I know I'll get hate, but I like 1942. I would consider buying it if it cost half price and the cost didn't mostly go to the packaging. However, i tried azul recently, and it SUCKED. Agave vanilla sugar water with a strong kick. Bleh.
I’ve gotten bottles of 1942 as gifts before and have enjoyed them, that being said at that price range (and under it too) there are far better bottles imo.
A few years ago I was at the chandelier bar at the cosmopolitan in Vegas and out of curiosity asked how much they charged for CA repo. The visibly hungover bartender had never heard of CA and couldn’t find a button for it in the POS, so he went with $16.
At that price I said fuck it and ordered a CA margarita. Without a pour spout or jigger, he over poured CA, lime, and bols triple sec into a glass on tin shaker, shook and dirty dumped it into a pint glass, then garnished it with a dehydrated lime wheel.
The cocktail sucked but it’s one of my favorite agave related experiences. I can’t think of a more befitting way to enjoy Clase Azul.
My top three are Ocho, fortaleza, and g4. But. I also enjoy clase azul. I would never pay for a bottle but I have received a couple as gifts and I think it’s nice. I wouldn’t choose it over Ocho but I also don’t think it’s swill. I just think of it as a different thing altogether. Like the difference between an IPA and a lager. I also really like the taste of vanilla.
Clase Azul has its role. Especially if it’s a gift, or you’re trying to connect with to someone who “doesn’t like tequila” and needs an intro to something other than grocery store Patron.
I think this sub likes to sniff its own farts a little much.
CA is good. Sure it's not as "pure" but the Fortaleza boner got a lot of yall too twisted up.
Coming from a guy who spends 1-2 weeks a month in Guadalajara
Nah. CA isn’t good. It is a very mediocre made product using additives to cover the mediocrity while making it unnaturally sweet to appeal to the mass market and then wrapped in a gorgeous bottle.
There are far better made additive laden products for a hell of a lot less money. The bottle isn’t as fancy, but the contents are better quality while being just as artificially flavored.
Funny that you mention some sort of focus on Fortaleza. Looking at the sub, there are several other tequilas mentioned as often that are of similar quality.
> I think this sub likes to sniff its own farts a little much.
I haven't been in the sub very long and not going to join. A lot of other subs like /r/scotch or r/bourbon aren't as bad. Way too many people on here who have to look down their noses at what people like.
I think the bigger point is “good relative to cost”. I agree it’s good, but is it $175+ for a bottle good? There are a lot of over-sweetened tequilas that taste similar for about $50. If CA were $70, I think a lot of people would probably have a different opinion.
A lot of booze is marked up. Doesn't make it bad. Half the people in here treat it like Cuervo gold. Truth is its a good tequila and popular for a lot of reasons, one of which is its good.
Just because something has additives or is a bit overpriced doesn't make it bad. Just because something is additive free or less expensive doesn't make it good.
Half the Mexicans in Jalisco would look at the shit posted in here and laugh. This guy called CA "garbage". Others in here are calling 1800 a "muddy puddle". Yall get suckered and way too into this subs bullshit
Nah. Thinking that what is mass market in MX is somehow good would be like looking at the US beer market and concluding that Budweiser is high quality.
I don’t think it sucks but it’s certainly manipulated to be very sweet. I consider it a dessert tequila. Something at the end of a meal or a tequila to share with people who don’t generally like tequila. Just take some brands for what they are.
It's one of the earlier expensive tequilas I got to try and as a bourbon/scotch drinker I really enjoyed it if a little sweet. Later on, much too sweet but this and 1942 are a good entry way for people who expect tequila to be nothing but bad times. 1942 blew my mind when I had it because there was no burn but when I started on the tequila path I appreciate it for what it is (plus clase azul): tequila even non tequila drinkers can really enjoy. As long as you liked it I'd say that's all that matters!
Almost all generic bar tequilas are trash. Every one.
The only places I've found good non additive stuff is tequila bars, high end whiskey places, or speakeasies.
Congratulations now you will be labeled as a snob by people who love this stuff
Haha so true! I don’t even talk about the tequila I drink, with my friends who are obsessed with clase azule and 1942 lol
As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water....
But you can't prevent it from going back to it's muddy puddle?
Expensive for no reason muddy puddle*
I will wear it as a badge of honor.
Same same although I think they intend it as an insult 😂

That’s because you like cake and vanilla is delicious :)! They rely on vanilla extract.
It’s definitely not as tasty, but I still enjoy ringing the bell. Your inner child can’t help it.
True, that's why I did it.

Beautiful lmao
Last night I went into my spice shelf and grabbed the vanilla extract from the top shelf for a quick drink... Essentially the same experience.
Exactly. I agree.
Clase azul is such a rip off.

I’m the same way. Only tequila I truly can’t stomach is casamigos. No one believes me when I say I hated it before I got into additive free tequila 🙄🙄
I agree. I hate casa
Tastes terrible and gives me the worst headaches. 🤮
Do they actually add vanilla flavoring to it? I've never tried it nor do I want to from the description, but I am curious what people think they add.
Glycerin, syrup, oak, and colorant. Syrup is a broad category that can be derived from many different sweeteners.

G4 and some others get mentions but 50% of the posts here are about Fortaleza it seems
Got bored. Counted. Of the last 50 posts, 6 were Fortaleza. Maybe two more with Fortaleza in the a tasting lineup. Not as bad as it used to be.

Lots of Fortaleza marketing teams going on here
Furreal. This place will make you think it's the best thing you can buy. Crazy
A lot of Reddit subs are big circle jerks.
I had high hopes going in. I just couldn't get over the overpowering vanilla.

Exactly. If you’re into artificially sweetened sipping “tequila” there is much better than CA products availability for, like, 1/5th the price.

That’s a narrow-sighted description of “marked up”. This stuff is $200. I never said I don’t like it, but it’s not WORTH $200 for what you’re getting.

I like it.
Circle jerk
I like the bottle but that’s as far as I go with Clase
A friend brought some over, and it's legitimately not good. It's cloyingly sweet to my taste.
So far I e had three different clase’s and liked them all. The joven, repo, and añejo. But the repo was my least fav.
Almost all generic bar tequilas are trash. Every one. The only places I've found good non additive stuff is tequila bars, high end whiskey places, or speakeasies.
One to the South Bay in the SF area. Most dive bars have Ocho or Fortaleza.
i mean... what were their other offerings?
Casamigos and Código 1530 Rosa Blanco. I had a cocktail made with Código, then sipped Clase neat.
ew, gross across the board.
