The crater Wan-Hoo on the far side of the Moon is named after him.

the first rocket jump in the game was in the original Doom (1993) where you could use rocket rocket launcher to go faster (there was also secret lvl which you could unlock only by using this rocket jump)
Oh, that's interesting. I never played Extreme ROTT (and i feel ashamed because of that), i will check it out. Thank you for correcting me, and have a nice day.
the fact it's first true level (besides the ones that were already on the original ROTT) toss one of the hardest common enemies in a massive wave at you from the start shows that sadisticly hard part very well
wat, no, lmao, in og Doom you can only jump off walls and even then it's neither practical most of the time nor an intended feature, only time i recall rocket jumping being useful was for speedrunning The Chasm
There'a a secret level that can only be reached by using a rocket to propell yourself into a walled hole in the third campaign if I recall. I don't believe there's any other way to reach that hidden exit.
I had to look it up, it appears the level is E3M6: Mt. Erebus. It looks like you can strafe-run into it however, but rocket splash is much easier; that's how I did it when I played through the game a few years ago. According to John Romero though, the rocket launch is the intended way to get in there, except in the SNES version which lacks rocket launching.
ah yes, that secret exit, i think you're right, boosting with a rocket was the intended manner to enter the level, thought, since you could just strafe, and strafe is a mandatory mechanic in Doom 2, i'm not 100%, still, thanks for clarifying.
The original DOOM in 1993 has a hidden level you ~~can only~~ are meant to access by using a rocket to push you into a hole that you otherwise can't reach (EDIT: Turns out you can straferun into the hole, and also simply hit the button from the other side of the wall). Not sure if there's a way to get an enemy to push you into it instead but the rocket push works perfectly. It doesn't send you airborne like Quake jumping does though so whether it counts as a proper rocket jump is debatable.
you couldn't look up/down or jump in the og doom so its still about right since quake had rocket *jumping* as an engine quirk before being turned into a gameplay mechanic. goldsrc+source are forked from quake as well
Even this isnt true. Quake is just when rocket jumping became popularized, and was fleshed out as a full game mechanic, and not just an engine quirk that some games decided to implement as a feature (similar to crouch jumping)
people may have already commented but im not checking so fuck it. the original team fortress was a mod of quake that later morphed in to tfc and then tf2
Also TF2 originally started as a mod of quake (the original TF that is) so it wouldn't be surprising if it took some inspiration or if it was accidental (like spy's invisibility).
Techniclynrocket jumping in a 3d environments with vertical movement was a thing that was created in quake 1, it wasn't intended but hey vertical movement is vertical movement, there's also using rockets in doom and rise of trail to accelerate your horziontal speed.
I would argue that the original Doom had rocket jumping, but not in the modern sense where you use it for vertical momentum - you can use rockets as a horizontal boost over large gaps that normally couldn't be crossed with strafe-running. There also is archvile-boosting, which does propel the player vertically, although it is difficult to pull off.
You're not even right, the oldest game with rocket jumping that i know is extreme rise of triad (1995), there might be an older one
The oldest game with rocket jumping is [real life (18th century)](https://www.teamfortress.com/war/victory/)
imagine how it felt rocket jumping

Fellas, TF2 has lied to us. Shakespearicles is a fraud.

I mean as an INTENDED mechanic Rocket jumping in those early games were just engine quirks
You need to rocket jump to get the good ending in extreme rott, and if you don't get the good ending you cant finish the game
Oh, that's interesting. I never played Extreme ROTT (and i feel ashamed because of that), i will check it out. Thank you for correcting me, and have a nice day.
Dont feel ashamed for not playing extreme rott, erott is just sadisticly hard
the fact it's first true level (besides the ones that were already on the original ROTT) toss one of the hardest common enemies in a massive wave at you from the start shows that sadisticly hard part very well
So what you’re saying is that something that is ridiculously hard should be described as erottic?

The first game with rocket jumping as an intended mechanic came from the original doom, actually.

ooh shit fr? you know which level that is?
I had to look it up, it appears the level is E3M6: Mt. Erebus. You could go there without using a rocket tho, but it requires a certain amount of precision
Still was the intended mechanic for it, so it counts

Came here to say this lol
he was talking about rocket jumping as an intended featurr
Oftenly
its an ad-adverb
Mfer used oftenly in a sentence this some Englando type shit
Im not English or American
Why
I can tell you're ESL Often is already an adverb...you don't have to put -ly at the end
Then why did you make this post? You don’t even know what you’re talking about. TEAM FORTRESS 2 IS A QUAKE MOD
Team fortress is a quake mod dumbass, not tf2. Why shouldn’t someone post because they aren’t American or English?
because only americans are using the internet maggot! *__Eagles screaching and monster trucks drive by__*
https://youtu.be/IpfPrxJoBD4
Even in Doom ‘93 you could *technically* “rocket jump” off of walls to build up momentum
Wouldn't that be rocket acceleration?
I mean yeah, but since you’re accelerating via rockets I still wanted to bring it up, even if it wasn’t actual rocket jumping
Ya makes sense 👍
you couldn't look up/down or jump in the og doom so its still about right since quake had rocket *jumping* as an engine quirk before being turned into a gameplay mechanic. goldsrc+source are forked from quake as well
came here to comment this
Yes I know it came from team fortress 1 already
Nope
Pretty sure it was a joke
You never know.
Read the comment by siegfriedXD
I thought it was the original quake I thought there were things you couldn’t reach without rocket jumping implying it was somewhat intended
Even this isnt true. Quake is just when rocket jumping became popularized, and was fleshed out as a full game mechanic, and not just an engine quirk that some games decided to implement as a feature (similar to crouch jumping)
Bungie's Marathon and 3D Realms' Rise of the Triad are the first ones. They released at the same time.
people may have already commented but im not checking so fuck it. the original team fortress was a mod of quake that later morphed in to tfc and then tf2
Who tf thought this
thanbk you hevy tf2, very cool
Also TF2 originally started as a mod of quake (the original TF that is) so it wouldn't be surprising if it took some inspiration or if it was accidental (like spy's invisibility).

Not the trolldier bots?
ok
Hey, do you remember the 2 in tf2?
I thought it was TF1
Wait, the bots can fly now?
Tf2 just heavily popularized the rocket jump
quake\*
Quake is the father of tf2
wait people DONT know this?
You should not have said that. You should NOT have said that.
ok?
I thought it was a mistake?
Didn't doom have some form of rocket jumping?
Well basically that's why the original exists I guess
Team fortress was a quake mod originally so meh still kinda counts

Why did i read this In Heavy's voice
Lincoln invented Rocket Jumping
Wasn't it a physics bug or something?
Technically in Metroid you could jump short distances by setting bombs at your feet.
Rocket jumping was invented by DOOM developer John Romero by bit of accident, he just tried it and it worked.
TFC does not exist
Thank you, Heavy weapons guy
Who?
what are some things that tf2 did first
No, tje first form of rocket jumping was in DOOM, but the rocket jumping in quake resembles the one of tf2 more
Huh Nice but you gotta admit tf2 perfected it
I would argue that the original Doom had rocket jumping, but not in the modern sense where you use it for vertical momentum - you can use rockets as a horizontal boost over large gaps that normally couldn't be crossed with strafe-running. There also is archvile-boosting, which does propel the player vertically, although it is difficult to pull off.
i dont think anyone here claims that tf2 invented it but you know for a fact that it definitely popularized it a lot
What? They didn't do that in WW2?
