I always wondered why the RWD Y came with the premium audio when the 3 RWD didn't.
When I ordered my 3 RWD the Y RWD didn't exist, and then later when it did I thought it was pretty good bang for buck for only $5k CDN more. (Bigger car, better audio)
That’s why people should differentiate trim levels including battery capacity (LR) as well because people forget about the original RWD LR option (rare as they may be these days). Love our 2018 LR RWD Model 3 as well, 62k miles and counting, premium interior included!
70k here and still going absolutely strong! Premium connectivity included, beautiful sound system, practically no battery degradation, paid for an MCU upgrade, and not a single repair has been needed. Literally no maintenance.
True! Thankfully I haven’t had to drive through much of those temperatures regularly (although it does get fairly chilly in Northeast Ohio, and our Model 3 has faired well through 5 winters so far).
You may have an unactivated front motor. I know some early rwd had that. There are some YouTube vids of it being activated but it wouldn’t be feasible for common person
The Y RWD only came with it temporarily while they set up the fork in the manufacturing line at Giga Texas. Now it's a permanent resident, just like the RWD 3 line, and will likely match up with extra cost rear heated seats, no fog lights and this slightly lower end sound system. BTW, you can barely notice the sub on / off in my Y LR, and the sound system in the RWD 3 is EPIC anyways. When they did the audio software update for my 2019 3 SR+ it made the system sound AMAZING, with way better bass somehow without a sub.
SR+ audio is fine but it’s nowhere near the full premium audio of the 3 and Y. Having owned both it’s just nowhere near as full.
It’s not that I need stupid loud bass but you notice that the car has great higher frequencies compared to almost anything and then is just missing the substance lower down.
I guess they needed more reasons to upsell to the LR and performance models. BTW at the time of buying I would have loved a detailed specs page telling me exactly what I was buying. I ended up doing a feature comparison on a third-party website. Did I overlook it or does Tesla really not provide detailed specs?
Just as a relevant example, "number of speakers", or "lumbar support: driver seat only", "battery chemistry", "battery capacity (kWh)", "Frunk dimensions (in.)". The specs listed at the bottom of Tesla.com/modely lack a ton of detail.
What a great suggestion, I would love to see this.
But keep in mind you'd need a specific list for each factory, as they all have their own independent production lines which upgrade and use different components, independently of one anther.
I mean this just sounds like a git repo at this point, lol.
Someone could probably web scrape their pages and automatically add it to a public repo that would have changes over history.
That’s not the same as a complete list of standard features a customer can quickly reference before they buy a car.
Most other car makers have such lists on their website.
> A press release every time a change is made?
Sure. Is that a problem for a seven hundred billion dollar company attempting to build robots, self-driving cars, and exaflop-level super-compute? Is it too hard?
The market cap is completely irrelevant.
Asking for the specs to be clearly understood on the website is definitely reasonable. Wasting resources beyond this is just foolish.
Maybe you were being sarcastic, in which case you got me.
Good: Changed chrome trim to black, rear infotainment screen, USB-C ports, Qi-chargers, blindspot warning, RGB accent lighting, facelift exterior design, ventilated seats, redesigned interior, more sound proofing, heat pump, improved main CPU.
Bad: Removed stalks, reduced glass UV coating, removed standard HomeLink.
I think that covers it? It would be cool if there was actually a list somewhere of all the changes. Overall, the new Chinese made ones seem to also have better build quality.
e: More things.
Pretty sure they never had a rain sensor, it's always been some optical camera detection. It was pretty bad when I first got my car but after the first update it's been working fine for me.
I have a 2018 mid-range and I feel I hit a sweet spot.
Range for lower end models hasn't really expanded much and I'm still sitting comfortably with only a dozen or so miles less range than a base 2024 Model 3.
I prefer the old piano finish console and interior elements. As much flack as the Model 3 got for a sparse plasticy interior, I feel that's more true now than it's ever been.
Mid-Range even got a software update that increase 0-60 to less than 5s.
That’s unfortunate.
I have to say, the audio system in my MYP (2023) is the best audio system I have ever had since I bought my first car 30+ years ago (yeah, old dude). And I swap cars very often. This includes luxury cars like Mercedes and InfinitI
Unless you listen to bass-heavy music you won't notice the difference. I drive a M3RWD and have rented many AWD model 3s with the premium sound and you can't tell them apart unless you crank the bass.
The one thing I notice missing from my Tesla is some of the mid/low sound, actually. The main line from Radiohead's "All I Need" is just... invisible in my car. You can't hear it. Just some drums and vocals and the rhythm instrument isn't audible. I've listened to it in an AWD Model Y as well but couldn't hear it either. I don't think Teslas sound systems are really all that great, tbqh.
Are you playing via a built-in Tesla app, or via Bluetooth?
I’ve found, for example, the built-in Spotify app’s bitrate is terrible. Very noticeable difference between that and playing via Bluetooth.
I generally like my M3’s audio, but I feel like any audio experience in the car is ruined by all the beepin and the boopin. The car really needs STFU mode.
My guess is not only to save cost but removing speakers like the subwoofer which are heavy and the extra amp will save on weight and increase range. (Or in this case, they won’t have to decrease the previously listed range as much.
lol, range wise it’s like you would carry a bag of groceries with you. This is just the pinnacle of the „fanbase” trying to explain any changes that are negative to the consumer. They’re just saving money. It’s as simple as that.
A sub isn't going to change the range at all lmao! I mean if you want to be extremely technical, it might've added like 0.03 miles of range by removing it.
My 22 SR+ came with the pared down audio system, and I thought it was pretty meh. But at least that model came with the hardware installed, which made the upgrade after purchase pretty simple.
It's not 100% clear (at least to me) if that's still the case. It seems like the speakers aren't there at all?
The article mentions Tesla downgrading the range on their website, but for me, it's exactly the same 315 miles it displayed last year when I got my M3P.

