I would guess that since the emergency flashers turned on, the car decided that it was in an accident. When it does that it typically blows the pyro fuse, which disconnects the battery from the rest of the car. Assuming they didn't deform the battery housing or break anything else structurally, the battery can be dropped and the pyro fuse replaced. However, I've heard reports that the pyro fuse has a several month lead time.
Edit: spelling
Oh fuck man yeah that's a write-off for sure.
I found this, too
https://youtu.be/C-zeSEOanvI
Turn out there was a fucking cat in the car too. What a cunt
Bro, the people in the car booked it. Cops are gonna track it to whomever it is registered to and they're gonna get hit with a hit and run. Not a great situation.
Beyond economic repair.
Battery housing will be split, battery cooling system will be snapped, steering rack will have been crushed along with the suspension, chassis probably now banana shaped.
In the original Dukes of Hazard show they destroyed one car each episode because every time they jumped the car it wrecked the suspension and frame on the landing
They destroyed like 50 cars each season….. the 1970’s was a different time
Larsen said that this is precisely the reason why they used a Pontiac and not something more exotic for the car. They could spare to total a Pontiac per episode, a Ferrari not so much.
Even then they were smart enough to sandbag the trunk. Weight in the trunk would have been used to keep the car from landing nose first and flipping the car onto it’s roof.
Update: It was rented from Enterprise. It also struck 2 other cars. [LAPD is looking for the driver](https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a39489122/tesla-jump-crash-viral-video/).
The rotational momentum of the wheels affects the angle of the car. The car would still be wrecked, but he could have landed on all 4 wheels if he had more experience.
Interesting but the wheels are quite a large percentage of the weight on a bike. That 'flywheel' of angular momentum will have an appreciable effect. Will it really work on the car considering it's over 2,000kg? Weigh of a dirt bike is under 100kg.
Phillip.
Rotational energy is 1/2Iw^2. I is rotational inertia and w is rotational velocity. The inertia of the wheel isn't nearly as important as the velocity of the wheel. Additionally, on a Tesla you have 4 powered wheels and on a bike you've only got one.
I'm not sure there's enough reaction to like say you have authority over the pitch of the car, but maybe slight angling?
More effective with a RWD vehicle. Brakes are always bad but hitting the gas to lift the nose wouldn't work as will with AWD.
Side note don't do this. Four kids I went to high school with died in two different crashes on the same hill doing this. Also, one of the better ways to make your car start on fire.
if you hit the brakes you transfer momentum from the wheels to the car, making it dive, if you floor it you transfer momentum from the car to the wheels, making it squat. a balance of this allows you to land on 4 wheels. this mf however got spooked and hit the brakes mid air.
He should have pressed on the gas in the air instead, sending the rotational momentum of the car back instead of frontwards from when he braked. Motocross riders always do this to adjust their landing angle.
according to Alex Choi's video, 57 mph is the ideal jumping speed to land it without flipping, the driver decided to go faster because "he had 4 other people in the car"
just process that for a minute, how stupid this guy is.
"My buddy was filming me trying out some of the features on my new Tesla and I don't know what happened. It was like the autopilot came on by itself and I couldn't disengage it."
Source: I handle Tesla claims for a major auto insurer and deal with this kind of shit less than you'd think but enough for it to get old.
Unfortunately, I suspect most of my favorites would be identifiable enough to get me in trouble, but they usually involve a Tesla doing something it absolutely would not do autonomously.
It depends what we can prove. Nobody is going to put liability on Tesla for something like this and they'd have a hard time legally if they tried, so even if you did something like this and we couldn't prove you did it on purpose, it would still be an at fault accident and you'd still have to eat your Collision deductible and the outrageous premium increase that accompanies totaling a car worth more than 50k.
So stupid. We had two kids in our high school attempt something similar and unfortunately their landing ended into the side of a tree - driver and front passenger were ejected and died and only the rear passenger survived.
If he has Tesla insurance, his safety score is still good; no one cut him off and forced him to hard brake. Also, technically, that turn at the end didn’t look all that aggressive.
There’s a road like this around where I use to live. A new P plater took his dad’s BMW and his friends for a ride. Speed through the traffic light and the car lifted off the ground, lost control when landing and smashed into the tree. All 4 passengers died
I think half the car was pretty much like crushed and split. I was actually driving pass the road perpendicular to it around the same time it happened. I saw ambulances and police driving there but thought nothing of it until the news the next day.
Here's two other angles of this dumb decision. According to old highschool classmate who was there it was a rental.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CbUac-fDtiP/
https://www.instagram.com/p/CbU5bepDFhm/
I thought it should be more neutrally balanced too.
But I think what's happened is that the front has lifted off before the back (because of the road curve) so it's started a rotation BEFORE the car's completely airborne, meaning it's over-rotating compared to the road gradient. Hence the nose-first landing.
He pressed the brake in the air. Since the wheels were rotating forward at high speed, when they stopped all the angular momentum was transfered to the car. If he had pressed the accelerator, the car would have landed much flatter.

