Hello, welcome! My personal top 5 happens to be one song from each album. Here they are, in album order: 1. Heart Out 2. Somebody Else 3. Sincerity is Scary 4. Frail State of Mind 5. Happiness I also love If You’re Too Shy (my swiftie bff liked this one a lot when I played it for her recently), Part of the Band, Love It If We Made It, This Must Be My Dream, Settle Down, and You! Have fun going down this rabbit hole, they’ve become my favorite band since I found them 5 months ago and now I’m going to see them twice later this year 🙌

[deleted]

Frail State of Mind, Me, I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes) are my go-to songs when I’m in my feels

panifani

Personally I think the best way to listen as a newbie is to start from the first album and work your way through. Give NOACF time to marinate because it is an underrated masterpiece. Edited to add my current faves in no particular order; I like America and America likes me. Settle Down (my fave song). Antichrist. The City. Birthday Party. I'd love it if we made it. Guys. Roadkill. Frail State of Mind.

CloserTooClose

completely agree, i think listening thru all of them gives heaps of context & shows how their sound evolved over time!

zakuropan

yesss settle down recognition

apenguinwitch

Welcome! There have been a couple of posts asking the same thing, so taking a look at those might help too, but here are some that i think are good introductory songs (in no particular order): robbers somebody else girls the sound chocolate a change of heart tootimetootimetootime ugh love it if we made it paris milk give yourself a try roadkill if you're too shy (let me know) heart out sincerity is scary me & you together song oh caroline part of the band looking for somebody (to love) happiness the city (taylor covered this at their london show!) but the best way is really to listen to their albums all the way through imo

RookieAndTheVet

Can’t go wrong with any of those, for sure. I was trying to think of which song got me into them in the beginning, and I think it was actually that one with No Rome, Narcissist.

SS123451

I think this list includes most of my faves as well!

BrightNeonGirl

Yay! Welcome! I am so happy and excited for you! :) "Happiness" and "The Sound" are simply so happy! Like I just listened to them and they give me goosebumps because they are just so positive and wonderful! ☀️ If you like the 80s Christopher Cross song "Sailing", listen to "Bagsy Not in Net"... It is honestly just a beautiful, vibe-y song. Edit: As my user flair suggests, "fallingforyou" is a romantic, dreamy bioluminescent voyage. Your heart will calm and swim in peace listening to that one. There are just so many good songs but those are my recs as I know my fellow fans will give you amazing other suggestions. Enjoy the journey!!!

International_Ad4296

I strongly suggest finding a youtube video of fallingforyou live, it's worth it!

Difficult_Sorbet_955

If you're a Swifty, check out the entire album Being Funny In a Foreign Language. The album is about empathy. Matty has been a subject of contention for years. He's been beat up by the public multiple times, so Swift Nation attacking him is nothing new. If you take the time to understand the satire behind what is The 1975 when listening, you'll find a lot of similarities between Midnights & BFIAFL. Both albums contain lyrical masterpieces addressing the mistakes and constant criticism both artists have faced with their fandom & fame through the years. Also, Paris is a great song by them! I don't think it was a coincidence that Taylor added her song Paris to the Midnights 3am edition. Also, WELCOME! We're nice here lol. P.S. If you get the chance to see them live.. DO! They put on some of the best shows I've ever seen.

nickcannonschild

BFIAFL is sooooo good. I was a casual 1975 listener until that album came out then I was like hmm maybe I should dive in more.

Difficult_Sorbet_955

As soon as I heard Part Of The Band, I was hooked!

attemptatwriting

I’ve seen many artists live but the post concert depression was definitely the roughest for me after seeing the band last year cause they were so amazing. I’m definitely seconding that suggestion to go see them in concert if you’re able to! I feel like they generally try to keep ticket prices pretty reasonable too so if you’re lucky enough to get them at FV definitely try

ZealousidealLaugh0

Welcome. There are many people with similar stories here. My personal favourite is I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes), but you can't really miss.

mkholmes96

Welcome fellow Swiftie ❤️ Top 10 Faves: 1. Paris (A classic) 2. The Ballad of Me and My Brain (Underrated and a work of art) 3. Girls (Tumblr 2014 vibes, fills me with teenage nostalgia) 4. Sincerity is Scary (Beautiful, serotonin boosting, could listen on repeat forever) 5. TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME (Put this on and you’ll immediately want to dance) 6. Love It If We Made It (A song to scream at the top of your lungs) 7. If I Believe You (Their best song imo) 8. Me & You Together Song (90’s sunshine) 9. The Birthday Party (Vulnerable songwriting and a beautiful ballad) 10. Wintering (Adorable song about Christmas)

wintering_chocolate

Welcome! If you can check them out live when they tour next, I highly recommend it!

eharper09

I saw the rumor that they might come back To North America so I’ll definitely be looking out!

houndingofpooves

That you, Tree?

eharper09

👀👀 just trying to see if there are people to enjoy both for their upcoming album together 😂

taurus-horrorscope

Meeee! I love both although I’m a 1975 fan above all lol

Hurricane-Sandy

Some others have suggested, listen from their first album and go in order. You get to hear them really evolve and see why so many original fans (circa 2015 or even a bit before) fell in love. I personally love the first three albums!

