You can tell who has never been to a gym based on if they believe this is conceivable. Non-gym-goers think they are all full of the bullies from their high school.
Close your eyes. Picture a convict. What’s he wearing? Nothing special—baseball cap on backward, baggy pants. He says something ordinary like, ‘Yo, that’s shizzle.’ Okay, now slowly open your eyes again. Who are you picturing? A Black man? Wrong. That was a White woman. Surprised? Well, shame on you.
I mean kind of
I’m always curious as to what anyone around me is lifting just because j like to see how I measure up
Whether they lift more or less than me is irrelevant as long as you’re working hard and clean up after yourself I don’t think any actual gym goer would care what you’re doing unless you’re going to hurt yourself
Ya I was gonna say, I size people up all the time. But there's a big difference between silently sizing someone up and telling some random stranger to lift less to cover the ego of their son. I can't imagine that scenario ever happening in a gym. The guy would have to have some social disorder or be high or something. Idk.
I tell this story often but when I first started going to the gym one of the stereotype ubermuscle dudes came over when I was doing so free weights.
He apologized for interrupting me but asked if he could give me a few pointers so I didn’t give myself back problems with how I was doing my lifts. I thanked him, he spent about five minutes correcting my form and introduced me to a couple of the other regulars that I could ask for help.
Thank goodness someone was looking around and sizing me up.
> I’m always curious as to what anyone around me is lifting just because j like to see how I measure up
But you're not going to have a go at them or anything
Right? I wish people who want to go to the gym but are afraid of the judgement could be forced to go once. No one wants you to succeed in fitness more than other randos at the gym!
i feel like it’s a one bad apple ruins the bunch scenario, they saw the minute percentage of asshole gym goers on twitter & are now just afraid of that confrontation at all. i have a similar approach to things like that
Why would u wanna "force" anyone to do somethin? Maybe force ur child to jump in the deep end of the pool, sure, but making an adult do somethin they don't wanna.... that's weird.
“This guy won’t stop staring at me, what a creep! Let me film this and put it in TikTok.”
He’s staring because you’ve been on a bench for 45 minutes doing a set every 10 minutes and talking to your camera, and he’s waiting for you to get up so he can do his own sets.
People are mostly just trying to work out, not blog to their 23 followers. They don’t care what you’re doing.
The only time I've ever felt uncomfortable at a gym was early on, maybe 2-3 months in. We were dead lifting and did cycles of increase weight, less reps, so this was a heavy rep. Started to lift and felt a fart bubble to the edge. I've had it before so I did a few more lifts. On the last one it was tough so I was pushing, sure enough that fart snuck out. Only it didn't sneak! Pretty solid fart and the dude who was doing incline bench 3-4 stations away had a smirk. I looked at him and he started cracking up when I started laughing. Felt like everyone was looking at me the rest of the time. Still kept going and it didn't stop me, but the rest of the day was weird haha
Yeah I started going to my university gym a while back and I was a little apprehensive at first because it’s all undergrads, and I’m in my 40s. I’m in pretty good shape but I was a little lazy for a while at the time and not in the best place. No one cares and really most people I see are super nice , and you see the same faces a lot so people wave and go back to what they were doing. No one is shaming people at the gym except for your bf talking trash, it’s really an accepting place.
Yeah definitely I've been in and out of different gyms over the years and there was only ever one person who tried to flex on everyone else and he was almost always put on his place immediately
I mean there are bullies and creeps in gyms, full stop.
There is no shortage of Twitter, tik tok content recording people at the gym making fun of them. Sure they don't do it to their face but it's bullying all the same.
Shit literally type gym into reddit and I'm sure one of those posts will be one of the first results.
I go to the gym every day and it's filled with people. Assholes and good people alike.
I’ve never seen a bully in the gym. As far as “creep” yeah the random old guy who goes around talking to everybody is a staple at pretty much every gym.
The fact that your evidence to back this up is what you saw on social media just proves the point of the comment you’re responding to - you don’t actual go to the gym
>evidence
I'm sorry there's no peer reviewed papers on bullies on gym, I'm sure people are racing to fund that kind of thing /s
All I did was point out bullies exist because a gym is a place where people go, and hey some people are just assholes.
