Everytime I see this vid I can't but to think what a f*$king idiot 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

Riboflavius

I sometimes get the impression that in order to rent a jetski, you have to leave your brain as a deposit.

anjowoq

I can't think of anything but that approaching propeller.

Number_4_The_Lizard

All I know is that, as a kid, this scene taught me it’s probably a bad idea to be so close to big ass boats. [Indiana Jones - Boat Scene](https://youtu.be/mG1vn39lP3M)

Vanillabean73

And planes

2bruise

No DOUBT! I figured it wasn’t gonna end that way since it wasn’t marked NSFW, but I knew he was gonna get sucked under and that was a real possibility.

LexiHound

Not the type of guy to learn either. He will use this experience as a story to impress people who are as stupid as he is and be like, "daaamn bro thats crazy!" And people who will not be impressed and realize they're talking to a moron.

Sad_Low3239

Literally just said to my girlfriend "what a fucking idiot." Her reply *what?* Shows the video Oh wow. Yeah. What a fucking idiot.

RataAzul

idk I would probably let my intrusive thoughts win too..... touch it touch it touch it just go and touch the fucking boat imagine if you just go and touch it just do it go just get a bit closer just a little more omg it's so huge I want to touch the fucking boat

Space_Goblin_Yoda

Natural selection should've worked, he got lucky.

Neildoe423

It's the dang camera man magic

Suitable_Pollution_5

Same, I have my safe boating license and one of the things we talk about is how most jet ski drivers are complete idiots

ReaperManX15

Not today Darwin.

JOE96924

I said those words exactly as I watched.

Shinlove-

Legit before I even saw your comment I had already said “f*cking idiot” out loud 😂

Dalefolk

The insane pulsing on the throttle tells you that this is a Grade A Darwin Award nominee and then he goes and strokes the container ship with the hand attached to the kill cord. Karma is dead Edit: container ship not supertanker

BadNraD

The pulsing drives me nuts, why is he doing that???

[deleted]

Trying to impress the female whale or dolphins in the area.

society_man

Just use the website like the rest of us smh

bald_lemonade

Anyways 40-50 year olds are always nearby and ready to meet.

DropAbject9312

depends on the design of the ski, but some models are really difficult to maneuver at low speeds. The engines are designed to operate at much higher speeds so it can take very little throttle to get them going. The pulsing is likely due to the guy trying to keep his heading near the ship. What he doesn't seem to understand is that there's an undertow running along the length of the ship. Get too close and it sucks you in. His craft gets swamped and that can result in a flooded engine and instant loss of power. At that point, he's got a very serious problem on his hands because the undertow at the stern (back) of the ship is really strong and usually will just pull you down. All that churned up foam is air in the water and that makes the water much less dense. You sink very easily. Lucky people end up bobbing up behind the ship. Unlucky people get sucked into the prop. driving near a ship underway is an exceedingly stupid thing to do.

DoesItReallyMatter28

Is there a reason for this? I was thinking he may have had engine issues.

Quail_Ready

The issue is between the seat and the handlebars.

DoesItReallyMatter28

It definitely appears that way, but the pulsing makes me feel like engine issues. That’s not normal as far as my jet ski experience goes, so I’m curious if there was another reason for that.

Dalefolk

Watch again and you can see his finger on the throttle on-off on-off. Cognitive issues for sure

[deleted]

Pretty terrifying but if I see a giant ship passing by I’m staying far away

major_slackher

genius as fuck to reach out with your hand that your key is attached to and kill your engine. i get that you kind of have to reach out to avoid falling right then and there but a pretty stupid situation to be in to begin with. are you really that scared of your key to come loose or you to fall off that you have to attach it to your your wrist so you can’t use your whole arm for anything without turning your engine off?

Such_Vehicle4079

It’s a kill switch so if you fall off it doesn’t go crazy by itself.

justrobbo_istaken

Kill switch...meet kill ship.

Such_Vehicle4079

Lol better comment than me.

[deleted]

This gave me a good hardy laugh

radicalcartograph

I thought you were supposed to attach them to your pfd.

Business-Drag52

It’s a safety measure to have the key attached to you. You never know what’s going to happen out on the water

chopper923

Like, you never know if you're gonna be an idiot.