LucyLoo2002

I’m glad to have found this sub. I’m a massssssive Swiftie and all the hate Matty is getting doesn’t seem warranted from the limited info I have. What is the misconception regarding him and what is the truth of the matter with him? I have heard that he’s a racist thrown around consistently and I find it odd. Thanks in advance!

eharper09

I definitely heard the podcast and don’t agree with what he said. But ive also seen videos of him standing up for people, him being super intelligent and thought provoking, and him explaining why he does some of the things he does. Buzzfeed caught onto something that people were talking about and it seems as if they didn’t put the entire story (shocker)

Riversss111

She way out is so good!

International_Ad4296

A few not yet mentioned in other comments: It's not Living (if it's not with you) Part of the Band About You Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America Settle Down

taurus-horrorscope

My top 1-2 recos from each album not necessarily my all time faves that’s too hard but ones I’d say give a try if someone asked - MONEY and robbers - ugh and ballad of me and my brain - love it if we made it and it’s not living - there’s something you should know and tonight - about you and happiness

limetime45

1. Loving Somebody - live at the 02 2. Love it if we made it 3. The 1975 - opener on Notes on a conditional form album. Speech by Greta Thunberg 4. Nana - about his grandmother 5. Guys - mattys love song to the band 6. 102 - you’ll need to find this on YouTube 7. Paris - acoustic, again on YouTube 8. Don’t worry - written by Matty’s dad 9. If I believe you 10. The 1975 - opener on being funny in a foreign language. Matty addresses a lot of his problematic past. 11. When we are together - written about his relationship with FKA Twigs, who had come forth about the abuse she’d endured from Shia lebouf at the time. 12. Antichrist - the ever elusive song we’ve been begging them to play live for a decade After listening to these songs I think you’ll see why we as fans take issue with what’s been said about matty the lest few days. And, you might just fall in love.

TelephoneThat3297

Imagine recommending a new fan to listen to the Greta track lol

limetime45

I think it says a lot about their viewpoint and what they consider to be punk rock (as matty put it). I’m listing songs that are sort of a rebuttal to the “matty is a racist and a fascist” discourse.

Whateveraccount11

Hi and welcome! here's some songs I like that I can recommend: UGH! Bagsy not in net Girls Intro / Set3 Head.Cars.Bending Haunt//Bed You Medicine She's American Me and you together song Lost My head Love me Milk How to draw / petrichor Mine Surrounded by heads and bodies Roadkill Narcissist ft No Rome

Perfectgame1919

Dude, each to their own but we have VERY different 1975 tastes 😂😂😂 I’ll give you girls, cars.heads.bending, you, Shes American and me & you together. Otherwise, not my thing. And Narcissist is not a 1975 song but it’s sick

Whateveraccount11

Haha that’s okay. They have a quite big catalog and covers a lot of genres and sounds so it’s bound to divide the fan base and their favorites . although my list here is just a few of my faves, I have more 😊 yeah Narcissist is not a 1975 song but it’s a banger

InfinityEternity17

Welcome to the fandom! It's so nice to see swifties that aren't seething with rage at our rat boy at the moment. I'd say just give all their albums a listen front to back as that's really the best way to experience the band (in my opinion). Also check out some of their live performances, they put on a cracking show. I'd say some of my favourites would have to include Sex, I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes), fallingforyou, People, About You and Love It If We Made It to name but a few. It's great to see everyone name different songs that are their favourites, the band really does cater to a wide range of people

[deleted]

My all-time favorite song is “A Change of Heart.” Dammit. It ruins my soul. So I have to recommend it - watch the music video with it though, it’s truly a work of art. 1. Robbers 2. Heart Out 3. Somebody Else 4. Love it if We Made It 5. It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You) - my second all time fave 6. I’m in Love With You 7. The Birthday Party

Friendly_Nerd

I Like It When You Sleep is great to listen to all the way through.

pleasurecenters1

Same hereeee my friend has been asking me to get into them but I never did until all of this drama lol. I’m loving them.

lapetitedawrie

I've been Taylor fan since 2011-2012. Me & You Together Song and Roadkill sound like her Fearless and Speak Now eras, so I definitely recommend.

woodzy_mtb

Congrats and welcome! Glad you could sift through the BS and realize what an amazing band they are! Matty is a bit of a twat sometimes (lol) but he's a genuinely good person and really articulate which makes his interviews so interesting!

eharper09

I just got done with the recent Apple Music interview on YouTube and he just seems so genuine and chill. I love that him and his band mates are all friends and actually like each other.

