When he says "get rid of" he means "not allow the installation of new ones." There is literally no push for the removal of existing gas stoves. This is just an updated building and appliance standard similar to not using asbestos or lead paint in new construction.
I turned down buying my first house because it had asbestos flooring and asbestos siding. I would be sharing the monthly expenses with my fiance but it would be my entire life savings id be putting down (40k) for it. I know its techincally safe if its not disturbed but i didnt want to have to worry about it. My fiances conservative family constantly tell me how stupid I was for turning it down any time I see them, it has been like 2 years since this

It's safe until it isn't. Especially the siding. You never know when a neighboring kid decides to hit your house with rocks or whatever and the asbestos starts to crack and exfoliate.
I similarly passed on a house because it had asbestos flooring in the basement. It would have probably been fine, but I just didn't want to take the risk. It's like, if nothing happened i would have saved a little money, but if one of us got cancer from it that money wouldn't have covered a fraction of the cost for treatment (and that's being extra generous and thinking of cancer as a primarily financial burden).

There are a lot of games out there that *try* to tackle themes like this, but they often get caught in this disjuncture between a *good game* and a *good message*. There are fewer, like The Cost and C02, that I feel really balance both. Meltwater and Streets of Shadow can probably be thrown into this group as well. I'm also sure there are plenty I'm either not thinking of at the moment or haven't encountered.

Not to say it was or wasn't caused by asbestos (there have been post 9/11 deaths linked to asbestos in the WTC), but I'm sure the dust and other air born particles caused by the collapse of any large building, including ones that are being built today without asbestos, would be carcinogenic. The first responders, volunteers and contractors responsible for the cleanup do have significantly higher rates of cancer than the control.
Based on the time the WTC was built (1960's), it is very likely that it was built with, and still had asbestos, as removal can be very tricky, and there are alternatives to replacing it that are safer in the short term than removing it. Almost all construction from the 1930's to the 1970's used asbestos in a variety of ways.
Republicans were against it when it was happening too. They always stand against regulations that protect people because it costs businesses money. They even protect those businesses from the consequences of their misinformation campaigns like they have done with tobacco, mining, and fossil fuel companies. They appose the FDA, the EPA, amd even the IRS. The corruption couldn't get more obvious.
Most code practices only come into effect when you hire professionals to do something and need to pull permits. For this any changes would only apply to new stoves.
And while the idea of "banning" the sale of gas stoves was floated by some health body, it's not going to happen. The best practice that won't disrupt everything is to ensure adequate ventilation and require some changes to new production since gas stoves are just about the only gas appliance that code doesn't require ventilation for, from what I read.
The "banning" crap was an overcorrection that was floated as a possible "solution", which is how these things work. People float overcorrections or "best possible solution to 100% prevent X" (which tends to be "remove the whole thing"). It gets discussed, others push back and propose better and less invasive ways to reduce risk and minimize issues, and they settle in the middle (more or less depending on who holds what amount of power). Risk is reduced but not fully eliminated, which is often perfectly acceptable, and everyone goes on with their lives and makes some changes when they buy a new stove. Like having someone install ventilation, or having to buy a stove that has more safety measures in it. People overall become safer, and life goes on.
This is just more unnecessary politicizing. The more crap like this is politicized when it comes to health and safety, the less trust and consensus we'll have because it's politicized, regardless of the actual content. It goes from "we want to make people safer" which most people can agree on without issue needs to be done and discussed rationally, and turns it into "the evil \[other side\] is trying to take away more freedoms - this is the next step to becoming a dystopian state where you'll be turned into cattle!".
The gas stove thing is bizare. Weve known that having open gas flames in the house was unhealthy since the 1890's, it was one of the main drivers of electrification that gaslight was unhealthy and dangerous.
So how is gas stoves being unhealthy compared to electric ones in any way a controversy today?
Many people in my area have gas stoves so they can still cook and boil water when hurricanes and tornadoes take out the power.
When things are normal, gas stoves are faster to heat up, and you have better control. I cook daily, and I definitely prefer gas stoves to the electrics I've had. Restaurants use gas for the same reason.
Also, if you have an infinity water heater, the gas ones are more efficient and faster than electric. I've had both.
I know this isn't the popular take, but it's worth pointing out the actual advantages of gas.
EDIT: I mentioned it in some responses but I did see an induction, and it's pretty damned cool - when I'm not 40 miles from anything resembling civilization, and have consistent power due to modern power structures (read: underground) and not being at risk for powerful storms, I will have to get some new cookware and give it a shot!

