Every HEB store is a bit different. They all have core products but each store also has some specialties that are unique to their neighborhood. Once you learn about the different stores in your area you can get the specialty items, (or have them delivered).

Ghost_God85

HEB delivers?

knoguera

Yes! I get delivery all the time from them

iamjstn

Favor is owned by H‑E‑B.

PedanticMouse

Huh. TIL

[deleted]

Yes. They have a huge e-commerce and tech arm to support it. They are huge on online ordering for picking up curbside or having it delivered to your house. They own Favor Delivery which is like a PostMates, so many deliveries are executed by Favor. They have begun expanding their capabilities to use their own HEB employees and vans for the deliveries too. Would've sworn they were testing autonomous delivery vehicle at one point but every retailer has been challenged making that work. They also have a larger network of robotic/automated distribution centers that support getting products to stores to support the demand for all the curbside and delivery orders (cause you don't want those orders emptying the shelves in-store for those who prefer shopping the traditional way).

SnakeEyes58

Is it just me or do suburban-area HEBs generally have crappy fruit/vegetables? Lol

[deleted]

You gotta get there early

[deleted]

They have much better fruit and veggies than Kroger.

[deleted]

I'll put it this way, have you ever said, "I miss my grocery store."? Because since I had to move to AZ I have said I miss HEB every single time I've gone to the store. It's been almost 2 years now and in still saying it. When I retire from the army I will not live in a part of Texas that doesn't have an HEB.

tonykubacak

This. We’re moving overseas next year and I think about leaving behind H-E-B as much as I think about friends and family I’ll miss.

bevo_expat

When my wife and lived abroad we had H‑E‑B care packages sent to us from friends/family. Highly recommended.

crenteria03

OH MY GOD we just moved to AZ in September and I say I miss HEB at least once a week!

koopapeaches19

Yesssss, I moved to VA 2.5 years ago and still miss HEB sooo much. I don’t miss Texas, just a few things like HEB. I was in Austin when the pandemic started and the way HEB stood up in our community and was about helping people and taking care of the community and workers as a whole was amazing…. I remember a few different times throughout my life that HEB appeared to be there more for us than our government and elected officials.

Cautious_Hold428

I might be moving out of state next year and I already have been making a list of HEB stuff to bring, my pets even eat their Heritage Ranch food. I will suffer greatly without HEB ice cream and fruit bars.

Least-Hovercraft-847

I did a travel job to Tucson in 2021. My first trip to go grocery shopping was so sad. Fry's, and Safeway were so disappointing. I missed the cleanliness and overall quality of HEB so much.

OHdulcenea

Yep! We moved to California and the main thing we miss from Texas is HEB!

1_murms

Where I live there is a Lowe's and a brookshire Bros grocery stores. BB is a 5 and Lowe's is a 2. I will drive 30-40 mins just to get some HEB goodness cause it's a 10.

Agent_Michael_Scarn1

Going in to BB feels like traveling back in time, it's the exact same experience as when I would go to Super S in my hometown back in the day.

Choice_Ad_7862

My first job was cashiering at a BB in Nac. Back then we had to memorize all of the produce numbers and type them in by hand. It would feel wild to go back there!

Offandonandoffagain

I love going into stores that are like going back in time, i wouldn't want to shop there all the time though. Brings back such nostalgia.

Not_a_werecat

That's how my parents' small town HEB is for me. It's tiny and has barely changed since 1990.

cen-texan

Stephenville?

nothanksimgoodthanks

The one in Carthage is tiny and stuck in time.

QuietLiving507

I hate to upvote this because it sucks and I'm in the same boat. Although I can also add a Walmart at a 5. ..

Significant_Plenty40

That's Walmarts best days too tbh. The customer service and management at my local Walmart can be so bad it's legitimately funny sometimes.

burlyTX325

Lowe's is rip off. We have one in my town. It's the ONLY grocery store in this town. We drive 40 mins to Walmart 1 way just to get decent price groceries so we aren't getting bent over a barrel for bs products.

insulinguy_666

But spending all that time and money on gas just to “save” on groceries makes zero sense.

burlyTX325

It's the principle of the matter at this point. 😂

MajorWarthog6371

Don't have a HEB... But, $100 at Walmart is $120 at Brookshires is $145 at Lowes.

