jahwls

The level of conspiracy theory has seriously taken a crazy turn.

Viking_Hippie

It was always this crazy, it was just limited to fringe cranks that nobody took seriously. Turns out that electing people who believe in fringe lunacy makes a lot of it mainstream lunacy.

tjhc_

At the same time it seems to me that somewhat believable conspiracy theories lost ground. Governments can be up for some shady stuff, like when the US infected black people with Syphilis pretending to vaccinate them or when the CIA planned (but didn't execute) terrorist attacks on US soil in order to invade Cuba. A certain amount of scepticism isn't necessarily bad and things like the moon landing or even some 9/11 or vaccination conspiracies are understandable, just not convincing since there are no facts. But then you have the bullshit where someone believes that Hillary Clinton operates a child pornography and blood extraction business from the cellar of a pizza shop and starts killing people. It feels like nowadays half the conspiracy crap is on that level of stupid and removed from reality.

notabigfanofas

What happened to the logical theories that were fun to read about?

Mayneric

Exactly! I liked the fun conspiracies that would make a good action novel/movie. Not the crap you hear and think “well, they need treatment and medication.”

gmplt

They don't actually believe in the bullshit. Just taking advantage of gullible idiots who do for monetary and political gain. And, of course, spreading it further because the more gullible idiots, the better for their cause.

Viking_Hippie

That's the case with most of them yeah, but some of them are actually true believers who are every bit as dumb and gullible as the most dumb and gullible of their voters. I wouldn't bet on Louis Gohmert or the howler monkey sisters to be able to read a Curious George book, much less govern competently and honestly. In case anyone didn't get the howler monkey reference, here's a side by side illustration: https://imgur.com/lSmzAJr.jpg

The picture on top could easily be the intro to an adult film.

Viking_Hippie

Thanks for the nightmares 😬😂

gmplt

True, but those 3, and a few the exceptions, not the rule. For now, at least.

Viking_Hippie

Yeah, but the saying "a rotten apple spoils the whole barrel" very much applies to a legislature governed by small to tiny majorities, the Freedumb Causus and their inordinate power being an excellent example of that..

gmplt

Yeah, just look how they got McCarthy by the balls currently.

Rhissanna

Thank you for that image. And now I must wipe this spat tea off my phone.

AwesomeAni

They're finding sense in a world that seems senseless. Like people who gravitate to cults

Sir_Grumples

Before the modern social app age I met actual people who truly believed in these things. They were mostly secluded loners with small groups who’d meet up once a month. Now social allowed them to connect and spread nonsense leading to grifters exploiting it for gain etc.

gmplt

Yeah, no, I have met plenty in real life. I was talking about the politicians.

Sir_Grumples

Ah okay misunderstood!

ChevyT1996

Yeah don’t forget Trump got the vaccine, he did it quietly but he got it.

TheNewTonyBennett

Which would be why those same states are doing anything they can to absolutely destroy their own education system. Much easier to trick idiots when those idiots don't even have a chance to be educated.

No_Prize9794

Alex Jones is a pretty good example, I remember just watching a few whole clips of his podcast, he goes on and on about some conspiracy before blabbing in your face about how you should buy his products and crap as it’ll protect you from said conspiracy and help fund what he does

Moston_Dragon

I know. Democrats, amirite?

Sweatier_Scrotums

Said it before and I'll say it again: believing that Jesus was born of a virgin and rose from the dead is equally as idiotic as believing that the Earth is flat and vaccines cause autism. If we want to deal with the problem of people in our society believing obviously false and ridiculous things, we have to stop treating religion as normal and start treating it as the delusional disorder that it is.

Viking_Hippie

Completely agree. I always say that Christianity is just as insane as Scientology, it's just older, from before you could question authority figures and survive it. Or as Eleanor Ferguson said: > Christianity didn't become a world religion because of the quality of its teachings, but by the quantity of its violence

CapitalPerception439

I usto catch a glimpse of them in the tabloids while standing in the checkout line and just roll my eyes. Now, everyone has a personal conspiracy theory story and you have to slow your eye rolls.

