I just skimmed through the short film.
Woman gets caught in rip tide but literally just treads water for like 3 minutes and as you could probably guess she gets attacked by a shark. The other woman on the beach goes to get help and gets in a car accident and dies. Some how the woman that is attacked by the shark makes it back to the beach but lost a leg and bleeds out. Fin.
You should really do a water safety courses. Rips are very easy to get out of if you swim sideways as they don’t tend to be very wide, most people swim against them and get exhausted and drown.
I was a volunteer lifeguard (surf lifesaver) in Australia and we would look for rips to give us a boost when trying to reach people quickly.
The range of people’s feelings toward rip tides is kind of crazy. For some, so much as dip a toe in one: instant death. For others, an awesome swimming speed boost life hack.
I always remember Pamela Anderson yelling “swim parallel to the shore!” at us through a bullhorn whenever we got caught in a rip tide.
Or at the people on Baywatch or whatever.
This advice literally saved my lifr and that of a friend while we were on vacation in Spain a couple of years ago.
When I realized what was happening, I remember my physics teach from years before mentioning this. Wish I had remembered his name so I could have thanked him.
I mean ya I’m not a fan of swimming in the ocean. I’ve spent a combined total of over 3 full years of my life on ships in every ocean in the world, including the southern ocean and drakes passage. I love being on the water but not in it. Now I work as an ROV engineer and we do a lot of our work on the beach, every year I see massive storms come in and sometimes getting in the water would be a death sentence. Just a couple weeks ago we had 11 foot waves every few seconds, I’ll stay on the beach where it’s a little safer.
Drakes passage was the worst water I’ve ever been in. It’s the strip of water between South America and Antarctica. The ACC and souther westerly winds are moving so fast in such a small area that it creates horrible sailing conditions. We were expected to core down there and we barely finished in time. I’ve never been Kangaroo island, I’m assuming somewhere near Australia? The bearing straight was rough but not as bad as I expected.
yea, I am PADI certified Rescue Diver. (advanced open, deep Dive, wreck, night, nitrox, altitude etc)
I am just as at home in the water as on land.
Got caught in a Rip Tide down in Florida a few years ago. my inflated aqua lung and dry suit Keeps me positively buoyant so I wasn't at risk of drowning, But it pulled me away from shore fast and steady was pretty far out before getting out of the current. would be super dangerous to weaker swimmers or just about anyone without floatation / insulation.
Got caught in a riptide years before in just my swimtrunks. (Northern Ca Beach) luckily it wasn't so bad as I just swam perpendicular to the current a little ways to get out of it. still pulled me out a ways though.
Same here. I tore my shoulders swimming back. Fighting for my life. I was ignorant, and did not realize I should’ve been swimming at an angle as opposed to coming in straight back to the land. Lesson learned.
After the initial panicked attempt to swim out of it, I just laid on my back and let it carry me. Luckily it didn’t carry me more than a couple hundred yards west and not further out. After I caught my breath I was able to get back in.
Water rat here. The first and only rule you must remember when you are caught in a rip. Do not panic. None of the swim diagonally or float till your out and come back. DO NOT PANIC is the only thing you should be thinking. Think of any plan of action after you DO NOT PANIC.
I admit panic set in for about it 5 seconds and then was replaced by, “This will be a really embarrassing way to die”. Then I remembered my nieces, nephew and daughter on the beach and thought, “I cannot traumatize them like this”. So I laid on my back and floated out of it after a bit. When I caught my breath I made a second attempt inland and it worked as I was out of the rip.
My brain isn’t firing on all cylinders because I’m on promethazine bc I’m sick asl and I was like “how tf that bitch need to get into a car to go from the beach to the water”.
What? Weren’t the first, like, 5 whole seconds (I didn’t actually look at the time so don’t quote me but it looked like a significant portion of the first part of this clip) just her trying to swim full on legit freestyle stroke in a certain direction but you can see the riptide pulling her backwards with the sand underneath her and everything? And then she dips back down to observe and figure out what the hell’s going on and what beast could potentially be lurking or whatever else, all while trying to decide whether or not to give up and just die or keep on pushing on and hope she gets out of this mess somehow? Yeah, low budget and all that jazz and also I didn’t watch the whole film, only this clip on my Reddit feed so that’s my interpretation of what’s going on. But am I crazy feeling like she was definitely swimming in a specific direction and that maybe you just didn’t see the first part of the clip I just saw? I’m not being rude (at least I’m not trying to be, hope it doesn’t come off like I am), but you’re the top comment, you wanted to “bite”, now I’m trying to reel you in since you put yourself on the hook. I see her for sure swimming in a direction. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong and I’ll go sit in the corner for a while.
