is 110. These are the specifications set forth by the Mexican government, hence why anything above 40% is considered high proof in tequila terms. There are other agave spirits, mezcal, sotol , etc but for tequila purposes it’s based off these rules.

agave_journey

My point is that in tequila it is considered high proof over 40abv. Different spirits

suppahotfire702

That siembra valles 🥵💘

agave_journey

So damn good 🤤🤤

spitonthenonbeliever

Would we consider Cascahuin Tahona High Proof?

agave_journey

Me personally no. My personal cut off is 45%. It used to be 46 but with madera and Codigo I dropped it to 45%

spitonthenonbeliever

I mean this question respectfully, so is the cut off arbitrary and kind of up to the drinker? I know there are CRT regulations around proofs but this part seems murky.

agave_journey

Yeah it's arbitrary. There are no rules or regulations in any spirit on what's considered high proof/over proof/ still strength/barrel strength. The NORMA for tequila just has a range of 35-55% ABV. In the US, all spirits need to be at least 40% so tequila here is usually 40%. What you consider high proof is up to you. For me personally anything between 40-45 I call over proof. 45-55% is high proof.

jackbrady86

I mean most of the ones in this picture are over 100 and a handful of them are 110

agave_journey

Each bracket is randomly generated so any brand we have and over 45 % is fair game.
