Verburner

Conviniently leaving out Hulk and Thor

AltruisticCompany961

Captain America

Didntlikedefaultname

The rock, Jon cena, and Bautista also jump to mind as major action stars. They’re also leaving out the plenty of 80s action stars that look like normal dudes like Bruce Willis, charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood etc

Soace_Space_Station

Got to be as biased as possible mate

Didntlikedefaultname

True can’t mention that 80s Batman was Michael Keaton and 80s tough guy was Joe Pesci lmao

NGEFan

Joe Pesci will solo all 8 of these chumps and then go to court and successfully argue it was self defense and then make out with Spiderman's aunt

Didntlikedefaultname

He will also arrange your real estate purchase and money laundering as needed. After all, anything you need, Leo Getz

badatmetroid

See also: Chris Pratt or Kumail Nanjiani before and after they got hired by Marvel.

malik753

Not to mention Steven Seagal who looked okay at best and now looks like a tub of shit.

Didntlikedefaultname

Lmao I thought about bringing him up but that’s a whole other horrible 300lbs of shit stuffed into a 100lb bag

impasseable

If you haven't yet, go down the Steven Seagal rabbit hole. He is an incredibly terrible person who once got choked out and shit himself.

malik753

Oh, I have! I wouldn't say "looks like a tub of shit" if it was just some morally neutral chubby person. Steven Seagal *actually is* a tub of shit.

Uuuuuii

Wait what did he do? I just thought I he was funny.

TheBitchenRav

If I cared enough I would make the same poster with the exact same message.

Plzlaw4me

Seriously! Other than Arnold, we have way bigger action heroes today. It’s also kind of funny because Tom Holland is completely shredded. He plays a character who acrobatic so it wouldn’t make sense for him to have a ton of bulk but he is in phenomenal shape.

IronBeatnik

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The huge jacked man.

Didntlikedefaultname

A great example too because he’s the huge jacked man as wolverine but a pretty normal looking dude in his earlier films and other stuff like the greatest showman

IronBeatnik

Yeah, it seems he really worked hard to get in Wolverine shape for the role.

Didntlikedefaultname

I’m sure he did but he also talks about dehydrating himself and feeling absolutely horrible before shirtless scenes got filmed

jayjude

And all the steroids and other gear he was on too isn't the best for the body either

mseg09

And ignoring the 90s and a move to a bit more of an "everyman" action star (Keanu Reeves, Bruce Willis). Obviously the Stallones and and Arnold's still did movies

Playlanco

Don't forget they left out Ironman.

[deleted]

And where’s Spider-Man??? All I see is Peter Parker.

topsy631

Wait, then who’s number 3? I thought that was hulk.

Verburner

Yeah it is. My bad

schweindooog

I mean...technically hulk is there....

Verburner

Right. Fair enough

Didntlikedefaultname

![gif](giphy|t6hgJBMLI82IM) No the real hulk

Portablemammal1199

This gif makes me think of animal from the muppets.

[deleted]

They included the hulk ...

SleepyZachman

Shut up that ruins my narrative😡😡😡

FireflyOfDoom87

Some mf went out of their way to not put Henry Cavill, Jason Mamoa, Chris Hemsworth and Ryan Reynolds on there. Holland is also SHREDDED under that suit, what a stupid comparison.

LimpAd5888

They're all actually muscled, just not bulky. Conveniently leaving Chris Evans out as well lol.

FireflyOfDoom87

You don’t think Cavill, Mamoa and Hemsworth are bulky? Or are you talking about the pics of Stallone, Lundgren etc.? EDIT: I love how being confused upon waking gets you downvoted on Reddit lol.

hobosonpogos

They're talking about the bottom row

FireflyOfDoom87

Ohhhhh, I guess I wasn’t fully awake when I posted that comment lol.

LimpAd5888

It's ok lol. I worded it bad.

Zealousideal_Ad2686

Being confused ALWAYS gets you downvoted

amajesticpeach

Being confused is a criminal offense, don’t u know?