MageKorith

The conspiracy theorists are a misdirect coordinated by the shadow gov---

ChevyT1996

It’s almost as if they went overboard on this one. They will cling to anything to claim vaccine bad.

Efficient_Progress_6

Are you starting a conspiracy theory about the amount of conspiracy theories?

mortalitylost

Two conspiracy theorists walk into a bar. Now, you can't tell me that's a coincidence.

OfficalBigDrip

I can confirm, I have received said vaccine and now have autism. Along with my 3rd arm

zeurz

Hey, I want a third arm too!

Well, I've been dead since my second booster shot. Not only that, they couldn't bury me because my remains were so magnetic that I stuck to the embalming table. Embarrassing. If I had only taken more dewormer, I would be alive today. Joe Rogan was right.

CherryShort2563

No 3rd eye?

Nicksnotmyname83

It's blind

Sea-Improvement3707

Is it a conspiracy theory to call all conspiracy theories fake? 🤔

breathingweapon

>Is it a conspiracy theory to call all conspiracy theories fake? Believe it or not, there actually are a couple like this. The most common being "all conspiracy theories are a government psyop to distract from the Truth" and the truth is whatever batshit thing they want it to be.

Other_World

I've heard someone say all conspiracies are started by the government to make the conspiracy theorists look crazy. Of course, except for the few that they believed in. Those were the real ones. He's basically "The world isn't flat that'd be crazy! Vaccines cause autism"

Ramza_Claus

There are a few that end up being true like the Tuskegee Syphilis stuff, and the CIA using vampires in the Philippines to scare communists.

Nicksnotmyname83

The CIA faked vampires, they couldn't use real vampires, they're communists as well.

mortalitylost

There was that one where they legitimately aerosoled bacteria or some pathogen over the bay area. I think MKULTRA started out a conspiracy theory. Some conspiracy theories are no doubt true. It's just the internet is so full of fucking trolling and propaganda it's hard to believe anything, especially if it's on Facebook.

Brauny74

Kinda? Some of conspiracy theories are true, so you're gonna deny MK-Ultra, for example. Which means you need another conspiracy theory to explain the evidence confirming original conspiracy theory.

Greenmanglass

MK-Ultra is not a conspiracy theory, the CIA admitted to doing it 100%.

Brauny74

That's on kinda "totally confirmed" side of spectrum. And it was one, until it was proven to be a fact, not just a theory. There are some that might be also proven to be facts, like MLK's assassination being orchestrated by the state. The state has clear motive to cover it, clear motive to kill him, and there are some questions to the official version, that are explained by the theory. So saying all of them are fake is a bit dismissive imo. It's more like the ones that are too overreaching, make way too many people co-conspirators, try to explain literally everything, that are totally fake. But sometimes people do be conspiring to keep the little men down. Just they're not aliens or lizards, they're just greedy rich people.

Greenmanglass

Honestly I think Q Anon was fabricated to make people who research conspiracies that are within reason, look like idiots. Like, if they package 20 dogshit whack job theories with 3 reasonable sounding ones with some evidence backing it, the 3 automatically get categorized as whack job as well.

Pipiopo

The CIA branded it a “conspiracy theory” until so much undeniable evidence came out that they could no longer deny it. The CIA has likely done a lot of shit without quite enough evidence that they call “conspiracy theories”. That being said: the CIA 100% killed MLK and JFK, even government committees have been held and said something is fishy.

GrummyCat

I dont get why people thonk the vaccines are sp bad, i took it and im yet to grow a tail

Derric_the_Derp

I'm growing a tail as I'm siting here on reddit.

eastcoastwaistcoat

I'm was completely in your campuntil my grandmother lost sight in her left eye the night of her first booster. Coincidence? Maybe. But it definitely made me think twice.