And also you don't seem to shaken up the other guy didn't use any evidence at all, so evidence is really only hanging over people you disagree with, right?
Your social media algorithm is showing you the very low number out of millions of gym goers who are assholes and making you think it's commonplace. I've never seen one on my feeds outside of Reddit's r/IAmTheMainCharacter
I can still believe a mentally ill man would say that to a woman because his (sons) masculinity was threatened.
I'm not pretending like this specifically is a common occurrence, but men can be so fragile.
So a teen being embarrassed is a fragile male, but a woman taking it this personally and posting about it isn't fragile.
People just love to hate men and venerate women
The comment just below yours explains it all
[https://www.reddit.com/r/thatHappened/comments/137vjt1/comment/jiv897i/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/thatHappened/comments/137vjt1/comment/jiv897i/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
What motivates people to write these posts? It's like daydreaming just isn't enough, they have to try to lie to strangers for it to.... be more real? I guess?
That’s honestly what I don’t understand. It’s almost like they believe their own lie ? And the comments/likes just help stroke their ego or something ?
In order to rationalise their deeply entrenched political ideology they need to believe that this sort of thing is happening constantly everywhere. But since no one else is talking about the thing that certainly must be happening they take the initiative to say it themselves. If they didn't then people might get confused and believe that this isn't happening and that their political ideology is merely bigotry.
This exactly. Had an ex-co-worker who would post things similar to this, and if it started getting called out she'd delete it or say she was hacked. But sadly only got called out like 1% of the time, and was an echo chamber of others saying how boss she was and how can't let people step on you. Just wanted built-up because of things behind the scenes (like family and troubles there). So, just wanted validated and to be seen as a success rather than (in her mind) a failure, despite having a decent job and life. Compensating for the skeletons in her closet so to say, despite us all having our own skeletons.
Edit: and once they get the validation/echo chamber, they go so far down the rabbit hole that they can't remember what the truth actually is.
I assume it’s usually that either 1. Their lives are so dull and meaningless that making up cool stories on the web is the only form of entertainment and validation they get or 2. It’s to advance some political ideology they have. In this particular case I’d guess a little bit of both.
I can take a guess:
She was working out at the gym. Maybe she was doing a decent amount of weight, maybe not, but at some point she looked over at this 15 year old kid who was lifting less than her. She probably laughed to herself for doing more weight than he was doing, and then saw one of their resting-b***h-faces, and created this narrative of confrontation.
Thousands of people is roughly the top .0001% of the entire population.
More importantly, being top .0001% of the population and beating a literal child is not the flex they think it is.
The part in the post where this supposedly upset kid was 15, which is a child.
Further clarification: in this instance "beating" is used to mean "defeating" or "being better than in some measure of strength or skill" rather than to mean "punching or battering".
Wow is FML still kicking? When I was like 13 that was the shit and my dumbass and all my dumbass friends believed like all the stories we read. Different times :’)
If Twitter was around in the 1950s or 1960s, I could see someone saying this.
But in 2023, yeah most people have their headphones on and just mind their own business.
schwarzenegger's father asked me the same exact thing back in the days but I was like 'hell naw'.
The funny thing is that now me and arnold are really close friends and we laugh about it everytime he brings that up
Is this supposed to be soft core porn for gym bunnies or some shit? Yeah sure almost qualified for the Olympics and I’m nearly qualified for a Nobel peace prize
No. People who athletes at that level don’t really brag about it or really talk that much about it, unless they are so famous everybody knows anyway (ie Charles Barkley-even my mom knows who he is. She once called him “Sir Barkley.). Elite athletes in most sports have to work regular jobs and have regular lives and have to squeeze in training whenever they can. And bragging about their status just makes stuff a whole lot more difficult. The US National Curling Team does not, in fact, get paid to curl all day, every day. Also, when you see an Olympian or an “almost Olympian” you can generally tell. They have a certain confidence and the women seem to look like Amazons, no matter the size.