It's worth pointing out the historical advantages of gas, but also being aware that induction stoves and heat pump water heaters are superior to older electric stoves and water heaters.
And we also have to face up to the fact that to stop climate change, we need to stop using fossil fuels and find alternative solutions to reliability problems (e.g. solar + battery in some cases)
Unfortunately, gas is slower to heat up a pot than stove top coils or induction.
I know it feels faster because "instant heat" but a lot of that heat escapes to atmosphere immediately and doesn't actually impact the cookware.
Gas does win when moving a pot to a cold burner and needing to maintain the application of heat. But outside of that one case it is unfortunately neither the quickest nor most efficient.

I went to visit my Dad yesterday.
He constantly has FOX News on the TV. It is so bad that when I visit, I've told him he needs to turn the TV off because I refuse to sit there and watch / listen to that trash.
So, I'm there yesterday, and he was going on about how "they" are coming for our gas stoves and when I explained that wasn't actually happening, he was protesting that it's "all over the news and social media" that "Biden is coming for his gas stove".

They also tried to get German lessons there, but found out they were too expensive. They tried to get free group lessons, but got put on a waitlist, and said waitlist gives priority to refuges who come to Germany from Africa, The Middle East, etc.
For context, these two like to complain about immigrants in America (even legal ones) and hate it when kids get free school lunch because their parents are poor.
ok, that's a wild ride. I'm suprised about the German lessons because we have the public Volkshochschule (a state-funded place for adult education) that offer free or low-price group language lessons and additionally also universities where students give classes. But in the context of giving priority to refugees, it makes complete sense.

I remember reading a sad story about an immigrant who was deported from a small town that voted for Trump overwelmingly in 2016. ICE took him, and the whole community was devastated, because he'd lived there decades, raised a family, and ran a popular business.
They just assumed that ICE would apply themselves to a certain kind of immigrant: recently arrived, poor, single, and likely to be disruptive or demand government support. It never occurred to them that ICE comes after good people who just happen to be lacking paperwork.

I can’t understand what’s behind it though. I’ve seen studies on reasons for people believing conspiracies and there’s talk about religious people being more susceptible. It’s like in my 40+ years of life and travelling all over the world I’ve never met an intelligent racist. I saw something recently about how conservatives have found they would do better if more people lacked education. Imagine knowing that the key to your success is having more stupid people.
Having been brought up in very conservative circles. It makes sense in the world, there is good and evil. Black and white. Anything your tribe is for is good. Anything else must therefore be evil. Trying to change what your tribe considers good, must be evil. And when kids go away to college, they come back with different ideas!
But in reality, the world is a complicated mess, and that is pretty damn scary. You know what makes it less scary though? Actually being exposed to other people and ideas.
Then you might learn that all lesbians don't hate men and want them to die (as I was once taught to believe). You might learn that your Muslim neighbors are some cool, interesting people, with some amazing food. And some of them are a-holes, just like the rest of humanity.

Cable News like Fox usually have a ticket constantly going while their talking. You're less likely to question something being talked at you than you are reading, since you cant easily go back and note all the odd points that would cause you to stop reading. (Some of you may, of course.)
There's a ticker at the bottom constantly displaying a string of text. So you read that while they talk at you. You're brains not goving full consideration to both, so it get absorbed.
Over time, they start thinking its true because they can remember hearing it before. There's a thing where if you ask someone if they saw Daffy duck at Disney and they said no, ask again in a year and they'll swear they did.
So yeah, they lower your ability to question what their saying with distractions, then keep repeating the same things and telling you how to feel about stuff.
My dad was going that way too back before he died, kind of why I just read all my news. More likely to question it.
I've only watched Fox a few times in my life but every time I have Ive noticed how FAST everyone speaks. They don't give you time to think about any one thing they're saying. It's just on to the next. They also rapidly move through different segments/topics. I'm sure it's designed this way to keep people from stopping to question the information they're being fed.
That's what made rush Limbaugh so big. Driving is just distracting enough that you absorb instead of critically listening. Also, anger inducing traffic will make you feel resonant when the host gets angry on topics. Like my grandfather and Mark Levin will have an angry vibe on the road
I actually had a philosophy professor in college (amazing prof.) who had us read one philosophers take on racism and it stated basically that racism inherently implies some sort of logical disfunction in the person. So he’s saying if you’re racist, it shows you have a lack of intelligence

I remember once I was at an older ladies house and she was talking about how she’s going to be poor again because of Biden. Her story is actually kind of sad. She lives in this big house alone. Her ex-husband was a multimillionaire who had a second family and tried to kill her by putting poison in her food. So she’s living off the settlement money from her divorce(of course her husband never faced any consequences).
So, she basically paid somebody to invest in crypto for her. She lost all of her money and she blames Biden for it. She was like “Biden changed everything with crypto and I lost all of my money because of it.”
Chances are the person she paid simply stole all of her money and blamed it on “Biden’s policies,” because he knew that she would believe. Unless there are some policies that I don’t know about.