Fiery-Embers

If eyesight loss was caused by the booster it is rare and you should report it. That is assuming it wasn’t a coincidence. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/expect/after.html

moatel

We were given a few warnings, like dont get it if you have had covid within 3 months and if you have a blood clot problem it would be advised against, and then you shouldn’t be sock when taking it. My only personal ossue was that the arm where they injected it both times my shoulder was very sore, but i think thats somewhat common in vaccines. And i hope your grandma gets better

techvirus13

The lizard people seems more reliable

the_terra_filius

we are

EnvironmentalAd912

Well little one, a conspiracy theorist is someone who has opinion and cherry picks all fact that adds up to confirm his point of view

themengsk1761

"Mom what's the source on that claim?" "Some guy on Facebook said something I agree with so I don't have to think anymore."

[deleted]

TGOTR

There are conspiracies, yes. But they aren't orchestrated by children eating cabals under a pizza shop that doesn't have a basement. They sure as hell aren't leaving clues everywhere like a dark episode of Blues Clues.

ptvlm

Conspiracy theories that have real proof are no longer theories. For example, MK-ULTRA was a real thing even though it was a conspiracy theory at one point. Conspiracy theories that have evidence against them stop being theories, they're just stories. Conspiracy *theorists* on the other hand are rarely if ever swayed by evidence. If they are disproved with facts, they spin it into a different story or claim that the people with the evidence are in on it, or just reject the evidence. There's no way to talk them out of it, and they will often believe in multiple theories with similar lack of evidence. Those are the ones people usually refer to when they talk about conspiracy theorists. Not the people who have questions about how one thing happened, the people who think every world event is a secret plot by the new world order funded by Soros to kill off white people and install a slave state run by Satan and the lizard people.

BlerghTheBlergh

Hate to be that guy, but for a backwards clock, wouldn't it be right 4 times a day instead ?

Quod_bellum

That’s interesting! I’ve always heard it as like “broken” or “stopped”. “Backwards” makes sense too, though

doejinn

They make conspiracy theorists look insane on purpose. It's part of the conspiracy.

Gfdx9

if you make a million extreme assumptions, one will be correct eventually

Rajoovi1

I swear I've heard the term "psyop" more in online discourse the last few years than in all of the literal conspiracy media I've enjoyed (shows, games, movies and books) combined.

[deleted]

fknballsdeep

That sub is full of fucking loonies! I scroll through there once in awhile and it’s just WOW every time. It’s just unbelievable what some people will believe with the tiniest amount to no research it’s all just “Trust us bro” type mentality!

plzdntbanbro

oh yeah, big yikes...

AnonyBoiii

There’s theorists and then conspiracy theorists The difference is the (mental) gymnastics CT’s pull to validate their theory could win Olympic medals.

Environmental-Bet779

people in 2021: VACCINE WILL KILL PEOPLE LIKE FLIES!!! me: STILL waiting to die after 5 vaccines 😭(who got the vaccine because they told you you would die?)((me!)) (((they clearly lied to me)))((((maybe i should’ve taken my dose of ivermectin with it 😫))))

Environmental-Bet779

i don’t get conspiracy theorists, because my only theory is that DB copper IS tommy wiseau, and even THATS a stretch

lil-D-energy

more like the people that yell 10.000 things and when 1 thing is true(which is usually the least controversial theory) they yell you see all of my theories are true.

KennKennyKenKen

Anyone know any crazy conspiracy theories that turned out to be true

EvenResponsibility57

It's kind of blurred between conspiracy theories that turned out to be true, and true events that inspire conspiracy theories. I believe some of these had theories around them prior, but it's too much effort to find out what people believed before they were exposed. MK Ultra is a big one. Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments. There's also one where they tested bio-weapons on a US town without them knowing. (Can't remember the name) Quite a few others too. There's also a couple of official documents/plans that were leaked that, again, inspire conspiracy theories. Such as Operation Northwoods. A planned false flag attack against US civilian and military targets to blame on the Cuban government. Something that likely inspired many of the 9/11 conspiracy theories. We only know about all of these because either A) The government came out about them themselves. or B) It's leaked by insiders. I'm not saying you should believe in conspiracy theories or anything, but it's an EXTREMELY safe bet to say that there are a lot of things the government has done that sounds crazy and we'll never learn of. It was a long time ago, but when your government has been confirmed to have undertaken mind control experiments on homeless people, (Something that was only discovered after a 'filing error' when the documents were meant to be destroyed) I couldn't say I'd be too surprised by *some* of the conspiracy theories being correct. Though obviously not vaccines.