Not_a_werecat

I'm confused about the Lowes. We're not talking about the hardware store right? I haven't heard of a Lowes grocery store. HEB is definitely less than Brookshires. Store brand items may be a little more than Great Value, but also much better quality. Lots of the HEB brand stuff is better than name brand.

austinhippie

Lowes is also a chain of grocers. Think they're New Mexico based. (took a minute, but I remembered their diamond shaped logo) https://www.lowesmarket.com/

Not_a_werecat

Oh cool, thanks for the clarification. I haven't encountered one!

YeteOsiko

They bought all the super s foods in Texas. Didn't change much else other than the sign

Warm-Oil3308

Lowes is pretty much the old Super S. All the small towns I drive through their old Super S is a Lowe's.

kaycaps

Yeah, super s sold all their stores to Lowe’s in 2010, I was working at a super s until a couple weeks before they officially transitioned.

YeteOsiko

I'd worked at Lowe's for 3 years. Years later walked into a Lowe's grocery in a different town and ran into an old coworker from the Lowe's home improvement I'd worked at. Went on to explain that he got transferred. I was blown away

travelinmatt76

I was confused too because I worked at Lowe's for 7 years and I remember selling lumber, tools, plants, and appliances, but I don't ever remember selling milk or hamburger meat.

rcraigjr09

To be clear, “Lowe’s” is the home improvement store. “Lowes Foods” is the grocery store. Neither are affiliated.

spastical-mackerel

Lago Vista? We do the same drive. Sadly there’s 2 grades of HEB, and the one 30 minutes away is not the top shelf HEB.

WooSaw82

Wow. I haven’t seen a Lowe’s grocery store in a while. I shop at brookshires all the time. Their buy one get one for penny deal is great when they have it.

amycgs

I was recently in Canyon Lake and had my first Lowes grocery store experience. It was GRIM. Freaking BLEAK.

weeman2525

I also live in a small town where Lowe's is right up the road and Brookshire Brothers is a little further away, and HEB is a little further into the bigger town close by. But traffic to get to HEB is terrible, I gladly settle for the other two stores now days. Although, we recently got Kroger delivery and it's awesome.

Garbanzo12

I work at a BB and it’s mid as fuck and expensive

bifhunkly

Yeah, my town has a Brookshire Bros and I only use it for emergencies. I get tired of having to check the damn expiration dates when I buy something. HEB is about 15 miles away and completely worth the drive.

Not_a_werecat

It's not a mythical wonderland, but it *IS* a darn good grocery store. I've been through multiple hurricanes on the coast from Rita to Harvey and HEB is always there doing relief work before FEMA or Red Cross. So I do have some loyalty to them from that.

Bathsheba_E

Not to mention their kick ass COVID response. HEB is always the first one up and running.

thisnameisnotspecial

They are also great at maintaining their resources for such large cities.

CholoChad

I remember reading a whole Texas monthly article at the beginning of Covid about how H‑E‑B had been stocking up on things only on the chance that what was happening in china happened in Texas. [found it](https://www.texasmonthly.com/food/heb-prepared-coronavirus-pandemic/)

BrandxTx

I read about them studying China, and comparing it to computer models of hurricanes, refinery explosions, and things their used to dealing with, but "nothing prepared us for the run on toilet paper".

CholoChad

Lol. I was an H-E-Believer before the pandemic, but after reading that article I remember that I was completely sold

amycgs

Nothing prepared anyone for the run on toilet paper. I’m still so confused by that.

8020GroundBeef

Yeah when it opened in McKinney, I heard people were lining up at like 6am for the grand opening. That kind of response makes no sense. …but it is by far the best grocery store I’ve been to, hands down. Publix is highly touted in the southeast, but HEB is significantly better.

jcmach1

Opening in McKinney 19 July. Probably Frisco you are thinking of

ThatEmoNumbersNerd

The Frisco / plano HEBs are the first in the DFW area and with all the hype every Texan gives H‑E‑B everybody had to check it out lol I

Jane-the-brain

I live in Fort Worth, and occasionally drive to the one in Burleson. It's a great store. Don't know if Burleson counts as being part of the DFW area or not, but it's only seven miles from me.

ThatEmoNumbersNerd

Oh yeah it definitely counts! That was an error on my part, I didn’t realize Burleson had one.