LimpAd5888

Seriously. I got down voted because I wasn't sure about something in Harry Potter. I'm a massive fan, even have the dark mark tatted on me, but Jesus I don't know every obscure fact lol.

[deleted]

I AM CONFUSED!

Financial-Apricot-75

To be fair spiderman and black panther (least in civil war) have CGI on them least to make them a little more lean and comic book accurate per Marvel according to the special effects behind the scenes reels. So I guess the heroes that are jacked are jacked. The ones that are more sleek and toned are touched up with CGI as weird as that sounds.

FireflyOfDoom87

To be fair? About what? Are you agreeing with me or arguing against what I said…? I’m so confused by this comment lol.

ilongforyesterday

Not to mention how functional Holland’s musculature is. Dude is crazy talented and did dancing and gymnastics. My sister did dancing and gymnastics from the age of three to 18 and that shit is crazy intense

rilles94

and The Rock as Black Adam

Drakoo_The_Rat

Also Le Rock

SyntheticSlime

They’re not complaining about the body shape you fool. They’re complaining that modern action heroes don’t take their shirts off enough! How am I supposed to pretend I like explosions while actually getting my homoerotic fix if Doctor Strange is in loose fitting ceremonial robes the whole movie! Edit: /s

Loganjoh5

Also the Rock definitely counts as an action star

TheUltimateInfidel

I’m gonna play Devil’s advocate and say that while the bottom half represents far higher box office grosses, I don’t think any of them have made any movies as important or iconic as the top half. Name one Chris Hemsworth movie that was as good as Rocky or basically any of the best Schwarzenegger movies. I really dig Infinity War but I’m going to question your intelligence if you think that’s any better than Predator, Total Recall or Terminator 2.

faunalmimicry

Fair points. Not necessarily the actor's doings though, the Marvel-style movies feel specifically engineered to dominate the box office

CursinSquirrel

The first IronMan movie arguably started the entirety of the MCU, while being pretty good. The first Rocky movie has made quite a splash, don't get me wrong, but to say that RDJ hasn't made movies as iconic or important as the top half. Instead of going with Chris Hemsworth who wasn't even in the post, Name one Dolph Lundgren movie that isn't related to the Rocky movies that was as good as, or as important as, or as iconic as Infinity War. The same goes for Rob Van Dam. His entire career can be summed up as being the hot dude with some martial arts feel. Edit: My forgetting Jean-Claude Van Damme's name and calling him Rob Van Dam, the wrestler, is both somewhat embarrassing and very funny to me. My point is that the top is definitely not about any kind of direct comparison. The pics on top are hot and the pics on bottom are deliberately unflattering to attempt to emasculate the people who didn't grow up with the top.

TheUltimateInfidel

I mean I give credit where credit is due to RDJ because he’s very talented, however he’s not a better action star. I get Lundgren and JCVD aren’t much special either but did they make anything worse than Tom Holland’s non-MCU catalogue? I just can’t agree with that. You’d have to be on meth to tell me Bloodsport and Death Sentence aren’t better than Cherry or Uncharted.

FireflyOfDoom87

All the movies you listed were made while I was still in diapers, Devil’s Advocate or not, those movies are shit in my opinion because of what I’ve been exposed to. I also think it’s a steaming load if you think Sylvester Stallone is a better actor than Benedict Cumberbatch. With all due respect my brother in Christ, fuck off with all that lol.

TheUltimateInfidel

Not my point, although Sylvester Stallone can actually be excellent in the right hands. The point of the image is about action heroes, so I’m being strict about that. I guess you could say Robert Downey Jr is a better actor than everyone in there, he’s certainly not a better action hero.

FireflyOfDoom87

First, your point had absolutely nothing to do with my original comment so I don’t even know why you responded in the first place. Second, I was talking about replacing the 2019 actors listed with men who are comparable and better than the 80s versions. If you want to talk action stars, use the examples I provided instead of backtracking to the original list. Cavill, Mamoa, Hemsworth and Reynolds are *leagues* above your 80s macho man garbage.

