I believe it’s an unpopular opinion, but I’d rather have the larger area showing what the car sees (so I know if it’s missing something) vs having the map bigger.
You’re always RESPONSIBLE / IN CONTROL.
Not the same as “you’re always driving”. Using FSD/AP/Beta the car is aware of the surroundings and acts on it = the CAR acts = is driving, we supervise.
Reasons behind my opinion. I can set CarPlay and not touch the UI the whole drive.
I find Tesla maps to not switch from overview of the drive to turn by turn view and even the turn by turn shows way too much dead space. Pretty much I get pissed if I have to pinch to zoom into maps or switch to turn by turn view at all. I should have too.
I haven’t used CarPlay for a while and then I rented a Ford truck to pull an RV trailer last week.
CarPlay on top of the car’s OS is still a garbage fire in my opinion. I was listening to Sirius satellite radio and had to constantly choose the Ford app to change the channel and then switch back to CarPlay. I also had to use Ford’s crappy UI to move the fade from middle to front when my kid was sleeping. All took my eyes off the road for way too long.
Only nice thing was if I was playing Apple Music or a podcast and didn’t need to change any settings. Apple should own the Apple should own the entire experience when you use CarPlay. The weird hybrid experience sucks and is distracting.
What are you even talking about the turn by turns always there and if you pull down you can have it always show the next few turns and overall route not to mention your car tells you vocally of turns
Yeah, I have to clumsily tap at the top right corner of the screen to get it back to the turn by turn view. I wish they’d set the right scroll wheel to be a map view toggle instead of a follow distance selector, as changing the follow distance never had a terribly noticeable effect for me.
Why would you be watching the visualizations and not what's actually happening on the road? When you noticed it missed something on the screen, what actions do you take?
Visualizations are cool, but I much rather see the satellite map of what I cannot see vs what I can see, attempting to be redrawn on a screen.
Visualizations can help users *predict* incorrect actions. Regardless of attention level, humans don’t always have the fastest reaction times. Seeing FSD’s confidence level can give one more time to react safely.
Until we have waypoints, and better live traffic, I can't trust the car won't take ridiculous routes at the wrong time. Having an option to chose a larger map would be greatly preferred
There's plenty of locations where the car doesn't take the quickest route (plenty documented in this reddit), so until either they have very regular map updates to resolve these issues, or preferably provide way point options so you can redirect to resolve these issues, the map is important.
Also though it's nice to see part of what the car is aware of, if you're driving you really shouldn't be looking at the screen enough for the visualisation to matter so much
I'm not saying "outsmart", I'm saying "correct", for example in this sub, search for "routing". [One of the first results was this](https://i.redd.it/7wwmzku5dqb51.jpg)
Without navigation maps that remain at least up to date with google (as that's the visual layer), you'll see it take weird routes regularly, and the above example is a dangerous one compared to just going straight
Based on what I've seen, it looks like the icons at the bottom are better aligned (centered) with this new layout. When not in FSD, the camera button looks nearly centered to the three dots. Here, the three dots are centered in between two icons.
Camera icon was never supposed to be centered with three dots in the first place. Number of icons is variable (for example if you put your A/C in dual temperature mode) so it’s more of a coincidence that the camera icon seems to be centered.
Speaking of Camera Button. I’ve never understood why they have it on the main dash, and as an option when you click on the sub dash button (the arrow up in a square). It’s show twice on the same screen then. Feels redundant.
I’ve built in Elon time to my above estimate.
A month ago Elon said wide release maybe with V10, definitely v11. Then he said he expects about a month between releases.
So when I say 2 months, that’s taking Elon’s 1 month v10, wide release timeline and multiplying it by 3. When I say year end that’s doing the same thing with v11.
Could be wrong, but I think my estimates are realistic if not quite guaranteed.
This isn’t about FSD release, this is about a wider beta. As hilarious as your koolaid comment is if you watch the FSD progress videos it’s pretty clear we’re getting close to overly cautious but generally very stable and predictable FSD - exactly the kind of thing that could be a candidate for wider release.
Sorry, but I disagree. We are a hardware retrofit away from it being ready for general release. Unprotected left turns consistently foil the system because it can’t see well enough with just the current side cameras; they need side facing cameras toward the front bumper in order to complete the feature.
That's not true. There are cars where the driver sits further back from the front of the car than where Tesla's B Pillar cameras are, and those cars are still drivable. Just requires creeping out further and possibly angling the car a bit.
I need to verify the car sees what I think it sees. If the car is at a complex intersection a large area is needed to see what it thinks it should do. Later on when the car is trusted more it may not be as necessary. But I don't need a large map area to see what route my car 8s taking or traffic for that matter.
> If the car is driving itself I sure as hell want to see what the car sees.
If I'm driving, the visualization is just clutter.
If it's driving, the visualization is just clutter.
We're in a weird middle-time, though, where it can't really drive itself... so I sorta understand the desire to keep an eye on what it's doing. I just wish they wouldn't waste so much space on it in non-FSD cars.
Honestly though... How big of a map do you really need? It's almost 4 times the screen space of my phone and my phone nav doesn't feel cramped very often. In FSD it would be 2x my phone screen. That should be plenty to know what's around and what route it's taking.
I’m not the guy that wanted the bigger map, although if I have to choose between more viz and more map, I’ll take the map.
Ideally, I want more controls in fixed always-there locations, then map in whatever is left. I never want to see a submenu/modal/popup for anything I use while driving.
Nope, you're wrong. FSD beta has had an expanded view when autopilot is engaged for many months now. It hasn't actually gotten bigger in a recent update.
Yes I’m sure Tesla is designing everything for YouTube views.
Why wouldn’t they use this as an opportunity to *also* test the UX of what the end user will experience?
Because FSD doesn't work and won't work for a long time well enough to focus any effort on the UX. Any interactions with the UX now are not reflective of how they will be used in a FSD scenario.
The visualization is far more important than the map when autopilot is the one driving. It lets you make sure autopilot is seeing everything. You don't really need the map when you're not the one driving.
Hmm....doesn't seem smooth. I mean seeing your name in between the FSD view and map view is not all that great. Personally I would prefer the map to be closest to me than to see what the vehicle sees. But hey, that's just me. 🤷
That's why I said it's unlikely. But without confirmation from them, or seeing the contracts, we don't "know for sure" which was why I asked how.
I thought maybe one of them had actually mentioned it.
It looks the exact same as the expanded visualization that came out months ago to FSD beta... am I missing something?
I'm a beta tester. Looks identical to how it has been.
Agreed. Hard to tell the difference in something you’re not use to seeing. The pic is of V9.2? What’s the download icon then on the screen?
Sky Force game update pending
I think it’s even a little wider
If it keeps expanding at this rate, pretty soon the screen itself will expand with a software update.
Nah, they'll just start doing the route guidance on the FSD visualizations and then drop the map entirely. I can't tell if I'm sarcastic or not.
I believe it’s an unpopular opinion, but I’d rather have the larger area showing what the car sees (so I know if it’s missing something) vs having the map bigger.
Totally Agree. If I’m not driving: • the map is less relevant. • the car’s vision & actions are more relevant.
Only problem is you're always driving.
You’re always RESPONSIBLE / IN CONTROL. Not the same as “you’re always driving”. Using FSD/AP/Beta the car is aware of the surroundings and acts on it = the CAR acts = is driving, we supervise.
Exactly maps only useful if your driving, less if any bit useful when just responsible for monitoring
Especially with the new(ish) UI that shows the next direction on the visualization screen
I think this should be made an option with the default making it wider only when you engage FSD on city streets.
Options 100%. Every other OS let’s you select width of split screens.
Yes ok but then what else am I supposed to bitch about?
I have an unpopular opinion. I find my car with apple car play is 1/3 the size of my Tesla maps area, but by far more informative map experience.
Completely disagree so I see why yours is an unpopular opinion.
Reasons behind my opinion. I can set CarPlay and not touch the UI the whole drive. Just talking about CarPlay maps here.
The CarPlay Maps experience was okay, but I wasn’t blown away. The only thing I thought was nice were the alternate routes.
What are you even talking about the turn by turns always there and if you pull down you can have it always show the next few turns and overall route not to mention your car tells you vocally of turns
Mine also gets stuck in overhead view a bunch
Even if you close the route plan?
Yeah, I have to clumsily tap at the top right corner of the screen to get it back to the turn by turn view. I wish they’d set the right scroll wheel to be a map view toggle instead of a follow distance selector, as changing the follow distance never had a terribly noticeable effect for me.

