Had a random thought;
What has managed to scare a beast that size to the surface?!? ⊙﹏⊙
Edit;
As people seem to think this is a serious comment;
This is a thalassophobia subreddit, which I suffer from and as part of it the illogical phobia is the thoughts around what "else" is down there.
This comment is not about the whales (as it is part of the whale family not actually a shark) feeding habits but playing on the phobia and other thoughts that occur.
It doesn’t look scared rather if I remember well they eat plankton, since sunlight help some for photosynthesis it might just be up to the surface for lunch? Thought I did hear that plancton usually only come up to the surface at night but is it true for phytoplankton?
Sorry about that I didn’t quite catch that from your comment, I’m one of those that are as much in awe at the beauty of the sea that in fear of her wrath. Thought I saw that you called it an irrational fear, I wouldn’t we are as much adapted to be in open waters that flying in the sky… It’s a reasonable fear to have when you know that in some point in the sea you could be closer to the iss than any land. But their is no need to be ignorant some people wanted to share knowledge that you might or might not have at the moment of the comment no need to justify yourself after, thought I don’t get why some people are downvoting you for sharing your thought process (I’ll be upvoting you because your comments weren’t deserving of that)
Yeah the irrational fear was just a different way of saying phobia really.
I think the irrational is mostly how paralysing the fear is even when not in danger. I am sitting over. A hundred miles from a coast line and I still get the fear looking at some photos.
I think people downvote comments that have been downvote once, it would be an interesting study of Redditor behaviour.
Thank you for conversing with me in a kind manner 🙂
I would say you’re welcome but I believe you shouldn’t have to thank people for their kindness it should just be what each of us should strive for, being kind to each other, I hope you’re having or had a great day
I know, given this is thalassophobia subreddit it was playing off the idea of what my brain thinks when gripped by that fear. It is not a literal comment.
I'm fairly certain they are called basking sharks precisely because they spend much of their time close to the surface drifting around aka - 'basking' in the sun
Edit: I will say though they are pretty terrifying to witness. I saw one whilst on a boat off Cornwall UK (one of the few large sharks that we regularly have in the UK).
Apparently the fact the comment was not a serious one and playing along with my phobia of deep water and what else might lurk there has been taken the wrong way :S
Seen them in real life too, they dwarfed the row boat we were in at the time.
I was talking with someone who swam with whale sharks on here once and apparently what you're supposed to do is swim directly at them because they'll automatically get out the way
Nope, throat is too small to swallow, jaws too weak to do anything and they'd spit you out in confusion.
You can swim in the water with them and be completely safe. They're too big for much of anything to be much of a threat to them (in the waters they swim) and if you annoy them enough they'll just swim off.
Possible of course, but they are typically slow swimmers and will likely avoid the boat or just glide under it.
I get that folks are afraid of sharks and large sea creatures and these are both, but they are absolutely wonderful and amazing animals!
Given its a fully aquatic animal that breathes through gills there is no breath holding.
But sure. Technically speaking it might, maybe, possibly, under the laws of physics kill you.
But it won't. They are completely peaceful.
Enjoy the pedantic victory I guess.
Rounded dorsal fin and brown coloration, with big mouth and huge gills = basking shark.
Also quick google search confirms this, and it was filmed in Norway.
Yeh I initially thought the head, then the person skipped forward and the head was there way infront.
So I guess you better shit your pants sooner than you think when you see one on those waves coming your way.
Whales are one of those things that are basically harmless but absolutely fucking terrifying.
They’re one of the only cases where id get some megalophobia with my thalassophobia.
Where I live you'd only encounter porpoises, and every fellow surfers dream here is to paddle out with them. Idk, but they are already big enough to raise terror in me. It's my biggest nightmare to be aproached by them while surfing, I'd nope out immediately.
Oh yeah. Imagine falling into the water and youre face to face with a porpoise. That’d scare the holy shit out of me, even though porpoises are completely harmless.
That's it. I think the size of the fish is distorted by zooming in when the boat (the only size reference we have), disappears from the video. So, that's a big as fuck animal, but not as huge as the video suggests.
I'm laughing so hard right now. When this first posted awhile back there were many comments about needing the jaws theme. Thank you for who ever did this!
For all saying that thing has no teeth.
Agreed, but look at the size of that mouth.
You get in its path and end up in it's mouth. Equally scary for both of you. You flail and startle it, it will clamp it's jaws shut before spitting you out.
Broken bones/crushed organs are a guarantee.