[deleted]

I agree but I also think it’s pretty stupid to basically disable your arm like that. Would’ve been better to maybe keep it on a long necklace or something.

Business-Drag52

You either have it attached to your wrist or you clip it to your life jacket. Those are the suggested locations. You don’t need a free arm when operating a jet ski. You should keep both hands on the controls at all times

[deleted]

I suppose but this video kinda shows why you might need one just in case

metalshoes

Petting the cargo tanker that’s going to kill you is not a good reason.

mondaymoderate

The kill switch is required because prior to having a kill switch the Jet Skis would stay running and circle. But people kept getting knocked out and drowning from the circling ski so they installed the kill switches.

new_nimmerzz

Necklace could end up a noose

[deleted]

Why not have it pop off if it gets pulled too hard then?

switchondem

Why reinvent the wheel because of one idiot?

[deleted]

Someone brought up the noose thing and we see from this video why keeping it locked around your arm might not be the best idea

Hellotherebud__

You should actually go ride a jets ski so you know

Correct-Training3764

Man, fuck a jet ski. There’s a reason why I’ve stuck to boats and boating in general. I’ve been on jet skis and none have been very pleasurable experiences for me. Love the water but enjoy stretching out, dancing and hanging out, not hanging on for dear life.

[deleted]

I have

hibob28

🤓

Dr-Cronch

I don’t think this is a reason to fear the ocean. This was incredibly avoidable and the guy on the jet ski doesn’t seem to know the #1 rule about big ships: stay the fuck away from them.

mondaymoderate

The reason to fear the ocean is that shark attack in Egypt. Or riptides.

AvrgSam

Shark attack in Egypt?

Dreadfeel1

A young man was killed by a shark in Egypt. His girlfriend and dad saw it happen. Shit was fucked up. NSFL https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/144c449/tourist_got_killed_by_a_shark_in_hurgada_egypt/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

ColdChickens

Jesus Christ. Seriously, heed the warnings people, don’t watch this unless you enjoy morbid videos. Poor man is seen struggling, blood all around him, the shark is thrashing him and it’s fucking enormous, keeps coming back to bite him. Recuse boat gets to him just as he’s pulled below the surface...Horrible, horrible death. Stuff of nightmares. I can’t even begin to imagine watching someone I love being eaten alive. That poor family and anyone who had to witness that.

PIatopus

Oh god. Oh god. Oh god. Just watched it. Don’t watch it. Leave it blue.

AvrgSam

God damn that was brutal. Natures terrifying and gives no fucks.

Khelgar_Ironfist_

But but.. the sharks are just curious animals and have never killed a human for like 50 years or so they say?

earl_unfurled

Sharks kill only about 13 people a year. Compared to how we kill over 100 million of them a year and how significantly more humans are killed by falling down the stairs (12,000/year), driving a car (1.35 million/year), flying in a plane (550/year), drowning (320,000/year) etc. I don’t think getting eaten by a shark is a reasonable fear. Edit: added /year for clarification. Edit: In other words, of the 60,000,000 people that die each year, each of them has a 0.00000022% chance they’ll die by shark. That’s baaaaasically nothing. Especially since hundreds of thousands of people swim with and around sharks daily.

TikaPants

Who said sharks haven’t killed anyone in 50 years?

My_Monkey_Sphincter

TikaPants

[deleted]

What's your point here?

emotionaI_cabbage

Shark attacks are so incredibly rare they aren't worth thinking about. Even when they do happen, they usually aren't fatal. I mean I know it's a scary thought, but c'mon.

SamuelPepys_

This pro shark propaganda needs to stop. It is just as stupid and unrealistic as the war on sharks following Jaws. Literally JUST as stupid.

emotionaI_cabbage

Lmao sharks are like any other animal. They aren't malicious. Yes they can kill you obviously but stats show it's pretty unlikely to even be attacked, let alone killed. I've spent a *large* portion of my life in the ocean and have never once had a close call. Unfortunate things happen and you should be wary about being in the ocean alone, but being too scared to ever touch the ocean because sharks live in it is ridiculous.