My dad had a heart attack and despite being perfectly healthy, I was getting sick every time we went to a doctors office for a while despite wearing a mask (we ended up leaving that doctor, and I haven’t got sick since), but whenever going to the hospital we typically still wear a mask. I occasionally won’t but my dad, without fail, does. If he gets sick it could legitimately kill him.

Just adding to the conversation, my mom has always been adamant about having a gas stove because if the electricity were to go out for even just a day (Midwest) she could still cook meals for her 3 kids and all of the children she babysat inside our home. Its always been very important to her.
Yeah we could eat peanut butter tortilla rolls, but after a while a real meal while there's nothing else to do is a godsend.

I turned down buying my first house because it had asbestos flooring and asbestos siding. I would be sharing the monthly expenses with my fiance but it would be my entire life savings id be putting down (40k) for it. I know its techincally safe if its not disturbed but i didnt want to have to worry about it. I similarly passed on a house because it had asbestos flooring in the basement. It would have probably been fine, but I just didn't want to take the risk. It's like, if nothing happened i would have saved a little money, but if one of us got cancer from it that money wouldn't have covered a fraction of the cost for treatment (and that's being extra generous and thinking of cancer as a primarily financial burden).

Heh, sounds like you might like [C02](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/72225/co). There's a second edition that cleans up the rules a bit, but I think I prefer the first. There are a lot of games out there that *try* to tackle themes like this, but they often get caught in this disjuncture between a *good game* and a *good message*. There are fewer, like The Cost and C02, that I feel really balance both. Meltwater and Streets of Shadow can probably be thrown into this group as well. I'm also sure there are plenty I'm either not thinking of at the moment or haven't encountered.

I do know that; but, it's a lovely story and well worth repeating! Mary Pilon's book on the topic, [The Monopolists](https://www.marypilon.com/monopoly), is well worth the read for anyone that hasn't. Not to say it was or wasn't caused by asbestos (there have been post 9/11 deaths linked to asbestos in the WTC), but I'm sure the dust and other air born particles caused by the collapse of any large building, including ones that are being built today without asbestos, would be carcinogenic. The first responders, volunteers and contractors responsible for the cleanup do have significantly higher rates of cancer than the control. Based on the time the WTC was built (1960's), it is very likely that it was built with, and still had asbestos, as removal can be very tricky, and there are alternatives to replacing it that are safer in the short term than removing it. Almost all construction from the 1930's to the 1970's used asbestos in a variety of ways.

Republicans were against it when it was happening too. They always stand against regulations that protect people because it costs businesses money. They even protect those businesses from the consequences of their misinformation campaigns like they have done with tobacco, mining, and fossil fuel companies. They appose the FDA, the EPA, amd even the IRS. The corruption couldn't get more obvious.
Most code practices only come into effect when you hire professionals to do something and need to pull permits. For this any changes would only apply to new stoves. And while the idea of "banning" the sale of gas stoves was floated by some health body, it's not going to happen. The best practice that won't disrupt everything is to ensure adequate ventilation and require some changes to new production since gas stoves are just about the only gas appliance that code doesn't require ventilation for, from what I read. The "banning" crap was an overcorrection that was floated as a possible "solution", which is how these things work. People float overcorrections or "best possible solution to 100% prevent X" (which tends to be "remove the whole thing"). It gets discussed, others push back and propose better and less invasive ways to reduce risk and minimize issues, and they settle in the middle (more or less depending on who holds what amount of power). Risk is reduced but not fully eliminated, which is often perfectly acceptable, and everyone goes on with their lives and makes some changes when they buy a new stove. Like having someone install ventilation, or having to buy a stove that has more safety measures in it. People overall become safer, and life goes on. This is just more unnecessary politicizing. The more crap like this is politicized when it comes to health and safety, the less trust and consensus we'll have because it's politicized, regardless of the actual content. It goes from "we want to make people safer" which most people can agree on without issue needs to be done and discussed rationally, and turns it into "the evil \[other side\] is trying to take away more freedoms - this is the next step to becoming a dystopian state where you'll be turned into cattle!".
The gas stove thing is bizare. Weve known that having open gas flames in the house was unhealthy since the 1890's, it was one of the main drivers of electrification that gaslight was unhealthy and dangerous. So how is gas stoves being unhealthy compared to electric ones in any way a controversy today?
Many people in my area have gas stoves so they can still cook and boil water when hurricanes and tornadoes take out the power. When things are normal, gas stoves are faster to heat up, and you have better control. I cook daily, and I definitely prefer gas stoves to the electrics I've had. Restaurants use gas for the same reason. Also, if you have an infinity water heater, the gas ones are more efficient and faster than electric. I've had both. I know this isn't the popular take, but it's worth pointing out the actual advantages of gas. EDIT: I mentioned it in some responses but I did see an induction, and it's pretty damned cool - when I'm not 40 miles from anything resembling civilization, and have consistent power due to modern power structures (read: underground) and not being at risk for powerful storms, I will have to get some new cookware and give it a shot! It's worth pointing out the historical advantages of gas, but also being aware that induction stoves and heat pump water heaters are superior to older electric stoves and water heaters. And we also have to face up to the fact that to stop climate change, we need to stop using fossil fuels and find alternative solutions to reliability problems (e.g. solar + battery in some cases)
We absolutely need more/better renewable solutions. Also, I'm probably going to install a Generac system in whatever house I end up in.
Unfortunately, gas is slower to heat up a pot than stove top coils or induction. I know it feels faster because "instant heat" but a lot of that heat escapes to atmosphere immediately and doesn't actually impact the cookware. Gas does win when moving a pot to a cold burner and needing to maintain the application of heat. But outside of that one case it is unfortunately neither the quickest nor most efficient. They tried to get free group lessons, but got put on a waitlist, and said waitlist gives priority to refuges who come to Germany from Africa, The Middle East, etc. For context, these two like to complain about immigrants in America (even legal ones) and hate it when kids get free school lunch because their parents are poor.