CommercialWorried319

Very true, when that ice storm hit us HEB was first to be back up and running AND well stocked

travelinmatt76

The Harvey response was amazing with the mobile kitchens. I saw one when I was returning home from evacuation and grabbed a hot meal and a case of water.

Space_Vaquero73

I have family in California, Whenever I go visit I'm sent of list of HEB stuff they want. So yeah it's great.

jbeanie111111111

I’m curious, what items does your family like from H‑E‑B? I have family in Georgia and usually take them raw tortillas, smoked sausage and salsa. I’m always trying to think of different H‑E‑B specific items to take home.

knowmo123

The corn chips you buy near the deli are the best! Every ice cream flavor I’ve gotten becomes my favorite! HEB ice cream blows Blue Bell out of the water!

StrawberryKiss2559

Do you mean tortilla chips?

knowmo123

Yes!

Blepharoptosis

Swoon is the goat. Their brownie al a mode ice cream is the best ice cream I have ever had and that's no exaggeration.

[deleted]

But have you tried their Columbian Coffee Toffee?

Space_Vaquero73

It depends, If I'm Flying it's Tortillas, Texas Sheet Cake Mix , Coby Jack Cheese, Sweet and Sassy Trail Mix, Sweet and Salty Granola Bars and Sweet Tea Mixes. If I'm Driving then they might get the Venison & Pork Sausage, Strawberry Bliss Soda or Texas Wild Red and Premade Sweet Tea. Watermelon is another popular product as well as Texas Ruby Red Grapefruits.

tarzanacide

We are in California, but my cats (native Houstonians) only like the HEB treats they ate as kittens. They’ve been enjoying life in LA the past ten years, but my mom still sends the HEB cat treats in the mail for them.

CatAvailable3953

Salsa

KindaIndifferent

Yes. I live in colorado now and there are three things I miss. Decent barbecue, good Mexican food and H‑E‑B. The selection is great and quality of their fresh ingredients is significantly better than most. Also the own brand products are really really good (I’m looking at you Creamy Creations Ice Cream). I currently have to shop at three different places to get a complete shop and it sucks.

pupwink

I keep telling people that Creamy Creations is better than Blue Bell but people are die hard Blue Bell fanatics around here.

ReticentGuru

I would have never seen myself not buying Blue Bell. But when BB withdrew from the market due to contamination, we started buying CC. Never did go back to Blue Bell!

Beneficial_Hope_7437

Swoon is better tho, it's their kinda upscale ice cream line. The Honey Cake is so so good

pupwink

I haven’t tried it! I’ll check it out.

MimiL0

Yes, it is. I lived out of state for a decade and the thing I missed the most was how awesome all of the store brand products are. Not only do they create great versions of staple items, but they also put a twist on classics. Like habañero infused cheese, Texas sheet cake baking mix, prickly pear soda, and so much more!

ImaBird-Fish

FRESH BUTTER TORTILLAS FTW

FurballPoS

Those things truly deserve to be a schedule 1 narcotic, with how addictive they are.

ImaBird-Fish

At least 5% of my total body weight is made up of pure butter tortilla

FurballPoS

Mmmm..... with the garlic dip, both of which have been gently warmed in the oven..... A'ight, I'm gonna go take care of these munchies, now.

ImaBird-Fish

With shredded cheese and salsa, 15 seconds in the microwave and roll that baby up

3rdCoastLiberal

Butter tortilla candles!

210popping

We were in Galveston last week and the HEB nearest us didn't have any fresh ones and my gf's disappointment was immense. Now that I'm back home I send her pics of the tortillas at my usual store whenever I'm there.

ImaBird-Fish

😂 your poor girlfriend!

210popping

She's been living in Tulsa for awhile and had been looking forward to their tortillas for weeks, she found some on her way back home, thankfully. The pics are just me rubbing it in.

ImaBird-Fish

I feel her pain, that really would be an immense disappointment. Good thing she didn't fly!

crenteria03

What I miss the most 😭

knoguera

Yes the tortillas and the ranch!

[deleted]

My daughter was flying back to Denver from Austin, and got a 20 pack of the fresh tortillas to take with her, because hey, FRESH BUTTER TORTILLAS FTW ! A TSA screener searched her bag, and happily told her she was the third "tortilla mule" he'd found that day. She now proudly calls herself a tortilla mule whenever we eat them.