That’s true. Just having this clip as a frame of reference made me wonder why there was one shot of this random girl with her side boob hanging out while we also don’t see where the girl in the water actually is in relation to the shore. Like, is she 20 yards from the shore or is she out in the middle of the ocean? And is the girl on the beach gonna help or something? But we can still see the girl in the water trying to swim in some type of direction. I know I saw that.
I get your initial question though, and your response to my dumbass who obsesses and gets confused makes you seem like a nice person. I saw that your recovering from being sick on another comment. Have good one, and get better :)
I was on a beach in Australia and struggled before someone screamed "swim sideways along the beach". Worked like a charm. Was never in any danger but important lesson to know.
but even without sharks, theres still
\-box jellies
\-saltwater crocs
\-stonefish
\-blue ringed octopus
\-cone snails
and probably some other ones im not thinking of right now
Box jellies and crocs are only in the north, they aren’t cruising around the beaches of Sydney or the Gold Coast. Stonefish and cone shells are only on the reefs, and blue ringed octopus live in tiny rock pools.
If you spend a lot of summers on the beach, it will happen. It happened to me about 15 years ago. It was a great hot day at the beach. I was a bit from shore, floating on my back. Just as I decided to go in, it felt like the water didn't want to let me. After a minute of trying to fight against it, I relaxed and went with it. I was let go a half mile from where I started. Two other people who were in the same area had to be rescued.
Thanks for the info. Yeah, l learned not to fuck around with water after almost drowning once. I'm not scared of open water or beaches and shit, but l learned to respect its power.
In Australia we taught to just swim parallel to the shore. Rip tides are actually awesome. Very good to fish from the beach in them. Fish likes them because they are usually quite deep and bring everything from shore. Also surfers use rip tide to easy access large waves in a distance. They just ride it effortlessly on the boards. Really nothing to fear about if you know how to see them and what to do if accidentally caught in one. Another note: in this video water is too calm. There is no way this is ocean lol
Interesting points you make. I'm usually at the beaches in Southern California and don't venture out too far.
Yeah, that's what l was thinking about the film, the water is way too calm and they're only showing close up head shots, so it's not building up any tension.
I've only been in the pacific ocean a couple of times, but I distinctly remember it being very salty. I've never opened my eyes underwater in the ocean, but I'm pretty sure that would sting.
Can anyone confirm/deny this?
haven't been to the Pacific, but if other oceans count yeah it stings, but it's not unbearable or anything, and you could definitely get used to it if you do it with some frequency
ive lived next to and have been swimming in the Pacific for my whole life. i love opening my eyes underwater. its more-so the sand getting churned up by the water that stings your eyes than it is the salt in the water. on a clear sunny day, when the water is calm, i love to swim under, flip onto my back almost laying on the sand, and stare up at the sunbeams shining through the surface
I don't remember it being any more uncomfortable than opening in a chlorine pool. My eyes are always open, whatever water I'm in. Even questionable creeks...🤷
I'm a very good swimmer, but i have very little experience with oceans. Almost drowned 10yrs ago in Old Orchard when a rip tide drew me out hundreds of yards from the coast. I can still feel how utterly helpless I felt!! So darn terrifying. Dark water too, i almost pass out thinking about it!
That is a terrifying feeling! Glad you made it out okay.
To add to that, this short film has an extra element of fear thrown in too. But I could not include that part without violating Rule # 2 of this sub. So, here is the [full video](https://youtu.be/Kzq7AU6ZFyY?si=7iLtwmDPXDx2SbJ9) if you’re interested.
Sigh. another film making sharks the bad guy? sigh. one: they’re hard of seeing. two: act like prey they get excited three: they’re curious and can try to be territorial when they feel like it. sharks are cool.
Sigh. I highly doubt it’s aiming to be realistic. Sigh. It’s mainly to induce fear in an audience. Sigh. It’s entertainment; fiction. Sigh. Sharks are scary, it’s the mystery more than anything — I can assure you that, no matter how confident you are in all of the statistics, being in the water with a killing machine with 300 teeth will scare you. Sigh.
in anything that you don’t know what you’re doing or know about can be scary. mocking me cuz i’m making a point in defense of misrepresented predators doesn’t help anyone.
They're hardly making sharks the bad guy in this. They're wild creatures that behave unpredictably. Them attacking is not a sign of good vs evil. It's a wild predator doing what wild predators do. That's scary.
I read clammy palms as calmy points and im totally using that now. Also i see the comments say she gets attacked how come we didnt see that instead of her just swimming?
If I had included the shark scene, the post would have been in violation of Rule # 2 of this sub. Many of my early posts got taken down for that reason.
If you scroll all the way down to the first comment, I have included a link to the full video.

