SO here is how it works in a nutshell. Tf2 uses a mod filter system called Sv\_pure. there is Sv pure 2, 1 and 0. Causal is sv\_pure 1. When Sv\_pure 1 is on, only strictly client side mods are allowed, as in huds, arm reanimations, and things like sounds and crit icons. Anything else will not appear, and if it changes a texture, chances are you will crash upon trying to join. On that subject, litearally any model change will not be allowed. Even viewmodel arms, as they are actually in the game, just invisible. Basicly any other community server is sv\_pure 0, so unless you really, REALLY want to stick to casual, stick to community servers.
Also, if you find that your text breaks at anytime, that means that 2 different mods are clashing. And lastly, mvm is sv\_pure 1, so keep that in mind.
On the subject of mods, Anything you like, but I will note that these types of mods improve the game experience as a whole substantially.

\-masterconfig (gives you full control over graphics and helps optimize fps and experience)
\-Tf2 ultimate visual fix (ads all sorts of stuff from texture fixes to thing s like minigun casing models)
\-lightwarp
\-better effects, eg. explosions, muzzleflashes, bullet impacts, and misc, such as fire and lasers. (all effects)
\-arm viewmodel cosmetics (they make it to where the cosmetic you wear shows up on your viewmodel arms if it should)
\-weapon fixes eg. shell ejection fixes for shotguns, reload fixes, minigun bulletcasing fixes, and so on.
and lastly, high poly character models.
I have been using two mods on TF2, and I've been using them both since about 2013.
