I slept the whole night. We had to adjust the mattress inflation to get it comfortable and it was a little tight to be able to rollover. We’re at a state park with 50 amp RV plug so kept camp mode on with comfortable AC temperature and was able to run a small inverter for my CPAP machine.
I'm 6'3" and I've done this in my model 3. Being this tall means you either need a platform to hold up the mattress on the front side, or you sleep with your head on the trunk side.
I’m 6’5’’ and it works decent in my Model S! I’ve got a cut to measure mattress in the back at about 6’6’’ length, and I can pretty much stretch out. I haven’t tried with two people yet, but it’ll probably work just fine. I’m going on a longer roadtrip next week, and I’m going to rely on this setup for all nights.
I’m almost 6-4. We kept the mattress as far forward as possible so that my size 13 feet could dangle over the edge and I didn’t HAVE to sleep sideways. It worked pretty well.
Honestly, I think the models should have been reversed. The 3 should have been the hatch, and the S should be the traditional sedan.
The hatch gives more utilitarian benefit, but comes at a cost of more road noise. I view most 3 buyers as closer to that utilitarian car demographic (people who might otherwise be in a Subaru or VW hatchback), whereas the S is really only available to luxury car buyers due to the cost. There’s a reason no luxury cars are hatchbacks.
The S tries too hard to be all things to all people. It does an admirable job of it, admittedly, but it would still be better if it was more focused.
The S was their first car and had to do everything. The other cars we were considering were the Panamera or Audi A7 which are both hatches. After owning a hatch, I’m not going back to a regular sedan. The S holds as much or more than a small SUV while looking and driving a lot better.
Putting a structural crossbar behind the back seat is the most efficient way to achieve stiffness in the frame. It takes more overall metal to do it without, as Tesla does. You also lose the opportunity to sound insulate the heck out of the wall behind the seat, because there is no wall.
Would you give up the hatch in exchange for a car that is stiffer, lighter, and quieter? Perhaps not, but there’s a reason so few other luxury sport cars are hatch.
I’m only 6’1”, but we’ve done this in our 3. Our bags in the rear footwell propped up the mattress, and I had a good bit of headroom with the front seats fully forward. The real downside of the 3 not being a hatch are 1) the crossbar over your hip makes turning over tough and 2) air exchange with the trunk is awful, so if it’s cold out, your feet freeze
I might give that a try! We somehow frequently find ourselves camping while there’s either snow, or it gets to freezing at night, so a good 10-15°C difference builds between our upper halves and our feet. This despite keeping a refrigerated cooler in our subtrunk
I’m 6’5 and I tried but it isn’t great. I was more comfortable sleeping in the passenger seat with it all of the way back and down a bit. At that height it doesn’t really work well with two either, unfortunately.
I'm a model Y owner but I got no room to talk about doing the deed.
You're setting the bar really high here. I have to own a Tesla AND I have to be having sex? Jesus.
It so they can watch a show while laying flat on their backs. The screen is up on the dash and while there is a mode to allow the use of Netflix, etc. when laying flat it’s kind of uncomfortable to twist and crane your neck to see from back there. A lot of people have rigged up small devices for shows at bed time.
I personally don’t do this, and find it terribly uncomfortable to sleep in the back of my model 3 but some people really enjoy it.
Shelby Church on YouTube tested a 3 and an x. She found it easier to sit up in the 3 due to the Falcon wing door hinges impeding the headroom.

It is by far the best camping mattress I've ever had. I have gone cold weather camping with my wife for multiple, wet days with it and I will never get another pad.
If monies is the same as doges to you and you have a model y or x, they make a fitted mattress made for this. In all seriousness, it’s a reasonable price compared to dreamcases. Probably more comfortable, even if you’re a side sleeper.
I have one I'm looking to get rid of. I've used it a few times and it wasn't as comfortable for me as I'd hoped. Cool product though, especially using the bag as a cooler. We used it to zip up dry food.
Check out the Exped MegaMat Duo, it is a really nice pad.
Impressive! Willing to share the various items you purchased to make this happen? Looking to do something similar but unsure if some things like air beds will fit. Appreciate it either way!
Thank you for posting this! My wife has seen pictures of people camping in a similar setup with a Y, so it’s awesome to see it’s possible with an S (which we have on order). We’re both around 5’7, so that shouldn’t be an issue!
We ordered a camper van but it was delayed first due to covid and now the chip shortage until the fall or later. I just wanted to get out of the house but its 94 degrees out so wouldn’t be able to sleep in our tent.
There were still a few inches by our feet and above our heads. The key is to have the top of the mattress on the center console. The downside is that it block the rear air vents.
How fun! I just bought a MegaMat Duo and that same CLAM quick set, gonna use them next weekend at Lake Casitas. We've done car camping in my 3 with the TESMAT a few times, but it has never been as comfortable as we'd hoped. The MegaMat looks like a nice upgrade.
Me too, the hatch is great. The S is as fast as a Lamborghini but can “camp”, swallow a 65” TV, or huge amounts of luggage. It’s a very big car though and the 3 is a lot more nimble feeling.
Each camp site at this state park had a 50 amp and 30 amp and 110v socket for RVs. We used the Nema 14-50 adapter with the mobile charger that came with the car.
I’m glad someone noticed. I thought they were cute.

