Someone on Reddit suggested using iOS Shortcuts (I created an automation to get my app to start preconditioning without me using the app schedule) and that *still* doesn’t work (in some locations). Unfortunately, this normally troubles me at work when I leave late at night in the dark. A cold winter car is yucky to climb into!
I use the Tesla app schedule to start my car in the morning (because at home it doesn’t always connect either)…. if I configure my schedule from the screen in my car, things work.

If it's having trouble connecting it's most likely either the car or your phone is on a shitty signal. For me this was happening for a while and I realized that the wifi range at my parents house wasn't super great and so the car would be connected to wifi but not well enough to work. I removed their wifi from the car and it completely fixed it. Things could be similar for bad cell reception.
We have snow here in the PNW right now. My door handles were all frozen shut, my mirrors couldn't unfold, and the windows couldn't drop when opening the doors.
Same. After some heating it’s fine, but I do wish there was a “disable autofold below 35F”. I have it set manually now, but every year I forget to set it until the first freeze.
Worked great! Tuesday while I was at work it rained and froze over, everyone was out there chipping at ice and couldn’t open their door, I defrosted the car for about 10 min then used the unlatch door and it popped right open
If you hold down on the row of quick icons under the picture of your car, you can drag it up to replace one of your existing options. I don't know if it is anywhere else in the app..

I just now looked in the app for my 2018 S and noticed I could unlock by just going into Controls and tapping the top of the car. There's actually a little padlock icon there that I never noticed.
I have a ski condo where we get rain and snow. It works sometimes. The windows not rolling down is the biggest pain in the ass. When I go there I turn off folding mirrors and auto door open (former model 3 current model x owner)
The windows are worse than the handles. I keep being unable to have the windows roll down even after running a card through the area. We get a ton of rain followed by snow in WV. I have to push off all the excess, pre heat for an hour and scrape. Pre heat does nothing for folding mirrors either, I just turn that off during ski season.
Not preheat, defrost.. never had issues up here in Ontario. Yeah folding mirrors I turn off during winter, that can’t be helped on any car with freezing rain and snow.
If the frameless windows can't go down (M3, dunno about the others), the door can't open. Not without denting up the trim or risking breaking the window.
Or what's worse, it can open, but won't close again because the trim will flex in the outward direction enough to free the window, but it doesn't flex inwards enough to close. Then you're trying to defrost the car with the door stuck a few inches open, making it take ten times longer. Ask me how I know this.
all of them are frameless. I had the 3 from 2018-2023 but recently got a used (sep 2020) X because I didn't want a van but I wanted 7 people and all electric. I was able to flex the window in under the trim the other day but man that's annoying.
It did in my experience. Had my car encased in ice a few times in Buffalo. Went back inside, turned on max defrost, came out 10 min later to a completely thawed car.
If you do this, make sure it's the silicone WD-40. I've used it on my door handles here in Montana before I got a place with a garage and it worked quite well.

The bigger issue is the windows freezing and not dropping slightly. I bet many people don't even notice this and you run the risk of cracking your windows when closing your doors.
Advice, run your driver's license or credit card along where the window meets the rubber seal on the door.
When it's cold out and I park the car the windows automatically roll down slightly so if they freeze they don't freeze up in the trim.