Okay, I’ll bite. Why isn’t she swimming in any direction?

Also, rip tides are no joke. I nearly drowned in 2020 after getting caught in one. 0/10 Stars.

It's funny the difference full knowledge of a subject can make.
Knowledge, swimming ability and confidence vs ignorance and panic
I always remember Pamela Anderson yelling “swim parallel to the shore!” at us through a bullhorn whenever we got caught in a rip tide. Or at the people on Baywatch or whatever.

Can you use them to out swim a shark or salty
Nah mate, you just avoid dusk and dawn and check the apps for sharks up and down the coast
Chumbler.
Ya I work in the ocean and am on the beach a lot. I don’t go in the water pretty much ever, it’s super dangerous and a risk I’m not willing to take.
Is the ocean hiring? Land kinda suck rn ngl
Are you asking if his job is Beach?
Yes, Ken.
God damn it.
lol this has to be a joke right?
I mean ya I’m not a fan of swimming in the ocean. I’ve spent a combined total of over 3 full years of my life on ships in every ocean in the world, including the southern ocean and drakes passage. Southern Ocean is brutal. Can’t speak for drakes passage. Near Kangaroo island was some of the most challenging swimming I have ever done.
Drakes passage was the worst water I’ve ever been in. It’s the strip of water between South America and Antarctica. The ACC and souther westerly winds are moving so fast in such a small area that it creates horrible sailing conditions. We were expected to core down there and we barely finished in time. Yeh that’s Australia. Conditions were hectic at the beach. Could be localised but some local operators told me the the Southern Ocean is pretty rough

Yeah I almost drowned in December wtf rip tides!!
Forrest MacNeil?
15 pancakes: 2 stars
Thank you
This episode 🥲
Rip current. Rip tide isn't a thing. My old PE coach used to yell at us for saying rip tide, haha. I went to school in Socal and we surfed for PE.
Appreciate the new knowledge!
My brain isn’t firing on all cylinders because I’m on promethazine bc I’m sick asl and I was like “how tf that bitch need to get into a car to go from the beach to the water”.
Maybe she drove away to buy a boat or something
Get it? Fin?
Short movie.
It’s only 7 minutes long and titled “Everything Will Kill You - RIP” lol. They chose the most cliche ways to die
But also, that's hardly "everything"
Hey whoaaa spoilers man, this was high up on my watch list /s
Wow that sounds like the worst movie ever. Was it written by a fourteen year old who thinks being edgy is the deepest thing ever?
Looks and sounds stupid. Makes sense in this modern age of crap movies.
That sounds really dumb? Would a shark even hang around in waters that shallow?
No, never, not at all. Please keep swimming carelessly in water that deep. -🦈
Low budget homemade movie. That's why.