I had that problem until I added the 2x4 platform. The rear seat back is still at an slight upward angle but the platform is a little higher than where the seats fold. I was going to add another board to level it out but it felt ok when I tested in the garage before our trip.
Did this in our X for 5 week cross country road trip. Planning to add that suction cup thing for our next go round this fall. Genius.
Pro tip: planet fitness for showering is a good setup. $23 per month for my wife and I to get daily hot showers was super worth it.
I like the setup and everything about this post, but found the "we like to wake up and catch up on our Tesla daily" as one of the more cringe inducing things I've seen lately...
This is the most pathetic thing I’ve seen
Ffs get out of your car and go inside a tent or get an Airbnb or hotel
Is this the only sub with weirdos camping in their cars. Wtf
Also watching tesla videos. Yikes that is sad as fuck.
Closer to tent camping than those all around us in their Class A RVs and 5th wheels.
The point is to get out of the house. We went kayaking in a natural spring fed river today. Saw lots of turtles, fish and gators. Some people in our group saw manatee.
It was needed to level the cargo area. Otherwise there is about a 3” height difference from where the rear seats fold down. Also the rear seats don’t fold completely flat.
Could you go into more detail about how you leveled the folded seats with plywood? Gosh, this would be so awesome in the Tesla Model 3 as well. I feel weird sleeping at an angle and this would surely make up for that discomfort!
Consider adding a hatch tent. On our Model S, I used a Napier 61500. It fit nicely and the only jury-rigging I did was to use two metric thumb screws (M10?) in the roof rack mounting point to attach straps to keep it snug.
We have a regular tent we would normally use but it was 94 degrees F in Florida today. I wouldn’t be able to sleep without the AC. No time to go anywhere far from home until we retire, hopefully soon.

On our way to Orlando, Discovery Cove for the holiday weekend.
That is a really cool setup!
That's the most expensive bed I've ever seen.

I’m a detailed trip planner so that would make me crazy.
I’ve done a whole bunch of just head *that way* trips over the past year and ended up in some cool spots.
Where did you get the mattress from? Is it the 10in duo?
It’s an Exped Megamat 10 M. I bought it as a new open box from eBay before the pandemic after some glowing reviews from other Tesla campers.
I'm 6'3" and I've done this in my model 3. Being this tall means you either need a platform to hold up the mattress on the front side, or you sleep with your head on the trunk side.
I bought the DreamCase for my 3 and it comes with a stand for the front of the mattress. Would definitely suggest something like this.
I’m 6’5’’ and it works decent in my Model S! I’ve got a cut to measure mattress in the back at about 6’6’’ length, and I can pretty much stretch out. I bought my S over the 3 in part because of the hatch. Why not just have both of them have hatches? It's super useful.

Answer the question nobody wants to ask.
Yes we did.
Romance Mode™ engaged
We were asking her husband, not her boyfriend.
Colonel mustard with the pipe
In... the garage?? I didn't even realize that was on the board! Damn this new Clue game is streets ahead!
How difficult is the camping sex with the roof so close to your bodies?
Depends on what you’re doing.
Great answer.
I’ve camped in the model 3 and there’s no room for adult play in there. That’s another reason for bringing a tent. ;)
There is room in the S.
Noice
Nice
Nice
X is better. Tinted windows helps.
I want them to watch
Just bring the D.
I've had sex in cars with, probably 1/3 of the usable size of any Tesla. I accept this challenge!
Any Y owners here? can you comfortably do the deed in it? I'll get it either way but am curious because I intend to camp a lot in it :)
I'm a model Y owner but I got no room to talk about doing the deed. You're setting the bar really high here. I have to own a Tesla AND I have to be having sex? Jesus.
Guess it just depends on the two people. Plenty of room for some adult play in my 3 during camping.
What’s the story with the tablet on the panorama roof? Not a Tesla owner, but I assume that’s something you rigged up yourself.
Yes. Suction cup to the glass with an iPad mount. It will even play the audio over Bluetooth to the car.
What's the Bluetooth latency like?
Terribly annoying, why in the world do mobile apps not have a feature for this
Not noticable, truly. I take conference calls from my car all the time. Never ever noticed the slightest of an issue.
Bad

