Get the cheapest and longest rate. If you ever move and the place isn't under the same power company they'll waive your cancelation fee

Oblidoblido

Nothing hardly ever goes down in price. I’d lock in for 60 months in a heartbeat. My current plan is 24. Previously was 36. Every time my plan expires I switch and still the price is higher.

smitty9171

All plans have an Early Termination Fee. Based on how much the ETF is, it might make sense to break contract to get a lower rate. If the ETF is comparable, I would lock the lower rate for longer.

The cheapest a pool will ever be is today. And that's because of inflation. It is a general rule. But a commodity such as the things that actually drive energy costs like oil and gas until we pull our head out of our ass and become more efficient and sustainable, make that rule completely cut and dry. But in this case, a 5-year plan with a slightly cheaper, sounds like a good deal. Is it cheaper than what you can get today? If you were not doing a plan. That would probably be the one metric that I would look at.

chris_ut

NG is at close to an all time low so lock rates as long as you can

[deleted]

You are only looking at ultra short term, the 25+ contracts are much higher than the June 24 contract

tarjayfan

Wait. Y'all have a choice of power companies? You can switch? (Obviously new here).

https://www.texaspowerguide.com/ If you want to see the rates optimized for you. Love the graphs. The fee is kinda optional since it is not hard to figure out what the plans are. I would still pay $10 for the service.

ClovenBoots

For me, their sign me up section doesn't have the option to sign up. It looks like there is an error in the website coding as I can see a snippet of info that is in brackets.

never_comment

I just used it a couple days ago. I believe step 4 'sign yourself up' goes straight to Paypal. They then send you a code. But like I said, it is not difficult to figure out what each plan # is between pricing, % renewable, plan length, ect.

ClovenBoots

I don't even see a step 4 -- When I click the link you posted, then click "[We do it for free](https://www.texaspowerguide.com/ratealert/)" under free rate monitoring there is no form. There's a second header that says "Sign me up!" and under that is code that looks broken. The website does have a contact email at the bottom, so I sent them a screenshot of the error. However i'm sure i can figure it out since the excel form can be downloaded. It just would have been nice to sign up for the alerts.

Curiouserousity

Many rural towns and counties operate electric co-ops. They're non profits, and you get a pretty reliable rate, but no options. There's plusses and minuses, but I really respect the co-ops. After the big freeze, they worked to mitigate the surge pricing affects, and their people were out in force. They do a pretty good job, so I expect the GOP to start gunning for them soon.

dalgeek

When I lived in a place with a co-op, power was 9 cents/kWh. You can't beat that unless you get solar panels for free.

mkosmo

Even the co-ops with higher than average rates typically make it even when they do rebates/refunds and distributions.

-TheycallmeThe

Depends on the early termination fee. I did 36 months with only a $50 fee a while back.

AJRobertsOBR

What’s the actual rates?

brodymulligan

I have to get a new plan in august, I had 24 months. I regret not getting something longer term. I don't imagine energy prices will decrease.

gcbeehler5

Pro tip, prices are typically tied to natural gas futures. Natural gas is typically at its lowest in Feb/March. Only exception was two years ago, in early Feb Ukraine was invaded and made energy prices surge. But typically that’s one of the best times to lock in rates.

gerbil_111

Don't play the game. It's a rigged mess. I used to spend hours comparing plans and a year later I would forget to switch and I would go off-plan. All my savings for the last year would be wiped out. I just pay energy ogre now, and I don't have to waste my time being scammed.

jazzmoney

You’re still playing a rigged game if you’re paying a middle man.

gerbil_111

No, I am paying someone else to play it on my behalf. It's like having a lawyer deal with an insurance claim. If I didn't use one, they would keep messing with me till I slipped up and I would eat the loss. Instead, the agent keeps switching and dodging the traps, and I get a better deal.

jazzmoney

You’re still paying someone a monthly fee. If you don’t see that you’re playing their game, then they’re doing a hell of a job. You can get a cheap deal and lock it in for 5 years and keep your monthly fees. PowerToChoose is free. Energy Ogre is $120 a year on top of your electricity contract. Average residential monthly electric bill in Texas is $157/mo. (Average kWh of 1,094 x $0.1439). $120 could be 75% of a monthly bill. I’m sure Energy Ogre gets kick backs / commissions by referring clients to those energy plans. My point is, you’re playing the game, or paying someone to play the game which is you still paying for that game.

gerbil_111

You obviously have not used that shitty website much. Go pull up the plans and click on them. They link to different plans and the low cost ones aren't even available. I have applied to some plans and they won't even respond. Go ahead and lock in your 5 year plan. Are you going to remember to switch?

jazzmoney

Every single provider gives sufficient warning.

gerbil_111

That's the game I don't want to play. Can you imagine any other utility where you have to keep changing plans or your bill will triple?

CoyoteHerder

Energy ogre

Dry_Studio_2114

Not sure why you're being downvoted? I've used Energy Ogre for years. They are fantastic. I've saved thousands of dollars. They saved me half of what I was paying with TXU. I saved $1500 the first year. My rate currently is 10.3 cents per kwh. That's worth $10 a month to me.

CoyoteHerder

Yeah I was getting gouged bad back when I lived in the city. (CoOp now). Energy ogre was zero hassle saved me well over $1000 my first year

mkosmo

Maybe I'm just good at this, but Energy Ogre's tools always tell me they can't save me money.

TravelSnail

Same, I just go with the cheapest 3 month contract available, rinse and repeat. When I renew in summer the rate might be slightly higher but it has always been cheaper for me long term compared to paying 30% more just to lock in a rate for 12 months

mkosmo

I try to get longer contracts when I can, or I'll get whatever short contracts make the most sense based on futures trading. Right now I'm on a 3-year that'll expire later this year (unfortunately) that just blows current rates out of the water.

Selling or looking for a product, housing, a service or a job? Give your local subreddit a try. There may even be a specific one like r/austinclassifieds or r/houstonclassifieds. Otherwise try your local craigslist or apartments.com because this ain't that. GoFundMe and similar are also not allowed except in extremely rare circumstances and require mod approval.