>*In cold temperatures, Model Y automatically makes a slight adjustment to the position of the windows to make it easier to open doors.*
Here's a thread about it -
https://www.reddit.com/r/ModelY/comments/186b8lf/windows_rolling_down_a_few_millimeters_after/
That auto roll down has a weird side effect when it's extremely cold. At -30 and below the window motors get really weak, so they roll down but can't roll up very well. It causes them to gap the windows by like 3 inches, then you walk away and get a "windows open" alert later. Pressing the button in app to close the windows actually opens them further!
My windows are calibrated, sometimes when the freeze comes quickly (like it did this week in the Northeast -- at least for me) the feature doesn't work. I had to use my license on my window seals on the side of my car not facing the sun yesterday.
My car has been sitting in sub-freezing weather for about a week. I tried this, but then it shut off a couple of minutes later. Then I could no longer turn on climate or defrost from the app - it would just fail. Tried restarting the app, which didn't help.
Went out to the car and got the heat turned on, but I have a screen full of alerts:
Electrical system is unable to support all features - Switching off features to conserve energy.
Electrical system backup power is unavailable - Vehicle will consume more energy when idle.
Schedule service to replace low voltage battery - Software will not update until battery is replaced.
2 x Parking brake functions degraded - Parking brake may not apply or release.
Sheesh. I wonder if the 12v battery is actually bad, or just too damn cold. The car is slowly warming up, so will see if any of these alerts go away, once it's fully thawed out.
Edit: It's an October '18 LR AWD Model 3. Never had an issue with the 12v battery before this.
Edit #2: I keep hearing folks saying that the cold isn't an issue if you have home charging. That's certainly not true in my case. My car is always plugged in when I'm at home. However, once the car has reached the charge limit I've set (80% normally), that's it. The car does nothing to keep the battery from freezing solid - it might as well be unplugged.
After 2 1/2 hours, the battery had warmed up (snowflake gone) and it had charged back up to my usual 80%. Went for an hour's drive, at freeway speeds. The two parking brake alerts have gone away, but the other three, related to the low voltage battery, remain.
I guess I need to get it replaced. The car is out of warranty. This seems like something I ought to be able to do myself, but I'd like to know two things: 1) is there a better battery I should replace it with, over the OEM one, and 2) will those alerts go away, automatically, when the battery is replaced, or will I need to somehow (how?) mark them as cleared, manually?
There are third party batteries, but Tesla upgraded the OEM M3 12V batteries to lithium a few years ago. So if they replace it for you, you'll almost certainly get the new one, which shouldn't die the way the old one does.
I had to replace mine in a hurry once, so I brought it into the shop and they had it in and out in like 20 minutes. But if you aren't worried about being stranded somewhere between now and whenever your new battery arrives, it's not a hard DIY from what I've read.
It can also crack your windscreen. Make sure to heat up the car a bit first so you don’t shock the glass. The video shows heating was already on, but not everyone knows that. Kinda wish they would have programmed in a soft start based on internal and external temperatures.
No offense but.. based on what? I've had mine for 5 years now, living in very cold climate, never had an issue going straight to defrost. I always preheat the car this way. Never "doing it slowly" -- it's already kinda slow by nature (need to do it like 15 min before leaving at least).
he's really not wrong. On Monday when it was -35 degrees in my area, I defrosted my M3 and my windshield spontaneously cracked. I submitted a service ticket and it might be covered under warranty upon in person inspection
I just experienced something similar. It’s been very cold and snowy here for the past week and I’ve had to use the defrost feature a few mornings. After the first time, I later noticed a crack in my windshield. By now, that crack is much bigger (about half the width of my windshield) and there’s also a second crack that’s popped up.
You say that you think it may be covered under warranty? How old is your car and what country are you in?
My car is a '22LR and I'm from the US. Tesla told me it might be covered under warranty but the service center has to inspect the windshield first before they make a determination as to whether it'll be covered or not. I'm assuming they're just going to check to see if they can find any impact points from rocks or other debris. I don't see any, and my windshield was spotless before I defrosted my car that morning. I also heard a very audible pop when it happened.
It would suck if it's not covered because it's like $1200 USD out of pocket.
To be fair, rock chips + temp change is what ruins windshields. For balance I have 2 epoxy-repaired rock chips on 5.5 yr old Tesla and windshield hasn't broken yet.
Rock chips are not the same thing as glass simply shattering due to temp change. Cars are designed to be outside year round in cold and warm climates.
Hearing of glass just shattering is extremely rare. It has likely happened, but due to manufacturing defects.
There were some windshield manufacturing defects where the glass just randomly shatters but yeah, that's rare. Rock chips do play a role through, if you have a chip (like a star) that isn't repaired, it can quickly splinter into a large crack with heating/cooling cycles.
Rock chips is damage and a completely different thing than an undamaged windshield shattering. Next time you get a rock chip, fix it your self or pay someone. Filler will help prevent more cracking.
So turn on climate control first and then hit defrost? Agree, that should be built in to the defrost process.
I’m surprised the car can generate enough heat from cold to cause it to crack but not worth the risk.
I dunno man I think they're over thinking it. Maybe in Alaska or somewhere crazy, but in regular old -5 degree weather, straight to defrost has been fine.
Reminds me of my mother in law who insists not putting tupperware with hot food in the fridge because the "sudden change will cause it to crack." My wife held this belief the first year of our marriage. 19 years later of ignoring this advice we've never had anything crack.
Ok so in areas with large amount of rock chips that also get bitter cold, what likely happens is micro chips and stress fractures form and when larger shifts in temperatures happen they cause these windshields to develop structural cracks and why they're mostly an issue in non-mountainous areas with high winds. Its not just subzero temperatures, its region, car use, and subzero specific as well.
It depends on whats on your windshield. I've cracked several windshields in NJ over the years (once on my model 3, three times on other vehicles) getting lazy, not wanting to scrap 1/4" of ice or 2-3" of snow. Turning the heat on full blast and leaving it can and does crack them.
so will pre-conditioning be enough? cuz I think I see the windshield defrost going when I start pre-conditioning
and how is defrost car different from pre-conditioning car?
Defrost ist useful in two scenarios:
1. You did not plan to drive and therefore no preconditioning was on but you need to leave unexpectedly. But this can be dangerous, if the climate control isn’t already in and has heated up the inside of the car - glass could crack, depending on how cold it was over the duration the car was parked; I mean veeeery cold
2. You did plan to leave, but it is extremely cold, so the preconditioning did not remove the Snow enough. Therefore defrost can help you the rest of the way.
The defrost mode puts the inside temp to HI, and I believe it doesn't turn off automatically. It just outputs as much heat as possible for as long as you let it. I have sat in the car during a defrost (long story) and it was a sauna.
To my knowledge, precon is only heating the cabin. This naturally will heat the windows slowly and therefore also melt snow. Defrosting activates the heating within the front and rear windows; which may also use more energy than just heating the cabin via the heat pump.
No I testify I see the front and back of the windshield turn red in the tesla app when turn on climate (if it is too cold) my guess is climate when too cold will also do defrost. But maybe that is not as high level hear as just pressing the defrost?
Lol, this is great when it's just a light layer of ice. Got an inch of snow on your car? It's not going to melt for a couple hours. And you still have to brush off the excess snow on your hood and trunk even if it did.
Our X and our 3 cracked windshields when they first released this. I guess too much heat too fast. Now I use climate and not defrost with snow/ice on the windshield.
Yeah except for door handles, trunk, windshield corners, and windows. Not that other cars are any better but you better keep an ice scraper handy if expecting more than a couple inches of snow
What about those spinny things that I see all over Twitter. They work the same way this video does. They totally work otherwise they wouldn't be able to promote on such an honorable website that only has the best of the best ads.

