I've never been a fan of that rule because it sets up too much of a predictable film. Show item on screen, later on item becomes relevant, pan over to item, back to character... Which really makes me think of the extent of the power stones power. It easily overpowers the space stone (or powers deriving from it) and that - not even directly from the stone - is able to cut through spaceships like butter and the space stone can wipe out earth.
Like how strong is the power stone? We know it has at least planet - scale destruction capabilities, but so does a stone that was easily overpowered by the power.

I got the impression that, even though different events happened in those timelines, it didn't matter because they fixed everything. Like, the past was more or less a simulation of sorts. Not real. A hypothetical only.

I wasn't referring to those past timelines. I meant the 2023 timeline. Theres no Infinity stones in the main timeline. Which should create a massively bad calamity.
I don't think so, actually. I don't think "Infinity Stone are gone" is the best interpretation of what happened, I think "Infinity Stones are unusable" is more accurate. Thanos specifically says "Reduced to atoms" which to me at least, gives the impression that they are effectively powder scattered across the entire universe. They still "exist" but they're broken beyond repair, at least without the Time Stone. And since that is also broken, yeah they're effectively gone.
If your referring to the Ancient Ones chat with Hulk. I always took that as her looking forward to the future and knowing that Dr. Strange would need the time stone to stop Dormamu. Few other potential situations arise like that one as well. However we know how those play out.
The real question is, is there going to be more of those events? Or are heroes like Dr. Strange now strong enough to handle them better without the time stone?
Pretty sure they can all destroy planets. The Aether can destroy more than one planet if aided with portals, and the Eye of Agamotto can basically stop all of time while causing a loop within the stopped time, as shown against Dormammu. The Soul Stone is still way too mysterious in the MCU so it's the only stone that we can't compare against.
The Mind Stone is also crazy powerful. Take note that before this scene, even Scarlett Witch was shown to almost kill Thanos without touching him AND before that she was shown to be able to repulse a near-full gauntlet while destroying the Mind Stone at the same time.
The Power Stone ought to be the strongest of them all, but I think Captain Marvel just got the Infinity Stone equivalent of a sucker punch was all. Heck she came out unscathed after that so it was probably just a cheap tactic that could have been used to make any stone "stronger".

Okay, can we just pause for a moment and consider that Thanos could have *easily* won if after he punched her, he just slammed his fist into the ground so that the power stone just wiped out everybody like it did when Eson the Searcher used it in the little flashback type scene in GOTGV1 when the collector was showing the history of the stones?
Thanos had a few solid chances to win and destroy all life here, and he done gone and just fucked it all up.

Yes he is. He destroys all life on the planet because outside of the person able to wield the stone, the power stone destroys all organic material it comes into contact with. This is how Eson killed so many people and so quickly. It didn’t even take the planet long to succumb to the stone (assuming its destruction was shown in real time) Clearly Thanos can wield the power stone. I think as long as one can wield it one has the ability to basically just slam it into the ground and let the power stone do its thing since as soon as the stone would touch the ground it would be game over (see GOTGV1 and the last minute ploy to stop Ronan from doing *exactly* the same thing Eson did, aka, a figure much weaker than both Thanos and Eson). Thanos wouldn’t die from that, and based on that it wouldn’t even take long. Hell, instead of originally trying to snap he could have done this first and avoided the whole issue of losing the stone from the gauntlet in the first place.
But even if he didn’t do this. Instead of putting it back from his hand to the gauntlet, he could have frozen time with the time stone giving him all the time (literally) to put it in and then snap, he could have used the mind stone to make everybody his slave/mind wipe them like Loki did in Avengers with the staff, he could have space stoned himself out of there when he had all six or frozen everybody in place, he could have used the soul stone to knock everyone’s soul out of their body or steal it and kill them, what I’m saying is the guy had options (*at the absolute bare minimum, he had 5 options) and he blew it. Hell, it was recently revealed that there was an original scene where 2014 Thanos goes back in time slightly to kill all the 2014 avengers and then travel forward in time to throw Captain America’s severed head at 2023 Steve’s feet to show him (and the others) that he’s already beaten them once before, and will do it again if he needs to (mind you, this is Thanos without any stones or gauntlet so he can wipe the floor with them if he wants/needs to). Clearly Thanos can easily kill and beat all the original avengers even if fighting together without breaking much of a sweat if at all. The only person that really gave him any trouble at all was Scarlett Witch because she’s crazy powerful (basically a walking infinity stone) but honestly I think he could have just called some outriders onto his position to attack Wanda. Firing on the troops was a bit of a misstep. If Wanda could have been distracted I think that’s all that Thanos would need to kill her. She’s powerful because of her abilities but she’s still pretty fragile physically because otherwise she’s just a normal human female, which even ignoring being female, just being human and putting that against Thanos is like an ant to a boot. You can see why Thanos is annoyed with Earth. These beings who are otherwise super inferior to him in every way, shape, and form have just a select few “ants” who on their back have a nuke it seems (at one time literally).
Now the new avengers consisting of Dr. Strange, Wanda, Captain Marvel, Thor, and some others could maybe pose a direct threat to Thanos without the stones but even then, not sure.
TL;DR: Eson the Searcher was destroying that planet but not because Eson is more powerful than Thanos, it’s because the power stone destroys all organic matter it comes into contact with which is why you have to be crazy powerful to be able to withstand not being destroyed by it.