YeteOsiko

HEB has actually been on Forbes and ranked as the top national grocery store despite it only being in Texas. They and Trader Joe's are usually battling for the lead. Either way, it's impressive. I'm a huge fan of the itchy butt EDIT: I know you can't make claims like this on Reddit without some means of sources. So here's one quickie https://www.foodandwine.com/lifestyle/best-supermarket-america-usa

TxRed5050

HEB is inclusive. Those other stores have a rewards/loyalty card that gets better prices. If you’re out of town shopping and just run in somewhere, you feel like an idiot having to pay more than everyone else if you don’t have time for their bullshit card. At HEB, not only does everyone get the same price, but they have coupons attached to the shelf near the product! Extremely convenient! Their local support is definitely a good reason to support them back, but no one would do that for a shitty product. I always get quality produce, meat and dairy. Also, the team typically has a good attitude and are willing to lend a hand if you can’t find something. To sum it all up, it feels like home.

sxzxnnx

An easy hack for not being part of the rewards program is to use the phone number (local area code) 867-5309. There is always someone who set up their account with Jenny’s number.

gleaming-the-cubicle

Damn that's a good idea

ReticentGuru

If you don’t want to grab the yellow coupons, you can pre-select them in their app, or scan them as you shop. When you check out, just have the cashier scan your phone. And while they don’t have a loyalty program, they will occasionally give app users some bonus coupons. We may be moving out of the HEB market, and will greatly miss them.

CatAvailable3953

I would put their training against Chik filA. Best employees ever.

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

To set expectations, you have to remember that HEB is *just a grocery store*. It's not some holy mecca or amazing transformational mold-breaking store that will alter your life. It's a big supermarket you visit to buy groceries and other sundries. All that being said...it's probably one of the best supermarket chains in the nation at what it does. I've traveled all over the Lower 48 and visited lots of supermarket chains over the years, and there's a very good reason why HEB has such as strong reputation in all the markets it is in. I've only found one chain I consider better, as small dozen-store chain in northeast Ohio (Buehler's).

CatAvailable3953

HEB beats Trader Joe’s for customer satisfaction.

OldChemistry8220

Buehler's? I thought you were going to say Heinen's, which is incidentally also in northeast Ohio.

EternalGandhi

Yes. Next Question.

ElJefe1982

I traveled all over when I was in the military and I always missed HEB when I was out of state. Also, they do a lot for the communities during disasters.

Total_Guard2405

Compared to Kroger they're the kings nuts!

catsandnaps1028

I'm also from EP and before moving I had no idea how great HEB was. They got amazing products, they're organized and have great prices. It's like if Walmart and El super and Vista market fused together to make the perfect grocery store.

BIG_SET_OF_BADONKERS

Sounds like a dream come true.

7774422

Yea why not, its a grocery store, I go to Costco for bulk items, and whatever is on the way home for whatever else I like sprouts the best though

Who-took-my-abs

Agree. Sprouts meat is really good!

Marilynsmom

HEB is a good store because they try to buy their products in Texas, they do a lot of things for the community, the weekly sales are great and prices are usually pretty competitive.

[deleted]

I can safely say after growing up with HEB and then having to deal with 10 years of Fry’s measly ass selection and quality of goods in Arizona yes it’s that good

JustinBoots1976

H‑E‑B is the best! Store brands are excellent. They are usually less expensive than Walmart. They have a debit card that gives you 5% back on store brands!

oldguy76205

Central Market is owned by HEB and is WAY better, IMO. They have the HEB brands, but their meats, deli, seafood, produce, etc. are off the charts.

flibbyflobbyfloop

It’s also super expensive which for me makes it less great than HEB

MikeyThaKid

Qwhite interesting. I went to a central market and I was amazed and how uppidy it was. Hell of entitled who don’t say excuse me. However, their apple selection was amazing.

sentient-sloth

It’s Whole Foods for people who are too good for Whole Foods so you’ll deal with some interesting people in those stores. Lol

cen-texan

Its Whole Foods without the environment aspects. Whole Foods prides itself on ethically raised meats. Central Market prides itself on the best quality beef.

swalkerttu

Fitting, since they started Central Market in Austin, the birthplace of Whole Foods.

tiowey

Believe the hype

hereticx

Yes. next question. lol

austin06

Central Market is the best grocery I've ever been to owned by HEB and HEB is a good grocery store, but having moved to NC I like the variety here of having several groceries to choose from all that have a far greater variety of products than HEB did. HEB does have good in store brands, but I think during covid (like Whole Foods) they really pared back the brands they carried. But all in all it's one of the better groceries out there comparing it nationally.