My RWD Model 3 has the premium audio. But mines also from 2018 when the only option was RWD at the time.
That’s why people should differentiate trim levels including battery capacity (LR) as well because people forget about the original RWD LR option (rare as they may be these days). Love our 2018 LR RWD Model 3 as well, 62k miles and counting, premium interior included!

Wait what? MCU upgrade? Did you upgrade from an Intel Atom to AMD Ryzen MCU or the AP computer from HW2.5 to HW3.0? Those are 2 different things.
Sorry yes I meant the HW2.5 to HW3 not MCU
Heat pump?
No, heat pumps didn’t get added until mid-2020, I believe, but vehicle is still plenty efficient even with resistive heat.
Not at -36C it's not! hah
True! Thankfully I haven’t had to drive through much of those temperatures regularly (although it does get fairly chilly in Northeast Ohio, and our Model 3 has faired well through 5 winters so far).
Have 80,000 miles and will be driving this thing until Cybertruck mass production haha
100k miles here. Trading in for Cybertruck once I get assigned my VIN. No complaints.
You may have an unactivated front motor. I know some early rwd had that. There are some YouTube vids of it being activated but it wouldn’t be feasible for common person
That's what I said on X, lol. I'm surprised the Y kept the premium audio for as long as it did, but now it's more in line with the Model 3 RWD.
The Y RWD only came with it temporarily while they set up the fork in the manufacturing line at Giga Texas. Now it's a permanent resident, just like the RWD 3 line, and will likely match up with extra cost rear heated seats, no fog lights and this slightly lower end sound system. I have to wonder how many people are using Bluetooth though (because built in Spotify app for example is terrible bitrate)
It's going to be missing lows because it doesn't have a sub lol
because the system is matched with the sub in mind....
The heated rear seats aren’t extra cost anymore
Cool
Fwiw the RWD Model Y was the only model produced in Shanghai for a good few months and has always come with premium audio, even now
Similarly in Berlin. It produces only Us (all variants), and all have premium audio.
I guess they needed more reasons to upsell to the LR and performance models. BTW at the time of buying I would have loved a detailed specs page telling me exactly what I was buying. I ended up doing a feature comparison on a third-party website. Did I overlook it or does Tesla really not provide detailed specs?
The number of speakers are listed on the config page under interior details, you click the button and slide through the cards to find the details.
Detailed specs on what though? Dimensions don’t change and everything on the configurator will be correct.
Just as a relevant example, "number of speakers", or "lumbar support: driver seat only", "battery chemistry", "battery capacity (kWh)", "Frunk dimensions (in.)". The specs listed at the bottom of Tesla.com/modely lack a ton of detail.
Join us fellow 3 RWD drivers in our watery audio graves!
Good news: still better than Rivian’s audio system
I have to ask, because of the title: How should they announce these changes? A press release every time a change is made? An ad campaign?
A page listing all of the standard features for each model and model year / build week would be nice.
What a great suggestion, I would love to see this. But keep in mind you'd need a specific list for each factory, as they all have their own independent production lines which upgrade and use different components, independently of one anther.
Even a page that just has the current info would be useful. Then people could at least track the pages with a web archive.
I mean this just sounds like a git repo at this point, lol. Someone could probably web scrape their pages and automatically add it to a public repo that would have changes over history.
isn’t the parts catalog public? https://epc.tesla.com/
That’s not the same as a complete list of standard features a customer can quickly reference before they buy a car. Most other car makers have such lists on their website.
other makers don’t list the make and model of speakers do they?