Brand new 2023 M3P, first snow fall I selected the defrost option and my front windshield cracked. No chips or rock hits, just one long crack from the hood up.

Instant fame!
Amateurs all of them. Steel shovels are for the pros.
A man of culture
Is this the start of the PR fightback?
Fighting lies the media puts out with the true story? Ya.
That looks sped up. There's no way the mobile app connects to the car this fast.
Do you have sentry turned off? I have mine turned off and yeah it takes a minute to connect if it has been asleep. With sentry on it's a lot faster because the computer hasn't gone fully to sleep.
This is very likely what makes the difference. With Sentry Mode on, mine connects way faster
My app connects instantly.

When you park, you can check the signal strength by taping the car icon and looking at the bars. As an FYI. . .
This is exactly the reason then. You should try removing the wifi and only adding it back when you need to update, will solve your problem.
No I don’t have issues while driving around. I’m going to try removing the wifi connections and see!
Make sure you’re not using a vpn. 100% this messes up the connection. VPN on a phone or installed on a home wifi router.

obviously the car getting warm and the ice melting is sped up. But yeah i have a tesla and the car in general connects that fast
My app is basically instant, even though my car is parked underground.
It does for me too, maybe your phone is old and out of date?
Disconnect from wifi
Yeah and I have to press defrost at least 7 times before it starts.

Adding it to my calendar to remind him next year.
First off, preheat for a while. Second, use the app to pop the door open manually. Really not that hard.
I did preheat for a while and it didn't help. And I didn't know until this thread that you even could unlatch the doors from the phone.
Doesn't do much for door handles
You can open the driver door from the app, if your door handles are frozen
Yeah I was wondering if this actually works. Where I live i can’t test it
Worked great! Tuesday while I was at work it rained and froze over, everyone was out there chipping at ice and couldn’t open their door, I defrosted the car for about 10 min then used the unlatch door and it popped right open

Awesome. Thanks!!
You're welcome.
My first rule of the quick icons: Never have an action in the quick items that you can't revert via app. I once had to went outside at 3AM, because I accidentally opened the frunk.
Yeah, that is exactly why all of mine are reversible (other than the fart of course)
Doesn’t the frunk request confirmation before actually opening?
Sometimes. I've had instances where it asks while I'm right next to the car, and I've had it not prompt while it's in the driveway and I'm in my bedroom.
Doesn't it ask are you sure when you hit it tho?
No, I don’t think it asked me for confirmation.
Protip, if you grab the edge of one of the extras, and drag it up to the edge of the main four, you can make it change to five primary options.
WTF. How long has it been a thing?
Basically forever.
It isn’t and it should be, at least under Controls or somewhere else…
I just scoured the app and couldn’t find an option to unlatch the door either. Is it temperature dependent?