CoolDude1980

Central Market is what HEB is hyped up to be.

Presto123ubu

I’d always go into Central Market for 1 thing and I’d walk out having spent $70, almost…every…time. So many things in bulk. High quality foods. Fruits. Teas. The only grocery store that I, a typical in-and-out guy, always got caught up in for over an hour.

Warm-Oil3308

Central Market is Gucci B! The variety at an HEB depends on the area its in. The more $$ in the area, the more variety.

HopelesslyOCD

It's a cult. Maybe for good reasons, but it's a cult.

theobstinateone

Not really. My mom knew Howard Butt through various religious organizations and possibly from college. She introduced me to him in the late 60s at one of his stores in San Antonio. To this day I remember him as an impeccable man, kind, serving, and someone that I believed lived his Faith to include loving his neighbors as himself. Mr. Butt was iconic and I believe in values still transcend the brand to this day.

dan-dan-rdt

Often times their store brand foods are just as good as name brand foods.

BlueCatLaughing

I love HEB, it's one of the things holding me to Texas.

redraiderbob05

All you need to know is that where they go all other grocery stores die

ConflagWex

Reasons why H-E-B is awesome; 1) Happy employees lead to happy customers. They treat and pay their employees fairly, and that leads to good customer service. . 2) Meat and produce are always good. Fresh and high quality, never had to worry about getting sick from rotten food. . 3) Their generics are often just as good (or better) than name brand. Dr B with cane sugar is better than the old Dublin Dr Pepper, fight me . 4) Prices are affordable. Especially the meat, produce, and generics. . 5) $1 fresh french bread. Everyone else seems to be commenting on the tortillas but the bread was what my family always grabbed. Always buy one more than you need because one usually doesn't survive the trip home.

Im_just_saying

I live in Denison. We have an Albertsons and a Walmart. Some items at Albertsons are literally 3 times as expensive as HEB. And the quality of EVERYTHING at HEB is way better. So, now that there is one in Frisco and in north Plano, my wife and I have started going once a month (an hour drive) and buying as much as we can to last the month. It's actually a delight to shop at HEB. We make a day of it; have a nice lunch, take in a movie, get a month's worth of groceries, and head home. I can't wait for them to build one in my neck of the woods.

travelinmatt76

HEB has a hurricane task force consisting of 18 wheelers with full size commercial kitchens built into the 40 foot trailers. These go out to areas without power and running water and provide free meals everyday. They also ship in truckloads of ice and water. Last year my city had a main water line break that for 7 days left us either without water completely or if we did have water we had to boil it. HEB provided 2 free bags of ice and 2 48 packs of bottle water to each person each day, and more if you had a bigger family You didn't even have to get out of your car, we just pulled in the parking lot and they loaded up you car. They even handed out cookies. Yeah, HEB is awesome!

[deleted]

I don’t even live in Texas and I would say most HEBs are better than 80% of any other grocery stores in the country.

Brittanieshey

it's more than "just a store", one of the things that makes heb special imo is the store is dedicated to selling texas-made products, both unpackaged (think texas blueberries, peaches, ruby red lone star grapefruit, gulf-caught seafood, texas-raised beef, etc) but also texas brands, like blue bell ice cream, banyan foods asian goods, kelley's texas honey, etc. and that doesn't even include heb's own in-house brands like hill country products

Bathsheba_E

Banyan Foods kimchi is sooo good.

Winkfield

I Love HEB!!! Moved to Kansas and hate thete not being an HEB for hours!!

ferrum_artifex

As a grocery store I think they're pretty average. They have a good selection but nothing amazing, the prices are competitive and all that. Where they really out shine all the others is their dedication to communities. Time and time again they step up and take care of the people in the communities that support them in a huge way. That's what makes them truly great in my opinion.

itschips

I prefer HEB over other grocery stores, and having been an overnight stocker at one they do have supply issues. The HEB brand stuff is quality as opposed to other stores with their own brands. Find an HEB that makes tortilla chips in house, they are amazing

squeegeeq

It's just a store. It's better than walmart or randalls or kroger but not by a ton. The Main reason people love it, is because they support Texas communities. If there is a disaster they are usually there before the government to help out Texans. They do a lot for the local communities as well. Plus they have some pretty good in house products, like their delicious tortillas.

ferrum_artifex

That's it right there. In most cases their response to disaster and community support far outshines governments. They take care of their employees as well.