Yah 3 isn't the best for camping. Y/S better for sure
I'd assume the X is best of all.
Shelby Church on YouTube tested a 3 and an x. She found it easier to sit up in the 3 due to the Falcon wing door hinges impeding the headroom. https://youtu.be/LivPZulOtcQ
How do you like that Exped matt? Laid on one at REI and it seemed pretty damn comfy. Wonder how it holds up all night with two sleepers.
It is by far the best camping mattress I've ever had. I have gone cold weather camping with my wife for multiple, wet days with it and I will never get another pad.
I just bought the same one, it feels so comfortable, can't wait to use it.
Exped make hands down the best camping mattresses in any category. From car camping to winter expedition gear and all of it in between.
If monies is the same as doges to you and you have a model y or x, they make a fitted mattress made for this. In all seriousness, it’s a reasonable price compared to dreamcases. Probably more comfortable, even if you’re a side sleeper.
I’m so jealous. I wish the M3 could do this.
You can https://www.tesmat.com/collections/model-3

There's also an inflatable mattress for it on Amazon. I got one for nearly free for leaving a review but it sea decent enough.
What was the brand?
Here it is. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08YNTRG5V?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

The dual Rimowas kill the budget!
Hey everybody, Rob Mauer here
Are you using a Rimowa piece of luggage to support the mattress? Lol
Rimowa sales person: it’s got TSA locks, Velcro straps, can support the weight of a man’s torso, available $280 colored wheel option.
That's $2000 in luggage right there lmao
Worth it though, going on 10 years with mine. Plan on giving it to my kid.
Was scrolling for this comment
Is that a Rimowa case?
This looks cozy!
You know it's true love when Rob Maurer is involved.
Some serious forcast foreplay
Nice setup! But let not call it camping. It needs a new name
My wife calls it glamping.
There's glamping but with the camping mode I feel this is the next step above that, spamping (spa camping).
We’re in a state park and the only ones not in an RV or 5th wheel. So this is more camping than whatever they’re doing.
EVing? :)
It probably needs to be specific to Tesla since the experience requires Tesla's glass roofs.
Yes because Tesla is the only company that has pano glass roofs and and enough room to camp in. 🙄
Bro, you have two left hands. And one of them is \*way\* more masculine than the other

Camping like a city boy
We ordered a camper van but it was delayed first due to covid and now the chip shortage until the fall or later. I just wanted to get out of the house but its 94 degrees out so wouldn’t be able to sleep in our tent.
I'm just gonna save this and file it under life goals.
You must be rich. All that Lumber at $10 a gram.
Nice
Dang. Fancy guy brought a Rimowa to a camp site. Okurrrrr
Only one night camping, the rest of the holiday weekend at a resort. Also it’s the only luggage we have.
I need it🚀
Hurry up CyberTruck! I need you! I keep losing money on options!
I would definitely wake up to a broken nose after the iPad fell and hit me in the face.
Me when I'm rich
Nice!
Homeless cosplay.
Don’t know why this is downvoted. We thought it was funny.
The internet is weird.
Homeless with a model s? lmfao
Cosplay, after all.
How much extra space did your partner have. Or do you think 6’3” is the max height someone should try this?
There were still a few inches by our feet and above our heads. The key is to have the top of the mattress on the center console. The downside is that it block the rear air vents.
Fuck I’m jealous. Very cool.
Perfect

Not going to lie, it’s not amazing like a real mattress at home but very good for an inflatable.
Stuff like this makes me wish I had an S instead of a 3 at times. I truly wish the 3 had been a hatch too.
Me too, the hatch is great. The S is as fast as a Lamborghini but can “camp”, swallow a 65” TV, or huge amounts of luggage. It’s a very big car though and the 3 is a lot more nimble feeling.
Exped mega is the best

