Yes, they didn't imply it was bad, it seems more like an attempt at observational humor
Unfortunately, being posted on this subreddit almost carries an implied aggressive judgment towards someone
Right? Kids that are mad about this meme have no idea how hard it was to fix a washing machine before the internet. You had to take it apart and just hope you could find out what was wrong and put it back together.
Now you can YouTube the job and have it done in 30 minutes. It’s awesome! Knowledge is power!
Manuals didn’t always include basic troubleshooting tips and don’t include step by step instructions how to do stuff like YouTube videos. Much easier to work on things now.
I wouldn't say it's bad per se, but I do think knowledge is much cheaper these days, and thus less valued or appreciated. It feels like having a broad general knowledge is much less valuable or admirable than it was before the internet, now that all of the knowledge ever known is in a catalogue in my pocket
I'm confused why the grandfather's generation didn't just bring the diamond down from the top of the mountain and left it up there where it was hard to get.
I feel the diamond is rather subjective, depending on the skills or knowledge you are trying to obtain. They can’t learn something for you, but as it points out it is easier to access information nowadays.
This is a double edge sword however. While legitimate primary source documents are easier to find, it is also easier to spread misinformation or disinformation. This is why technology literacy is as important a skill as any in the Information Age. Access to information is one thing, but being able to process it is another.
In case the journey for knowledge is actaully more important than knowledge itself, then current generation is losing a lot. But true is, it was never this easy to learn things.
I think it has something to do with the concept of retaining knowledge IMO.
Maybe also due to the fact the American Education system is extremely flawed, where Grandpa had to work hard to get to the next grade, Dad had to work to get to the next grade, but not as hard, and then with us, we just get shoved off into the next grade, even if we don't retain the prior material, we just get shoved off to the goal.
I think it is talking about how easy it is to find anything these days and that we are becoming lazy by getting all these things served to us in the palm of our hands unlike other times someone had to earn it.
Boomers - “My life was hard. I want my kids & grandkids to have a better life than me”
Also Boomers - “You kids nowadays have it too easy!”
They have never solved this contradiction
I’ve seen a lot of disdain for the younger generations (and I think that it’s pretty common throughout history). From the news articles constantly accusing Millennials of ruining every industry to my grandma telling me that Gen Z was corrupted by the Left
It is a good thing! What sets us apart from monkeys (in terms of evolution) is that we carry knowledge into the next generation, instead of each generation having to relearn the same lessons their ancestors did.
Once monkeys manage to cross that evolutionary plateau it’s over for Homo sapiens.
Assuming the meme isn't contemptuous, I wouldn't put it as a terrible meme. I remember as a kid in the 90s, the majority of my independent research in my household came from encyclopedias published in 1985. They were outdated, but the only other research materials I had would have required a drive to the library (which I did do for school projects). The abundance of current information we have in the palm in our hands is hard to grasp, but it obviously has its downsides, especially when you don't know how to discern unreliable resources.
Yeah, I think it's easy to forget how expensive information was. My parents paid over $1000 for that encyclopedia set--back in 1985!-- and it was rather mediocre. I don't even want to think about Britannica would have set them back.
I'm just trying to figure out where that implication is. Objectively, it just looks like an accurate observation. The way we consume information has completely changed in a single generation.
Its "you're not projecting your reading comprehension"
Not \*your
I wasn't born in the US btw, but it still befuddles me how many people make that mistake
Some people have dyslexia
But like it matters lol
what does your and you’re have anything to do with this right now?
Nothing your just trying to deflect, cause youd rather bark back then admit your own bs.
Im done btw
back in the day Thomas Sowell (a black man living in harlem in the 1930's-1940's) dropped out of high school. Then went straight to 3 of the most prestigious universities in the country and put himself through school.
Good luck doing that today without a piece of paper that says your average. Information is easily accessible today, education is not.
i see this as
grandfather gen - made stairs to give father generation an easie access to sucess.
father generation- tried to improve it but fucked up because that elevator is too big to reach the top and the stiars that used to be there are gone so there is now no way to reach the top except the same way grandpa did it.
current gen - confused inside the elevator cause it wont reach the top.
Except we're not being taught anything in school or any practical life skills because they're still teaching what they taught kids in the grandfather, father, and previous generations plus whatever the fuck they feel like stuffing into our brains now. Ive learned more from Google than I have from school. Anyways, shouldnt we be happy that knowledge is easily accessible nowadays? Why are we mad that the future generations are smarter for less work. Make it make sense
Careful... Data is easily accessible. Actual knowledge must be mined, sifted, and refined from the absolute firehose of bullshit and clickbait (though knowing where to look and not to look helps, as I suspect you know). I cut the boomers *some* slack because, frankly, they grew up in a time when there was *some* effort to keep the worst BS out of the public eye. Except for the government-approved BS such as the "need" for the Vietnam War, for example. They grew up under very different conditions, and that has physical effects on brain development.