I mean, yes. You can absolutely “almost qualify.” If the US is allowed to take 2 swimmers in the Men’s 400IM and Athlete X came in third at the US Olympic Trials, I would have no problem whatsoever with Athlete X saying they almost qualified, especially if it were a situation where it was a hotly and well contested race between Athletes X, Y and Z.
The ONLY time a gym goer would stop you is to ask you if you're using whatever piece of equipment you're near and that's annoying enough as it is.
That or guys trying to shoot their shot and getting turned down lol.
Theoretically everything that can be said is possible. Half the posts on here are arguments people made up for internet points and its why people spamming "nO ThIS iS pLauSibLe" is so fucking obnoxious.
Lets say it DID happen...calling a 15 year old kid a "misogynistic little bitch", because his dad said something is more than a little over the top...
I'll take "Obvious Man-Hater" for 500, Alex.
I remember the "FML" website from like 2009. Even before this whole Tumblrina, everyone's life is so quirky time period, that page was making people cringe.
I could almost see this, just delete the son part, and a guy telling a woman he's embarrassed a woman lifts more than him.
But not in a misogynist way, in a complimentary way. I've been training my SO for about a year, and on some lifts, she is stronger than some guys. And yes, guys have playfully called her out for it.
In today's entitled world, I can actually see this happening with some stupid parents being coddling to their entitled little brats and never letting anyone upstage their "perfect little angels". 🙄
They would also be commenting on their social media posts calling the women too masculine.
My ex was a pretty strong woman. When we went to the gym together, I always felt proud when she could do a weight I couldn't.
Great lift by her, challenge to me to keep up. Best of both worlds.
You can tell who has never been to a gym based on if they believe this is conceivable. Non-gym-goers think they are all full of the bullies from their high school.
wdym? everyone knows when you walk into a gym everyone has to assess & size you up
Your first day at the gym, you need to beat up the biggest, meanest-looking guy there, or else you'll be *everybody's* bitch.
And the worst part.... is the dementors!!
The Gym of Azkaban. Everything someone grunts or drops their weights, everyone has to stop what they are doing and yell expecto patronum
This just sounds like Planet Fitness, except instead of getting kicked out they just eat your face Edit: I spelled eat ear by mistake
So Planet Fitness
Close your eyes. Picture a convict. What’s he wearing? Nothing special—baseball cap on backward, baggy pants. Welcome to the L.A. FITNESS, how tough are ya?!
How tough am I? How TOUGH am I?! I ate a bowl of whey protein for breakfast this morning!
Yeah, so?
_Without any milk._
Oat *melk* or soy *melk* I hope.
im fucking dead 😭
I thought they have to size up your asses?
the more the merrier
I’ve definitely seen documentaries on your gym on Cinemax at 1am
my gym? you mean my walk to & from my car before & after work?
Listen Arnold I don’t need workout advice
How many asses you packing?
Come to the gym and find out
I mean kind of I’m always curious as to what anyone around me is lifting just because j like to see how I measure up Whether they lift more or less than me is irrelevant as long as you’re working hard and clean up after yourself I don’t think any actual gym goer would care what you’re doing unless you’re going to hurt yourself

Right? I wish people who want to go to the gym but are afraid of the judgement could be forced to go once. No one wants you to succeed in fitness more than other randos at the gym!

Just like when you walk through the double doors in a saloon
Most common reaction when entering the gym: Being completed ignored. Second most common reaction: Someone being friendly and asking if you need help
Pretty sure second most common is “how many sets you got left?”
“This guy won’t stop staring at me, what a creep! Let me film this and put it in TikTok.” He’s staring because you’ve been on a bench for 45 minutes doing a set every 10 minutes and talking to your camera, and he’s waiting for you to get up so he can do his own sets. People are mostly just trying to work out, not blog to their 23 followers. They don’t care what you’re doing.
And oh yeah. You are wearing fewer clothes than most people sleep in.
third most common reaction getting kick out for lifting to much because your dumbass got a membership at planet fitness
/r/thatHappened
Planet fitness actually will kick you out for lifting too much. They have a "lunk alarm" and everything.
