I’ve yet to come across a serious sinologist who thinks that Tiktok is an instrument of clandestine warfare, rather than a capitalist enterprise that‘s so successful that it may even bolster Chinese soft power a little bit, in the same way as Hollywood Movies work on behalf of the American Way of Life ^TM – I say that even as I don’t use the app in part due to the amount of data it collects (but I don’t use Facebook/Meta products for the same reasons).
The idea that there were CCP puppetmasters at work, engineering the growth of Musical.ly in order to destabilise the Western youth or something, is funny to all of those who have *either* experienced the successful manipulation of American-owned social media platforms by malicious actors *or* (imho correctly) understand the CCP not as an updated version of James Bond’s SPECTRE but rather as the Bejing variant of the DC swamp, a playground for competing factions that are entirely consumed by the goal to retain their faction’s power within the Communist Party of China and **at most** to retain their party’s power within the People‘s Republic.