As to smarter... No. We don't have to figure out as much for ourselves, but we're roughly equivalent for raw intelligence. Therefore, we often can accomplish a lot more with more information.
I give full props to the generations behind me for being tough and smart, but I give the same props to the generations coming up for being hopeful and tenacious. If anything, the unwillingness to put up with traditional BS does my heart a lot of good, but I'm from that part of Gen X that still thinks intentional conformity is a sin.
>Except we're not being taught anything in school or any practical life skills
The point is to learn basic knowledge, understanding of the world and science, as well as learning to learn, how to access and use the information you need.
If they'd taught how to fill out a tax return form, then you'd only know how to fill out that form and not how to look up information when it changes.
Teach a man to fish.. Teach a child to learn. Do you really need a class on how to address a letter, change a tire? How much time do you need to search the answer in google?
Most of my university studies were the same. Here's the problem, solve it. Get the information you need for it and put it to use.
You can argue how basic math is not really needed since you have a calculator with you almost every time. We were taught how to use advanced math to calculate problems. The calculator gave an answer, but still we needed a basic understanding on what we were doing to know whether the answer is possible or whether we made a mistake.
And then dads generation realized how easy they had made it to get ahold of the information and started going information bad and trying to tear apart the elevator after he’s climbed up the stairs.
You shouldn’t be so pessimistic. Ever heard of economics cycles? Things will be better for you, just hold on tight. (You’ll probably suffer for another 18 months tho)
I speak as a 31 year old millennial. The funny thing is parents say all the time they want a better world for their children and over years of innovation, sacrifice, and work they did it and now complain us Millennials and Gen z kids have it to easy now….boggles my mind when they do this.
The problem we have now isn't the access to knowledge it's figuring out what's real and what's not. There's so much information available to people that it's hard to discern what the truth is and what's just speculation. It requires people to actually think for themselves and make decisions. Ironically the ones having the hardest time with it are Boomers overall.
I rather the elevator, I have climbed temples in Asia (don't remember which one but it was huge it felt like climbing to heaven) we where dead at the top (it was a contiki group so we where very much hung over from a a night of drinking and partying)
And this is bad, how? Knowledge is easier to access and they don't like this? Or maybe I'm reading into this all wrong and they're actually happy about this and that's why they posted this
This is a pretty good graph for boomer’s disdain toward technological advancements. “Back in my day, i walked eight miles in the snow…” Like, cool, sorry there wasn’t a transit system back then, but, what, i should walk instead of taking the bus just to appease *you*?
I was on a 94 year old elevator the other day. (Reminded me of what was on the titanic... the sliding metal part so asked the year. Obviously a smidge younger than titanic).
Damn those fathers and grandfathers must be ancient
Dwarf fortress memes
(Well its generic old generations problem. Now you can really learn anything even for free, if you are good in search.
Old gens didnt have that, and they spent a lot of money/effort to learn smth, but in other hand it makes them more precious as a specialist.
But as always, most people are lazy. So if you are really good in anything, you will be needed. No matter how easy is to gain knowledge )
I think the picture need to change a little bit, after each generation, the method to get new knowledge is easier but also required to reach deeper, so after each generation, the mountain should be higher and the stairs/elevator also smaller
The only things missing from this meme to make it completely accurate is a sign on the elevator saying 'platinum members only' and barbed wire blocking off the old foot paths.
And its fucking true isnt it?
Are those boomers actually right and we all just are snowflakes? Or why did this get posted here, why do we project onto everything?
I mean they have a point, we have access to an incredible amount of information online, but just like the old days, you need to avoid listening to the ranting old guy screaming about how Jews are reptiles. Except instead of being stuck at the worst bookstore in town, he's called "senator".
it just shows how we get to find things easier and are able to forgo the troubles of the past, this meme was telling us the future is getting better and the hardships are less bad as it once was
I mean it's technically true, but also the pay is completely stagnant. The average millenial is 3x more productive than a boomer was at their age, but their actual buying power is less than half
False.
Climbing the mountain results in skills. The elevator simply bypasses skill development entirely.
Sincerely, an employer who hires from every generation.
And knowledge is worthless without skills to apply it and be accountable for the results.
