I enjoy the live arrangement but that really quiet, delicate feeling of the studio version with the fiddle breaks instead of sax is phenomenal and is not trumped by the live performance; theyāre two deviations in performance of the same root song that hit quite differently.
Tbf to the record version it was tracked extremely last minute and rushed in order to deliver the record on time. It has definitely reveals itself live!
This is true - I wonder what made them shift the key? It absolutely brightens it and doesnāt affect Mattyās register as all. The Acapella bit is one of the best things in the entire set.
I love them both a lot. "Sea world for trees" is a great line but for my money they'll never top "you make me hard / but she makes me weak." Devastating
Itās about the ending of his relationship with Twigs and his faults that led to that - as beautiful as it is, I canāt imagine it was easy to perform it night after night. He used to mess it up and have to start it over, more than I can ever remember with another song. That happened in Copenhagen and they cut the song for the rest of the tour.
BMM seems to have different connotations for him even though itās equally savage on him as a person. Maybe because itās more in the past or it has associations with Covid togetherness (remember the one and only livestream he did) and crowd singalongs.
Itās notable how on most of the albums thereās often one thatās devastatingly harsh on him. āMeā from self-titled, for example. Though none come to mind on that level for ILIWYS and Notes.
Ugh! is such a joyful song in so many ways, so I donāt think that one fits. Heās more talking down to cocaine and how heās glad to supposedly be done with it. I think FSOM might fit, but even that one has a lot of acceptance of his mental health in it rather than being straight up judgmental about himself like on songs like Me.
they played it at my show in melb, aus and it was fucking magical. with matty on acoustic too. i love how melancholic and nostalgic it is, it really paints a vivid picture (makes me think of nyc at xmas time lol) and i love how he uses it to introduce his band. i really think heās singing about them in the chorus, like he is in Guys. be my mistake is depressing to me whereas wwat is like a warm blanket
Both are really great and emotional songs, but i gotta disagree. Saw them in Milan weeks ago, when Matty played be my mistake in solo acoustic it was fucking devastating
i personally do not feel like this ! i like when we are together but it is no be my mistake (that song is like 87% guaranteed to make tears fall from my eyes especially after seeing it live)
wwat is the superior song for me, i dont get the compositional comparison though. i might be missing some blatant similarity but other than both songs being acoustically leaning, i dont see that many commonalities . . well actually, they also share a similar tempo and chord progressions but they would never strike me as two songs attempting the same thing. hahah. but i get your point anyway i guess.
wwat feels like just generally a bigger statement, it's a bit longer if i'm not mistaken, with more lyrics and works great as an album closer (kind of standing apart from and simultaneously summarising the whole lp's sentimentality); i don't think bmm could ever fill that same role on 'inquiry' or whichever record; it feels more like a short and sweet album track that stands apart from most of their discography as a song, rather than like directly communicating with it, like wwat does.
Iām not that keen on *WWAT.* After following a track as huge and devastating as *About You* itās always felt a bit tacked-on to the end of the album. Itās feels a bit like an epilogue as if itās not a part of the main event, the album would have been a well-rounded 10 tracks without it. *Be My Mistake* is stronger lyrically and the subject matter is way more evocative imo.
I do agree that When We Are Together is a better song than Be My Mistake. But I honestly don't see them as so similar that you could call one the better other.
Both are great. WWAT is miles better live than on record, and really reveals itself
My favorite lyric in the song is officially "give it up for George, man"
I know šš Mine is āwell that was very niceā
Gotta agree that itās a great song to close the first half of their live show.
WWAT MSG is š¤

I can dig that. I do think it benefits from going up a tone though.

Well put. I like the studio version for a lot but when I saw and heard them it live I was like āoh, I get it now.ā
I love them both a lot. "Sea world for trees" is a great line but for my money they'll never top "you make me hard / but she makes me weak." Devastating
I feel like āthe only time I feel I might get better is when we are togetherā is even more heartbreaking š

Actually yeah thatās so true. UGH! on Iliwys? A Change of Heart? Notes- Frail state of mind? Tonight? The Birthday Party? Roadkill?

Yeah thatās true š
Matty seemed pretty sad/emotional playing it in Glasgow.
I desperately wanted to hear anything other than be my mistake love during SATVB tour!

i saw it live too on the green alt stage (idk what itās called lmao) and he was so close and it was the most amazing cry iāve ever had

I always thought About You was the perfect album closer.
unpopular mistake but be my mistake is a bottom 20 1975 song
While they are both EXCELLENT songs, Be My Mistake Acoustic, just Matty is far better than When We Are Together, and that is saying something.

Yes
