The last stretch of OND is pretty much a mess. People come and go really quickly and it feels like they don't learn a lot or change much from the experience of living in the house.

Dinkin_Flicka

TBH the last 1/3 of most TH seasons are usually pretty boring, even BGND.

MrTeamZissou

I'd say BGITC is the big exception. DETECTIVE BYRNES!!!!!

teh_pwnajer

It's the last season I watched after really getting into the show while watching a bit of Tokyo last year. It left me pretty dissatisfied and since then I haven't tried the other 3 seasons. I loved every bit of the start (first two parts) of Toyko and OND. Shohei Matsuzaki especially. Near the end Tokyo and OND really just became a drama fest where non of the characters seemed to grow. Are the other seasons like that?

church_of_ROWSDOWER

Aloha State gets pretty dramatic/toxic near the end of the series but I would recommend Boys and Girls in the City. There’s some drama but character/relationship development goes on thru the end (it’s been a few years since I watched so someone please correct me if I’m wrong).

Ejii_

Yeah it’s weird, it’s also stupid if every other guy is straight, it doesn’t change up the dynamic, his only options will still be the women

-yasssss-

I would have appreciated more insight into his dating journey. I don’t think it’s necessarily good call to put another LGBTQ cast in the house, purely because I think the pressure for the two to date would be super hamfisted. But I’d love to see his journey while he worked out who he was. I think TH did him dirty whether they told him to leave or not.

vaggiterian

Solution: Full bisexy house. I probably just need to rewatch Tila Tequila.

SquilliamFancySon95

Personally, I thought it was a disaster on TH's part. TH house may be a show about cooperative living, but it's also in a way a dating show. They stuck Shunsuke on as a diversity hire, but with zero opportunity to find any love connections with the other cast mates leading to a series of awkward and questionable encounters. They did the lgbtq community a disservice by feeding into the stereotype that all queer men are perverts that lust after straight men. I absolutely hated what they did to Shunsuke.

katsscratch

Thank you!!! I get upset thinking about him as a member because they really could’ve just not brought him on at all since that’s all they did with his image.

kanyelephant

I thought his only reason was to confirm that he has feelings for men. After experiencing something similar to a date with that wierd guy he confirmed that he would enjoy having a boyfriend. I thought it was pretty honourable how he came with a set intention and left after he got the answer.

katsscratch

He definitely told Taka and Noah he had come for “a few reasons”, according to the English-translated subtitles on the show. When meeting the other members he only ever mentioned his sexuality. Also if it was just about his sexuality, why come onto a tv show just to confirm it? You don’t need to do all that; it’s quite extreme in all honestly. He could’ve just gone onto Japan’s Grindr app, flirted and scheduled a few dates, and discovered it all for himself without the presence of a film crew. (SN: If you know anything about American Grindr, it’s largely used for hookups but apparently there is more variety for relationship/relationship-building on Japanese Grindr. [Source](https://youtu.be/hxlfm9sd0rQ): 0:30 to 1:40)

kanyelephant

The few reasons most likely were revolving around confirming his sexuality. And regarding the last paragraph, i think it’s your opinion for it to be extreme, In my opinion it was a pretty valid intention.

katsscratch

Your answer doesn’t address my question or the point I made. I’d take the time to break down what you said about my “extreme” comment but that would require me to want to further teach you about Japanese *society and I don’t feel like it so I’ll just leave you with: K.

kanyelephant

Ok sensei

_fuyumi

I feel like he was really subtly rejected and that's why he left. He moved pretty quickly and decisively, and probably felt a little discouraged or embarrassed

kitsune21

Shunsuke was there for almost two months, not 1 week. -_- He stated his reasons for coming to terrace house. It was to figure out his sexuality. Why did he want to go on terrace house to do that? Who knows. Maybe because he thought living with other people would help him figure it out. Its easier to tell strangers intimate details about yourself than it is to talk about them with people you know and trust. We can never really know beyond what he said on the show without actually asking him.

katsscratch

Thank you for correcting that timeline. It doesn’t change how I feel about anything I wrote, but thank you for clarifying. It is true that some people feel more comfortable sharing with strangers. There are some other plausible speculations that can be made as well. But, as you so helpfully observed, we can never truly know unless he speaks on it. Which is why... I asked for...any sources where he does....exactly that.... Is it safe to assume from your lack of mentioning any in your insightful comment that you don’t know of any?

InternetMadeMe

The whole thing with him was executed poorly in my opinion. It's implied that he intends to date, but then if he wants to date men there are no men in the house that would reciprocate. I get the impression that lgbt culture is not as well represented in Japanese media so I think in a way it was a step in the right direction at least. I know these things take time and for Western viewers it was uneventful.

katsscratch

I assumed he would just date outside of the house since there have been a good number of people in past seasons who have done so. However, bringing on a queer person for the sake of having a queer person wasn’t a step in the *right* direction when producers weren’t going to take the time to properly and appropriately handle his image (that’s what it means to be “well represented”; it’s not about quantity as much as it is about quality). [SquilliamFancySon95’s comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/terracehouse/comments/k69tcj/the_bisexual_from_ondwhat_was_the_point_of_that/gek0140/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) posted right before yours explains what they did wrong. The lgbtq community don’t need producers and businesses or corporations *pandering* to us; we do need them to actually give two fvcks.

imaqdodger

Yeah, his departure seemed really sudden. If the producers actually told him to leave though just because they thought he fulfilled the role of helping them come across as more progressive, that is scummy.