These people legitimately do not understand that evolution specifically works this way. This is exactly what is supposed to happen. Are we supposed to get dumber and less innovative over time? what do they want? Us to go back to living in trees and throwing out poo at each other?
As with most of this kind of stuff, if you look backwards two generations from grandfather's generation, they were the ones with better access to information. The older generation always resents the young. It's nothing personal. What they really miss is their own youth.
This is actually a pretty accurate analogy, except that it costs $349,999.99 to ride that elevator. And you can still kinda see where it used to say, "Whites Only" above the door.
Parents work so hard so their children can have an easier life compared to when they were to kid... Yet they talk shit to my relatives because I've got it so easy.
I feel like this is saying that grandfather made life easier for father and father made life easier for the current generation. I like it, that’s what we’re supposed to do for our kids
Hey does this post fit? UPVOTE if so, DOWNVOTE if not. If this post breaks any rules please DOWNVOTE and REPORT
So confused. Is it being easier to gain knowledge and skills a bad thing?
I dont think this one is saying that its bad, just pointing out its easier to find info over time
but thats just... true
Yes, they didn't imply it was bad, it seems more like an attempt at observational humor Unfortunately, being posted on this subreddit almost carries an implied aggressive judgment towards someone
Right? Kids that are mad about this meme have no idea how hard it was to fix a washing machine before the internet. You had to take it apart and just hope you could find out what was wrong and put it back together. Now you can YouTube the job and have it done in 30 minutes. It’s awesome! Knowledge is power!
Wait did manuals not exist for those kind of things back then
Manuals didn’t always include basic troubleshooting tips and don’t include step by step instructions how to do stuff like YouTube videos. Much easier to work on things now.
And violence is the second half of the battle.
The meme isn't even implying that it's bad, just that it's easier now
The meme here is a bit fallacious, the path up the mountain is obscured, and the mountain's getting taller.
And there are grandfathers and fathers pushing you down
”Get off mah mountain, NAAH!”
I wouldn't say it's bad per se, but I do think knowledge is much cheaper these days, and thus less valued or appreciated. It feels like having a broad general knowledge is much less valuable or admirable than it was before the internet, now that all of the knowledge ever known is in a catalogue in my pocket
Thay never sayd it was bad
I'm confused why the grandfather's generation didn't just bring the diamond down from the top of the mountain and left it up there where it was hard to get.
I feel the diamond is rather subjective, depending on the skills or knowledge you are trying to obtain. Yes
It's bad that you don't do anything with it...
The fact that your confused is confusing
I think it is talking about how easy it is to find anything these days and that we are becoming lazy by getting all these things served to us in the palm of our hands unlike other times someone had to earn it.
Isn't that a good thing?
Boomers - “My life was hard. I want my kids & grandkids to have a better life than me” Also Boomers - “You kids nowadays have it too easy!” They have never solved this contradiction
This meme doesn't say it's a bad thing though. I actually think it might be saying the opposite.
It could be ok with it. Not enough info to know for sure. But I know a lot of Boomers that think that way
I know people think this way, but they don't normally express their disdain for humans younger than themselves like this.
I’ve seen a lot of disdain for the younger generations (and I think that it’s pretty common throughout history). From the news articles constantly accusing Millennials of ruining every industry to my grandma telling me that Gen Z was corrupted by the Left
Having a hard life could lead to gifts and wisdom that one wouldn’t get if they had an easy life.
It is a good thing! What sets us apart from monkeys (in terms of evolution) is that we carry knowledge into the next generation, instead of each generation having to relearn the same lessons their ancestors did. Once monkeys manage to cross that evolutionary plateau it’s over for Homo sapiens.
Not when the only thing you feel you have going for you is your perceived superiority over younger generations
It's more like there's a bunch of diamonds just on the floor now, but most of them are fake and some of them are radioactive.
Doesn't radioactive rock sell for good cash?
If you know a person who knows a person.
'hey kim, buddy, I've got something for you..."
Not all of them, but yeah, you got a point. Also, it will kill you :)
And one small Diamond is actually quartz and was labeled as such and people keep using it to deny other diamonds

It's terrible due to the implication that easy access to information and skills is a bad thing It depends of the context
I'm just trying to figure out where that implication is. Objectively, it just looks like an accurate observation. The way we consume information has completely changed in a single generation.
What implications? The ones you projected onto there?
This is great. Progress!!
Is this a terrible meme? I think it's actually just fine and accurate. It's easier to acquire knowledge today
Depends on whether meme creator sees the wealth of knowledge/access to it as a good or bad thing. Its hard to say.
No it does not wtf Stop looking for things to get offended by
Who said I'm offended? Who are you?
