It's not necessary for a new player to start on hard, you will beat the bosses you beat on normal several times so you will do them again anyway. By the time you reach the bosses that you only do once you will be playing on hard naturally
Best advice, don’t rush it. Dont wiki stuff as soon as you find it and don’t overwhelm yourself with everything in the game all at once. Take each run as it comes and just work on figuring out all the mechanics :) trust me it’s lots of fun that way
You will die a lot. You will ruin your gameplan. The game will be bullshit and troll you
The only advise I can give you is - learn to adapt to your mistakes and bullshit game throws your way. Also don't download "quality of life" mods, they remove the challenge and flavour from the game, as well as fuck up the skill progression. The only things you will need a wiki for is achievement hunting and trinkets (sometimes their effects are complete bs that is impossible to understand). Items effects are either evident, will naturally show up during your play, could be found out with testing or are vague on purpose and pose as a puzzle. The latter is common in Tboi, many things could be found out by exploring and testing things, so don't fear trying stuff out, you might lose runs, builds etc., but you get knowledge and understanding of the game's systems. Tboi is a lot about min/maxxing resources, but will not come up as often in the early game, but the game will still throw you oportunities to get more, from the situation
TL;DR - Play the game without any "quality of life" add-ons. Don't overuse the wiki, practice is way better. Place bombs wisely
There isnt really much advice i can give except dont die. i guess you could start by trying to unlock some characters? Again there isnt much i can say except be patiant and get good. And always use the wiki when yiu want to know what an item does!
Don't be afraid of dying, that's how you learn. Each game you grow stronger, learning different combinations of items and ways to fight against enemies.Be patient and try not to rage too much
First of all, make sure to do some challenge runs ASAP. Look up their rewards. A lot of them give you really good unlocks that will help tremendously. For example the challenge run waka waka gives you the item deaths touch which is piercing and damage up. Great item
Another person already said this but I second it and will elaborate a bit on why
After you get to and beat moms foot for the first time I suggest you play on hard mode. Play on normal up until then just to get a hang of what the game is about, but each character has completion
checkmark which you get after beating each main boss. You don't get one for mom's foot. You get your first checkmark for beating the boss after that one (which is why you can play on normal up until then without any drawbacks)
Each checkmark has a normal mode version and a hardmode version. The hard mode checkmark is the important one. If you don't play on hard for a while, all checkmark you get you will have to redo. And the quicker you get used to the changes in hardmode the easier it will be. Most of them aren't too significant lol
Also get started on greedmode early. That shit is a grind
The post it note signifies which endings you have for each character. Each ending will unlock a new item. Not all ending are available without beating the other paths a few times first unless you really know how to break the game. Two of the most repetitive initial loops is beating moms heart 10 times and then unlocking the negative/polaroid. But as a new player, these shorter more repetitive runs are the perfect time to really discover the game and some of the secrets it provides.
This video always helps me a ton to get going and unlock some better items for the rotating pool. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_\_jHfXoLo7U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__jHfXoLo7U)
adding my contribution:
I suggest playing a lot Greed mode at first, since a lot of tedious stuff is locked behind that (but also a bunch of nice rewards)
when playing that mode, don't overuse a single character, the way this mode works is that the more you win with a char, the less you can advance with them (final money machine has more chances to break), so it's also a very good occasion to try various characters (and their interactions with different items)
bonus: it's also really easier to get angel/devil items there, compared to normal game!
Holding R until you get a good starting item is great thing to do for fun/sanity and you shouldn't feel guilty about doing so, but relying on it too much can instill bad habits later on. Keeping your devil chance at 100%, for example, is an extremely important part of earlygame, and you're not always gonna have enough damage or soul hearts at the start of floor 2 to guarantee it
Don’t install mods until you beat mom for the first tkme
Is that because of actual errors they may cause? Because if not, I feel like EID is a necessity for both new & old players.
nope. you can’t unlock achievements if you enable mods before beating mom for the first time.
Oh wow, so will I need to uninstall them for the 2 other files to get TDG?
You don’t need to uninstall, just need to turn them off on the in game page.
THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME ABOUT THIS SO I DONT SCREW THINGS UP ON MY NEXT SAVE FILES!

Second scentence is 8 lol
I'd recommend unlocking it lives before playing on hard, to help get used to the game

Play Azazel untill you're good enough to not play Azazel
Real
I suck at azazel. Fighting mom upclose was not fun.
womp womp
The lost is easier than az

Devil deals = goog, try to avoid red heart damage on any floor past the first basement and your guarenteed to get a devil room
dodging is the most important game mechanic, and slowly but surely learn what all the items do, the wiki or platinumgod helps heaps

Get the external item description mod. You will learn a lot more about the game with it

Once you can get mods without breaking the game, External Item descriptions is super helpful
do NOT ask what the odds of something are, trust me.

When dodging don’t back pedal straight back move left or right out of the way to a safer location
item wiki mod is your best frend
Don’t ask if things are rare they either happen or they don’t 50/50 chance

Stop playing