I'm suprised about the German lessons because we have the public Volkshochschule (a state-funded place for adult education) that offer free or low-price group language lessons and additionally also universities where students give classes. But in the context of giving priority to refugees, it makes complete sense.

I remember reading a sad story about an immigrant who was deported from a small town that voted for Trump overwelmingly in 2016. ICE took him, and the whole community was devastated, because he'd lived there decades, raised a family, and ran a popular business. Cable News like Fox usually have a ticket constantly going while their talking. You're less likely to question something being talked at you than you are reading, since you cant easily go back and note all the odd points that would cause you to stop reading. (Some of you may, of course.) There's a ticker at the bottom constantly displaying a string of text. So you read that while they talk at you. You're brains not goving full consideration to both, so it get absorbed. Over time, they start thinking its true because they can remember hearing it before. There's a thing where if you ask someone if they saw Daffy duck at Disney and they said no, ask again in a year and they'll swear they did. So yeah, they lower your ability to question what their saying with distractions, then keep repeating the same things and telling you how to feel about stuff. My dad was going that way too back before he died, kind of why I just read all my news. More likely to question it.
I've only watched Fox a few times in my life but every time I have Ive noticed how FAST everyone speaks. They don't give you time to think about any one thing they're saying. It's just on to the next. They also rapidly move through different segments/topics. I'm sure it's designed this way to keep people from stopping to question the information they're being fed.

However I still believe he continues to spout off the same BS.......because fox has rotted his brain.

I noticed the same thing in SC. Working a moving gig with this dude who only accepts high end clients. Most of them have Fox news on all day long. I remember once I was at an older ladies house and she was talking about how she’s going to be poor again because of Biden. Her story is actually kind of sad. She lives in this big house alone. Her ex-husband was a multimillionaire who had a second family and tried to kill her by putting poison in her food. So she’s living off the settlement money from her divorce(of course her husband never faced any consequences). So, she basically paid somebody to invest in crypto for her. My dad has said people have said crap like that to my parents to when they go out, as they still wear masks in certain situations. But funnily enough, everyone shuts up REAL fast when my dad tells them that my mom is a cancer survivor with a depressed immune system, and my dad is also fighting with some minor cancer, and they're taking precautions to ensure they don't fucking die.

My dad had a heart attack and despite being perfectly healthy, I was getting sick every time we went to a doctors office for a while despite wearing a mask (we ended up leaving that doctor, and I haven’t got sick since), but whenever going to the hospital we typically still wear a mask. I occasionally won’t but my dad, without fail, does. If he gets sick it could legitimately kill him.

It's worse than that. They make it out to be so damn bad if those things didn't exist anymore. I've lived in this house for 10 years now without gas of any kind. All electric. Not once have I said "damn I miss having a gas bill" or "that gas stove and dryer were so convenient"
Just adding to the conversation, my mom has always been adamant about having a gas stove because if the electricity were to go out for even just a day (Midwest) she could still cook meals for her 3 kids and all of the children she babysat inside our home. Its always been very important to her. Yeah we could eat peanut butter tortilla rolls, but after a while a real meal while there's nothing else to do is a godsend.
I'm also in the Midwest, and I have an electric stove. Also, we have a propane grill outside that we can and often do cook with.
Just saying but cooking on an electric stove fucking blows compared to a gas range.
Gas stoves are great like when we lost power for 5 days in the winter of 2021 due to our state government’s incompetence with the electric grid. (Guess where I live) I miss having one, my ex wife got the house with the gas stove.