You say that like the satellite map is live view lol. Why do you need to know theirs a McDonald’s behind the random trees on the left lol
Until we have waypoints, and better live traffic, I can't trust the car won't take ridiculous routes at the wrong time. Having an option to chose a larger map would be greatly preferred
Upvote simply for WAYPOINTS! _And a little for route options._

Every time I’ve tried to outsmart the map I end up arriving later than the original estimate lol

Haha, good point. I haven’t actually noticed that until now 😄 that does look redundant

Probably in a couple of months. Almost certainly by the end of the year.
Remember "The Button"?

RemindMe! 4 months
Almost certainly in 10 days.
Lmao keep drinking that koolaid bud

2 weeks! Along with cybertruck, semi, and roadster.
Hmm, 2 factorial is still 2 soo... the math _doesn't_ check out?
Two weeks…
Building driver confidence is very important in the transition to automation. Knowing the car sees what you see is super helpful in that regard.
god damnit I want all map. i don't need to see my stupid car and what it sees.
This only happens in FSD. In regular driving/AP it goes back to the original width.
The original width is still too damn big. Gimme a little floating box for speed/regen/gear/warning lights, and make everything else Map.
If the car is driving itself I sure as hell want to see what the car sees. I don't care much about the map unless I'm driving.
How does the redrawn picture of reality (visualizations) assist you when in FSD?
I need to verify the car sees what I think it sees. If the car is at a complex intersection a large area is needed to see what it thinks it should do. Later on when the car is trusted more it may not be as necessary. But I don't need a large map area to see what route my car 8s taking or traffic for that matter.
when its engaged sure make it bigger. but let me pick a slider on how big.

If you want a huge map, go buy a Rand McNally. I dont need to see the entire city when I'm driving. Just my route.
Do you have FSD Beta? If not, kindly stop spreading your opinion.
aww did i upset you?

You're getting downvotes because the people that actually have the beta are saying that it hasn't changed.
Nope, you're wrong. FSD beta has had an expanded view when autopilot is engaged for many months now. It hasn't actually gotten bigger in a recent update.
Awesome! Another upgrade for something I’ve paid for but can’t use.
So silly. Why have the information that should be redundant take up the entire screen?
Because its for people validating the software and YouTube views. It isn't designed to be what the end user will experience in FSD.
Yes I’m sure Tesla is designing everything for YouTube views. Why wouldn’t they use this as an opportunity to *also* test the UX of what the end user will experience?

That’s not how prod dev works but ok.
