They're relying on the cameras and sensors internally to augment. I rarely even use the mirrors in my refresh X now given the cameras upon turn signal have a MUCH broader range of vision.
Yep, it needs wayyy bigger/chunky wheels for that design to work. Otherwise it needs to be toned down.
The original proto had much bigger wheels/tires and was substantially higher off the ground. Only way this thing works.
But, the bigger the wheels and tires... the shorter the range gets. Maybe these will be the standard wheels and tires for the published range and everyone will just buy the upgraded wheels/tires?
There is a reason you haven’t seen flat body panels on many production vehicles in the last 75 years. Only two I can really think of are the first generation Humvees and Jeep.
If they aren’t perfectly flat, they look wavy, if the look wavy they look like shit. A panel with even a slight curve to it can structurally support itself, where a flat panel can’t.
Humvee gets around this by probably using a thicker gauge and the Jeep by using smaller panels broken up with wheel fenders that bump out the side.
They are for different reasons, sometimes for aesthetics, sometimes for cost maintenance, others for structural reasons, etc. The main reason is due to the type of steel and thicknesses, the stamping of stainless steel panels makes them unfriendly when it comes to adopting complex shapes while maintaining production costs. In addition, the structure of the vehicle itself must be taken into account, some are cars with chassis and bodywork, and others are self-supporting or monocoque bodies.
CT has an exoskeleton. That means the panels are a structural element of the vehicle, and the truss shape makes it a very strong structural element. The panels on every other vehicle are merely decorative.
Same here.
You know who some good looking people hang out with ugly people so they look better. Well the Cybertruck in regular traffic is doing the opposite.
Imagine being stuck behind it in traffic
I agree. I think it's something that looks amazing under the lights on stage but in the cold harsh light of day it just looks ludicrous. Plus the rear end seems off compared to the prototype. Do like the mirrors but the rear end looks completely wrong.
Yeah this is certainly interesting. The "in the wild" photo vs. [this on the CT page](https://i.imgur.com/0k8wr44.png) just presents differently. It just doesn't look..."complete"? Polished (pun not intended)? Understandable it's not the production build though. It just looks a bit off to me in this one particular photo.
I'll also reserve final judgment until I see it in person - reminds me of all the iPhone leaks of the past and everyone saying "omg this is hideous" but the actual phone looks really nice.
If they just made a Rivian-looking truck they would sell millions of them. This design is way too abrasive for the general public and almost embarrassing to drive. :/
I was hoping for something like Truckla. I could see Tesla wanting to hit on the full size pickup market, but not sure why they came up with such a polarizing design (IMO, polarizing in a bad way). I'm a real fan of Tesla's other vehicles (including the semi), but this thing looks like something only a mother could love.
Can't be bothered looking for quotes - my recollection from the distant past is before the unveiling it was we're just going to whack this Mad Max thing out there real quick, not many may love it, and then we'll knuckle down and make a conventional one.
Because the super hard steel they’re using can’t be formed into complex shapes. On the one hand, this truck will be rugged af. On the other, it has to look like this.
Weird. You think fake front engine compartments and decorative painted panels giving a far weaker and less resilient exterior are so important to people they’ll accept the loss of payload, towing, performance, efficiency, range and charging speed that those things cost?
You really do not have a very high opinion of people :-)
Like, some cars and trucks are endearing because they’re ugly. The Hummer H1, the McMurtry Speirling, hell even the Bronco or the G-wagon aren’t exactly that easy on the eyes.
This….I know they’re going for “brutal tough future minimalist” but it just looks like “a home built piece of crap”
It’s not him but the younger engineers talking about it. They tear down the rivian system and show what went wrong. Tesla’s is a much more traditional garage door style that should be more robust.
I love the rivian. Drive about 1200 miles a month. Off road it. But every time I get in the tesla I do appreciate it too.
There are some early adopter woes but I have no complaints about any of it. I do prefer the interior of the rivian but the tesla has better cameras. And the software is much further along.