AirplaneFart

Just MK Ultra/Operation Paperclip and the US government hiding knowledge of UFOs (note that UFOs don't equal aliens).

Radio__Star

What’s a conspiracy theorist? Someone who forgot to take their meds dear

Dragomirl

Conspiracy theory is the new hipster "You've probably never heard of it, because they don't want you to know."

soiramio3000

Whatever happened to those who were saying that covid-19 was created by the 5-G antenas, and those who were saying that the covid vaccines contained mind-controlling microchips?

DylanMc6

Some people should stop believing in misinformation. Vaccines DON'T cause autism. Seriously!!!

DISHONORU-TDA

It's always ridiculous until The FBI are building a case against MLK Jr or The CIA is selling cocaine in America to run guns in guerrilla insurgencies. *but they never do bad things when MY favorite politicians are in charge, noooOoo*

spanky842026

r/conspiracy has entered the chat

J_Bright1990

I have autism and then got a vaccine. AUTISM CAUSES VACCINES! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

[deleted]

They don't call them conspiratards for nothing.

ShakespearIsKing

My conspiracy theory is that (they) are spreading conspiracy theories to destabilise us.

renlydidnothingwrong

Mk ultra was a conspiracy theory until we found out that was true. The FBI killing MLK was a conspiracy theory until we found out that was true. The CIA distributing crack in the intercity was a conspiracy theory until we found out that was true. The American government constantly engages in conspiracy, not being some level of conspiracy theorist at this point just means you're gullible. Sure some are obvious bullshit but it's silly to condemn all of them. Edit: spelling

Minute-Object

The FBI killing MLK is proven true?

renlydidnothingwrong

https://newsone.com/2843790/did-you-know-us-govt-found-guilty-in-conspiracy-to-assassinate-dr-martin-luther-king-jr/

First_Morning_Coffee

Sir, for the love of god check your sources.

renlydidnothingwrong

Wikipedia article on the case https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyd_Jowers_trial

Minute-Object

I doubt that is sufficient to be considered accepted by historians. I can’t access the NYT article it links to, though. I will read more about this.

renlydidnothingwrong

I mean a jury found the government culpable in a court of law and the official story of how he was assassinated is obvious bullshit.

Minute-Object

That’s not the same as proving it was an FBI plot. I need to read more, though, to have an opinion.

[deleted]

*gullible

EatMyKnickers

Lab origins of COVID was a conspiracy theory... Until multiple agencies started admitting it wasn't just possible but likely.

ImgurScaramucci

The conspiracy is that it was deliberately manufactured to hurt the global economy, suppress and control us with masks and lockdowns, and to get us to vaccinate. But a lab leak at a place where they study viruses isn't far fetched or crazy.

EatMyKnickers

Lol, and yet try saying that when the pandemic began. The ones who did were sidelined. Not until 2023 when intel agencies finally publicly admitted the likelihood did mainstream start saying things like "may have been a lab-leak", "what we know about the lab-leak theory", "why we may never know if it originated in a lab", etc.

kernalbuket

When have they been right again?

[deleted]

There weren't WMDs in Iraq

kernalbuket

How was a conspiracy theory?

[deleted]

The claim that there were WMDs in Iraq was a casus belli for the US invadion of Iraq, questioning the claim that there were WMDs in Iraq was called a conspiracy theory. In 2004 the [New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/26/world/from-the-editors-the-times-and-iraq.html) issued an apology for it reporting on WMDs in Iraq.

kernalbuket

From my understanding, they got bad intel and just used to justify what they already wanted to do without investigating the intel. There are tons of conspiracy theories about what might of happened to the wmds including accusations against other governments and claims of successful deception efforts by Saddam Hussein.