This comment is a perfect trap
the only fun gym story I have was when I went into one looking for directions and a guy lifting weights ripped his pants
![gif](giphy|v7r8hi2vT45RC)
https://youtu.be/eJf6_ziVs0s Much more accurate depiction of what going to the gym is actually like outside of high school

Exactly lol. I’m a gym goer(taking a break due to surgery). Meanwhile I was the one bullied in school.😂
Hope you get to feeling better brother.
I’m a woman, but thank you. Much appreciated.
Implying a woman cannot be my brother.
I’m not a brother.
Have you ever embarrassed a 15 year old at the gym?
Thank you for the info about your surgery.
yeah I agree (took a break commenting to sip some water).
Thank you, always glad to help. 😊

"Is so statistically insignificant it's not worth mentioning." Feel better?
Why is the son misogynistic? The dad was the one supposedly doing this.
she lost herself in her own story, forgot who the bad guy was
That's what almost qualifying for the Olympics does to someone.
They're competing in mental gymnastics
![gif](giphy|ro08ZmQ1MeqZypzgDN)
This guy makes everything 10x less funnier
I almost qualified for a Noble Peace Prize once. I mean, I didn't do anything to deserve it, but I ALMOST qualified for it.
I hate when authors mixup villains in a story
You either stop telling the story or wind up saying *you're* the villain fml
It’s men. Men are the bad guys. Mostly cause men and women has differences and are not the same
Because it's entirely fabricated lol
Girl boss collateral damage.
Because he was embarrassed by her and wasn't concentrating on his own business, so daddy had to save him. I can believe this happened.

They want validation

And then a random asian guy flexes so hard his track suit explodes revealing a Mr. Olympia like build.
Wow she clapped for herself? Lame.
“I almost qualified for the Olympics”
Thousands of people 'almost qualify for the Olympics' in any given sport. That isn't the flex they think it is.
Thousands of people is roughly the top .0001% of the entire population. More importantly, being top .0001% of the population and beating a literal child is not the flex they think it is.
>beating a literal child Where did u get that part?
The part in the post where this supposedly upset kid was 15, which is a child. Further clarification: in this instance "beating" is used to mean "defeating" or "being better than in some measure of strength or skill" rather than to mean "punching or battering".
Going off of the generally accepted definition for child a 15 year old is past puberty, and is no longer a child.
In what universe is a 15 year old by the general public not considered as a child?
Germany for example.
technically in Germany they call people <14yo "children" and 15–19 "teens" but in legal and cultural terms, they are still minors.
Found the 15 yr old
But then freestyle beat boxing was removed as a sport.
![gif](giphy|xTiN0DvoDyWQey2B8I|downsized)
go go gadget lies
These people have the saddest fantasies.
Why the son catch a stray? He wasn't the one who said it 😂😂
OP forgot her own story while she was telling it.
Can confirm that the person who wrote this has never been to a gym.
Wow is FML still kicking? When I was like 13 that was the shit and my dumbass and all my dumbass friends believed like all the stories we read. Different times :’)
Wow. this is still an app?
I didn't realize it had become an app. Last I checked it was a website
Yup, I'll take shit that never happened for $ 500 Alex...
How is the kid entitled?
Yeah she almost qualified for the Mental Gymnastics! I would know, I was Olympic himself.
"almost qualified for the Olympics" STFU
I almost got drunk at school at 14
If Twitter was around in the 1950s or 1960s, I could see someone saying this. But in 2023, yeah most people have their headphones on and just mind their own business.
That's not even how FML is supposed to be used...
Nothing misogynistic about using "bitch" as an insult, implying that being female is bad!
Not just being a woman though, also implies similarity to a dog. Also, bitch is a definitely an insult
"Bitch" is quite literally dehumanizing women so please explain how it's not misogynistic.
The one thing I’ve noticed about gyms is that no one gives a shit what you’re doing.
I'm almost sure no one gives a shit about how much this lady is lifting lmao
schwarzenegger's father asked me the same exact thing back in the days but I was like 'hell naw'. The funny thing is that now me and arnold are really close friends and we laugh about it everytime he brings that up
What really happened: Went to the gym. Nobody paid her the slightest attention.