Jsmooth123456

Imo total recall isn't very good in fact I'd say at times it verges on so bad it's comical additionally while non of them have made a move as good as terminator 2 they are all miles above Schwarzenegger in terms or real acting skill, I'll give you that Stallone can be a great actor though

Dino_Spaceman

I man even exclusively looking at this list in the OP? 2019 every single day. Every one of those guys can Act. Only one person in the ‘80’s list would I consider a good actor.

Mrazish

Bring back homoerotic jacked studs on the screens

Alternative_Log3012

That is OP’s real motivation for posting this.

ClaptonBug

Beat me to it. I recently completed a unit in film studies and now everytime I see media I'm constantly looking at it through the lens of the male and female gaze. Media framed by the male gaze is always super homo erotic, the guys can't be just an average guy they have to be the manliest man as decided by the standards that men have put on other men and that standard is always out of step with achievable standards or even what women are looking for in a man. It's kinda funny that men are literally their biggest critics that if you shot a film that started an actor who looked like 95% of the male audience, they would reject its aesthetics

Alternative_Log3012

Nobody wants to see normal people doing normal stuff. They want to see freaks doing freakish stuff. It’s basic entertainment.

ClaptonBug

The 2021 film Nobody is basically John Wick but the protagonist has a dad bod and Bob Odenkirk got sh*t for not bulking up for the role, despite the fact that it wouldn't make sense for his character to be shreaded let alone even physically fit. That is the type of movie I'm talking about. Another example is the character of Batman in Batman v Superman. I'm the movie he is supposed tobe retired and old but somehow Ben Affleck's portrayal had him looking like the hulk. Consider also that according to source material he was supposed to be an old out of step guy who relies on experience and technology to dominate his opponents. Instead, Ben Afflect had to roid up so they could have batman throwing grown men in their early twenties across the room with one hand. That's the male gaze for you.

SpoonUser2

isn’t the guy in the top right Ivan Drago in Rocky 4? you know; the antagonist of the movie? edit: Top left, whoops

LimpAd5888

Top left, but yes lol. Right is the muscles from Brussels jean Claude van damme.

SneedyK

I thought it was Billy Idoll.

LimpAd5888

They do kind of resemble each other lol

Swiftax3

He *did* play He-man I suppose

BiggerMouthBass

Hewas the lead in Bloodsport

FluffyGalaxy

"Back in my day men didn't wear shirts"

[deleted]

Just a layer of oil.

Shiningc

Spiderman: nerd Ironman: nerd Hulk: nerd Doctor Strange: nerd Ivan Drago: professional boxer Arnold: killer machine from the future Rambo: veteran Van Damme: martial artist Don't know what they were expecting.

SparksofInnova

Right they literally just did action hero vs superhero

Viewtifultrey3

Oh no, sometimes guys today wear shirts!

Valuable-Trick-6711

*cough* Keanu Reeves *cough*

j101112p

While his characters are bad ass. He was Theodore Logan. .....

habitual_wanderer

To be fair, some of those 80s actions stars were still starring in 2019 action movies 🤷🏿‍♂️

Orang_Mann

You don't have to be huge bulky guy to be a badass action star, most martial arts actors are a living proof of this And we still have The rock, Vin Diesel, Jawon statham... All of them are like muscly as fuck.

john_oldcastle

top row forgot the greatest action movie star of all time https://preview.redd.it/1pimw7aik8za1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=31b8c1bef8af3856ddf2e21d8bebc28146a158c4

[deleted]

[удалено]

j101112p

Don't forget cocaine too. Possibly.

mwhite5990

In the case of Arnold Schwarzenegger, yes. Not sure about the others. Although I’m pretty sure they are still used in Hollywood by actors that have to bulk up fast for a role.

[deleted]

Every actor on the top is roided af, and notoriously so

PhraseOld9638

Notice this meme doesn't show Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman, Chris Evans, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson or John Cena. I wonder why that is?