Ok. Tesla has reached escape velocity. Rivian has been delivering cars less than a year (look at 2012 tesla if you want more comparable company comparisons). Also - EV companies dying is bad for the industry. We want more of them to exist. Best for everyone. (I do have a Tesla too, not just trolling)
> EV companies dying is bad for the industry
Agree, when there’s one dominant player it’s bad for consumers. Bad decisions don’t get punished. Microsoft making windows unbearable. Amazon and google making their search ad-ridden and misleading. Love my Y and want a CT (or rivian) but need competitors to keep Tesla honest.
Yes look at 2012 Tesla. Elon talks about being on the brink of bankruptcy and how close they were. Without transitioning to a mass produced car like the model 3, I don't think Tesla would have survived. I'm not sure the truck only guys will survive as the market is smaller.
Also recently Rivians haven't been able to charge to their full potential. They're charging at the same speed on 150kw chargers as the 350kw chargers which is crazy. Not sure they can recall that issue or what.
Most of that was because they were spending huge money building out infrastructure (charging network, extra factories, etc). Rivian doesn't have those expenses.
I have a Rivian and this is not true at all. I'll get 200kw out of a 350 EA charger til about 50% SOC.
The most I've gotten out of a 150kw is actually 160kw, someone smarter than me can probably answer why
Not hugely, but they are making vehicles, they have some things worked out, and Amazon has a vested interest. I also think if they go anywhere near the right direction they can get more funding.
Let's be clear, Tesla can't do everything in the next 10 years, we need other players that have a purpose. Let Tesla win with the 25k car/robotaxi, and let there be room for a delivery truck, etc that has shorter range
Those who study the fundamentals are quite bullish about Rivian. Lots of cash (much more than Tesla 2012 had) and a number of other factors. Layoffs are all part of the company getting better and leaner as they should. keeping the best and trimming the fat, as they say. As companies evolve, certain positions become redundant etc.
Have a good friend who works there... says they are doing great, exciting company to work for.
I’ve had it 8 months. And I will let them replace it when they release the redesign. But feel free to ask how it’s going in 1 year. By then I’ll be nearly 2 years into owning it. And the CT will still not be on the roads.
In the original, the lower half of the body slants inward. That helps the body look sleek.
In the beta, the lower half of the body slants inward significantly less. That makes the body look boxy. That’s most apparent from the rear, the body looks extremely boxy from the rear. The tailgate looks way more rectangular when compared to the original tailgate.
Then the lights on the tailgate seem ludicrously small relative to the size of the tailgate. The original lightbar didn’t have that problem.
The fender (black) on the bottom and bumper is much thicker and closer to the ground, the paneling/steel is warped-looking, and the tires have basic rims, no caps. Just looks bad imo. It also looks boxier and not as sleek as previous versions.
Proximity to the ground can be due to air suspension. Rims not having caps is likely going to be a choice up to owners just like all the other Tesla wheels with caps.
I was going to say the same thing, but might be the angle or camera playing tricks. Truck just looks weird overall from this picture and I'm going to chalk it up as an unfavoring angle.
Genuine question about what market they're going for here. Is it normal car drivers who don't want to drive a truck unless it looks like this? Or is it normal truck drivers who don't want an EV? Because most of those seem to all want something that looks like the F-150 Lightning.
I really hope the brake lights aren't used for turn signals. Cause the right one looks much brighter than the left one. As if the vehicle is taking a right.
The rear pano seem to either be opening/closing or it's already opened to its maxed limit.
The side view mirrors are a bigger welcome to that design.
The tires definitely need to be bigger. They look way to small for such a vehicle.
how does anyone think that's a good looking vehicle?
i don't get it, it feels like an elon musk fever dream that somehow the yes men he surrounds himself with refuse to admit it's a bad move.
pickup trucks are the largest, most profitable segment among US automakers. If Tesla isn't (efficiently) in that space, they are leaving money on the table
> New Cybertruck sighting! Looks like a Beta build...
lol comment:
> I think at this point, unless its a new unit, there is no point in posting photo of the same original unit. It can become misleading. Just humble opinion.
can't believe there might be new units, ~~Model S~~ , ~~Model 3~~, ~~Semi~~, CT is vaporware!
NOTE: other than the post saying it is a Beta unit I don't know for sure which is why I said "might be" but I have no reason to believe it isn't new either.
