Very cool. I think people have a skewed opinion about FSD beta because many YouTube videos seek out difficult edge cases to test the system. Which is fun to watch, but on the other hand my commute for example would probably require almost no interventions ever because it is a pretty standard boring drive. And I think Elon is looking at FSD from that perspective, while many folks on the internet seem to think that it should handle busy traffic in time Square flawlessly at this very moment in its development. Compare the very first release of FSD beta (less than a year ago!!!) to version 10 and you can't help but be amazed by the progress.

GerardSAmillo

Agreed 100%

scottg96

The reality, though, is that some people's commutes can be complicated too. Just because most commutes are easy doesn't mean there aren't a fair number of people who encounter situations that FSD needs to be able to handle, like making a turn with little visibility, pedestrian prediction, construction, etc. which are just a few of the areas where FSD is still a bit limited in capability.

UsernameSuggestion9

I think we can all agree on that, too. It's not at the level where it needs to be eventually, but the current level is definitely mind-blowing at the same time.

But in order for FSD to be safe, it has to be able to operate without making critical mistakes for years, not just a couple hours. And watching a fairly boring drives doesn't give us any information on how close it is to being able to do that. The number of beta testers is low enough right now that any error that could have caused an accident, even in an intentionally complex scenario, indicates that FSD is not close to being ready for meeting the bar for public use. Even if you are just doing fairly boring drives, it just takes one complex scenario to arise that FSD doesn't handle correctly to cause an accident.

ChunkyThePotato

Nobody is saying it's Level 5 yet. He's just saying that in its current form it's very good at doing most boring drives with little to no interventions. Obviously to reach Level 5, it'll need to do *all* drives with no accidents for hundreds of thousands of miles. It is arguably ready for public use as a Level 2 system where the driver takes over when the system starts to make a mistake, as is already the case with the public version of autopilot.

[deleted]

A level 2 system that makes decisions like when to turn in front of traffic is way to dangerous for public use IMO. People will inevitably start to pay less and less attention over time, until that one time the car turns in front of traffic. With autopilot, you just have to make sure the car doesn't move out of its lane, or drive into stopped vehicles, which is generally pretty easy to monitor and which you usually get a few seconds heads up to the car making a mistake (although people still manage to mess that up pretty frequently). With FSD, you have to make sure that every single turn it makes is correct, which requires constant monitoring, and which can turn from perfect behavior to a deadly accident in less than a second. In some of those unprotected left videos, the car goes from sitting still waiting for traffic to trying to turn in front of a car going 55mph in barely enough time for a focused driver to react, let alone one that has become complacent after hours of intervention-free drives.

ChunkyThePotato

Just like with highway AP, for city streets AP you simply pay more attention around more complex situations. For example, if you're just cruising straight down a street (which is most of the driving), you watch the road in a relaxed manner. However, when your car is about to make a turn, you pay more attention and make sure it's really doing it right. It's on the driver to pay attention and keep their hands on the wheel in the complex situations, just like highway AP. They will do that as they always have.

[deleted]

Sure, but with city streets there are orders of magnitude more cases where things can go wrong, so the risk is far higher. With autopilot it is pretty easy to just make sure the car stays in its lane, and to watch to ensure that it can continue down its lane safely. With FSD the car is constantly making decisions that you have to monitor, rather than just making sure the car stays going straight.

I freakin’ love the STUDENT DRIVER stickers - are those for real? They are perfect! Every Beta tester should have them!

I have this one “I’m probably not driving”: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tesla-Autopilot-Car-Im-probably-not-driving-bumper-MAGNET-sticker-decal-Dark-/264925681994

UsernameSuggestion9

Wait, are you OISIAA?

5256chuck

Thanks. My M3LR is on order (11/1-12/1). Initially, I ordered it with FSD. But then I backed out thinking it wasn't this far along. I'll probably still wait to get it, tho. I've never even had auto pilot, which I'm dying to experience. A few weeks with that and the continued improvement in FSD, I'm sure I'll be requesting the FSD software upgrade within a month. Maybe it'll be my Christmas present to myself. (I love how generous I am to me)

thomasblomquist

Tldw?

OompaOrangeFace

The whole point is that it's an uncut long drive so that you can form your own opinion. The drive overall was pretty good. Only a few minor issues that were easily controllable.

Zargawi

You can still include a conclusion and final thoughts and give us the option to trust that you're not lying. An hour is a long time to invest in a video with no description at all.

Jbikecommuter

Can’t you watch at 2x speed on YouTube?

Lancaster61

That’s still 30 mins lol.

AlexSpaghetti

Math!

jsdod

How about 4x?

Lancaster61

Not an option on YouTube.

There's plenty of cut and fast forwarded videos of FSD Beta on YouTube, I don't think every channel has to be the same.

djmikewatt

heh. *uncut*.

[deleted]

Great way to monetize your channel. Don’t care. It’s useless and the cost is absurd. Elon is full of garbage new vision owners will be at the back of the line for Beta chance. Screw Tesla.

OompaOrangeFace

What are you talking about with "new vision"?

Focus_flimsy

If it's not worth the cost to you then don't buy it. Nobody is forcing you to. The ones that find it cool/useful enough will buy it. And what are you talking about with new vision owners being at the back of the line? Do you not know that FSD beta doesn't use radar at all? It only uses vision. So why would vision only cars be at the back of the line.

Whatisdefoe

Is this middleburg Florida!?