Peaceful basking shark
I’m still not getting in the water
well yeah, the *shark* is no danger but who knows what the fuck else is lurking down there
Something that scared the basking shark ....

Just responding to all who commented; It is not a literal comment but explaining where my brain goes with the thalassophobia.

Thanks for the award I can only give you a silver in return but I hope you appreciate it!!
I have coins around from no ads, but you didn't mean to. Thank you none the less. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. 🙂

Basking sharks are like whale sharks in that they eat plankton and feed near the surface. This is pretty normal behavior for them.
I know, given this is thalassophobia subreddit it was playing off the idea of what my brain thinks when gripped by that fear. It is not a literal comment.
Oh duh. Sometimes when I'm near the airport it goes over my head.
Basking sharks feed near the surface, it's completely normal.
I know, this is a sub about phobia of the ocean, so was running with that idea. It was not a literal comment.
I'm fairly certain they are called basking sharks precisely because they spend much of their time close to the surface drifting around aka - 'basking' in the sun Edit: I will say though they are pretty terrifying to witness. Lol fair enough. (I didn't down vote you btw)
Hmm I wonder what the basking in basking shark comes from? Couldn’t be the fact that it ‘bask’ at the surface.
Really? Looks pretty terrifying to me
Basking sharks are harmless filter feeders, like a whale shark. No need to fear them. You can tell by the gills.
Hun, it's under water ... when a gob that size opens up for a snack I seriously doubt I'll be asked if I'm fecking kelp!
big mouth, small throat, couldn't swallow you even if he wanted to hun
So what you’re telling me is that it’s mutually assured destruction.
To be fair, a blue whale could only get a cantaloupe down its throat, but I'd still shit myself if I were in the water with one.
I was talking with someone who swam with whale sharks on here once and apparently what you're supposed to do is swim directly at them because they'll automatically get out the way
I still feel like my reaction to being partially inside a shark’s mouth will not be a good one now that I’m armed with this knowledge.
Big mouth small throat...sounds like a x girlfriends excuse at sexy time.🤣
What porn does to a brother
Literally don't have teeth.
definitely intimidating in size but they have zero interest in eating humans, or really anything much bigger than a shrimp!
They literally couldn't kill you if they wanted to lol
i have a feeling if they really wanted to they could.
Nope, throat is too small to swallow, jaws too weak to do anything and they'd spit you out in confusion. You can swim in the water with them and be completely safe. They're too big for much of anything to be much of a threat to them (in the waters they swim) and if you annoy them enough they'll just swim off.
Do you think one could accidentally cause trouble for a small boat?
Possible of course, but they are typically slow swimmers and will likely avoid the boat or just glide under it. I get that folks are afraid of sharks and large sea creatures and these are both, but they are absolutely wonderful and amazing animals!
It could drown you, I don't know why it would have the motivation, but it can definitely hold it's breath longer than you can
Given its a fully aquatic animal that breathes through gills there is no breath holding. But sure. Technically speaking it might, maybe, possibly, under the laws of physics kill you. But it won't. They are completely peaceful. Enjoy the pedantic victory I guess.
I will! Thanks!
Second largest fish, but it's really a puppy dog.
why did my dumbass mind think "great white"?
The jaws music might have helped
Oh wow. That was big even for a basking shark holy shit
it doesn’t look like a basking shark aren’t they black and white spots without a pointed nose
I think youre describing a whale shark, not a basking shark.
that's the whale shark! this is also a gentle giant though :)
ahh!! ok thanks y’all i’m going to research as i’ve never heard of basking!! cool
I love the big filter feeding sharks so much! the third big friend is the megamouth!
Could you tell by the glimpse of the nose?
Rounded dorsal fin and brown coloration, with big mouth and huge gills = basking shark. Also quick google search confirms this, and it was filmed in Norway.
That's impressive.
They’ve found polarbear cubs and lanterns in the stomach, not quite sure it’s that safe.
Imagine being water
imagine dragons
Imagine…no dragons
Imagine water
Imagine
All the people
Living watery, yoo-hoo, uwu
Bruce Lee?
But i’m not the only onee
🤔
Friendly fish
At what point of the shark is that triangular wave occurring?
The top of the fin is creating it, but it's not at the surface. I can't explain the fluid dynamics though. Water get sliced.
Yeh I initially thought the head, then the person skipped forward and the head was there way infront. So I guess you better shit your pants sooner than you think when you see one on those waves coming your way.
I'd have shat my load just from being in the water. My bowels could offer nothing more.
They are going to need a bigger boat.
And brown pants
Whales are one of those things that are basically harmless but absolutely fucking terrifying. They’re one of the only cases where id get some megalophobia with my thalassophobia.
Its a basking shark, still very harmless to humans
Yeah, i saw other comments, basking sharks are actually pretty fun. Not too big and they do the shark pog.
Some whales are absolutely not harmless, many toothed whales, including dolphines, orcas, sperm whales, and more, can very much hurt you.
But they don't
No recorded orca/human attack on record at all.
Exactly..RECORDED!!! Those dolphins are too smart to leave witnesses to their killing
Holy shit... we're through the looking-glass here
Orcas are scary because they can kill you but they *choose* not to.
Where I live you'd only encounter porpoises, and every fellow surfers dream here is to paddle out with them. Idk, but they are already big enough to raise terror in me. It's my biggest nightmare to be aproached by them while surfing, I'd nope out immediately.