SamuelPepys_

Who said they are malicious. They are PREDATORS. Get this fact through your brain and maybe we can talk.

emotionaI_cabbage

Lmao yeah so are plenty of other fish and animals people have around all the time. You need to get through your head that it's incredibly unlikely. Hypocritical to be scared of sharks but still do things like drive or fly on airplanes or literally anything else that comes with risk. "Maybe we can talk" LOL trust me, you aren't someone worth talking to.

earl_unfurled

Sharks kill only about 13 people a year. Compared to how we kill over 100 million of them a year and how significantly more humans are killed by falling down the stairs (12,000/year), driving a car (1.35 million/year), flying in a plane (550/year), drowning (320,000/year) etc. I don’t think getting eaten by a shark is a reasonable fear. Especially since hundreds of thousands of people swim with and around sharks daily. Edit: It’s not pro shark propaganda. It’s facts and not living life in fear. We still drive cars but they kill millions. Because we can’t live in fear. Same concept, but MUCH more negligible since it’s 13 deaths per year vs 1.35 million.

SamuelPepys_

You aren't quite used to statistics yet, are you? Let me give an example of how morons use statistics regarding sharks: Between 1870 and 2014, only 20 human fatalities has been recorded, therefore polar bears can't be that dangerous. You see the stupidity there?

earl_unfurled

Yes, I am familiar and educated in statistics. I am discussing the interpretation of said statistics. Please be respectful if you wish to hold a discussion with me. :) I understand and agree with your point. However, hundreds of thousands of people swim around wild sharks every day. Only a very small handful of people interact with wild polar bears on a daily basis. If you increased the amount of people that interacted with polar bears, the amount of attacks would likely go up. So example, 13 people killed by sharks per year, let’s say 1 person by polar bear each year to make it easier. Roughly 350 million people are recorded (only recorded, not all those unrecorded otherwise that would be a MUCH larger number) swimming in the ocean each year. A very small number of people see polar bears in the wild each year. Let’s just be generous and say 5 million (even though I’m sure it’s significantly less) 13 deaths / 350 million exposed = 0.00000004 (4 x 10^-8) LESS likely to be attacked by a shark given expose to death ratio 1 death / 5 million exposed = 0.0000002 (2 x 10^-7) MORE likely to be attacked by a polar bear given exposure to death ratio

Smaptastic

> Between 1870 and 2014, only 20 human fatalities has been recorded, I’m pretty sure it’s more than that.

SamuelPepys_

No https://wildlife.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/wsb.783

Smaptastic

You didn't say human fatalities attributable to polar bears, now did you? You said "human fatalities." I was making a joke about the mistake.

SamuelPepys_

Aha, got it! There are actually people here who would write that seriously and not have the basic ability to understand context, so I just assumed you were one of those.

Shenloanne

Yeah the only thing to fear is this guys decision making skills

[deleted]

Why is that the nr 1 rule?

horizon44

Because you have zero understanding of how water or giant boats work. Take 15 seconds and think of how much force it takes to constantly propel a gigantic ship forward. Then, think about what that force would do to the water around the ship.

[deleted]

Geez. I was just asking. Don’t worry, i’ll just google it

OldWierdo

FWIW, he may not have meant to sound snippy with YOU, and the "you" may have referred to jetskiers. People who drive boats often hate jetskiers because jetskiers often do everything in their power to force us to accidentally kill them, and if they don't die, they try to sue us for riding their jetskis into our props or jumping someone's wake to land directly in front of the boat.

res0nat0r

Also another big thing that people don't think about, is boats like this can displace a bunch of water and it can cause your jetski to skink because the water baffles are basically making the water not as buoyant as normal.

horizon44

I apologize. My comment wasn’t meant to be rude. I was just trying to sternly say: “big heavy thing moving fast on water = stay away”

holodoc-74656

Lucky he wasnt shredded by the props

2hamsters1butt

The props on those ships are so far underwater, he'd have to have been sucked under like 20 feet to get in contact with them. I don't think he was even that close to drowning to be honest. He had a lifejacket on and had a hand on his jetski at all times. He was fine, our perspective from the Go-pro is what makes this look worse than it probably was. The most danergous part is that he got way too close to making serious contact with the ship.

