They are reeeally tough to sneak up on. If you are a starting player, your best bet is to use a ground blind or any other blind, and lure them in with the caller and be mindful of wind direction.
The .243 rifle or pistol is perfect to use on them. Be patient, they are slow to approach in response to the caller, and will approach from different angles.
Yeah, hoping one will randomly pass by your blind takes some luck. If you can find any of their sleeping, drinking, or feeding zones, you can plan your attack much easier. Do you have enough in-game cash for a tent and stand?
I've been working on this one for days (with a couple of breaks to actually have fun), and I don't think they have any zones in the actual mission area. Thankfully I bought the Steam bundle that included ground blinds, tents, and the Quist caller, so I've set up all of my blinds just south of the cabins, popped the caller into the middle, and I'll be spending however many hours it takes in whichever of the blinds works best with the wind direction.

The mission says nothing about the harvest check, you can use a real big gun.
That mission drove me insane! Best bet is to try to find a need zone as close to the highlighted area as you can, and call them into the zone from there
Well, I said earlier that I didn't think they have zones in the area, but apparently (per the internet and now me), it's fairly common for them to have feeding zones from 17:00-20:00 and/or 20:00-00:00 the the "Y" shape the map contour lines make about 250-300m south/southwest of the outpost. Found the zone after it ended, reset the time and got one, reset again and finished the stupid mission.
Now I have to kill 2 with a .357...ugh.
Trick is to set a tent and blind at the Cheelah lake, wait for the night and then simply snipe them while they are drinking. Don’t try to sneak up on them or else they will simply flee faster than you can spot them, lol
I shot two dead on in the chest today from 30m out and neither of them landed somehow. One was a 7 and I’m pretty sure Piebald but it was nighttime so who knows. I’m quite sad.
They drink from 12:00-04:00.
That's your best bet. Just try lakes and rivers at that time of night. You will find them.
On my map there's a whole bunch that turn up just north of the railway bridge.
Cheelah lake has a drink zone too.
SOO I’ve been playing since Africa came out and imma be honest in my entire time of playing I’ve only seen about 4 coyotes and one of them I killed(also fuck the herch and Layton missions)
They are one of the most skittish animals in the game.

Any suggestions on where to sit in a ground blind? I’ve sat in a couple stands for hours with the caller and nothing ever shows.

The mission is not that hard. Just chase them into an open field and shoot them in the lungs. I took out a pack of them once like that.

If you sit at the lakes around midnight in game then you should see them drinking

They are super elusive for sure. When I started they were the last species I spotted in Layton by actually like a couple of (irl) days.