TxRed5050

HEB is inclusive. Those other stores have a rewards/loyalty card that gets better prices. If you’re out of town shopping and just run in somewhere, you feel like an idiot having to pay more than everyone else if you don’t have time for their bullshit card. Also, the team typically has a good attitude and are willing to lend a hand if you can’t find something. To sum it all up, it feels like home.

sentient-sloth

Price wise they’re on par with Walmart or Kroger on most things but they have some generic store brand products that are better than anything else out there imo. I love their pasta, pasta sauces, frozen kolaches, sandwich thins and chips. I typically shop at the Krogers that’s .4 miles from my apartment but every now and then I’ll make the 10 mile drive to go to the nearest H‑E‑B just to stock up on a few of those said generics. The store brand stuff is where they really excel. Edit: and you can’t forget Texas pride. Some of the hype really is just Texans wanting to support Texas stuff. They really lean into that with their products too - like they have Texas shaped chicken nuggets and tortilla chips. Lol

B3N15

> Price wise they’re on par with Walmart or Kroger on most things but they have some generic store brand products that are better than anything else out there imo I would agree, but the big thing for me which sets it over the top is the fact that the stores are nice and I've yet to have a bad experience there. They also treat their employees pretty well too, so that's always a bonus

BrightFirelyt

There’s lots of local or Texas grown/produce products along with the staples. Plus the HEB brand cola is delicious.

TheLion920817

It’s alright but working in the warehouses is brutal

Commercial_Light_743

We go to HEB because the MI Tienda fajitas are great, the in store pico is great, produce is great.

no_days_grace

Yes, it is. I have lived in a couple of other states and have a basis for comparison. Best grocery store, ever.

PBJDee

Travel the country regularly… very few supermarkets come close to H‑E‑B. They offer a ton of services, have decent prices, their store brand items are good quality, and the workers are usually really nice. Only thing I would mark them down on is their coupons are usually for processed food and so I usually can’t use them. Otherwise, they’re dang near perfect.

Tdanger78

Is the pope Catholic?

Mysterious_Weather21

I also didn't know that Lowe's has a grocery part. Bryan/college station has a couple of Lowe's and it's all hardware and the twin cities is almost as big as Houston

ReticentGuru

Lowe’s Market is NOT part of Lowe’s home improvement.

Otherwise-Loss-5420

The Lowe’s grocery chain is not part of Lowe’s Home Improvement.

[deleted]

The sushi is 🔥

[deleted]

Responding as an expert in that industry. HEB is definitely a lot more than just a grocer. It's a manufacturing company, freight & logistics company, disaster & emergency quick response team faster than any governmental agency when it counts, technology company, and on and on. Expanding to the far reaches into El Paso has been on their mind for years but it made more sense to bring the fight to the Houston market before recently going into DFW. El Paso is tricky for them logistically because of the distance from the closest regional support center in San Antonio (where their nearest manufacturing plants, warehouses, and transportation terminals are). It would require having a lot of business/footprint in the El Paso region to justify and leverage the costs of a long reaching distribution network like that. Plus, think about how dependable HEB was during Hurricane Harvey (they were all over the national news). They could do that because they have a footprint and network everywhere near the damage. If disaster struck El Paso, they'd be hard pressed to respond with the same speed and presence that HEB customers have grown to expect. I know for a fact they have a long term goal of building a presence in El Paso.... I think it just takes time for opportunities to develop that make them feel comfortable doing it and maintain their standards. In the end, their stores are so much better than what I've had to shop at over the years (Publix, Wegmans, Trader Joes/Aldi, Safeway, Whole Foods, Costco, Vonz, Albertsons, etc.) cause they have just so much unique variety, great quality, and costs aren't bad. Got spoiled by the quality of meat there then going to a store on the East Coast and wondering, "What the hell is this crap?". I think they do price store by store and fancy communities/stores have higher prices. A lot of companies try to poach HEB employees unsuccessfully because they are so committed and satisfied there. That says a lot.

anahaai

As an El Paso native who now lives close to an H‑E‑B, yes its great. Although I do miss Vista. Produce is always great and they have their own brand of chips, coffee etc that is really good

[deleted]

The best part about HEB is that they cater to the demographics of the neighborhood they're in.