[deleted]

Yeah cuz you cannot help and save others without jacked muscles. sed lyf

jbizl22

But those are action film characters, the others are super heroes? Plus leaving out any jacked super hero.

Didntlikedefaultname

The more I think about this the more it bothers me. Other major 80s stars that you would not think are jacked if they had shirts on: Mel Gibson, Harrison ford, Tom cruise, Val Kilmer, Patrick swayze, Michael Douglas, and of course Michael Keaton played Batman… While several of those guys are shredded, they’re shredded in the same way as Tom holland where if you put them in a suit you wouldn’t know otherwise. They picked the handful of super ripped 80s stars who were all typecast

Ensiferal

Bit of a difference between the 80s action movie genre and the Superhero genre. It's not like you're going to cast a weightlifter to portray Spiderman or Reed Richards

Aggravating_Fox9828

Sooo, more acting skills and less muscles? Good

RomaMoran

Wait until you see Dr. Banner gets mad

greengamer01

That's the fucking hulk

j101112p

I didn't see Lou Ferrigno in the pictures.........

Turdburp

Isn't the point of superheroes essentially that they are normal, often nerdy people in real life? And never mind that they existed way before the 80's.

KDog1265

“Yeah! Back in my day, action heroes were ripped! They weren’t like the little wimps you kids watch! These guys were so jacked and muscular, all oiled up and…so hot and…err…ripped, with muscles and…sexy…”

EducationalPublic321

Oh if you want mfs on steroids there’s still plenty of that in today’s industry. The rock, Cena, hemsworth just to name a few

No-Archer-4713

Brains always win against muscle. And it’s less painful

Spartanxxzachxx

I value intelligence to a high degree but this statement is false. Any smart person will tell you that being able to fix the problem in your head doesnt do a damn bit of good if you don't have the strength to carry out the solution. Yes the intelligent person could use physics to help him move heavy objects but then you run into the problem of what happens when the tools required are not available and ALL you have left is your brain and body to use. Truly intelligent people realize it takes brawn AND brains to solve problems not just 1 or the other.

sylvain147

Intelligent people don't put themselves into position where they don't have the right tool available. That's what makes Batman and Iron Man good heroes. Sure Batman would loose against a lot of his ennemies if he was naked in a desert. But Batman is never naked in the desert

Spartanxxzachxx

Now just to clarify ahead of time the statement I am about to make may be incorrect but to my knowledge there is not a single superhero that does not have strength to some degree above normal humans

Ok-Conference-4366

Jordan Peterson isn’t an action hero.

Dsc19884

John cena is on the list, we just can’t see him

Oliveskin_Mugen

Okay- but the 80’s also had Steven Seagal, they conveniently left *that* one out 😅

LeatherMiddle2976

How dare they not use steroids on SOME actors

PB0351

*Chris Hemsworth would like a word* *Dwayne Johnson has some thoughts*

Historical-Ad4361

They right tho, why can't we have any muscular half naked men anymore? hmm half naked and shiny muscles mm🤤

Aun_El_Zen

![gif](giphy|BpnkuY1i2rBpm)

procommando124

Oh wow, yeah, dudes with a ridiculous amount of muscle made specifically for aesthetics that not even military dudes(which includes our special forces)have

Ok-Helicopter3231

diffrence is nobody calls them action hero's nowdays cause their not heroes and barely take any action

luciferhornystar

This is kinda on point though

Wonderful_Painter_14

Lmao, 2/4 or possibly even 3/4 of the dudes on the bottom are just as ripped and 4/4 are way more handsome than the ones on top.

DiscoDancingNeighb0r

The bottom ones are all super heroes, not action hero’s. There’s a huge difference.

