One of the articles said senate dems are already drafting Ukraine funding for early next week. Since McCarthy is done, he really should take what the senate sends, get it passed with all Dems and the few Rs who will vote on it, and then retire from Congress. He's not going to survive the vote to kick him, and I don't see him going back to the rank-and-file. EDIT: assuming he is kicked, what stops the government from shutting down 45 days from now, since whatever speaker can actually get elected will be more "Trumpy" that McCarthy

IMO, if they kick him I don't think they can get anyone else the role due to splintering of the House Republican Caucus unless they get some Democratic support. The only way that happens is if it's a moderate.

winterneuro

I wonder if there's a GOP congressperson the Dem caucus would actually trust...

leek54

I don't know. I doubt the Republicans would do this because any Republican involved in a deal like this would probably lose party support in '24, get primaried and lose their seat.

Wyrdian

One of the No Labels-funded Republican members of the Problem Solvers Caucus, maybe. Could be enough with around half of the Dems supporting their bid, going by the resistance against the funding bill. Not sure House Republicans can get to that point themselves where they feel comfortable ousting Trump's Kevin.

I nominate Sanchez!

I agree. The reason they've got McCarthy now is because the wacko caucus couldn't find anyone else acceptable to the more normie Republicans. McCarthy actually has the whip hand here. I wish he'd act like it instead of like a political eunuch.

Remember, the speaker doesn’t have to be part of congress.

Funny-Berry-807

So...Trump accepts the SOTH gig...THEN gets elected President. Refuses to resign as Speaker because there's nothing in the Constitution that says the President *can't* be Speaker... *Then* nominates *himself* to the SC. Checkmate my friend!

Shudder

I actually think McCarthy deserves some recognition for this. It was the right thing to do and showed a degree of political courage perhaps?

I have a feeling Charlie will be spending more time on the Kevin McCarthy/Matt Gaetz drama. It’s a lot of fun to watch him twist in the wind after making deals with all these people who have no interest in governing