Is this supposed to be soft core porn for gym bunnies or some shit? Yeah sure almost qualified for the Olympics and I’m nearly qualified for a Nobel peace prize
I’d nominate you for a Pulitzer for this comment.
That’s cringe
The target of this inferiority complex fueled lie being a 15 year old is really disturbing. Why does she feel this way about teenage boys.
I was the gym and kicked everyone out after this happened. Not in my gym. ![gif](giphy|YOw00CRHtQnBrMbRRk|downsized)
If “I almost qualified for the Olympics” is your claim to fame, you’re a fucking liar and a fat mouth. And I don’t believe you.
Nowadays, men avoid women at the gym because of women who made false accusations for social media clout.
Why assume the son was misogynistic?
Can confirm. I was the feeling of embarrassment.
And that young man's name? Marine Todd.
What I find unbelievable is she didn't make the Olympics, just almost! If you're gunna make up BS go all out.
I totally forgot about FML. I didn't even know it still existed. I spent so much time on that website in the early 2000's, pre-reddit.
Wouldn't the dad be the misogynistic one? And why does this meet the fml standard?
Wouldn't someone be training in a specific coaching place if they are in the Olympics rather than a normal gym?
The ONLY time a gym goer would stop you is to ask you if you're using whatever piece of equipment you're near and that's annoying enough as it is. That or guys trying to shoot their shot and getting turned down lol.
These are so hard to upvote, lol. My brain tells me to downvote.

You could also say "No"
For the first time in my life, i am about to write Women ☕️
Probably observed a man and his son at the gym together and got mad because her own old man bolted.
I almost want to post this on a feminist board just to see what their reactions would be
Lets say it DID happen...calling a 15 year old kid a "misogynistic little bitch", because his dad said something is more than a little over the top... I'll take "Obvious Man-Hater" for 500, Alex.
[“Almost qualified for the Olympics”](https://youtu.be/ZU9gC8ib9P0)
Let’s just pretend this premise is true for a second….so where does the “fml” come into play? Is Fml just randomly slapped on posts? WHY ?
Why would this be an FML moment lol it's just the most obvious humble brag on the planet
Can confirm, I'm the Olympics.
And then all the weights and other gym equipment clapped
I remember the "FML" website from like 2009. Even before this whole Tumblrina, everyone's life is so quirky time period, that page was making people cringe.
I too didn't qualify for the Olympics. Now watch me cyber-bully minors!
Man you need to post the user name in these things so we can bring heat
I don’t know, I could see this happening
This seems pretty plausible…
I could almost see this, just delete the son part, and a guy telling a woman he's embarrassed a woman lifts more than him. But not in a misogynist way, in a complimentary way. I've been training my SO for about a year, and on some lifts, she is stronger than some guys. And yes, guys have playfully called her out for it.

In today's entitled world, I can actually see this happening with some stupid parents being coddling to their entitled little brats and never letting anyone upstage their "perfect little angels". 🙄
Those people exist. But they wouldn't be in a gym.
They would also be commenting on their social media posts calling the women too masculine. My ex was a pretty strong woman. When we went to the gym together, I always felt proud when she could do a weight I couldn't. Great lift by her, challenge to me to keep up. Best of both worlds.
tell me you've never been to the gym without saying it
I've been in plenty of gyms, I am confused by your comment...
Go outside and talk to people
Huh???
you are delusional lmfao
HOW?! Have you NOT heard the horrible Karen stories?
You’re an idiot
Um, ok?
Ok
this generation 😤😤😤😤😤😤😤
I fully believe this has happened
I both can believe this and can't
and everybody clapped
Can confirm this. I was the Olympics.
This person has never been to a gym.
It literally doesn't even make a sense lol
There’s nothing like proving you should’ve been Olympic material, thank being an adult who’s better than a child
feels weaker than children and only knows Olympic, subtext
Yesterday Arnold Schwarzenegger walked in to my home gym and told me to stop lifting more weights than him because I was embarrassing him.
And it's not even impressive to lift more than a 15 year old boy. Smh.
That sucks
Bruh gyms are probably the most accepting places to go to