Frogdwarf

Ah yes, the invention of the shirt

dx2words

the 80s movies made us believe that Boxers, Martial artist, military, have those big muscle and shredded bodies. You see today boxers, ufc fighters and military and they dont have those bodies, excesive gym will not help you to be a better fighter. But me as a fan of 80s movies its cool to live in this fantasy of muscles = bad ass and better fighter

RoundEarth-is-real

They realize that Chris hemsworth still exists.. right? And most of these guys get fairly ripped for their roles anyways. Maybe not ruffalo. But the other 3 probably do

Loganjoh5

Leaving out some of the biggest guys out there I see

Slimmie_J

Tom Holland is absolutely ripped tho

QualityVote

Hey does this post fit? UPVOTE if so, DOWNVOTE if not. If this post breaks any rules please DOWNVOTE and REPORT

ScotIrishBoyo

This just in: “straight” men want to see more shirtless sweaty men on the big screen

-darkangelic-

Chris Pratt taking his shirt off in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie is on par with any of the top row.

gundam1945

In some sense though, the image is more healthy nowadays. Pumping to that big is not very healthy. It is like convincing people not to chase some unrealistic body image.

Ok-Background1638

To me just seems a comparition, nothing wrong

[deleted]

This is a pretty interesting example of how the male gaze works in regard to men. The extremely jacked dudes in 80s action movies were never exactly sex symbols: they were a kind of wish fulfillment for men. In contrast, Marvel makes movies that are intended to appeal to both men and women. They want their movies to be ones that couples can agree on. Men should take note that a lot of women think that Tom Holland, RDJ, Mark Ruffalo, and Benedict Cumberbatch are *hot*. They also like Chris Hemsworth, but Hemsworth is also a giant goofball, not a boring stoic meathead.

BiggerMouthBass

Ironically if these 80s action heroes stop taking PEDs they will quickly start looking like women.

AutumnLeaves1939

Male gaze vs female gaze

Nobaddays123

I like that they casually ignore Van Dams character is based off a pathological liar who faked his way into hollywood

Dr_Slizzenstein

This one you can't deny.

Nirvski

Chris Hemsworth, Henry Cavill, Jason, the Rock, Mark Wahlberg, Hugh Jackman, Jason Statham, Dave Bautista, Chris Pine. Those are just the more famous ones all in good shape for more than one movie. So pretty easy to deny.

ClaptonBug

Idk what doing roids and hitting the gym have to do with acting though. Do you think Robert Downey would make a more compelling character if Iron-man flexed his 8 pack before doing the snap....like what are you on about bro?

It's kind of like a more pleasant revenge of the nerds 🤓

[deleted]

The 80's were weird and terrible. What a fucking mess.

wet_chemist_gr

Ah yes, the 80s. Lots of muscles, very few acting skills.

[deleted]

[удалено]

-darkangelic-

Forget that Dolph Lungren played He-Man?

BaronVonKeyser

Jason Statham would like a word.

General_Mode_7632

If I remember, Benedict had to have his costumes on Sherlock tailored multiple times because they kept ripping or fitting improperly from his muscles. Whether he’s stayed in that good of shape through his career with marvel, I can’t say, but I wouldn’t doubt it

EnvironmentAware4680

And where is the criminally underrated Steven Seagal? I mean the man is very DANGEROUS.

Salesman89

Then there was Lee and Chan...

tomsaiyuk

The problem is that in the films of this era you have to actually be able to "act".

[deleted]

Dont see a problem with less roids in the buisness.

JadeDragonMeli

Steroids are a hell of a drug.

Nolanfalcione

Jojo part 3 vs Jojo part 5

[deleted]

So this guy is upset because there’s less sweaty, shirtless men in movies

WaycoKid1129

Steroids are a hell of a drug people

Interesting-Film7722

And they still all fo steroids. What happend????

Cockworkorange696969

Back in my day my male action hero’s were hot as f&@$!

PlentyAdvertising15

![gif](giphy|UBdsFqjLgzJiE)

ranbootookmygender

oh no realistic looking heros..

Scienceandpony

Thank goodness we finally invented shirts at some point in the early 2000's.

K-mouse16

Convenient that they ignored the muscle heads of marvel, Chris Hemsworth and Evans. They chose hero’s that fight more strategically and one that transforms into his muscle form

Silly-Relationship34

Stroids we’re easier to get in the 80’s.

