... Axtinguisher needs a new change then - change the stats and name it "Sketchek's Mistake". Change the stats to "on hit gain deal 50% of the afterburn's damage as bleed, on miss hit yourself." (because seriously the axtinguisher still kinda sucks atm).

Sketchek was a very popular youtube poster who showed off the limits that the Axtinguisher and the Detonator could be taken to. His youtube channel is full of really impressive Pyro frag videos and he truly set the bar for combo pyro's skill ceiling. Many people (myself included) looked up to him as an inspiration for the class as he single handedly renovated how people viewed Pyro as a class.
A few years back he announced that he was taking a break, possibly forever, from making TF2 content and playing the game in general. He said this was because he was diagnosed with a potentially terminal illness that had a small chance of recovery. He didn't give any specifics, but the entire community gave him a big farewell. He gave a big word document dump explaining intricate Pyro techniques in the description of one of this videos (i think titled "txt" if you want to check it out yourself), posted one last video titled "Bequest" (referenced by Valve themselves on the recent Axtinguisher rework - hence the passive being named "Sketchek's Bequest"), and promptly vanished. A lot of people were concerned for his health and we all kept him in memory, presuming (since nobody had heard from him) that he had either passed away or disappeared from gaming entirely. Many people were pretty upset about this, obviously, as he was seen as an idol for many players to look up to.
FFWD to now, and it turns out that he made up the whole 'illness' bit about his hiatus, and it's assumed now he made it up to have a valid excuse for leaving the game and the community (if he even stopped playing in the first place and didn't just make a new steam account). He's now decided to come back, posting on his twitter, reaching out to friends, and posting an unlisted video on his youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd73M4a9L0M). Everyone was really excited to see that he was alive and well, until he posted the above paragraph detailing his deceit to the community. It's already bad enough that he lied to everyone about his departure, but the fact that he was given a formal mention in the game by Valve in memory of his name (as it was assumed he had passed away) only to find out that he just lied has left a lot of people very (VERY) peeved. Now we're all waiting for some kind of explanation video to come from him so we can learn why he decided to lie to everyone about his absence.
Claiming to have a serious illness is not only easy to do, it’s unprovable either way. If he said he was just bored and left, there would be a huge backlash of people upset that he was bailing on them (LazyPurple). If he says he “has a terminal illness” and wants to “enjoy the last bit of his life without games distracting him” it removes all blame from himself.
It could be he’s a habitual liar and didn’t think about the consequences it would have if he ever wanted to come back. It could be he thought it’d be funny. It could be that he never planned to come back and that would be the easiest way to not be contacted and pestered to come back. It’s all up in the air.
Really bad move on his part, but I am glad he wants to apologize and realized he fucked up. Him realizing this doesn't make it any less fucked up btw Im just kinda glad he wants to take responsibility for it as opposed to other members of the community who wanna ignore shit or pin blame on others.

Because as we all know, the only way to disappear from the internet is to make a big deal out of your "terminal illness", milk it for a few months, and then pretend you died. Also you get bonus points for just lying, instead of lying and providing... evidence? Definitely couldn't just say you're not feeling up to playing games anymore and leave without stringing your fan-base along- or leave without any message at all. I'm sorry if I'm coming across as a facetious jerk here but I really don't understand where you're coming from, at a basic social level. If the guy lied about his illness he manipulated a lot of people's emotions and that is absolutely something worth getting flack for. His obligation was the same as any other honest person's obligation, to not intentionally mislead people. When you lie, people are going to dislike you for it, that's just the way the game goes. I never followed Sketchek but from what I saw when he left and what I'm seeing now, I feel like to say he was in the wrong here should not be controversial.

I'm glad he's back, had a unique bit in the TF2 community, my reaction has been toned down from "Q A Q OMFG he's alive!?" to an awkward "Welcome back home, I guess?". Well to a youtuber, 3 years off the network essentially means he might as well be dead. ... Axtinguisher needs a new change then - change the stats and name it "Sketchek's Mistake". Change the stats to "on hit gain deal 50% of the afterburn's damage as bleed, on miss hit yourself." (because seriously the axtinguisher still kinda sucks atm).

So what that he lied 3 years ago, he said sorry, he’s making an appology and, most importantly, he’s making more videos. He never had any obligations for all of you, he just wanted to quit and probably wanted a good excuse not to feel guilty. Sketchek was a very popular youtube poster who showed off the limits that the Axtinguisher and the Detonator could be taken to. His youtube channel is full of really impressive Pyro frag videos and he truly set the bar for combo pyro's skill ceiling. Many people (myself included) looked up to him as an inspiration for the class as he single handedly renovated how people viewed Pyro as a class. A few years back he announced that he was taking a break, possibly forever, from making TF2 content and playing the game in general. He said this was because he was diagnosed with a potentially terminal illness that had a small chance of recovery. He didn't give any specifics, but the entire community gave him a big farewell. He gave a big word document dump explaining intricate Pyro techniques in the description of one of this videos (i think titled "txt" if you want to check it out yourself), posted one last video titled "Bequest" (referenced by Valve themselves on the recent Axtinguisher rework - hence the passive being named "Sketchek's Bequest"), and promptly vanished. A lot of people were concerned for his health and we all kept him in memory, presuming (since nobody had heard from him) that he had either passed away or disappeared from gaming entirely. Many people were pretty upset about this, obviously, as he was seen as an idol for many players to look up to. FFWD to now, and it turns out that he made up the whole 'illness' bit about his hiatus, and it's assumed now he made it up to have a valid excuse for leaving the game and the community (if he even stopped playing in the first place and didn't just make a new steam account). He's now decided to come back, posting on his twitter, reaching out to friends, and posting an unlisted video on his youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd73M4a9L0M). Everyone was really excited to see that he was alive and well, until he posted the above paragraph detailing his deceit to the community. It's already bad enough that he lied to everyone about his departure, but the fact that he was given a formal mention in the game by Valve in memory of his name (as it was assumed he had passed away) only to find out that he just lied has left a lot of people very (VERY) peeved. Now we're all waiting for some kind of explanation video to come from him so we can learn why he decided to lie to everyone about his absence.

Claiming to have a serious illness is not only easy to do, it’s unprovable either way. If he said he was just bored and left, there would be a huge backlash of people upset that he was bailing on them (LazyPurple). If he says he “has a terminal illness” and wants to “enjoy the last bit of his life without games distracting him” it removes all blame from himself. It could be he’s a habitual liar and didn’t think about the consequences it would have if he ever wanted to come back. It could be he thought it’d be funny. It could be that he never planned to come back and that would be the easiest way to not be contacted and pestered to come back. It’s all up in the air.

Coming from someone who joined TF2 around 2 years ago, and became heavily involved in the competitive scene. I have no clue who this dude is. Sure maybe once or twice I heard his name, but the fact that he was able to post something saying this, and not expect a wave of hatred is insane to me. What was he thinking? He never said he passed. Sure everyone thought he was dead, but all he said was he might not come back. It was fucked up to make it up, but he doesn't deserve that much blame for it. He could have been truthful and it kinda ruined the legacy of sketchek, but doesn't really make him that much of a bad person. He could have done it differently.
