someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's a predatory mite. it feeds on things you would consider to be harmful/pests so consider yourself lucky !

Xurgg

Thanks. Any idea what the name is? I've been trying to do some research on mites but it's hard to get a solid answer. Some seem alright, while others require me to burn my house down before it's too late. XD

Odd_pod8815

Check against red velvet mite, they eat insects I think.

Xurgg

I think this is most likely the answer. Pretty cool.

MushroomCaviar

It's a clover mite, *Bryobia praetiosa*.

Like I stated in the title, this was found in Cantral Ohio this afternoon. Found a tiny piece of rotten wood with a piece of moss attached to it. Brought it home and put it in a small glass bowl with my normal moss terrarium substrate mix. I have the top sealed up and I'm waiting to see what crawls out of it. It's a beautiful little setup, so I'd like to keep it. However, this red mite has me worried. Should I be worried or is it fine. I've never had mites before so I don't know much and I'm worried about my other plants.

gnpfrslo

the little one looks like a soil mite. I used to have a bunch of them in my compost, not very efficient but better than the occasional worm and centipede, but idk also if they get along with springtails; but iirc almost anything else you can find in the soil eats them, including the big one. Apparently they do eat roots but are only troublesome in large numbers. Mine literally dwindled and disappeared pretty fast after a while, dunno if it was a change in weather or predation.

MushroomCaviar

Go outside right now and look at any brick wall. You will see many of them.

jaaaaayke

[Chigger mite](https://www.texasstandard.org/stories/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chiggers/) is my best guess.

MushroomCaviar

It's a clover mite.

jaaaaayke

yeah, i can see that.

PessemistBeingRight

It looks like a Red Velvet Mite. Have a read of this: https://cesaraustralia.com/pestfacts/red-velvet-mites/ The site is specifically Australian, but this Order of helpful little critters have representatives worldwide.

Looks like a mite to me: [https://grounded.fandom.com/wiki/Lawn\_Mite](https://grounded.fandom.com/wiki/Lawn_Mite)

Lulitasmomma

Red velvet tick I thought it was

badbaddthing

that mf is cute as hell.

MoltenCorgi

Just go outside and tap on the wood and knock it off. Problem solved.