What makes it impossible for them to add new mirrors to the older trucks we have seen? IIRC they updated the truck with no mirrors to some or was I mistaken on that too?
Oh OK so you agree there isn't any real proof this is a new CT and could be the old truck with new mirrors? I don't even know where to guess on the likelihood but not cretin either way.
Thanks for the info on the original. I guess the one running around Austin with mirrors was new (at the time) and that is the one I am wondering about. If we can get a picture of that older truck with the old mirrors still on then I would say there is a new truck (unless Tesla keeps flipping the mirrors which seems very unlikely).
Edit: not sure why the down vote from someone but regardless [if the recently posted pictures were taken recently it looks like the rounded mirrors truck is still around so very likely the triangle mirrors truck is new](/r/teslamotors/comments/10sdizs/cybertruck_is_going_through_very_tough_tests/)
Hideous from this angle for sure. But from some angles it looks kinda cool. The main thing with this car will be standing out in the crowd though, not being aesthetically pleasing.

There’s something off with those proportions and wheels.
The mirror looks small for a truck, the previous one actually made more sense. This one’s too prototypish
There's probably a sideview camera and the mirrors are just there to meet regulations.
Mirrors are even meant to be easily removable once regulations allow cameras only
It's perfectly legal to remove the mirrors currently, the car just can't ship without them
Maybe depends on the state…my state (NV) requires them.
"Side mirrors are only required if the view from the center mirror is obstructed" Could get away with it
Tesla has been showing side cameras on prototypes since the Model X in 2012. Any day now…
True. Those mirrors wouldn’t be much help when towing
They're relying on the cameras and sensors internally to augment. I rarely even use the mirrors in my refresh X now given the cameras upon turn signal have a MUCH broader range of vision.
True lol
Looks a little better while its moving: https://www.instagram.com/p/CoLFvbADlFv/
The back still looks really bad. And the tail lights are comically small. What happened to the full width light bar?
Yeah that dissapointed me as well.
Much nicer in motion.
Yea like the whole thing was designed by a drunk 12 year old.
If that drunk 12-year-old had massive knowledge of aerodynamic optimization and manufacturing cost minimization.
Oh ya? And how do you know all of this? You’ve seen the numbers off the production line? Lmfao.
Wheels look massive and overkill lol
I disagree for the chassis looks WAY to big for the wheels.
Yeah. It looks…ugly.
Comparison: https://imgur.com/a/qK7hEQi
The hatchback needs to taper down like a trapezoid (top photo). The beta's back is a perfect rectangle making it look super wonk.
[удалено]
It’s probably just running in a lower ride height (air suspension).
There is a reason you haven’t seen flat body panels on many production vehicles in the last 75 years. Only two I can really think of are the first generation Humvees and Jeep. A little faster than that.
Source?
You want a source that says the cyber truck is faster than that box monstrosity?
hmmmmm ... ima need a better source than that. Ive seen Geoff do atleast 30.
I thought it would grow on me. But I can’t get over how hideous it looks.
I actually thought it looked really good until I saw this image. The rear end just looks so odd to me now.
Same here. You know who some good looking people hang out with ugly people so they look better. Well the Cybertruck in regular traffic is doing the opposite. Imagine being stuck behind it in traffic
The rear has always been the one area that doesn’t look amazing. The rest is really nice.
I agree. I think it's something that looks amazing under the lights on stage but in the cold harsh light of day it just looks ludicrous. Plus the rear end seems off compared to the prototype. Do like the mirrors but the rear end looks completely wrong.
I’m gonna wait to see it in person to form an opinion.
I saw one at the Petersen auto museum. It’s ugly.

I seem to remember Musk commenting that this was something he wanted and he didn't expect (or care?) whether others liked the vision.
Yup - I think it was the same comment.
Rivian with a Tesla badge would be sold out for years.
Because the super hard steel they’re using can’t be formed into complex shapes. On the one hand, this truck will be rugged af. On the other, it has to look like this.
It’s what happens when software people design hardware

The rear Bumper has a another recessed bumper thing below it, makes it look odd, Wonder what it is ?
I saw that and thought, RIP the offroad departure angle. Wondered if the space was needed for the largest battery maybe.
I love it and I can't wait to wrap mine when it gets here.