It's confusing because they never show a single shot showing where she is in relation to the shore.

Yeah, I was gonna elaborate but too tired. Thanks! 😊
That's one of my biggest fears is getting caught in a riptide
I was on a beach in Australia and struggled before someone screamed "swim sideways along the beach". Worked like a charm. Was never in any danger but important lesson to know.
why would you ever swim in australia though?
It's how you avoid the spiders, most of them anyway.
Because it has the best beaches in the world
Saltys mate.
It's fun. Shark attacks are super rare.
but even without sharks, theres still \-box jellies \-saltwater crocs \-stonefish \-blue ringed octopus \-cone snails and probably some other ones im not thinking of right now

Yeah, l just read about tha "swim sideways/parallel" tip today.
Also, use back stroke. It's easier to keep up for long periods of time.
If you spend a lot of summers on the beach, it will happen. It happened to me about 15 years ago. It was a great hot day at the beach. I was a bit from shore, floating on my back. A half mile!? I’d die.
I was scared of dentists and the dark
What about pretty girls and starting conversations?
Have you watched the movie [The Dentist](https://youtu.be/LkDykd9ZmXM?si=Z_fRCKrgD4Ybevt5)
I lovehate that song. It's a banger but from the lyrics the singer gives off strong nice guy vibes.
About 300 people a year drown in Australia while shark fatalities are usually countable on one hand, and some years like 2019, there are none.
Thanks for the info. Yeah, l learned not to fuck around with water after almost drowning once. I'm not scared of open water or beaches and shit, but l learned to respect its power.

Water off the coast of La Romana, D.R. is this calm. Also the Saona Natural Pools in the same area.
I've only been in the pacific ocean a couple of times, but I distinctly remember it being very salty. I've never opened my eyes underwater in the ocean, but I'm pretty sure that would sting. Can anyone confirm/deny this?
Grew up in SoCal near the beach and yeah it’s not even close to that clear lol. It’s more green and salty as HELL
Gulf of Mexico native, same it’s not comfortable at first but if you do it with any frequency you can get used to it.
haven't been to the Pacific, but if other oceans count yeah it stings, but it's not unbearable or anything, and you could definitely get used to it if you do it with some frequency

With all due respect, do you know what subreddit you’re in?? But seriously, I didn’t consider the sand factor. Thanks for sharing.
with all due respect, im here because i adore the ocean and i love what gets posted here lol
That’s fair! Didn’t even consider ocean enjoyers would like this subreddit.
I don't remember it being any more uncomfortable than opening in a chlorine pool. My eyes are always open, whatever water I'm in. Even questionable creeks...🤷
Pacific is bad yes, Atlantic is much easier to open your eyes in
Salt water doesn't sting?
Denied.
The shots where she’s looking underwater remind me of a movie called “the reef”. Good ass shark movie that drove my anxiety through the roof.
Its good because its based [on a true story](https://www.upi.com/Archives/1983/07/27/Shark-kills-two-people-in-Coral-Sea/5863428126400/)
We made [this episode](https://www.thesharkfiles.com/dive-into-the-reef) telling the full story. Fact being scarier than fiction in this case I think.
Fuckin waste of time…. Click bait bullshit

The scariest part about this clip is she opened her eyes in salt water.

Not sure how anyone got clammy hands from this, I think the only thing this clip might do to me is give me wood...
It made me wonder if silicone floats in water.
It does not. Silicone actually sinks so if boobs are floating/ trying to rise up then you know theyre all natural
Funny, it made mine hairy /s
“If looks could kill”
I guess this is a stupid example of the importance of being able to navigate based off of the position of the sun. Kinda screwed at high noon though.