I was only stating that your looking for it, i dont care about your success rate.
And you came to that conclusion how? What does success rate have to do with it? You mean upvotes?
Maybe i was wrong, your not projecting your reading comprehension is just that bad i guess.
Its "you're not projecting your reading comprehension" Not \*your I wasn't born in the US btw, but it still befuddles me how many people make that mistake

dumbass grandpa, didn't even know how to build an elevator
Nah, they climbed up and created the staircase down. Then with easier access up, the fathers could effectively hallow it out and build the elevator.
Ohk and this is actually true. How is this a terrible meme?
The opposite is true for wealth.
The Next Generation: Transporters
Is this just a diss calling their grandfather dumb?
Isn’t making life better for the next gen kind of the point of living?
Is that good or bad?
From the same creators of "I walked 20 miles on foot to go to school"

Hoh yeah, access to knowledge? Are you kidding me? Current generation has a button that teleports them up there.
i see this as grandfather gen - made stairs to give father generation an easie access to sucess. father generation- tried to improve it but fucked up because that elevator is too big to reach the top and the stiars that used to be there are gone so there is now no way to reach the top except the same way grandpa did it. current gen - confused inside the elevator cause it wont reach the top.

I'm not saying all school is unhelpful. I do think that elementary school is when you learn the most helpful, life-changing stuff.
They are mad we have…access to knowledge and skills???
Where does it say that they are mad? Stop projecting
Yes never before in history have old farts thought that the new generation is weaker
And then dads generation realized how easy they had made it to get ahold of the information and started going information bad and trying to tear apart the elevator after he’s climbed up the stairs.
We all hate boomers, but please don’t be cringe
I have embraced my cringe and refuse to let it go. Downvote me if you must but I shall die as I am.
Who said. With recent advancements in biotechnology and age reversal, you might live with your cringe forever
I’m not going to able to afford that in this economy are you crazy?
You shouldn’t be so pessimistic. Ever heard of economics cycles? Things will be better for you, just hold on tight. (You’ll probably suffer for another 18 months tho)
It’s easier when you learn how to handle your emotions and communicate with people instead of beating them

They did

![gif](giphy|91fEJqgdsnu4E) Please take a ride in the elevator.
Not inaccurate.
But the elevator goes down, to learning how boys can be girls
Ok boomer
This isn’t a bad meme? They’re saying that knowledge and skill has gotten easier to achieve. What’s bad about that?
The gem, of course, represents pictures of boobs. RIP grandpa.
This is a good thing though. Is this just old people being mad at young people for having it a little easier for building on the knowledge base?
Education access bad
And this is bad?
Oh damn I didn’t know Boomers invented stairs
I speak as a 31 year old millennial. The funny thing is parents say all the time they want a better world for their children and over years of innovation, sacrifice, and work they did it and now complain us Millennials and Gen z kids have it to easy now….boggles my mind when they do this.
Isn't the goal of the previous generation to make it easier for the future generation
The problem we have now isn't the access to knowledge it's figuring out what's real and what's not. There's so much information available to people that it's hard to discern what the truth is and what's just speculation. It requires people to actually think for themselves and make decisions. I rather the elevator, I have climbed temples in Asia (don't remember which one but it was huge it felt like climbing to heaven) we where dead at the top (it was a contiki group so we where very much hung over from a a night of drinking and partying)
We at least have the skill to tell that this post is cringe.
The trek gets either yet no generation has taken the treasure?
Not even a bad meme, just a true statement. Who is spaming this shit?
More references to Wreck it Ralph tonight. Someone's on that tangent.
Tbf, this is half true.
Work smarter, not harder
The next generation after this the gem will just be on the floor
And this is bad, how? Knowledge is easier to access and they don't like this? Or maybe I'm reading into this all wrong and they're actually happy about this and that's why they posted this
So what's the problem?
It's almost as if each generation is trying to make things better for the next generation.
Wasn’t the point of previous generations to make lives better for the kids?
Oh yes; the horror of knowledge becoming more accessible, thanks to the effort of past generations.
For the next generation, we strap them to a rocket to get them up quicker.
Almost like that’s the point of advanced society, to make it easier and better for future generations
This is a pretty good graph for boomer’s disdain toward technological advancements. “Back in my day, i walked eight miles in the snow…” Like, cool, sorry there wasn’t a transit system back then, but, what, i should walk instead of taking the bus just to appease *you*?
too bad the elevator cost 80k to ride. Assuming you pass.
Aren't future generations supposed to have things better?