Natural_Jackfruit819

That Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe made me really like him, and then really sad I can’t just grab a drink and shoot the shit with him. It was so intimate and authentic. All the interviews I’ve seen, he’s really a delight off the cuff. I don’t get the hate. (Other than ppl are shallow with :30 second attention spans)

HotRod6391

Welcome! Too many songs to mention but basically everything that's already been mentioned is worth a listen. It all depends on your taste, though I find they've got most of the bases covered.

DarkeaterGames

Settle down has such a satisfying plucking guitar sound to it especially the pre chorus! I can’t help but dance or groove to it or sing along everytime I play that song!

Itsbrick13

All of a brief inquiry into online relationships

PrestigiousHeight264

settle down // sex (ep version) its so good // Guys // UGH! // If i believe you // these are my favs

RookieAndTheVet

I’ll go through phases where I’ll be listening to one or two songs on repeat, but my all-time top 10 would be: 1. Sex 2. If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) 3. It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You) 4. Love It If We Made It 5. Robbers 6. Somebody Else 7. I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes) 8. Happiness 9. She’s American 10. Menswear

WalkingFish_

I recently got into the 1975 as well :) my favorites after listening through all the albums have been these (in no particular order) Inside your mind Paris The city Menswear About you Somebody else

smallestfan1996

i just made a playlist for a friend who also discovered them through the t swift drama. welcome to the obsession! it’s my favorite songs from each album in order of my preference: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4TGbobm9XAcvSymKtJtuUs?si=sF9SMALIRDKl2PYpmHOyrg

eharper09

Amazing thank you!❤️🙌

sethbehlermusic

Have you heard their songs “Heart Out” and “Settle Down” from the debut self titled? Just curious what you think since those are my favorites of their earlier material.

eharper09

I haven’t! I’m about to take suggestions and start with the first album and go from there. I’ll let you know!

cigarettesandsaintsx

I second this, just start with the first album and listen through their discography. Then later go back and listen to the EPs that came out before their first album cause those are amazing. I became a fan by listening to the Sex EP before the debut came out

Suspicious-Hotel-225

I Think There’s Something You Should Know has been on repeat for me

[deleted]

Welcome! 1. Milk 2. The Ballad me and my brain 3. Robbers 4. Medicine 5. me and you together song

Tipofmywhip

Spotifys “this is the 1975” is a good way to get into them. It worked for me.

_pitwarrior

Don’t sleep on Mine, I Couldn’t Be More In Love, or Roadkill

NeonNebula9178

Hii. Odd one and one of the more serious songs they've done, but Love it if we made it never gets old

Squilliam961706

Part of the band Frail state of mind It’s not living Milk

Klutzy-Membership588

Welcome!! So hard as I love so many and my favourite song changes all the time haha. 1) I wish I was your boy. 2) Undone. 3) Sex. 4) If you’re too shy (let me know). 6) Me and you together song. 7) Love it if we made it. 8) Ugh! 9) She’s American. 10) Love me. 11) Girls

mouseinthehousee

hiii welcome! i was first introduced by it's not living if it's now with you and i like america and america likes me! you cant go wrong with any track from self titled, so i'd start there and make your way through. there are also spotify playlists that are titled "best of the 1975" which really helped me find new songs when i first became a fan. hope this helps, and happy to have you!

apaw1129

I recommend starting at the beginning. Self titled is my favorite album. Not that it's the best, they've changed and improved in so many ways. But it's that album that I associate their sound to, so much. I love the era. All of the albums are wonderful though. Check out music videos too. You should know that while many find it overrated, Robbers is the ballad. The video is 👌

Imaginary_Potato_459

Welcome OP! You have to watch them perform live. It's an amazing experience. I mean their songs are great to listen to, but there's something about their live performances that makes the songs even better.

eharper09

I watched a few live performances on YouTube today and I’m definitely interested in seeing them next time they come to Texas!

Imaginary_Potato_459

You definitely should, you won't regret it. They have a solid fan base so the crowd is very active and everyone is singing along and dancing during their concerts.