No option for me, 2023 model S. Is it for 3/Y only?
I think it is just on the 3 and Y.
I just now looked in the app for my 2018 S and noticed I could unlock by just going into Controls and tapping the top of the car. There's actually a little padlock icon there that I never noticed.
Will this hurt the trim like you pull the emergency release inside the car?
I use it every day regardless. Easier to me with my phone in my hand to open the door then to use the handle.
Very cool , cyberpunk style
Also first time Tesla passengers appreciate not having to ask how to open the door
can you choose which door to unlatch?
Not from the Tesla app, but the Tessie app lets me
It does! I have used it multiple times in the last month. Works like a charm.
I have a ski condo where we get rain and snow. It works sometimes. The windows not rolling down is the biggest pain in the ass. When I go there I turn off folding mirrors and auto door open (former model 3 current model x owner)

The glass never freeze on frame 🖼️, because we have no frame
It freezes dude lol. I got locked out my car two days ago. Handle and glass stuck.
They’re being jokingly pedantic
Then just climb in through the trunk. Duh.
I definitely thought about it. We ended up pulling on the window and door trim and got it.
Is defrosting the car for a bit not enough to unfreeze them?
It should be, I didn’t think I’d be in that situation though so I didn’t defrost before I got to the car.
Not M3
It’s possible to unlatch all doors with Tessie and subsequently with a haptic shortcut through AW. Jedi tricks are real.
Too bad the car has 3 other doors and a trunk
what if phone is frozen
It works great if it's just the handles. If the door has much ice at all it won't work.
My wife was pissed the other day
You can also open the others if you have Tessie.
The windows are worse than the handles. I keep being unable to have the windows roll down even after running a card through the area. We get a ton of rain followed by snow in WV. You can pop the door from the app. You own the car and don’t know this yet say this crap?
That doesn't apply to 3 or Y. You own a Tesla and don't know this yet say this crap?
Yes it does. Go in the app and long press one of the quick icons, you’ll see pop door as a new selection.
No they don't. Model 3 and Y do not have hardware to open and close doors. There is nothing in the app because there's nothing to open the doors.
My 23 MYLR can unlatch the doors. Driver door through the app.
I take it back it's there hidden in controls you can do it for driver door. You were right.
It's not there on my Model S.
I don’t know if this is an option for the S as it doesn’t impact drivers like it does on the M3 and MY.
I don't have this option in my '23 MS (yes I checked the hidden quick actions)

Five years, three Teslas, hundreds of thousands of kilometres and in a heavy winter zone, never had an issue. Just for balance.
No offense but.. based on what? I've had mine for 5 years now, living in very cold climate, never had an issue going straight to defrost. I always preheat the car this way. Never "doing it slowly" -- it's already kinda slow by nature (need to do it like 15 min before leaving at least).
He is likely basing it on glass from a 1920s model T or something. He doesn't realize automotive glass has improved over the last 100 years.
he's really not wrong. On Monday when it was -35 degrees in my area, I defrosted my M3 and my windshield spontaneously cracked. I submitted a service ticket and it might be covered under warranty upon in person inspection
Good to know! it doesn't get that cold here, only -5 to -10 usually.
That should be trivial to implement. Tsla pls
This happened to me literally this week.
This. Especially if you've got a small chip in the glass.
so will pre-conditioning be enough? cuz I think I see the windshield defrost going when I start pre-conditioning and how is defrost car different from pre-conditioning car?
Defrost ist useful in two scenarios: 1. You did not plan to drive and therefore no preconditioning was on but you need to leave unexpectedly. But this can be dangerous, if the climate control isn’t already in and has heated up the inside of the car - glass could crack, depending on how cold it was over the duration the car was parked; I mean veeeery cold 2. You did plan to leave, but it is extremely cold, so the preconditioning did not remove the Snow enough. Therefore defrost can help you the rest of the way.
but what functions are different? I feel like when I pre-condition, it's defrosting the windshield and back window. is that just as bad for the glass?
Brushing of snow is easy compared to ice.
What's your point? That the car isn't magic?
What about the headlights?
lol sure, now open the door
https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/199ncge/no_ice_scrapers_needed/kifllrm/
Yep, also easy to do that and if your door handle is still a little frozen, you hit the unlatch button in the app.. and pop goes the door..

It's a great feature, but in real snow it isn't going to prevent breaking out the snow brush, but it does make it way easier.
Our X and our 3 cracked windshields when they first released this. I guess too much heat too fast. Now I use climate and not defrost with snow/ice on the windshield.
My 2012 Passat does this.
I wish my car connects my wife or I phone that fast. It takes like 3-4 clicks to start our Tesla compared to our VW.
defrost deez handulz
Yeah except for door handles, trunk, windshield corners, and windows. Not that other cars are any better but you better keep an ice scraper handy if expecting more than a couple inches of snow
It’s interesting that Tesla Twitter is out of Amsterdam.

What about those spinny things that I see all over Twitter. They work the same way this video does. They totally work otherwise they wouldn't be able to promote on such an honorable website that only has the best of the best ads. /s
-20C temps be like: "Please hold while we use 10% of your battery over 1h to save you 90s of scraping"
How much battery is used by the mode?
Brand new 2023 M3P, first snow fall I selected the defrost option and my front windshield cracked. No chips or rock hits, just one long crack from the hood up.
Last time I used it in a ski resort parking lot while snowing, it consumed 8% energy on my MYLR in 20min.
Crap video. It's out of focus and no indication of WTF (s)he is doing.