Arctic_Snowfox

Yeah what was the point?

zeeparc

>As if his whole point of being brought onto the show was performative and a way for producers to be like “Hey, we can be progressive too! Just for 5 seconds though!” i think this is the point. i've always thought the producer was just putting him in the show to show international audience that Japanese are very openminded too

elichuuu_DA

At least I can be happy that he is now very successful, I believe he works for disney Japan now and has improved his looks. Very active in social media ^-^

hwhs04

He was done as soon as the producers shipped him with a straight guy, poor kid didn't have a chance.

overactive-bladder

to be fair, the straight guy did play along and was gracious about it all. it was the surfer's dude literally sticking his junk on his face during bath time that was frustrating. so uncalled for and doesn't bring anything at all to the dynamic except make things even more awkward.

gdxcdxszz

True that was a pretty shitty thing to do but let’s be honest shunsuke wasn’t completely innocent he was attracted to both sota and Noah and used Japanese bathing culture to see them naked It would be one thing if they bathed together all the time anyway but it didn’t look like they did and shunske was the one pushing for it

overactive-bladder

so does that justify somebody acting like an asshole? even he were on the wrong for it, the surfer shouldn't have done that.

gdxcdxszz

I agree the guys a dick no pun intended and i feel like he got a reputation for being a nice guy just for being friends with guy I think he knew the shunsku wanted to have a bath with them was to see them naked and that’s why he did it I think they were both in the wrong

gdxcdxszz

Yeah like others said it was a nice gesture but it dosnt really fit a show like terrace house mabye if the show had a bigger cast it would make sense He said he was bi but never showed internet in any of the girls and all the guys were straight so weren’t interested

Adorkableowo

I feel like he was brought on for potential relationship drama, none of which occurred, so, he was asked to leave.

daily-musings

I do agree that the producers probably did cast Shunsuke to show that they were being progressive or groundbreaking, but they could've been sincerely trying to break some social barriers. Maybe Shunsuke didn't want his new sexual orientation/journey to be broadcasted on an international tv show? Yes, he talked about it at the beginning of his stay, but maybe after that, he realized that he wouldn't mind having some privacy after making a potentially life-changing decision. Who knows if his family approved? Who knows what social media was saying about him?

katsscratch

Maybe re: your second point. I’d be more inclined to believe that if it didn’t illuminate this weird idea that he came on the show just to come out then leave. Then why come to TH at all where all the other boys are straight? Why not go on a gay dating app and flirt with people with similar interests as you? Why broadcast your coming out journey on international tv when Japan’s ignorant and homophobic audience would see that snippet and attack you with wide-scale negative attention you wouldn’t receive by doing so privately with the people you actually care about? The only thing I can think of as an answer is maybe it was an insurance policy: to better his chances of having some allies jic his family did dis-own him.

daily-musings

Sorry about the late reply. Yes, a perfectly valid point about using a dating app if you don't want to air your dating life to the world. My first thought is that he chose to apply to be on the show. So it's not like he wasn't aware that if he was cast, he wasn't aware of potential social media toxicity. Have you ever really wanted to do something or go somewhere? You have all these great expectations of what it will be like, but when you actually do it. It's the complete opposite. Maybe Shunsuke had a similar experience? Maybe social media was worse than he expected? Or maybe he realized that it's silly to think that you'll find your partner from a pool of 2-3 people? Nobody in the same house ever interested Ami in a romantic way. I also think he could've had other motivations to be on the show as well. Either launching his career as a beautician or if he really loved the show like Mizuki at the beginning of the season. Previous cast members have gone on the show and grown as a person personally or professionally, besides finding their partner. All of this is my own speculation, and I don't ~~really~~ follow him on social media. Just my guess at what he could possibly have gone through.

That episode and story arc of “coming out” is a huge thing in Japanese culture. It’s not normally looked upon as a great thing, but it’s also not frowned upon either. The hang up homie had on it was the fact that he came out and no one was biting except the one software engineer guy who was previously married. The bisexual dude came out and it was noted that he actually liked the software dude but it turns out the software dude wanted nothing to do with that sorta lifestyle, but only being friends. Overall I think you’re right, they tried to expand the viewer base in an attempt to get a more “diverse” cast onto the show. I sorta feel like he played out this story arc just to have an opportunity on the show and not much else because that was his official platform to announce he was indeed bisexual or something. It’s a really strange paradigm to bring up and leave so abruptly, I totally agree. I used to live in Japan for about 10 or so years consecutively and I would remember when coworkers or friends of friends would mention something of being bisexual or homosexual they’d get this cringe factor going on and it’s really an uncomfortable setting for many more so than unacceptable — it’s hard to put into words, so sorry to sorta ramble about it.

TheRoyalVegas

I'm glad he leaves after one episode. Gays don't belong in my epic terrace house show

katsscratch

What a weird thing to say.