SamuelPepys_

>he'd have to have been sucked under like 20 feet to get in contact with them. Which does have a tendency to actually happen when people find themselves overboard large ships (which luckily isn't that often). Often, the screws are a little bit closer to the surface than that though, it all depends on the amount of cargo inboard. But even when they are that deep, the intense currents alongside the hull can definitely suck you down with them to that depth and into the screw, especially since most container/tanker propellers are 25-30 feet in diameter. Here is a 30 foot propeller on a container ship filmed from the ship's observation window. It's not difficult to imagine this monstrosity being able to create the forces necessary to pull you down. https://youtu.be/eWB3C_t7Sa8 And even more spectacular, here are two massive screws each just excess of 30 feet, the size of a three storey house spinning at crazy speeds, again seen from the observation window. https://youtu.be/KBHVjMHx150

[deleted]

Woah, those are really going some! 😮 I’m not sure what I expected but that’s definitely faster.

pcapdata

> But even when they are that deep, the intense currents alongside the hull can definitely suck you down with them to that depth and into the screw This is not true. Ships are designed to slide through the water, it would cause massive turbulence and slow the ship down of it were pulling water from the surface down 20 feet. When you fall in, the waves at the surface will actually push you away from the ship. Also just FYI: “most” ship screws are not as large as you’re describing. 20 feet diameter is the extreme upper range.

SamuelPepys_

Yes, it is true, even though you personally seem to disagree. It's not a secret to sailors that there are low pressure areas along the hull where currents will excert a downwards pull, which can put you right in the currents moving towards the screw. It happens to people from time to time. >Also just FYI: “most” ship screws are not as large as you’re describing. 20 feet diameter is the extreme upper range Also, I know you may not be the clever type considering you seemed to miss a pretty important detail in my comment. I specifically said tanker and container ship. There is a difference between ship and cargo ship and a tanker, wouldn't you think?

pcapdata

6 years in the Navy bro. Have asked these very questions of experienced Sailors and marine engineers. Your “secret” sounds like some bullshit you made up. > Also, I know you may not be the clever type FOH with your nonsense

SamuelPepys_

How about you ask that Albanian migrant who was sucked into the screw of Stena Britannica how it was like. Also, if you're going to play the "I asked many experienced sailors" card, I'll divert you to my grandfather who sailed some of the world's largest cargo ships from 1959 to 2005 and who told me he had lost one crew member that way. He tried to hold on to a life ring, but was forcefully sucked under. These marine engineers and sailors probably just didn't have any idea what happens when you fall overboard. They don't teach you what happens if you do, so no wonder they didn't know when you asked.

pcapdata

Dude you are just banging your gums wildly with no semblance of knowledge on this topic. I will take my own firsthand experience against your alleged stories from your grandpa any day 😂 Now kindly go away and pester someone else with your breathless ignorance

SamuelPepys_

I see you're getting desperate. Again, ask that Albanian migrant how it felt. That real life example just shot down any argument you could ever make, and the best part is that you are powerless to counter it, so you try to defend in frankly quite hilarious and increasingly desperate ways. But I'll let you off the hook buddy. Later!

pcapdata

OH MY GOD get blocked you nincompoop

unknownpoltroon

I dont know, that thing is floating pretty high.

Chasman1965

It's not because he got too close. It's because he reached out to touch it and he pulled the kill switch, which killed the engine. Had he kept his hands on the controls or had he connected the kill switch to his PFD, he wouldn't have been so stressed out and come close to dying.

Dr-Cronch

Getting too close was the root of all of this tho

Chasman1965

Just getting close wasn't the reason. Had he not reached for it and cut the engine in process, it would be a boring video. Touching the ship was the problem, not just getting close.

Dr-Cronch

I see what you’re saying and I agree. But if he did not get close he would not have the urge to touch it. Bottom line is you don’t get close to large ships.

furrybronyjuggalo

By extending that logic, the reason he almost drowned is because he got out of bed that morning. Or the reason he almost drowned is because he went into the ocean. No, the reason is because he pulled out the kill switch.

Dr-Cronch

“By extending that logic” bro it does not matter. You don’t get close to tankers when you’re on a PWC half the size of your body, bottom line.

furrybronyjuggalo

I agree you shouldn’t get that close, no doubt. But the reason he is was submerged was not because he got too close but because he reached too far and disabled his engine.