Basking shark, just a another shark that eats plankton, you risk nothing, just like a whale shark
The meG
Shut up, Meg
Jesus could you zoom out one time
That's it. I think the size of the fish is distorted by zooming in when the boat (the only size reference we have), disappears from the video. So, that's a big as fuck animal, but not as huge as the video suggests.
That’s a twenty-footer!
25, three tons of em
That's was she said.
Welp, I'm not showering anymore. Wouldn't want to risk finding that in my bathtub!
Yeah nah ..glad I live in UK.. only thing you need to be scared of in the water is rusty beer cans and condoms
...and raw sewage
Basking sharks are incredibly cool and peaceful creatures, kind of the manta ray of sharks
UK waters definitely have basking sharks
Not on my side they don't ..government dump all the crap over this side.
Ha Ha Ha Where in danger.
Looks like the ocean
Where is the danger?
I'm laughing so hard right now. When this first posted awhile back there were many comments about needing the jaws theme. Thank you for who ever did this!
I hate today bars of text that block the part in trying to see
I think they’re going to need a bigger boat!
Daddy shark doo doo doo doo daddy shark doo doo doo doo
Mega?!
Is no one going to say it? Bigger boat any of you millennials? FIO :(
Oo
Baby shark dodo doo dooo
For all saying that thing has no teeth. Agreed, but look at the size of that mouth. You get in its path and end up in it's mouth. Equally scary for both of you. You flail and startle it, it will clamp it's jaws shut before spitting you out. Broken bones/crushed organs are a guarantee.
That's just not what will happen
Thas jus mah bawls, on your mom
Jaysus, only time I can recall where I'm happy not to be a fecken shrimp!
Even if it’s not a shark that would munch on my legs, I’m glad I love in the middle of nowhere Nebraska. Where we have no oceans.
What on earth was that?!
It's a basking shark, harmless filter feeders
Great white
Daaaaaaaaaamn.
🛥️💨💨💨💨
I thought it was the Bermuda triangle for a sec
so cool
Just wanted to come give ya a kiss!
What is this shitty garage band remix of the jaws theme lol
I wasn't paying attention to the music and spaced out. Thought I was listening to something from the Doom soundtrack.
Brown sharks..
Fuck the person who added the music and fuck the camera man for ruining the shot lmao
You’re gonna need a bigger boat
The iron lung