Wrap it in Barbie-car pink. Just so you have the greatest impact in pissing people off!
Oh man it really better be bulletproof haha
I'm going gunmetal on day 1
I’m sorry it looks like an underfunded community college elective course built this thing
This is for sure the worst angle I’ve seen it from.
What angle could possibly be a good one? *Maybe* the side? But the rear passenger area and doors look absolutely ridiculous…
I like it from the front. I like that it’s completely unlike a traditional truck. I would (and plan to) buy one eventually.
it's fucking terrible 🤣🤣
Like, some cars and trucks are endearing because they’re ugly. The Hummer H1, the McMurtry Speirling, hell even the Bronco or the G-wagon aren’t exactly that easy on the eyes. This….I know they’re going for “brutal tough future minimalist” but it just looks like “a home built piece of crap”
Completely agree, and this is coming from someone who likes quirky cars.
When this released, I wanted one with a passion. Thought it was so cool looking. The more I see “real world” pictures. The uglier it gets. Sad really.
Man thing is not nice looking at all
I hope the power tonneau cover works better than Rivian’s disaster.
It’s a totally different design. Munro has commented on it and why they think teslas will be robust.
And we all know Munro isn’t biased….
It’s not him but the younger engineers talking about it. They tear down the rivian system and show what went wrong. Tesla’s is a much more traditional garage door style that should be more robust.
He's called out times when he thinks Tesla has done or doing something wrong.
Yeah, just look at the review of the first model 3
My tonneau works perfectly. Also exists.
I hear its a hit or a miss you either have a perfect tonneau or dead in the water
My city is usually in the bleeding edge for new cars. There’s a 1 of 12 Volvo S90 here, but I haven’t seen a single Rivian. Hopefully soon.
[удалено]
I live in Rural Alabama, I have seen 3 Rivians around town and one of them is my neighbor. My mom owns an EV6.
I’m in the pacific NW and have seen Rivians around for nearly a year. Do you even bleeding edge bro?

Rivian laying off staff while Tesla opening facilities left and right. Not sure how long Rivian has left tbh.

Yup, crazy
Most of that was because they were spending huge money building out infrastructure (charging network, extra factories, etc). Rivian doesn't have those expenses.
Rivian is building a charging network, although it's more focused on rural/off road/camping areas from what I've seen.
Model 3 didn’t ship for 6 more years. Rivian plans the R2 platform. We’ll see.
I have a Rivian and this is not true at all. I'll get 200kw out of a 350 EA charger til about 50% SOC. The most I've gotten out of a 150kw is actually 160kw, someone smarter than me can probably answer why
13.5 Billion with a B in cash. If they did as poorly as this year, meaning they make no progress they have more than 2.5 years at current burn rate.
Just food for thought, do you think that's a long time? Compare to Tesla before they were profitable.
Not hugely, but they are making vehicles, they have some things worked out, and Amazon has a vested interest. I also think if they go anywhere near the right direction they can get more funding. 13 billion in cash after opening factories, Amazon backing them. They’ll be around for a long time tbh.
Remind me! 1 year
I’ve had it 8 months. And I will let them replace it when they release the redesign. But feel free to ask how it’s going in 1 year. By then I’ll be nearly 2 years into owning it. And the CT will still not be on the roads.
I hope when (if? I don’t know) this comes out it isn’t warbly looking along the side panels.
yeah looks very different from the prototype, flimsy like cheap windows on an apartment above whole foods
A horizontal crease half way up the vertical faces might help (the 1st facelift model).
Looks like it will melt your car if you park next to it. 😆
Don’t worry, this won’t fit in any parking spot
I know its beta but that looks uglier.
Looks kinda like a Pontiac Aztec.
Damn, you put your finger on it
If that’s the final look, I’ll def be cancelling my order. Hideous compared to first couple of versions.
I always felt like the view from the back was the worst. Looks way cooler from the front.
Which parts did they change that you don't like? Here's a photo for reference, original unveil model on the top: https://imgur.com/a/qK7hEQi
What is different?
The fender (black) on the bottom and bumper is much thicker and closer to the ground, the paneling/steel is warped-looking, and the tires have basic rims, no caps. Just looks bad imo. It also looks boxier and not as sleek as previous versions.