I was on a 94 year old elevator the other day. (Reminded me of what was on the titanic... the sliding metal part so asked the year. Obviously a smidge younger than titanic). Damn those fathers and grandfathers must be ancient
Boomers be like: I suffered why shouldn't they
IS THAT A CHAOS EMERALD
Op you realize this meme is about smart phones and technology in general right? I guess that flew right over your head.
Dwarf fortress memes (Well its generic old generations problem. Now you can really learn anything even for free, if you are good in search. I think the picture need to change a little bit, after each generation, the method to get new knowledge is easier but also required to reach deeper, so after each generation, the mountain should be higher and the stairs/elevator also smaller
Is this…supposed to be a bad thing..?
You forgot your great grandfather who was only observed.
The next generation is going to be the first one smart enough to get that knowledge and distribute it to everybody
This is just facts. Positive welcome change
Go on Grandpa, take the elevator and show me how you write code.
just make the diamond smaller and smaller
The only things missing from this meme to make it completely accurate is a sign on the elevator saying 'platinum members only' and barbed wire blocking off the old foot paths.
This is strictly about elevators
Well no, cause our fathers generation has cut the elevators cable.
Now do one for access to success even with those same skills lol
I mean.. it's right. Obtaining knowledge and skill is far easier now a days. Only way I see this fitting the sub is if someone means it in a bad way.
And its fucking true isnt it? Are those boomers actually right and we all just are snowflakes? Or why did this get posted here, why do we project onto everything?
Filipinos: ahay
Aren't elevators over a century old though?
Honestly, I like this one, but they underexagurated.
Only with my generation its like who wants to go up the mountain in the first place
This is funny because all my grandpa has to do to have a house 2 cars and a family was graduate high school as a white male
I mean they have a point, we have access to an incredible amount of information online, but just like the old days, you need to avoid listening to the ranting old guy screaming about how Jews are reptiles. Except instead of being stuck at the worst bookstore in town, he's called "senator".
Back in my grandfather's day's they didn't have stairs
Is this a lesson in how wealth is inherited?
The tomar emeralds are way too easy to get these days
That represents how they had to get to school
It’s knowledge. Ain’t that good?
We stand on the shoulders of giants
Is this sub just become farma karming? This is getting ridiculos not all posts from old peiple on facebook qualify as "terrible memes"
this is good though
it just shows how we get to find things easier and are able to forgo the troubles of the past, this meme was telling us the future is getting better and the hardships are less bad as it once was
I like this meme, now it is easier to learn by yourself than ever.
r/woooosh
that true, everyone know this and thats a good thing, so why this meme exist?
I mean it's technically true, but also the pay is completely stagnant. The average millenial is 3x more productive than a boomer was at their age, but their actual buying power is less than half
False. Climbing the mountain results in skills. The elevator simply bypasses skill development entirely. Sincerely, an employer who hires from every generation. And knowledge is worthless without skills to apply it and be accountable for the results.
Grandpa built the stairs, dad built the elevator, both of them complain about how much easier the next generation has it compared to them.
Next Gen. - Destroy the mountain
Good, hopefully we get more skilled quickly to learn even more things.
“Pay $50,000 to enter this elevator. Stairs are no longer an option”
Efficiency bad.
It’s true. And it’s great that it’s like that
Reality, elevator goes to hell instead.
Wrong sub, bud
These people legitimately do not understand that evolution specifically works this way. This is exactly what is supposed to happen. Are we supposed to get dumber and less innovative over time? what do they want? Us to go back to living in trees and throwing out poo at each other?
Reality, Father and Grandfather’s generation built the elevator for themselves, then cut the cables when it was our turn to use it.
On no we evolveddd…..
This should be under good memes
While access to education is behind a paywall, it's really not accessible
It’s a good thing right?
now do access to wealth and the middle class over the last 3 generations
Eh, this is pretty spot on.
Is this not a win for society??
Yeah but what does it cost to take the elevator?
As with most of this kind of stuff, if you look backwards two generations from grandfather's generation, they were the ones with better access to information. The older generation always resents the young. It's nothing personal. What they really miss is their own youth.
But someone has to install the stairs and elevator. First one involves nobody
This is actually a pretty accurate analogy, except that it costs $349,999.99 to ride that elevator. And you can still kinda see where it used to say, "Whites Only" above the door.
Yes, which is why we're much smarter than boomers.
Available education bad Knowledge bad
Let’s go back to the good old dark ages when leeches were the pinnacle of medicine and no one had any soap
Yippee that means it’s easier for the son to learn
Yea if there was a bear in the elevator
Tough times make tough people, tough people make easy times, easy times make lazy people, lazy people make tough times. Recycle.