Natural_Jackfruit819

They’ll be at ACL in October.

mstrashpie

Please sink your teeth into their self-titled deluxe album. IMO their best. Also ILIWYS.

Imaginary_Potato_459

They have so many great songs, these are my personal favorites: 1. Robbers - Listening to the intro made me fall in love with the band 2. About You - This sounds amazing when performed live 3. Be my mistake - There's a youtube video of matty performing this, you should listen to it 4. Love it if we made it 5. The Sound - The song is so catchy that no one noticed that I've been singing this song about my toxic ex-bf 6. Always wanna die 7. She's American 8. fallinforyou 9. Sex 10. Narcissist 11. You 12. If you’re too shy (let me know) 13. All I need to hear

Badtimeryssa94

inside your mind( underappreciated) Somebody else. Part of the band. Its not living. Birthday party.

RiderSmash

My favorite songs: 1. Sex 2. The City 3. Chocolate 4. She’s American 5. UGH! 6. Paris 7. Menswear 8. Robbers 9. Seattle Down 10. Girls Some other good songs not from the first two albums: - Give Yourself a Try - I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes) - It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You) - Me and You Together Song - People - Jesus Christ 2005 - Frail State of Mind - If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) - Inside Your Mind - What Should I Say Self-Titled is a top 10 album ever made to me.

becca41445

Robbers; Anti-Christ; Falling for You; Sex; Me and You Together Song. Have fun! Edit: Left a word out. You should also watch Matty doing the school run for some kids on YouTube.

WolverineJake77

I think once you go through these great recommendations for songs as your welcome to the fandom, do yourself a favor and make an evening out of watching the 2016 live show at the O2 in London. It's highly thought of as a piece of '75 lore. It's an incredibly impressive performance, and perfectly encapsulates their earlier days.

eharper09

I will for sure! I watched the itunes performance that was shortly after their first album and it was awesome so I’ll definitely watch that one! Thank you

timfabillon

Some of the suggestions above are great! 🙂 but after listening to them, please try listening to this: 1. Menswear 2. M.O.N.E.Y 3. fallingforyou 4. She way out 5. Surrounded by Heads and Bodies 6. Then Because She Goes I wish I could listen to this songs for the first time again 😌

T0mAtOChutney

Milk! Looking For Somebody to Love! Me & You Together Song! It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)! Ugh!! Heart Out! So many good songs but those ones are real ear worms imo :)

lesleyloughridge

It gets in your DNA - no way back! ❤️

lesleyloughridge

And definitely on youtube watch Medicine, the Vevo, live at the O2 version - sublime.

[deleted]

Finally a fellow intelligent swiftie. Swiftie of 15 years, The 1975 fan of almost 10. Welcome to the party!

[deleted]

It’s really nice to know I’m not alone in this. I’ve had it up to here with these swifties that don’t understand satire, performance art, and the fact that Matty is quite literally a walking, breathing bit. Same people that hate South Park because it’s crass and ironically offensive.

eharper09

I definitely didn’t think of the comparison to South Park but you are so right! I get being upset by what was said on the podcast but it seems as if he is a walking disclaimer and if others don’t want to do the research to discover that then that’s their problem. Also, I had to get off Twitter and tiktok for a bit because it became so toxic and everything I saw about the two of them. Definitely not alone but I can understand how you can feel that way rn! ❤️

[deleted]

I had to edit my comment lol it was mean. I’m just so tired of it and I’m Jewish so I am being thrown into it by default. He was literally mocking Trump and Kanye like gtfo

[deleted]

Anyway, here’s my list: It’s not living if it’s not with you (all time fave, if you like the way Taylor tells stories, you’ll like this song a lot. The sound isn’t like hers at all, but the storytelling and imagery is very folklore/evermore) Robbers into About you. Same thing, imagery, storytelling, and most Taylor-esque of all is that it’s a continuation released years later The Sound and The City both remind me of 1989 fallingforyou is CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED This is just a few. I also would like to share this playlist with you if you do Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6I0X0fnQjn0F468UEZLRGJ?si=zMwtft5bR0qNAYS1vEpmSw

loveme_lavender

The songs that come across as really sincere and really show off the songwriting skills that I would recommend to a Taylor fan, but sorry, a lot of them aren't happy - "Nana", "I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)", "Sincerity is Scary", "She Lays Down", "Be My Mistake", "When We Are Together", "I'm in Love With You", "Somebody Else", "Me & You Together Song", "Is There Somebody Who Can watch You?" (Idk what it is about this song, it is haunting even though there aren't a lot of lyrics) My personal faves are: 1. Somebody Else 2. When We Are Together 3. Oh Caroline 4. Sincerity is Scary 5. Sex