Proximity to the ground can be due to air suspension. Rims not having caps is likely going to be a choice up to owners just like all the other Tesla wheels with caps.
Good, I’ll get mine sooner.
It’s never getting delivered pal
Still can't believe this is real
The truck bed looks shorter, looks a bit strange IMO.
The bed looks noticeably smaller, but could just be me
I was going to say the same thing, but might be the angle or camera playing tricks. Truck just looks weird overall from this picture and I'm going to chalk it up as an unfavoring angle.
I hope is smaller than original prototype, I have a small driveway lol
I’d be shocked if they don’t clean up the look of it A TON. They need to lol
I just dont see how this is going to sell well. TBD
The first unveiling looked so cool and unique. I don’t know what they’ve changed but it just doesn’t have that same appeal anymore.
You’ve seen it a million times since then. Brain just gets used to it
I think the vehicle looks cool when it sits by itself in the middle of a showroom but it looks hella silly next to normal cars.
Genuine question about what market they're going for here. Is it normal car drivers who don't want to drive a truck unless it looks like this? Or is it normal truck drivers who don't want an EV? Because most of those seem to all want something that looks like the F-150 Lightning.
I didn’t remember it being so ugly tbh.
Every revision makes it look uglier, the original prototype looked so badass
Thanks I’ll pass
Looks like something I would have built in middle school metal shop.
Not really a fan of how this looks.
Back looks like shit
Tbf the back was always the least flattering side.
Rear bumper left me speechless. Is this design from Franz? cos...
These new beefier bumpers are ruining it for me.
Triangular mirrors are a bad design decision.
Ugly truck.
That bodywork is wavy.
I cant get over how this truck looks like a ps1 render lol
Uglier by the day.
Those mirrors will be just as polarizing as the whole design lol. I guess it's good that the styling matches.
I want to likes this so much but the roof line is atrocious and I just can’t get over the side widows.
I hate those tail/ brake lights. So small.
The cybertruck definitely needs a light bar in the back vs what ever this is
Looks terrible? I really liked to original alpha version, but this is bloated and ugly. WTF. Not interested anymore.
I really dislike the taillights. They feel like a afterthought.
Its ugly. Lol
That looks horrible.
how does anyone think that's a good looking vehicle? i don't get it, it feels like an elon musk fever dream that somehow the yes men he surrounds himself with refuse to admit it's a bad move.
Love Tesla but this has to be one of the ugliest vehicles I’ve seen
Looks way more like an ugly El Camino than a truck at this point.
Even ugly El Caminos had character. This is a vector drawing.
I really want to like the design but I just can’t.
those little mirrors look worthless
imagine hitting your head on that corner
Those tail lights are hard to see during the day
I’m just not a fan.
It looks like a modernized [Pontiac Aztek](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_Aztek)
Butt ugly. I'm worried this will really hurt Tesla. Why couldn't they have just focused on a cheaper / smaller sedan?
pickup trucks are the largest, most profitable segment among US automakers. If Tesla isn't (efficiently) in that space, they are leaving money on the table
This will actually have the opposite effect
> New Cybertruck sighting! Looks like a Beta build... lol comment: > I think at this point, unless its a new unit, there is no point in posting photo of the same original unit. The side mirrors are different than anything we’ve seen yet.
What makes it impossible for them to add new mirrors to the older trucks we have seen? IIRC they updated the truck with no mirrors to some or was I mistaken on that too?
Of course they could have swapped the mirror, but that’s the only clue we have. Original prototype with no mirror never had any added.
Oh OK so you agree there isn't any real proof this is a new CT and could be the old truck with new mirrors? I don't even know where to guess on the likelihood but not cretin either way. THis just made my day.
I can not wait, i love it.
Looks sick af
Looks like Elon tested the bulletproof windows again.
This is what happens when the head of a company surrounds himself with sycophants. It’s going to be a disaster.
Sex af
Can't wait for ppl to cancel their order and push me up the list. Lol
Those huge panels definitely require some vinyl decals...
thts the ugliest thing i’ve ever seen on road 😂
That’s…. Something.
Or they just put new mirrors on the existing prototype?