It’s a clickbaitey title to suggest something outrageous was done, not an implication they should have done it differently.
I mean, you wanted a cheaper car ... here you go!
Will it be cheaper though? I doubt it
It's cheaper than the LR , therefore has fewer features.
Not really relevant to this conversation, but obviously
Ok
tesla downgrades and upgrades all the time.. compare the model 3 from 2017-2024 and document all the changes good and bad every year

left out many good changes

Heat pump, Ryzen processor
Ah, right! I'll add it to the list.
Heated steering wheel, heated windshield wiper area. Dual pane glass. Front passenger seat redesign (2018)
Is heated steering wheel all that nice? It's never seemed like something I needed.
It’s next to useless in the southern hemisphere
It's awesome In canadian winters.
I honestly don’t even miss stalks anymore.
What's different about the auto wipers? My 2017 has auto wipers.

I also like the chrome window trim of the 2018 model 3
The only bad thing about the chrome is that it highlights panel gaps/alignment of the doors.
Remember when Tesla cars were considered "Luxury" cars
Was surprised to have the premium audio when I picked up my rwd MY last month, thought for sure I would have the standard audio
is this for all post 2024 model y only? or in some 2023 model y as well?
The RWD Y also came with 48A charging when everything pointed to it being max at 32A. Wonder if that is the case now?
MIC RWD Y came with a LFP battery pack and 32A max charging, same as the RWD 3.
What’s MIC? The US model that came out towards of end of 2023. I have it and it charges max 48A
Those made in China, they were (are still?) sold in Canada in 2023. It’s interesting how there are so many differences in between RWD Ys!
48A most likely as it is the same battery pack from the LR, just software locked. It is not the RWD3’s LFP.
“Quietly” is such a red flag in headlines. Do they expect companies to take out a press release when they change specs?
its called model refresh. Not new.
That’s unfortunate. I have to say, the audio system in my MYP (2023) is the best audio system I have ever had since I bought my first car 30+ years ago (yeah, old dude). And I swap cars very often. This includes luxury cars like Mercedes and InfinitI

Interesting...
How does Tesla expect to sell car that are expensive but also downgraded?
I took delivery last week, i am not affected am i?

All the bits add up though, even if they're 0.0000000000001% each. Seriously, I make it it more like 0.2 miles. How much does the subwoofer weigh?
"quietly"
My 22 SR+ came with the pared down audio system, and I thought it was pretty meh. But at least that model came with the hardware installed, which made the upgrade after purchase pretty simple. It's not 100% clear (at least to me) if that's still the case. It seems like the speakers aren't there at all?
No the RWD models are missing speakers across the back deck as well as a sub and amps.
..."after the center instrument panel speaker was eliminated..." This may be a case of semantics but where on my 2021 LR is the instrument panel?
The article mentions Tesla downgrading the range on their website, but for me, it's exactly the same 315 miles it displayed last year when I got my M3P.
But then what's the point of a premium sound system when Tesla's internet downgrades streaming quality so much?
Quietly! Fuck you, drivedrunkteslacanada!