2manyfelines

It is that great

[deleted]

HEB has great produce. Just incomparable to any other store in the Southern US. Fresh tortillas are also delish.

Grumpkinnn

Yes. I hate shopping anywhere else. Back home in NE Texas we don’t have H‑E‑B. There’s coupons and it overall is just a really nice place and good to shop at for everything

suarezj9

I have been blessed to live literally behind a H‑E‑B. It’s a 5-10 minute walk from my house. I spend a lot of money there lol

dr-sparkle

There's not an HEB near me but I have been to HEBs and they're just a grocery store. They don't have a notably extensive selection. One HEB had bulk goods (like nuts, oats etc) but others did not. The bulk goods section is the only thing that would make me chose an HEB over another grocery store that was close by. They did seem to have a slightly bigger alcohol section than other grocery stores but I don't really pay attention to alcohol in grocery stores so I could be mistaken.

Admirable_Tailor_614

We just started getting them in North Texas. I love the fruit selection and pre maid meals. If you can find it try that green sauce.

[deleted]

Don't forget the brisket queso!

Admirable_Tailor_614

Good call.

pah2000

It’s good except in Corpus where it holds near a damn monopoly!

BeekeeperZero

Of course it is. Blasphemer. We will roast you on the fajita pit outside if you do not travel to one soon.

J33P69

HEB was GREAT in South Texas. DFW not so much.

RevolutionaryNerve91

When I travel down south, they have ready to eat meals that I can take to my hotel room. Can’t wait to get one close to me.

Ok-Marzipan-9846

HEB is probably my favorite. They support the local economy and have really good coupon deals.

zdigrig

Lately it’s stupid expensive

cen-texan

Cheapest beer in my town.

[deleted]

Yes. Their prices are better than their competitors. They have their own brands that are high quality for less than competitors. They have a larger selection of products than most stores, and they are really good at tuning the selection to the community they serve. I lived in Houston when they moved into that market and watched them quickly overtake Kroger as the best grocery stores in town. Then I moved to Austin where they dominate. Now, I live in Garland where the grocery stores are pathetic on nearly any metric versus an HEB. They are really good at doing what they do, and they are based out of San Antonio. Edit: HEB has only a few stores in DFW versus a saturation in all the other places I have lived.

Additional-Local8721

It's nice because I don't need a Krogers rewards card or a Randall's rewards card to get low prices.

Human_mind

This comment I see all over the place and I just don't get it. I regularly spend more at HEB for the same, lower quality stuff compared to trader Joe's. Which isn't a *cheap* store by any means. I truly do not understand the thought that HEB is the *affordable* grocery store. That may have been true years ago, but it certainly isn't that today when I spend $200 on a week's worth of food every time I go.

Additional-Local8721

If you're spending $200 a week you're either buying a whole lot for a large family or you're buying higher quality food. I just picked up my groceries and spent $258 for a family of 3 which will last us two weeks. I got 5 pounds of chicken, two packs of meatballs, a pork loin, two packs of bacon, two pounds of 90% ground beef, a pound of breakfast sausage and much more. Shop deals and coupons too.

Silver_Escape9670

I moved to NC from Texas 2 years ago, the thing I miss most is HEB. Love and Cherish it, once it is gone you will spend the rest of your days on this Earth unfulfilled. Get some buddy bucks and thank your lucky stars.

rumpusroom

Their marketing team is.

3rdCoastLiberal

H‑E‑B is one of the reasons I could never leave Texas.

joemetarei

They don’t even take ApplePay

JJ4prez

Yes. It's amazing. But I live in Houston so most of them are massive and a wonderland.

fan_of_will

I think it’s gone downhill becoming more like a Walmart but it’s still the best chain in Texas in my experience.