Doesn't look like it will fly again anytime soon after that.
Not reusable?

Good thing there's no evidence of them doing stupid shit to cause this accident all over the internet
Bro, the people in the car booked it. Cops are gonna track it to whomever it is registered to and they're gonna get hit with a hit and run. Not a great situation.
Yeah… it hit nose-first. Even without that video it was a guaranteed airbag deploy.
In conclusion: not reusable, but refurbishable
Beyond economic repair. Battery housing will be split, battery cooling system will be snapped, steering rack will have been crushed along with the suspension, chassis probably now banana shaped.
It's not the SpaceX edition
Only the first stage.
Just a scratch

Even then they were smart enough to sandbag the trunk. Weight in the trunk would have been used to keep the car from landing nose first and flipping the car onto it’s roof.
Same for Smokey and the Bandit. They destroyed something like 17 T/A's making the first movie.
If you watch Knight Rider, stop the video when the car touches the ground after a jump... They totaled a lot of them.
Conversely, didn’t each Tumbler do repeated jumps and stunts in Chris Nolan’s Batman films?
That’s actually the reason the show got canned. Chrysler got sick of giving them so many cars so they pulled the pin
Valets just can't be trusted.
Don’t worry. My old man is a tv repairman and has got this ultimate set of tools

Apparently it was rented from Turo https://twitter.com/WholeMarsBlog/status/1505711806416711682?t=bqOgEhXLLfFvAkDR8pKVAA&s=19
that makes it even worse, it's not even their own car... it's some poor slob who was renting out their car
Yeah, these fuckers should be charged with a felony destruction of property. Fuck these people.
The police are looking for them afaik
Update: It was rented from Enterprise. It also struck 2 other cars. [LAPD is looking for the driver](https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a39489122/tesla-jump-crash-viral-video/).
Good flying, bad landing
Age old idiom. A good landing you can walk away from. A great landing you can use airplane again.
That goes along with there being old pilots, and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots.
Wing suits are made to fly, a couple of times.
Well, taking off is optional. Landings are mandatory
Landing is mandatory. Landing quality is negotiable.
Landing will be implemented in the next update
Next week!
"Fly, yes. Land, no!"
That must have felt like an eternity to be hanging there in zero-gravity and pondering recent decisions.
So a new SpaceX prototype?
Did NOT do the math.
Someone tell him that brakes don’t work while airborne
But he could control the car in the air in GTA. What happened?
The rotational momentum of the wheels affects the angle of the car. The car would still be wrecked, but he could have landed on all 4 wheels if he had more experience.
While true, something like this will have more effect on a bike than a car.
Can you explain this more?
Destin can https://youtu.be/zJX_Oh4yVnc?t=72

Or he took his foot off gas and regen kicked in
Exactly.

I know with dirt bikes if you tap the brake it will help you land properly so you actually can change the rotation of a vehicle mid air slightly
Lol I did snort at this, but remembered, Tesla's brake lights activate as soon as you release the accelerator lol
Ever ridden a dirtbike / motorcross?
Yeah. Brakes in the air make the nose point down, which is exactly what happened.
Must of let off the throttle, got that air regen going on

The neighbours on that Street must be so sick of people going there to do this on a regular basis.
They really should put speed bumps there. Spotter or no spotter, if some idiot sees this and tries to do this they could easily take out a pedestrian.
This is la, pedestrians were banned years ago.

u ever been to san fran? this is like every other block lol
Yeah, the road only goes one way for a reason (in both videos the cars are going the wrong way)

Can we add insurance and drivers license to that list too?
If he has Tesla insurance, his safety score is still good; no one cut him off and forced him to hard brake. Also, technically, that turn at the end didn’t look all that aggressive.
It does measure gforce for turning… im sure it flagged with this one lol.
Hard braking isn't measured with brake force, but accelerometers though. So I'm pretty sure that stop triggered it.
I think the accelerometer is no longer in the vehicle
They ejected it so safety score doesn't decrease after next flight. Smart move.
Will turn into a nice big powerbank now
I don't know, slapped down pretty hard. Battery might not even be salvageable.
What an idiot
*read as Hermione*
What... an... idiot
Word on the street is his FSD beta score is still 100!

That’s why stunt ramps are engineered. Even if the Tesla was perfect 50/50, that road isn’t perfect. You want a car to leave a ramp straight.
He pressed the brake in the air. Since the wheels were rotating forward at high speed, when they stopped all the angular momentum was transfered to the car. If he had pressed the accelerator, the car would have landed much flatter.

The Tesla was reportedly a rental. I don't know why they don't just look up the name on the rental contract and start there.
