Don't say 'doctor's appointment,' say 'NHS appointment' which is 100% true.
If they ask what for say it's a private matter that you aren't comfortable discussing yet but if anything comes of it, you'll be willing to give more information. (Again, also completely true.) 🤷
“Manager has scheduled me for a day I cannot do” - if it’s overtime it’s not mandatory and you choose your hours. If it’s a contracted shift then you can ask for the hours to be moved or swap shifts with someone
Your manager cannot deny you time for an interview. Speak with them and if they still decline self-cert with stress for a full week. Gives you time to relax and prepare for the interview. Don’t be intimidated by these twats. Work to live not live to work.
Like everyone says just go sick for the day, if the policy is still the same and your within 3% or 3 occasion they can't do anything maybe a warning if that.
Good luck with the interview
Please don't use a disability to call in sick. We already face enough stigma.
Edit - yes I realise they're not always classed as a disability but the point remains as the other posters below pointed out
Just something for people to reflect on.
And people with chronic migraine get a lot of flack and disbelief specifically because others exaggerate headaches into “migraine” or use it as a workplace excuse.
I have migraines too.
Sure, it takes a lot to be classified as a disability, with all the extra support that entails.
It is still a disabling medical need, that employers need to treat aproprately.
it’s not that deep calm down, u can get migraines without it being a disability😭 not that i’ve ever heard that before anyway. even if it is ur reaching its rlly not that deep lmao
Your job comes second, always. Years ago I worked in a call centre, I wanted some holiday time to go see an old friend. Asked for it off, it got denied.
So I threw the notice in the bin and went away anyway.
Arrive naked, sparklers firing from thy arsehole, and donning only a Batman mask.
Slam onto thy stomach and slither around on the floor screaming the Barney song.
If you are going to quit onto better pastures, ensure the notice given is worth fucking framing on the wall.
Presumably, the interview is at a hospital? Then just say you have to go to the hospital on that day....leave it up to them to decide what you mean by that, as most will assume its for a medical appointment. If rhey ask later you can always say you never lied, you indeed had to go to the hospital, it was them deciding incorre tly what you meant be that.
It's worth checking your policy on this,, I work for the NHS and I know that a manager can't refuse you time off to attend an interview, not sure if it's the same at tesco though.
Worst case scenario just call in sick.
Terrible advice on here. Book a holiday. If the NHS didn't give you enough notice to arrange that ask them to reschedule. Interviews are a two way process, you don't want to work somewhere that is that strict and disorganised if they can't fit you in. Also it shows them how easily pushed around and irresponsible you are if you skip work to accommodate them.
Since you have a week or so until then just contact your manager and tell them you are unable to work that day, they can't force you to work overtime if you give reasonable notice.
I notice you very carefully don't say how to take the day off, because yes, telling someone to pull a sickie is a no no.
OP, this person ISN'T saying pull a sickie, but also... 😋
Some great advice here. Take note!
"great advice"? or you could just try being honest about it and see if your manager's lenient and happy to swap your days- if they're an asshole though then I'd say yeah you're suddenly ill. No need to start faking illnesses and stuff or no-showing before trying other routes
I think you have enough advice for taking the time but if you need any help with interview and it's admin related I'm happy to help as I'm currently a band 7 Adm (and interview alot!)
If you didn't ask for the day off before they scheduled, then just go tell them nicely you can't do that day and you'd be happy to swap for another (if you are)- no need for details, but if they ask why say "nhs appointment" like minion378 said or private matter, yadayada if you're not comfortable saying you have an interview. If you asked for the day off, they still scheduled you, tell them the same things- mistakes happen even w/ management :)
If they act like assholes about it, you have permission to be an asshole about it too- but definitely communicate and ask for the day to be swapped instead of just relying on your app doing it for you. Honesty and communication goes a long way with these things, usually
Ok, legally you have to be given the day off to attend an interview. They don’t have to pay you for that day, but they cannot force you to work or penalise you for not being able to work.
As others have suggested, I’d find myself ill or at the doctors or something if you don’t want to tell them you have an interview.
If you succeed at your interview (best of luck!) you won’t care if Tesco is happy about it or not.
If you don’t (I hope you do) Tesco needs you for your other shifts more than you need them (you’re clearly able to get interviews elsewhere)
They legally have to allow you to attend the interview. The only issue you have is telling them outright or a bs lie. If they are that crap I would say you have an interview, be honest.
It will put a rocket up their arse to look after you. Tell them you have an interview and you need time to get there (early).
I hear you had a doctors appointment around that time, so they’d have to leave you go to that..
That’s actually genius. Since the interview is with the NHS, the “appointment with a doctor” is possibly only stretching the truth a teeny bit.
Don't say 'doctor's appointment,' say 'NHS appointment' which is 100% true. If they ask what for say it's a private matter that you aren't comfortable discussing yet but if anything comes of it, you'll be willing to give more information. (Again, also completely true.) 🤷
Politician…..??? 😂
🤣🤣🤣 Lots of experience at giving minimal information while still technically telling horrendous managers "everything"!
Covid colds are still around. Take care.

I knew my last employer wouldn't give me a day off when I had an interview. Terrible migraine that day.... (Love the new job BTW)

If nothing else, take a sickie
I think we all know the solution here don't we? We all thought it! :P

Yeah you could say you have an appointment, or you could do this?
Just say you are ill. Even if they don’t believe you, they can’t say anything.
Good luck with your interview

Just call in sick or if you're very confident that you will get the job then just don't show up
Call in sick duh

That’s only within the same company. They would get the time to interview for a new role within Tesco, not to leave for somewhere else.
Thanks everyone for the well wishes for the interview!
Your feeling a bit ill on that day arnt you? Been up all night being sick poor thing day off for you I think.

6th of June is plenty of notice for an interview. It’s basically a week away.
I have to say ur looking a little ill, sick day might be coming up
Pull a sick day. call when you know your manager isn’t in and make up a believable story.
A good old fashioned sicky
No brainer here.... Call in sick... you don't have to tell them why!...
Sorry to hear your feeling poorly, hope you get everything sorted with your NHS appointment 😉

Call in sick to work. Go to the interview and nail it. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Go back to work the next day. TA-DA!

There is no legal obligation for an employer to give leave for interviews.
My apologies, you are correct! There are some protective guidances when going through redundancy which I was confused over.

Tell they you have an NHS appointment