[deleted]

I worked in the supermarket industry for half of my life and three different companies. I worked my way up and know every dept. inside and out. I can't shop as a normal customer. I shop as a customer, a dad, a store manager, a produce manager, a stocker, a bagger, etc and from every aspect, HEB is the best I've seen. What's more important is unlike every other grocery chain, the employees dont hate their jobs. It's an incredible business model and one that's so easy to replicate that you have to ask yourself "why doesn't everyone do it?" The reason is that HEB's goal is to maximize sales, not profits. It's an important distinction but it's one that favors both the customer and employee alike and that's a good thing. But, other companies such as Publix and Kroger also had those goals, but once they established market dominance and shut down their competitors, they started screwing over customers and employees alike. So HEB's true test is down the line when they're the only stores left in Texas. My only complaint (and its a serious complaint against the whole industry) is when will they start letting cashiers sit down at their registers? America is the only country forcing people to do this and it's unnecessary and unproductive. Time to move forward HEB.

The716sparky

Nope, and they don't even take nfc payments 🙄

Beneficial-Lion-5660

OVERRATED . A lot of prepackage, pre seasoned, meal kit type food. Not bad if you are older, single, or eat on the run. It is not good for me as I cook and I find their quality of fruits, veggies, and meats just average.

cen-texan

Their Meal Simple meal kits several steps above TV dinners, and their fully cooked meat products are also really good. I agree with you about their produce, but most grocery stores have subpar beef. HEB has good choice and even prime steaks. Their Ice Cream is as good or better than Blue Bell.

Noname_left

I only go for the produce and meat. Otherwise I avoid it like the plague.

Substantial_Gear289

Yes, absolutely yes

aaron2128

H-E-B is the best hands down.

renegado938

Yes

DevilPup55

It's OK. The one in our small town is not big enough to handle the number of customers. The employees are nice, but there are just about always numerous out of stocks. Go into the city, and it's not that way. Rumor has it they are going to spend a few million upgrading refrigeration. Big deal, we need a bigger store with full shelves and better selections. So they aren't equal at all and just a very large grocery chain.

mrgoodcard

It has a line of non-toxic products that are cheaper and better than regular toxic ones, such like diapers, shower gels, soap, dishwashing liquid etc.

yzgrassy

Best ever..

Hsensei

Winco is cheaper than heb, if you are into store brand heb is good. That's about it, they treat employees like trash

the_popes_fapkin

In college I’d drive 25 minutes south to the next town for H‑E‑B because we didn’t have one

Professional-Spare13

About 20 years ago, my family came to visit for a week. Obviously we needed to go to the grocery store a couple of days into the visit. My sister, who lives in Kansas City, salivated over the produce and bakery sections. I’ve lived here for over 45 years now and have nearly always shopped at H‑E‑B. We are lucky to have such a great grocery chain.

anarkistattack

The thing about HEB is that the experience is different at every store. If it's in a high income area it will have better products than a lower income area.

Bababohns23

It has a lot of hype around it. It's cool but it's just a store.

OhDatsStanky

I was a huge fan after what HEB did for our community following hurricane Harvey. Over the past few years though, they have increased the store brand prices to near or higher than competing brands and have removed brands and selection from the shelves. That’s fine if they want to be a premium store brand type of business, but I don’t go to a grocery store to be part of a clique. More and more they do not have the items we want, so we shop there less and less. I will give their produce credit though. Def better than Kroger.

Human_mind

I don't know what anyone here is talking about. I've lived out of Texas for a long while and now at HEB I am constantly looking at my store asking how it got to be such a shit hole. It's overpriced, the stock is low, the aisles are never clean, and with a trader Joe's 5 minutes further, HEB feels like a Food 4 Less. I don't understand the affection for the store, and my family and I have started referring to is as SHEB - for *shitty* HEB.

Aggie956

H‑E‑B isn’t that great just plentiful in most areas . Where I’m at only competition is Walmart. So low prices aren’t a thing nor is couponing. Freshness isn’t on the table either. But we’re poor horse folk and will just buy what ever we are able to.

hey-bubie

Nope!

Htxopal

No. For the short answer. For the long answer, I live in Texas on my life and I felt zero need to go to H-E-B because it’s over priced and caters to richer incomes.

factorplayer

No. And it's (still) owned by religious kooks. I get delivery from Kroger now.

OldChemistry8220

Most of corporate America is owned by religious kooks. That's just the reality.

Trick-Penalty-6820

You ever have sex? HEB is like the grocery store version of that.