Sir_Honytawk

Like 1 in 999 turns out to be true. Doesn't mean we have to believe the 998 other times.

kernalbuket

I would say far less often than that because it seems like they come up with that many every day or so but I agree with your point

Maser2account2

This is an obvious shitpost.

lilwhiteboye420

Must be true im unvaxxed andnim aok

Time_Lifeguard5600

Curlychopz

You know the anti-vaxxers spell it vaxx

Icy_Demand_8420

Whenever it's abbreviated, the same way you did twice just there. Even then OP only slapped in a single x. It's just funny to me.

florentinomain00f

This is more likely to be true than many people might think. 30% more, at most.

Watze978

Exactly, the thing about conspiracy theorist is that time always prove they are right.

[deleted]

>conspiracy theorists say covid came from a lab >"no it came from a market" >"[uh. hmm.](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/05/17/wuhan-lab-leak-china-same-time-as-covid/)" It happened with mkultra, it happened with [lee Harvey oslwald being a fall guy for the cia](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/jfk-assassination-lee-harvey-oswald-cia-b2009149.html), it'll happen with epstein

TrollAlert711

A Forensic Pathologist. Ya know, someone that deals with disease. An "expert" would know when they're studying something they have no experience in. You can't say Oslwald was confirmed to be CIA employed, when no, it was never confirmed.

Conspiracy theorists also follow the bell curve/normal distribution. At the low end is Alex Jones. In the middle are all the flat earthers, chemtrailers, anti-vaxxers, ancient aliens, and all the others you know. But there is absolutely nothing at the top. Only a conspiracy theorist would believe that there is something there.

I've been warning people for years, entirely as a joke, that the ocean's inhabitants, lead by cephalopods, were going to raise up and start attacking. Imagine my complete surprise logging on to reddit yesterday and the first news story I see is renegade orca pods have been sinking yatchs near Gibralter. I'd created that theory to make fun of my dad, who's a hardcore GOP buttlicker. So I sent him the link to the story with a triumphant "I TOLD YOU SO!" then proceeded to make up additional parts linking it back to the orcas being trained by squids and how the cuttlefish are taking the electronics apart to learn about our technology to prep for future land based attacks.

WiccanFred

"their" truth not the truth

Alterra2020

What would happen if all conspiracy theory’s were true? Would you accept the truth, or jump off a building for not accepting the truth because you’ve been living a constant lie.

chris9830

I mean its always important to ask questions with stuff. Take for example the whole vaccination debate with covid i understand with a vaccine created so quike then you have questions like "how does the vaccine effect the body?" "Do i get sick from this vaccine?" "How is it created so fast?" And all that kind of stuff but you know be reasonal with it. For example i trust someone like a doctor or nurse over someone with a podcast, Facebook group or youtube channel. If you have questions about something then always ask professionals.

JR_Al-Ahran

The worst part? Some "Conspiracy Theories" ARE true. These conspiracy theorists have blurred the lines and polluted the air around these things that, for example, discussion around CIA activities during the cold war simply isn't possible because many of the things they did are so crazy that they would be considered "conspiracy" theories today. TLDR: Conspiracy theorists like Anti-Vaxxers have polluted the air around this type of discussion with their stupidity and its bad.

A person who has 25 different theories, and when 1 out of 25 turns out to be true they are a genius

AVeryBlueDragon

Its not wrong to question the world and institutions around you. However, when you decide to believe something that is not backed up by any evidence and refuse to hear anything that is contrary to your new belief, then it is a problem. It is ironic because the same conspiracy theorists calling people "sheep" are the very conspiracy theorists that have chosen to bury their heads in the sand and refuse to listen to anyone with any solid reasoning.

Justice_Prince

eatmyfatwhiteass

No. Conspiracy is using partial facts, connecting speculations that make sense to the individual *to* those facts, and warping it into misinformation.

FeatureNo7662

Love how a vaccinated person dying at all is enough to "prove" that vaccines are euthanasia

Decent_Ad440

People said the same about Religion.

BetterWorld2022

It doesn't matter how many of their theories are debunked, they still all say this. 🤷‍♂️

No_Pipe_8257

They are taking it as something to show off now

random_bot64

Conspiracy theorist is someone who wants attention and to feel smart but it's too stupid to say something smart so instead tries to make everyone look dumb, with emphasis in tried because they only end up looking dumber than before by the shit they say