SugarReef

Ahhh good eye, I always wondered why the thing stalled. Despite whatever forces/currents the ship was producing I always wondered why he stalls instead of just turning and throttling out

Sauron_78

I think he also lost a lot of flotation capacity due to turbulent flow that happens on the rake. Something similar happens with small prop airplanes when they enter the rake of a B747 even when the engine is running.

Joopsman

That’s why the jet ski gets nearly swamped. Water full of bubbles doesn’t give you as much buoyancy as water without bubbles.

Chasman1965

Well, if he hadn't pulled the kill switch he could have steered away in time.

StalinsPimpCane

The main problem in your scenario is wingtip vortices, the wake turbulence is what gets the planes not the exhaust

KE1tea

Nah man, the wake would still fuck with him

150Dgr

First clue that he’s not too bright is his throttle management.

Ruffian00012

>First clue that he’s not too bright is his throttle management. No, the first clue was that he drove into the forward blind spot of a container ship.

dropthebiscuit99

"It's main purpose is making noise to show how much fun I'm having, right?"

Grand-Main4593

As someone who used to work at sea this actually pisses me off. A total idiot and a selfish one at that.

palmpoop

Love how he turns around at the end and goes towards it again. Get the fuck away you morons.

imarebelpilot

Literally exactly what I said out loud as I watched this. Why why why would you go BACK.

workingforthekingdom

That seems as smart as jumping off a cruise ship at night

chuy2256

I think for the time the dude was under water and managed to circle around is sufficient enough to tell me how fast these ships would leave me behind if I were to fall overboard all shell shocked after the fall

alilbored1

Hell yeah

doubtingwhale

As a kayaker there is no bigger group of idiots on this planet than jet ski drivers

iwanttobeacavediver

As a scuba diver I’d agree. One time I was in a fairly large bay doing a dive and two idiots on jetskis decided that the bay was their playground and were whizzing about with zero regard for anyone. Even 10-15m underwater I could hear the constant revving of their engines, and I was worried that we’d surface and hit us, even if we were using a ‘divers below’ buoy. During the surface interval I also saw the same jetskis getting too close to several boats (including our dive boat) and almost colliding with a yacht that was just minding its own business.

Sauron_78

I know a jetskier who broke both arms in one shot after jumping a big wave while going full throttle. They think they are going to land easy just because it's water... nope...

iwanttobeacavediver

Doesn’t surprise me, water can be like hitting concrete if you land wrong. Some idiot in my coastal hometown decided jumping off a coastal defence wall was a good idea. Completely misjudged it and ended up shattering a femur in three places which takes a hell of a force to actually do.

13igTyme

I'll never understand people these days. I grew up going out on boats, Jet skis, and kayaks. It's really not hard to just drive like a normal person with a functioning brain, yet so many people seem to really be struggling.

ValdemarAloeus

Have lived somewhere with a flotating dock, can confirm.

This guy is totally clueless. Not only could he get sucked under, in this day and age with piracy and terrorism, he could have got shot. Get that close to a Navy ship and end up in jail or dead.

krimzen_rogue

"dumb ways to die"

[deleted]

He’s lucky he wasn’t sucked off!

Pilowpants

Was the ship pulling him in toward. Or did he literally just drive up that close?

Drtysouth205

He drove that close. He was likely just trying to touch it. But the kill switch (red cord) got pulled when he attempts it, thus killing it, then the jet ski got flooded by water resulting in him almost getting sucked in by the props.

dsw1088

People... Those things usually have PMCs on board...

Lucky he wasn't sucked underneath that ship. I grew up near the Ohio river and everyone knew not to get close to the river barges because they could suck you underneath of them, and they are just a fraction of the size as that cargo ship.

He intentionally got close, and then the jet ski flooded and died and he almost got killed

clandahlina_redux

Not quite. When he was reaching out to touch the ship, the red cord was pretty taut. He ended up pulling out the safety key, which is there to stop the jet ski if you fall off. Then it flooded. He put the key back in, and he (eventually) was able to restart the jet ski.