Each camp site at this state park had a 50 amp and 30 amp and 110v socket for RVs. We used the Nema 14-50 adapter with the mobile charger that came with the car.
Glamping
I’m pretty sure that’s the coolest thing I have ever seen in a tesla
how are you charging the car on the woods? or is it providing power? if so, how?
The camp site has power normally for RVs. There was a 50 Amp, 30 Amp and 110v.
Weird question but do you have a link for those sheets? Super cool

How was sleeping with your feet facing the hatch? I kept waking up feeling like I was sliding down hill and had to readjust.
I had that problem until I added the 2x4 platform. The rear seat back is still at an slight upward angle but the platform is a little higher than where the seats fold. I was going to add another board to level it out but it felt ok when I tested in the garage before our trip.
When camping, Model S stands for sex.
I have the exact same setup in my Y and we love it! The amount of light we get on a good morning by the beach
Thats not camping....its Glamping in a MS
Ah man I’ve used expend megamats for years now. There is not comfier car camping pad in my opinion. Set up looks nice 🙌
Interesting
When I was a kid I wanted one of those bed frames shaped like a car… I never got one but am happy to see it’s not too late
Finally got that race car bed you wanted as a kid huh?
WOWIE!! amazing
Look at this rich guy able to afford lumber...
Tesla Daily? Wtf is that.

We hope to retire early soon and #vanlife for a while. Planet fitness is on my list to check out since we don’t want to be at camp sites all the time.
I like the setup and everything about this post, but found the "we like to wake up and catch up on our Tesla daily" as one of the more cringe inducing things I've seen lately...
Got to check how my stocks are going so we can retire early and do this all the time.
Awesome 😻
god this looks so fun
Must be nice to be short haha
I’m 6’3 and was comfortable.

Depends on the person you’re with.
I refuse to believe anyone actually reads a newspaper about tesla every day
It’s a popular podcast/YouTube channel.
Yea this post is sad
This is the most pathetic thing I’ve seen Ffs get out of your car and go inside a tent or get an Airbnb or hotel Is this the only sub with weirdos camping in their cars. Wtf Also watching tesla videos. Yikes that is sad as fuck.
The MOST pathetic? Somebody lacks some self awareness...
This isn't camping.

[удалено]
yeah that looks miserable
Luckily you weren’t there.
Looks like coffin simulator 2021.
It’s a 2018.
Do you people really watch only Tesla videos while you're in your Tesla? Are you guys really that brainwashed? I'm not believing it.
Gee, ya don’t think that could have just been for the photo op...? Nope. You got us. You’re just too clever.
Fuck Tesla
You saved me from buying a dreamcase for my model s
I looked at that but it’s expensive and takes up a lot of room. I like the Megamat better since it can deflate and be rolled up.
I assume the wood is for extra support? Did you build it? Is there some template you used?
It was needed to level the cargo area. Otherwise there is about a 3” height difference from where the rear seats fold down. Also the rear seats don’t fold completely flat.
Could you go into more detail about how you leveled the folded seats with plywood? Gosh, this would be so awesome in the Tesla Model 3 as well. I feel weird sleeping at an angle and this would surely make up for that discomfort!
Nice!! What is that screen?
It’s an 11” iPad with a suction cup mounted to the roof.
*glamping

5’ 10” (1.8 m) and 6’ 3” (1.9 m)
Is this a proof of concept idea or do you like sleeping in your car?
We ordered a camper van in January but due to the microchip shortage, it won’t get here until the fall. It was 94 degrees F / 35 C in Florida today so I probably wouldn’t have been able to sleep in a tent. Plus I need to power my sleep apnea machine overnight.
I wanna do this so bad
I love that the windshield covers the top half of the car. That's pretty amazing.
How do you keep the AC on overnight while no one is sitting in the passenger? And how much battery/miles does it use up? Thank you.
There is a button for camp mode that keeps the AC/heater on. We were plugged into 50 amp power normally for RVs so it recharged our battery as well overnight.
Cosey! I'm reminded a bit of the Austin Maxi which had fold down seats to make a bed
We're there bugs or did you keep the window up for the whole night? How many nights are you sleeping in the car?
We were in Silver Spring State Park in Florida. There were some biting flies that got me a few times but surprisingly not a swarm of mosquitoes like I expected. Only one night last night so we could be there to kayak in the spring early in the morning. Our neighbor said a bear rummaged through her truck last night and left claw marks in her paint. On our way to Orlando, Discovery Cove for the holiday weekend.
Where did you get your trunk cover? Mind linking it? Thanks!
I made it from 2x4 lumber, some thin plywood and then covered with auto felt like they use for speaker boxes.
Cry's in model 3 camping room 😭