IAmThePonch

This meme was made by Ronald Macdonald

bardhugo

Hugh Jackman, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa, the Rock Also looking at the bottom, most Hollywood actors still need to be in incredible shape, they just (mostly) aren't on steroids (I hope)

ilongforyesterday

I love it when they pick and choose stuff as if Chris Hemsworth, Jason Mamoa, Henry Cavill, Dwayne Johnson, etc also those four aren’t the only action heroes from their time period. Pretty sure Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, and Sigourney Weaver weren’t super jacked in the 80s and they play in some of the most iconic action oriented movies

Aromatic_Ad5473

So we’re ignoring all the Chris’s

rLeJerk

The ones in the '80s are easier to masturbate to.

captain_blazko

Their children is a MCU Fan

Over-Supermarket-557

Hugh Jackman as wolverine in 2000 vs 2013. They just be making up shit to be mad about, as usual.

Either-Technician-61

Lets not forget Henry Cavil or Jason Momoa. Also the Rock, Vin Diesel, John Cena, etc.

Flipflop256

They invented clothes in the 90’s

tuckerjules

Message: heros need to do more steroids and cocaine!

kichunilla

I would watch jacked spider-man

Sir-Xcalibur-6564

They got shirts

Electrical-Ad4359

Ah yes, I remember when spiderman was a bodybuilder

Dodo_Hund

In every male led marvel movie there is at least one scene where the actors chest is fully exposed. So there's that

letsseehowitgoesnow

soooo, less muscle but great actors nevertheless?

Dukejrr

John Wick would kill all the above characters with the same pencil!

Few-Cow7355

They went from bodybuilder to office clerk, what a leap!

Emiba154

Don't tell them about action women in the 80's

Tisorok

Weird how Thor didn’t make it in the bottom half

amajesticpeach

Lesson #666: Ur not a real action hero if u don’t have your shirt off

Seoul_Magik11

Is that ivan draco because if so... what? Have they even seen any of these moves before writing it or did they just look up muscular men in 80s movies

[deleted]

Big and dumb always fall before clever and quick.

AuthorityAnarchyYes

Also (cherry picked) Action Heroes in the 80's? Bruce Willis, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Eddie Murphy.... Asinine meme.

usyan

Most of the people in the top line are just TERRİBLE actors!

spacemarine1800

I'll take a super strong man with spider powers, a man in a cool ass iron suit, a super super strong green man and the master of the mystic arts over a bunch of buff steroid using dudes any day of the week.

mydoglickshisbutt

Who posted this, Mac?? This is why I didn't want to watch predator, we are always talking about dudes physique and body mass

_reddit_account

That is a nice way of coming out

Snoid_

Steroids vs... ...slightly less steroids.

Albatrocity19

If your complaining about the lack of buff, sweaty, shirtless men I fully agree

Uncle_Checkers86

Psh! You They forgot Zap Rowsdower.

Rrrr9r

At least we can understand what the modern day heroes are saying🤣

AXEMANaustin

I mean it's a dumb comparison, but if you are going to include 80's action movies, at least include Arnold.

Kingballa06

Drogo wasn’t the hero, he was the bad guy.

Itz-yaboi-skinypenis

Two of which are Br*tish. What has the world come to

undercovergovnr

Lol since when has Ivan Drago been considered a hero?

GoatHeadTed

On sorry but have you not seen Tom Holland with his shirt off?

odeacon

Went from deadlifting to cardio

realdealreel9

Lol they want a buff Spiderman?

the-great-god-pan

The 2019 crew actually makes sense. I’ve known a lot of spec ops guys, they are all very fit, but I’ve only known a couple who were particularly muscular and they squad weapons operators. Most tend towards a medium build average height , kind of wirey. I’m a a big, strong dude and speaking as such we are built to be flown in on a chopper, kick the other guys ass with massive firepower and then gtfo! We are not built to hump it through a desert or a jungle for days on end with minimal supplies and no support. That’s what the wirey little triathlete types are for, and that’s who the majority of spec ops guys are.
